This was a cute small vineyard near Tides Inn that I was visiting for the weekend. They serve oysters and they have a solid list of 4 wines that they offer. I got a tasting that consisted of 2 whites, a rose, and 1 red. The red wine was by far my favorite out of all 4. The white wines would be great on a hot summer day, however, it was a chilly, sunny day, so the red wine hit the spot a little more. The outdoor seating of the winery was homey and they had fire pits around to warm customers. We also tried some oysters that were cooked with parmesan and garlic. I'm not a huge fan of oysters, but the garlic and parmesan made it a little easier to eat for sure. If you love oysters, this is definitely a winery to check out in the area. We ended up taking the bottle of red home and I can't wait to drink it again experience the flavor again. read more

A super friendly place, that got busier than I ever expected. They have 6 acres & I never asked how many cases/year, but make only 5 wines (and had only 3 when I visited). The name comes from their dog-saving efforts & location in an oyster-rich area. In fact by pure coincidence I arrived on an oyster celebration weekend, so I had a nice snack after my tasting. And who can resist the doggies basking in the vineyard! You can even bring them complementary biscuits, if you want to meet them. What I tried: 2014 Vidal Blanc: Pretty good; went well with my fish tacos. 2014 Shelter Dog Red (Chambourcin): Fruity and a bit spicy, which is different than other Chambourcins I've had in this area. Named after the pooches in the vineyard. 2014 Merlot: Lighter than other Merlots I'm used too, both in body and color. Kinda expensive though, at $33/bottle. And back to the location. Yes they have an inn & restaurant, although I didn't get to try either. But next time I think I'll plan a meal here. read more

This review is only for the Sip & Slurp, which is the tasting room and oyster stand. The location and ambiance are probably closer to 5 stars, but service and food not so much. We were greeted & seated immediately, which was nice but things sort of took a nosedive from there. Everyone was incredibly friendly, but service was super slow and it didn't seem that the staff has a routine down yet. Simple tasks like taking the order on an ipad seemed to take forever. The crab dip was salty to the point of being in-edible, and we were ready to leave by the time we received our broiled oysters. Our party had mixed reviews on the wines, but I thought the Pearl was enjoyable. read more

We stayed at The Tides Inn and rode the 1 mile to this winery and enjoyed the ride through the small town. We enjoyed a tasting $6 for 5 wines and loved it the wines are not typical Virginia wines they have great blends The grounds are nice and clean and the vineyards can be seen from the street. The lady that presented the wines was awesome and very knowledgable of the wines and area. We purchased 2 reds and got one free so $76 for wine a tasting and a glass of wine. The wine was overpriced and underwhelming. The vines were the scenery and appeared to not be healthy. Only food offering was 'charcuterie' which turned out to be a plastic box of prepackaged cheeses and meats with a ziplock bag of a few wheat thins. Ratio to meat/ cheese to crackers was way off. Asked to get more crackers. Was told they could sell us another charcuterie box but could not offer crackers separate. Would recommend checking out another vineyard instead. Not your typical vineyard, but a fun stop irregardless. It looks more like small farm. We stopped here on a whim while out in the Northern Neck. The corkscrews in front will catch your attention, you can't miss this place. When we arrived we walked onto a outside seating area, then onto a smaller seating area on concrete where Stacy, who works there, greeted us. She offered us a tasting for 7 dollars or a glass of one of the six wines or so for 7-8 dollars. We chose a glass, both of different white wines. We sat on the covered outdoor area sipping our wine out of the smallest stemless wine glasses I've ever seen. We talked to Stacy about the area and for further recommendations. The wine was really refreshing on a very hot day. We decided to buy glasses as they were only 2.50 each. I'm glad we stopped here. If you're in the area it's a good place to visit. read more

I actually stumbled upon Dog & Oyster while driving through the area -- it's hard to miss the 30' corkscrews flanking the entrance. It was a beautiful day to be out so I stopped in for a tasting. The screened-in porch is a beautiful place to sit for the tasting (done on the hour and half hour most days) and there are some outdoor tables for wines by the glass, general lounging, and oysters on the days they serve them (Thursday-Sunday). Oyster shells litter the area and sharpies are available on the tables so you can write your own message on a shell and place it on a table, in a barrel, whatever suits your fancy. Oh, and the vineyard is full of dogs (seven, all rescues from shelters) to keep away deer and other animals. Logically, the vineyard is dog-friendly, so bring your own four-legged friend (on a leash, of course). Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Though I am not a fan of oysters, my tasting companions got some raw on the half shell and said they were delicious. Wine is decent, not spectacular IMO, though they have won several awards. All the wines were designed to pair with oysters. Still, a nice place to come and have a sip and a definite go-to for oysters. read more

Love the dog and the Oyster! Went to check it out while on a bachelorette trip and we loved it! They have dogs that live in the vineyard when you pull up you can see and, even feed them as well. It was cold and rainy so unfortunately we didn't get to experience the outdoor vibes as I had hoped! They made up for that when they allow dogs inside as well! I feel like most wineries do not have that option. They weren't serving food but, with that since we enjoyed the tastings so much I will definitely be back to visit when they are. A quaint vineyard with a decent wine list. The true experience is to first "Sip" your wine in the enclosed tasting room with two long tables and then go outside and "Slurp" your food. I visited The Dog and Oyster Vineyard with friends today. The venue is lovely, and I was impressed with the quality of the wine. Bottles ranged from the low to mid $20s, and while I thought it was a trifle bit high for the quality, we were willing to pay. Both pourers were indifferent at best. Commentary pretty much consisted of, "This is a Rose'". When someone asked about the oysters, they were dismissively told to "go talk to the guy outside, he handles that". Unfortunately, they have an *extremely* strict policy about no eating in the tasting room. Unfortunately, the three, count 'em, three tables in the outdoor sitting area were full with people who were still enjoying their wine and oysters. The tasting room was filled with roughly eight people and being a holiday weekend, it was busy. Due to their inflexibility and limited seating, we elected to leave and spend our discretionary income elsewhere. As we were paying our tab ($6 per tasting, and the male pourer was rather stingy with the wine) a friend who had brought his dog with him saw a large bowl of Milkbones on the floor. As he was reaching for one, the cashier loudly announced that they were only for the "vineyard dogs", three yappy beagles that patrolled the grounds, ostensibly to deter deer. Really? Quibbling over a .02 Milkbone? They didn't seem to realize that the four of use would have paid for at least two bottles of wine and heaven only knows how many dozens of oysters this afternoon if we had been shown the slightest bit of flexibility and customer service. I still do not know why that a venue that only allows the consumption of food outdoors only has three outside tables. It is Labor Day weekend; you'd think that they would have figured out in back in May that three tables wouldn't cut it on a busy day. I understand that business must set parameters and have rules. What I do not understand is their lack of customer service and short sightedness. read more

Not only was the wine great and reasonably priced, but the presentation for the tastings was entertaining, the hostess knowledgeable. We met the owner a little later as we were leaving, and he was extremely affable and professional. My husband had a corporate retreat at the resort down the street from the winery. We arrived on a Friday afternoon and the winery is very pretty. Loved the humungous cork screws that you are able to take pictures with. They were able to accommodate us for a group tasting which was nice. The staff was very nice and attentive. Not my favorite wines, but they were not horrible. They had fresh oyster that you could purchase to have with you wine which was delicious. Nice stop for some wine if you are out that way. read more

This is a newly acquired vineyard purchased from an older one. The owner purchased this from Ingleside wines which means the vines are much older and didn't have to go through the maturation process. I wasn't expecting much from here but was pleasantly surprised with the quality. They are still offering the previous winery wines as well as their own. Unfortunately we came two weeks early before they start offering some of their whites and a red. The tasting room is small with rustic tables and chairs, communal seating. We enjoyed talking to the couple across from us. Their Chardonnay and Merlot are a must-buy. Tasting is $5 and well worth the trip. You can't miss the large cork screws out front. Go with friends. Make sure to use the bathroom elsewhere - it's a port-o-john and even though they try to make it nice, it's still not pleasant. I say they need an upgrade for that. read more

Came here on Memorial Day weekend and there was a little bit of a wait and the seating area was smaller than I expected. They don't let you use blankets to sit outside on the ground, I think to limit the amount of people due to COVID. Overall we had a good experience. The staff was very friendly and checked in with our table regularly. We had two little ones with us and they brought out complimentary ice cream for both of them, so sweet! read more

All dry only one sweet wine so great for me since I only like dry but not for sweet wine lovers so FYI for those sweet winos. Wine was decent, from what I could taste of it. Felt that it was a fairly small pour for a tasting that cost $8 pp. Difficult to truly appreciate each wine. Prices were close to $30 per bottle, which seems expensive. Perhaps I am just stuck back in a time where tastings were $5 and the average VA wine bottle ranged $14-$20. A rainy day called for some off the water activity durning our visit to Urbanna so we made the drive over to The Dog and Oyster Vineyard. The name interested us and upon arrival we discoved the name sake rescue dogs guarding the grapes. Our tasting was poured at a communal farm table which added to the enjoyment of our visit. The Pearl Vidal Blanc was the perfect counter point to the spicy oyster tacos. They shucked the oysters on the half shell right in front of us minutes before serving. No doubt about it-absolutely THE BEST fried soft shell crabs in the world. I'm a purist so I got the two crabs split. DELICIOUS. My opinion is that soft shells are a perfect food-they need nothing added and this is what they deliver. A very light coating and cooked to crispy yumminess. We visited a month ago and I'm still thinking about the occasion. It's also my mother's fave so I'm planning an overnight trip just to take her for the soft shell. We'll get there early enough on Friday to have them for lunch, then again on Saturday before we leave town! read more

This was a nice experience with friends in the early afternoon. I was surprised it's only $7 to taste 5 different wines, as most wineries in Pennsylvania charge much more for wine tastings that are subpar (in my opinion). That reminds me to say that I prefer dry wines and is probably why I liked the Dog & Oyster's selection. The man who gave us the tasting was knowledgeable and very friendly (but gave us our space to have girl talk). I would definitely come back. I think my only recommendation is that it would be nice if they served cheese and some form of bread with the tasting, although they do apparently serve food here later in the day. read more

Because I didn't have to use the bathroom (porta-potty), I will gladly give this place 5 stars. It was very cute and eclectic, with a cute gift shop. The wines were nice and the tasting was very inexpensive. My only real concern was for the dogs... They pride themselves with rescuing the pups on the property, but they appeared to live outdoors only for the purpose of protecting the crops from deer. I didn't see a dog house or any place for them to escape from the hot sun. Since the name is "Dog & Oyster," I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they have provided the dogs with a comfortable place to go to get out of the sun/rain/etc. read more

This winery is one of my favorites and I live a short drive to Napa, Ca. We visit the area every summer and during one of our visits we decided to see what Va has to offer with its wineries. First off I love dogs and love the rescues that roam the vineyards, the atmosphere is super relaxed. I enjoyed chatting with the owner, he was welcoming and warm. The wine was good the atmosphere is great and I just love the grounds. This is my all time favorite spot in VA and will continue to visit every summer. read more
