Found some good things in this Brooklyn Heights bakery. It has lots of Middle Eastern breads and spices to choose from. Damascus Bread & Pastry Shop is one of the many small bakeries in the area. Good place to get some authentic items. The counter display has things like baklava and bulk salads. Came looking for a few items to serve at a get together and got some interesting ones people liked. It's mostly a bakery, so of course there's lots of cakes and pastries. There's the Middle Eastern favorite of baklava, lots of varieties. Also there's things like stuffed grape leaves. Many things good for a party. Also they have this Vegan Turmeric Cake. It's about $5 to get a pretty big size. It was a little dry, the only complaint. This made it very crumbly, but it was good going with coffee or preserves. This store is filled with middle eastern baked goods, both sweet and savory. The staff is very friendly and will andwer your questions. In addition to their own baked goods, they offer breads from other middle eastern bakeries (although I find teirs to be wonderful). In their refrigerator section, they have hummus, Babaghanoush, middle eastern salads and cheeses. As you move towards the back of the store, there are prepared middle eastern dishes for takeout. This is the place for baked goods. Their mamoul (filled- Lebanese?) sweet is the best. There's a choice of dates, walnuts, or pistachios inside a powdered sugar dusted cookie. They have baklava and other honey treats, go explore. The friendly guys behind the counter are happy to explain the details to the uninitiated. The intoxicating aroma that entices you as you open the door is from the freshly baked savory pastries. They have a variety of fillings, including feta spinach, or meat pies. There are beverages as well, if you can squeeze your way through to the back. Joray fruit rolls are at the counter, and they're not hard like next door, they are fresh. Lovely local business with unique pastry offerings as well as lunch options! This is a grab-and-go spot with no seating. My friend and I wandered here looking for a snack to tide our hunger and got the barazek (sesame cookie) and the pistachio knaffa roll. The barazek was great, but the knaffa roll was outstanding. I was afraid that it would be way too sweet due to the spun sugar, but it was balanced out well with the filling inside. In general they have a large selection of popular and unknown pastry items as well as hummus and other dips in the fridges. The prices are very affordable at about $2-3 per pastry. I ordered a Falafel Sandwhich and Chicken Sandwhich and when I saw the gentlemen take out the garlic sauce I knew these sandwiches were going to be delicious. I asked for extra garlic sauce so, I waited to get get home to enjoy them. Tasted great and held up well even with the bus trip home. I also got 2 of each of the dessert turnovers...the walnut and honey one was amazingly good. The walnuts were toasted and crunchy and the honey pulled it all together. I came here to buy some Syrian desserts for my friend. There are not many Middle Eastern businesses left on Atlantic Ave so it was nice to go to one. I ordered a bunch of popular desserts: walnut baklava, pistachio baklava, almond baklava, bird's nest, and lady finger. I also ordered a spinach and feta pie for myself. You can get it warmed up which was nice. The desserts were very pretty and were not too sweet. The spinach and feta pie was very tasty especially if you get it warmed up. Just two doors away from Sahadi's is this little Pastry Shop that's been in business since 1930 which I'm surprised that I have failed to notice until today. Delicious and just the friendliest service! Damascus has a ton of options for different pies, ranging from meat pies to chicken to spinach and also a range of white or wheat dough. They also have a number of different desserts and a variety of baklava like pistachio and walnut. The side of the bakery has a ton of different refrigerated foods like dips and sauces, although I didn't look too hard. Expect to wait outside to come in as they are (rightly) limiting guests and it's clearly very popular here. The service is so friendly - I think the owner is who attended me and he was very sweet. I ordered the meat pie and it was tasty and spiced well, and the dough was a great texture. Also had a very tasty pistachio baklava. Will definitely return! read more

I absolutely love this place! We're lucky to have this Middle Eastern bakery & shop in our neighborhood. Their selection of pies, pitas, dips, desserts, and hot menu items are fantastic. We're partial to the meat pies (less so on the spinach pies, which are a bit too acidic for our tastes), pistachio baklava, and pitas (soooo fresh and soft!). Also, the service is outstanding! The owners are super friendly. I visited Damascus last month to stock up for a small dinner party with my parents out on Long Island and ordered a bunch of items, including 5 baklava squares. Run, don't walk to Damascus Bread & Pastry Shop! We spotted this shop while walking up Atlantic and must have passed it many a time before stopping by. We made a beeline to check it out! I was hoping it would be similar to a pastry shop I would go to before school in Jordan...and it was! They have a HUGE selection of savory and sweet pastries as well as prepared food, pita, dips, etc. They have an outstanding baklava and sweets selection in particular. I was really excited to see lots of kunafa, a favorite! We got a sampling of kunafa, baklava, and bread to try and it was all delicious and very reasonably priced too. The baklava here are AMAZING! I grabbed a to-go box with several different varieties, and they were all delicious. They kept well that entire day and into the next (after that, we'd eaten them all!). I also got a pistachio knafeh, which was good and very delicately flavored, although I thought the baklava was better overall. I also got a maamoul (date cookie), which was a bit dry for my taste. Finally came around to getting some food from this local business. There's a ton of stuff in this shop that I would want to try. Lots of spreads, dips, and premade foods. I would definitely get the spicy hummus again. The falafel and chicken sandwich were okay, but I think I would ask for less white sauce and more spicy sauce. The pastries were good to me but not amazing. I'll keep trying different ones as there are many options. I'm surprised it took me so long to review this wonderful place. My father has personally been coming here since he was young and it's both a good and a bad thing that I'm right nearby here. My preference in terms of deserts is their ma'moul (date, walnut or pistachio shortbread) and their ghraybeh (shortbread cookie with almond) what can either be ordered in a large size or in a box of small ones. The kunafa, Osh el bulbul (bird's nest,) lady's fingers, and baklava are also excellent with the only pastry that I have disliked here being the date brioche as I find the bread to be a bit too thick so it gets a bit dry. If you want a small snack, I'd recommend the lahmacun if you want something spicy and very tasty while the one with cheese and vegetables is also delicious. I personally haven't had their falafel sandwich for some reason but I assume it's cheap and and delicious like everything else. The guys working here are also some of the nicest people. They give good recommendations and they are happy to help whether it is someone new to Middle Eastern desserts. No complaints about this place or their prices. Go here instead of Sahadi's. read more

The storefront is situated along a string of Middle Eastern restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores along Atlantic Ave that harken back to a neighborhood that was predominately occupied by Lebanese and Syrian immigrants in the 1930s. The bakery is narrow, but long. The glass display cases housing vegetable and meat pies, baklava, knafeh, and freshly baked pitas. I always make sure to grab a couple of cheese sambusas and whole wheat spinach pies when I pass by. A family favorite is the bird's nest: crispy phyllo dough saturated with a heaping pile of pistachios and honey. read more

People in the know go here. Well there might be another Middle Eastern Place close by, this is by far the superior option. I usually buy a 12 pack of Lahmacun, these little lamb pizzas. Their hummus, their falfael mix, baba ganoush, In fact, all their salads are fantastic. Not to mention an array of freshly made desserts. The staff is friendly and helpful and downright funny. It blew my mind to see all of these people lined up at Trader Joe's during the pandemic for hours, while this place across the street remained chill. People waiting to buy a bunch of snacks made in a factory, while ignoring all of the freshly made and baked products across the street. Would def recommend the baklava which was really delicious, but personally am not a fan of their spinach pie bc there was very little stuffing and a little too sour (but that might just be a me thing). They have lots of items (both fresh and refrigerated for heating up later) so be prepared to be overwhelmed when deciding what to get. This place has been here for decades & is an institution. I've had much much better at other Lebanese, Palestinian or Syrian bakeries in Brooklyn & NJ (try Baladna Bakery in Paterson -- so delicious & fresh, and much more affordable). I used to live in the Middle East where you could get fresh baked bread every day. So was very happy to see I could recreate that experience right here in Brooklyn. The store has a very mom and pop feel to it. The owner was very helpful and makes a lot of suggestions on what you may like and how to store the items. I bought some lovely hummus and dip. Along with some fresh baked pita bread. The store also sells some amazing vegetarian pies. The thing I did not like was the cumber salad. I've been on the hunt for baklava in NYC and Damascus is the best I've had thus far. It wins in quality, taste, and price. Each baklava piece was pretty big--almost the size of your palm! And get this, it was only $2. Not only was it cheap for its size, it was also amazingly fresh. You can just feel the crispness of the filo dough with each bite. Great spot for Middle eastern delights and specialty foods! The cheese Knafe was delicious! I recommend either to get it first thing in the morning or heat it in the oven before you eat it - really makes a difference. Walnut baklava is great! Just like I've eaten in Jerusalem. The maamuls are so good! Both the walnut and the date. I prefer the date! Crazy big variety of imported middle eastern cheeses and also a lot of house made deli salads - baba ganush and tabule are delicious. Spinach cheese pie is great too. Honestly a great place! Came for lunch to try their falafel and shawarma sandwiches. Five dollars each and pita loaded to the brim with pickled cabbage, pickles, tahini, lettuce, tomato and meat or falafel balls. We sat and ate them at the bench on the bus stop because we just couldn't wait to try them. So delicious! We also of course bought their hummus, which is the creamiest I've ever tried, their lemony babaganoush, their homemade pita bread and some delicious green olives.
