However, if you are self-pay or have specific coverage limits, stay away. I was extremely clear with this office multiple times about my coverage. I told them exactly which X-rays my insurance would pay for and explicitly instructed them not to perform any that weren't covered. They ignored me, performed the unauthorized X-rays anyway, and then sent me a bill for the difference. When I called to contest the charges, their response was: "We don't let insurance dictate our care." That is a convenient excuse to ignore a patient's informed consent regarding their own finances. The office also lacks any personal touch. The staff is so large and the turnover must be so high that you rarely see the same person twice. It's always someone new who has barely read your notes and has no idea what you've previously requested.

The location is convenient and in between work and home so I drove by at least twice a day and decided to look into them. It's located in a business strip and has it's own parking lot. When I walk in, Monica has always greeted me warmly. She is one of the office assistants and she was so incredibly helpful and friendly. I was trying to get my records switched over and Monica offered to take care of it. There were issues where my former dentist office LOST my records but Monica helped me sort out what to do and called my insurance company to make sure I was covered and good to go. I so appreciated everything she did because she could have left it to me but actually wanted to help. Lori was my dental hygienist and I swear she is the best! It was my first cleaning ever that did not hurt at all! She's very gentle and provides caring advice on how to keep up with my dental hygiene with no judgment (yes, I really should floss more!). Dr. McDonald is also great. He gave me options of what I could do for some of my dental concerns and answered all my questions. You could tell he really cares and takes pride in his work. Never pressured me into choosing any services either. My husband who has really sensitive teeth and gums said that it was pretty much pain free for him too and a lot better than other places he's been. He also agreed that Dr. McDonald was really informative about his options and no pressure to get work done. I could seriously go on and on but I won't. Just want to say I highly recommend anyone looking for a dentist in the DSM area to consider McDonald Family Dentistry for their staff and the care they give their patients. He's always had a dry abrasive personality but that was highly inconsiderate to blame staff for the privilege you created. They were always full when booking so i asked if it was a problem to reschedule, I won't know my work schedule until closer to the date. They assured me it wasn't a problem. I called them randomly and they acted like they didn't know me. Maam, me my husband and our 5 children all go there. You KNOW who I am. Then she goes over my rescheduling appointments and I said yes is that a problem? I've always given over a week's notice. She said well we will schedule you ONE more time but you NEED to show up. I needed the work done so I went. As soon as I walked in before announcing my name she said "well THANK YOU for showing up!" So you do know who I am. Thought so. Needless to say we've switched and WOW what a difference. So much happier at our new office Mercer Family Dentist. Night and day difference, especially with the actual dentists.

That is AMAZING, and I'm sure most parents would agree! It takes a special dental team to put a little kid entirely at ease in the face of all those instruments and machine. Not only are they great with my kids, they're also great with me! Dr. Rastetter is not at all a "drill and fill happy" dentist. He will wait out and watch any trouble spots to see if they get worse in between visits, and will not drill "just in case." I am a firm believer in maintaining as much original tooth as possible, so I like his approach to treatment. We won't go anywhere else now!

But there is room for a lot of improvement. Their ability to answer phone calls and or to reach out to their patients for billing is exceptionally low. Recently I was served with papers at my residence for an over-due bill from 4 years ago. I have been going to this dentist for over 10 years. They have all my contact information including my phone number, email, home address and my mothers phone number and email, yet out of the 4 years that this bill was due, neither one of us were reached out to or notified of this issue. Due to them choosing to reach out to an attorney instead of me I had to pay my over-due bill and a $100 attorney fee. I've always been on top of bills and whatever fees I have due so this situation could've gone so much better for myself and them. But I had to learn that unfortunately East Des Moines Dental does NOT care for their patients they are treating for and are only caring for what money they can get out of people. Just a warning for first time patients and or patients who have been loyal for many years, they WILL NOT have you back on financial terms.
