Good neighborhood bar if you are looking for something to stop in for a drink and watch sports. The TVs are small, but the atmosphere is worth it. The bar is separate from the restaurant so you don't need to worry about the dinner noise crowd. Pretty Good! My best friend and I were looking for a cool bar after the movies on a Monday Afternoon. Most restaurants and bars are usually closed on Monday, but we were lucky enough to find one open on Mondays! LOL We found very curious the name of the drinks, dead poets LOL. The bar is small, not much illumination, we saw all the Guiness Records, and the bar has been awarded. I guess the bar had very good times in the late 90 early 2000. Emo/Poet/NYC/Alcohol vibe with a cool concept, but they are actually very friendly, and the service was great. I ordered a Titos Vodka dirty Martini, and my friend ordered from Prologue Menu, Man in the Iron Mask, awesome drink! - Champagne, vodka, peach schnapps, pineapple juice, OJ. Over ice. A cool pub with a literature theme, and more importantly awesome cocktails. It looks like a bar that's for smart people. The Dead Poet makes for some good reading. Patrons can even check out the inventory of old books. You have to get something to drink of course too. It doesn't have a snooty feel after getting to know some of the customers. More of a loud crowd than expected. They're not a bunch of bookworms as you may have thought. If it were this would be an even better bar. They still have lots of books you can look at in the back as you sit on the couches. As it is, this is still a good bar. The cocktails are about $12 to $13 or so. Expensive but these are excellently crafted. They're all named after poets or writers. All of these are more simple than they appear. I like the Walt Whitman the best. This is made with coconut rum, gin, orange liquor, and lemon vodka. Bookworms are welcome but you don't have to be one to go here. It has actual books to look at if you feel like it. I gave this place a four only because I do feel it's very LGBT friendly if your looking for a bar that isn't guy exclusive and just want a beer with some friends. But if the temperature outside is low, you may as well sit on the patio because it is this cold inside the bar, like sitting outside... They have nothing but a tiny heater for the whole bar? Really cool name, but not that cool in these other areas: 1. There are more female dead poets than Emily Dickenson, but their wall features only male poets except for her. 2. It appeared there was no table service so we had to order at the bar. The interior was also quaint and charming but I must have been oblivious to the literary quotes scattered around as other Yelp reviewers noted. The bartender was friendly when I arrived to place an order offering a sample of the cider on tap. Sold. It was a refreshing pint for only $5.50. We didn't order food but entrees being brought to the tables looked and smelled delicious. I'm unsure if I'm being generous with the 4 star review based on only one drink, but I liked the vibe and atmosphere. When we got there my gf and I were the only ones there so we befriended the worker, Tim. He was fantastic and attentive, plus we dove into Games of Thrones and Star Wars discussions which is always incredible. The decor and song selection of this place earns it a 5 star, but the mixed drinks were on point. I highly recommend the Game of Thrones drink! We intended to have only one drink, but we ended up staying here for a good three hours. We stayed because the service was pretty prompt (even while sitting outside) and the specialty cocktails were pretty strong - a perfect recipe for a successful happy hour. The pub has a wide variety of cocktails named after great (and not so great) authors. My go-to beverage was the J.D. Salinger, which was a combination of Redemption Rye, bitters, club soda, and whiskey (I think) soaked cherries. While I do not hang on the UWS too frequently, I definitely could see myself traveling to The Dead Poet. I could not have asked for a better experience on the UWS. read more

Came to The Dead Poet after a show at the Beacon Theater. The hike was well worth it as we were greeted with an incredible ambience, friendly and professional staff. Great range of mixed cocktails (The Dead Poet and JD Salinger were two we got that were outstanding) as well as what could be the best pour of Guinness that i've had in years. I came here for the first time this past weekend. It was very busy and this was around 5pm on a Sunday. I got the famous 'Dead Poet' drink. If you've read my reviews before from bars or restaurants, I don't like a strong tasting alcoholic drink. This one has 7 liquors in it and I think they only allow you to order 1 or 2 (don't quote me on that). Everyone says it tastes like grape soda and I was skeptical. But wow... it tastes JUST like grape soda. You did not taste ANY alcohol. It was delicious and dangerous. My husband got the 'Ernest Hemmingway' drink which did have a strong alcohol taste which he enjoyed. The service was quick, helpful and super friendly. I would definitely be back! read more

Stopped in around 10pm on a Friday visit to New York. The place is narrow and was quite crowded, but we got a table on the patio. The beer selection was solid. We didn't try any of the cocktails. It's a younger crowd - most likely Columbia students making their way down. I love the literary theme and there was a solid academic bent to the vibe - the gentleman at the table next to us was pouring over a book.
