Gala presenting a fanfare to the African culture with the backdrop of the building's ecofriendly & urban architectural design. In both areas I crossed paths with some of the Hospitality, A/V & Catering teams who were interactively busy & pleasant. GapBuster is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit & minority-founded educational organization dedicated to empowering the community through education benefiting their students/mentees in aiming to close the educational performance gap. The gala featured Keynote Speaker Kojo Yankah, former Member of the Ghana Parliament & founder of the African University College of Communications. Other special guets included Pat Lawson-Muse of NBC News 4, Congressman Jamie Raskin & Montgomery County Council At-Large Candidate Hoan Dang. The notable guest of the evening in which I had the esteemed honor in meeting, was King Peggy (Nana Amuah-Afenyi VI - born Peggielene Bartels), the first woman King & Reigning Chief of Tantum in Ghana. I didn't venture around the entire space, however on my way out I quickly spanned the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery (former First Lady of MoCo) that supports the arts & humanities. The portico to the plaza is a popular space for concerts, famer's market, festivals, live entertainment...I saw light advertisement for the upcoming seasonal ice skating rink & annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival which is held in front of the building. There's a parking garage across the street on Ellsworth Drive if you can't find street parking. I saw many people parking in the Whole Foods parking lot...not suggesting, just to note. From the Silver Spring Metro Rail Station - Red Line, it's a very casual 15 minute walk.

It was warm outside and I'm not sure if there was air conditioning because it was cooler outside then in. There was no elevator and as a person with mobility issues it was difficult, often painful, to reach the second floor where the service took place. The staff were pleasant mostly except when they asked us to go back downstairs for the cocktail hour, I refused because I knew that I would not be able to climb the stairs again. Cocktail hour was a joke since there were 2 bartenders to handle 200+ guests. I never got a cocktail or cool beverage - NOTHING WAS ON ICE! Not even the champagne. This venue was obviously not meant for this number of people - there were 2 unisex bathrooms with a total of 4 stalls - always a line, the caterer (required to use by the venue) was horrendous with all the food cold, drinks not cold and not enough. I'm sure that the bride and groom never noticed a problem, but when you leave such an event you shouldn't be figuring out where you want to go to eat. MY RECOMMENDATION - do not use this venue for more than 20 people.

For example, they flipped the ceremony room into the reception room and had the guests go downstairs for cocktails & hors d'oeuvres. Meanwhile, the wedding party went and took pictures in other areas. The only poor thing I have to say about the place was during the ceremony, the one window was directly in the sunlight so it made one side of the aisle really bright and difficult to see. But everything else was so great the place deserves five stars.

Everyone is INCREDIBLY friendly and accomodating! - The food: it's good, and plentiful...I might even say *too* plentiful - The rooms: they used to be itty-bitty and cramped (and many still are) but they have done a ton of renovations to make things better - Fun theme nights: Wednesday is crab-leg night, Wednesday is also karaoke night at the Pony Express (the bar), Tuesday at the Pony is trivia night, etc. - The costs are very reasonable and competitive Some things that annoy me: - You can't get your own food at the buffet anymore. And sometimes the staff don't have the best English. Usually this is something I do not care about at all, but sometimes there is a language barrier when you're trying to communicate what you want on your salad. - If you are renting this facility to give a training...BEWARE: you will be aggressively nickel-and-dimed if you require any additional help/supplies that are not explicitly in your contract! What I really don't like: - You feel stuck here. Downtown DC is a long ways away and expensive to get here, so you start to feel trapped the more you come here. I wish they had a shuttle into DC proper or something.

Affordable memberships considering the area. I have friends who have been members for years and still enjoy it. The golf course is really solid. They have a great mixture of holes. A couple of drivable par 4s and all the par 5s are reachable from certain tees. Two tough par 3s on the back that can make or break a round. Green surrounds are tough if you're in the wrong spot. The greens themselves are always in fantastic shape. They are severely sloped at times, so you must be accurate with your approach shots. I couldn't find the golf course architect on their website, but they did a good job considering the hilly topography and small footprint of the property. But I can also see one hitting pretty much the exact same shots every time no matter what tee box you're playing. Favorite hole: Par 5 12th, except for the yellow range balls that litter the left side. Downhill the entire way. Range on the left, trees and then the 18th hole on the right. Reachable for many with usually a blind-ish to a peninsula green with water right and long. The very tall red stake frames the front right of the green. Very cool hole before the brutally tough par 3 13th. The driving range is good and they have really nice Titleist practice balls to hit. The short game area is outstanding. I could spend hours out there with a few wedges. They have two small-ish putting greens on either side of the clubhouse. The restaurant is a great space and they have an area for bigger events. The food and service are both good too. Sadly, I have not enjoyed the pool area. Just a solid club overall. The members I have interacted with have all been great. I have had and heard somewhat mixed interactions with the people that run the place, but nothing bad enough to write about here.
