Chris and his team came for a free design consult and to inventory what I already had, looked at photos of past Christmases, and asked all the right questions to see what is was we wanted for our new look. I wanted something new, but was hoping to use mostly what we already had. He took my ideas and put together a beautiful plan and set a timeline for completion. To my surprise, Chris was able to get started within a week, and even completed the job while we were out of town. We felt completely comfortable having his team in our home unsupervised. They were efficient and cleaned up afterwards. We came home from our trip to a Christmas wonderland that went beyond all our expectations! We couldn't believe the majority of the pieces were things we already had; and was able to reimagine things I had considered "unusable". He even created a theme piece for my ill husband, which brought tears to his eyes, because the piece was so expertly created. I would describe Chris's style as "Elegance with an Edge". He is able to see the potential where it seems there is none and turns it into a thing of beauty. He stayed within budget, and I had no qualms about his team being in my house. I am definitely using his services again next year, and will have him come back to design some interior spaces in our home.

I took a chance and went with Haus Interiors on a recommendation from a friend, and I'm SO glad I did! Chris came by (for free even) to see what I had and what I wanted done, and gave me the option of a whole job price or by the hour. Both worked out to be about the same. Since he mostly used what I already had, I went with the hourly rate. He was able to mostly take the decorations I had and turn them into something I would've never guessed they could be! The whole process was really fast, and the actual work was done in a day. I work from home, and after he arrived (on time, to my surprise!), I left him to do his work. I came out of my office later that afternoon and was astonished at what he was able to do! He had turned my existing "meh - nice try" decor into what I would describe as "classical elegance". Totally worth it, and would definitely use him again. It's taken a lot of holiday stress off of me where I can concentrate on other things.

I gave very firm and specific design guidelines which were ignored, and many design hours were wasted going down avenues that were wholely unsuitable. They certainly value their time and I take no issue with that, but at this price point you have to use your time efficiently. To illustrate this further: I wrote up several long and thoroughly detailed emails going over my requirements.... only for much of what I wrote to have largely been ignored by the designer (i.e. I gave firm guidance on couch selection, and the couches they presented to me after spending design hours on the project didn't meet what I had written). My last straw had to do with room dividers. This was one of the largest design conundrums. I had done my own research beforehand and was unable to find a solution that didn't require nailing into the ceiling or floor; it had to be a tension based solution. They presented me with a divider that was pretty much the FIRST GOOGLE RESULT on the topic... and required you to screw it in still (I had confirmed this with the vendor beforhand, they were the first option I looked at... only took one email to find that out). So of course, I get charged design hours on a half-baked, unvetted solution that would have failed (and this was AFTER I had already expressed this very specific concern to them). I'm sure they have a good eye for design, but if you're going to hire them, either throw your opinions and design constraints out the door, or be prepared to shell out an absolutely absurd amount of cash on design hours. Now, I'm sure they're going to respond to this and talk about the complexity of my requirements and how they warned me about design hours - which is all true, they did tell that design hours would be higher because they would have to spend more time searching, and I accepted that. That doesn't change the fact that they wasted many design hours going down avenues that didn't adhere to my basic requirements.

DO NOT WORK WITH UIC - Building a house with UIC was the worst experience of my entire life. The…read moredesign phase went well, but it was all downhill from there. Once construction began, I noticed errors left and right. Windows would be missing, doors and walls were in the wrong place, etc. I had to micromanage them to get the house built correctly, because they did not notice the errors. For instance, I had five mirrors to be installed, and 4/5 were installed in the wrong rooms! They pushed my closing back seven times, from mid December all the way to late April, making planning my move nearly impossible. But the worst all happened after I moved in. The punch list at closing had over 30 items on it. After moving in, I noticed the poor quality of the house and parts of the house were already falling apart (Holes in the roof, doors not opening or closing, multiple windows leaking, door leaking, uneven floors, missing flooring in places, major circuit issues, lights not working, water lines not hooked up, windows left shattered from construction, and more). On average it would take UIC six months to fix any issues. Some issues took over a year! UIC would ignore my emails and calls 90% of the time, and working with them was nothing but frustration and disappointment. Do not work with UIC. Once they have your money, you will move to the bottom of their priority list if you are lucky or simply be completely ignored.
