Excellent wines and good food! I learned about Wind at the Coastal Virginia Wine Festival where they had a booth. I enjoyed their wines there so we decided to visit their winery. We enjoy dry wines, which Wind had in many varieties. They also offer sweet wines, if that's more to your liking. My husband likes Chambourcin, and I enjoy Sangiovese. We bought flights of four wines to share so we could taste 8 different wines. They offer a good variety of foods to order in their Deadrise Kitchen. We selected the flatbread pizza, crab cakes, and broccoli salad to share. Everything went very well together. The winery is located in a large barn-like building with tall ceilings, a fireplace, and a loft. There was a party for a bride in the loft, and we really couldn't hear them very much. While it was a quiet day when we were there, they also have days when they have hot air balloons and monster trucks, as well as activities for children. Everyone was friendly and eager to meet us and make our visit pleasant. We left with some bottles of wine to enjoy at home and remember our afternoon at Wind.

Monster Show and Bud Break Festival

Our experience at Wind Vineyards for the Monster Show and Bud Break Festival was truly memorable. The property's stunning beauty and ample space set the stage for an unforgettable event. With a diverse array of events scheduled throughout the year, Wind Vineyards appears to be a versatile and exciting venue. Personally, I'm eager to explore future offerings such as concerts or wine classes, possibly drawing inspiration from the rich experiences offered at Napa Kitchen. I was shocked by the $4 price tag on a bottle of Aquafina water by a vendor. It's simply outrageous! Water is an essential necessity for the health of everyone and given the "no outside drinks" policy and lack of water fountains, the venue and/or vendors should provide water at a much more reasonable markup ($1). We have suggestions for improvement with the venue. The seating area is not the most helpful design, with a downward slope that disrupts the view compared to a proper stadium seating/upward slope. Though completely necessary, the safety barriers also impeded the view, especially for the smaller events like lawnmower racing and the kids Power Wheels competition. It may not be feasible, but digging out or building up the area to add a natural barrier and an upward slope (retaining wall?) to get the seating area higher than the course could improve the view for spectators. Chaining speakers along the length of the fence line would help everyone hear, and having an emcee would enhance the experience (I think I read the emcee canceled at the last minute for Saturday). Maybe it was just the lack of an announcer, but it felt like there was quite a bit of down time, especially during the main event. I didn't time it, but it felt like the trucks ran for maybe 1 hour of the 3 hour main event. Plus, the jump pad was deflated half the day, which was disappointing to the kids and parents. Our 10 year old was not happy about it, as the jump pad was pretty much the only activity for his age group included in the ticket cost. There was a small, inflatable laser tag arena ($5) and we took him on the Grape Crusher Monster Truck Ride ($16), but they both cost extra. Strawberry Street's photo menu is misleading, as they don't offer lettuce for burgers or coleslaw for BBQ. And be sure to shop around, because vendors were selling similar items at different prices, like $4 for Aquafina filtered water compared to $2 for Deer Park spring water. $2.50 at one place for Swiss Miss hot cocoa and $3.00 at another. On the bright side, the portable bathrooms were clean, and the lines throughout the event were manageable. The people of Wind Vineyards seemed genuinely friendly and helpful. Vendor stands offered a variety of food, treats, and drinks, both hot and cold. Plus there were vendors with goods to buy for those that love to shop. Parking was abundant, and the tailgate pass looked fantastic, with tailgaters bringing grills and coolers and enjoying front-row seating. There were additional activities for small children like pony rides, a barrel train, gem mining, and face painting (most cost extra). The event at Wind Vineyards was a blast! The monster trucks were absolutely awesome to see outdoors and the demolition derby provided entertaining thrills. These attractions really added to the overall excitement of the day. IMHO, keep your eye out for events from this venue and go enjoy the fun!

You enter through the gate and head inside to get your wine. The couple running this winery were very nice and helped me pick our four wines to try. I don't like oaky whites or tanniny reds, but was able to find four whites to try: 2024 Sunrise on the James, which was semi-sweet and tart from the blood orange; 2024 Island Time, semi-sweet with a tart pineapple flavor; 2021 Vidal Blanc, which I thought had a funny smell and taste; 2023 River Breeze, which was citrusy but also kind of watery. I sat outside and listened to a talented guitar on the covered patio. The service was top notch, and the owners were really friendly, but I personally didn't like any of the wines I tried.

The grapes are a bit younger (oldest vines about five years) so the flavors are sharp and punchy. There drinkable now but also will age well. They have quite a variety on the tasting menu - from port style, whites and reds. We had a great tasting experience with one of the owners and felt comfortable sitting and drinking wine after our wine tasting. No snacks yet, but they are planning on getting.

I love finding hidden gems like the Rivah Vineyards at the Grove. I was in the area exploring some…read moreof the other wineries (there are three others within 10-15 driving distance) and wanted to try Rivah Vineyards since it is the newest, having only been open since November 2019. NOTE: If using your phone's GPS, Google Maps or WAZE are slightly off. Once your GPS indicates, "you've arrived" drive another 2-3 minutes and you'll see the entrance on your right. Drive up the slight incline and the first building on your right is where the main tasting room is located. Likely as you get out of your car, the unofficial mascot Happy (young chocolate lab mix) will come running up. But no worries, since he's a friendly pup who probably will have a ball in his mouth and just wants to play catch. Oh yeah, this place is very dog friendly! The best part of Rivah Vineyards, is the proprietor, Bryce. He immediately greeted our party and his enthusiasm was evident. Bryce is a local farmer and grower, who has spent many years assisting other vineyards in the area with their operations. So after helping other people, he decided to set up his own winery...and his decision is our gain for Virginia's every expanding wine industry. Bryce is an encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to Virginia wines and we probably spent more time talking to him about how the high clay content determines which grapes grow the best than, we spent actually spent drinking wines. If visiting and lucky enough to encounter Bryce, ask him about VA's terroir. Terroir in French literally means "soil" or "earth" and having a background as a farmer, allows Bryce to know what grapes can be grown for their estate varietals and which grapes are best grown in other parts of VA. For instance, while I really enjoy viognier white wines and at one time, this was designated as the "official grape of Va," Bryce actually explained to us that viognier grapes are rather inconsistent and don't really grow so well in VA's terroir. Honestly, too often when I go to wineries, the people I speak with during my tastings are either reading from a card describing the wines or don't really have a background on the product. Speaking with Bryce was like a "Master Class" on wine production. As for the wines themselves, really good for a small operation! I picked up these three bottles: YEOCOMICO WHITE: Blend of Vidal Blanc, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnel, and an off dry Petit Manseng. Not too dry and not too sweet. Good balanced white wine which pairs well with poultry and seafood. ELEMENT: One of the better VA RED wines I've tasted in a long time. Aged in French and American oak, this blend of Petite Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, and Tannat. slight notes of plum and pepper corns and black currents. Probably best with red meat, but honestly, I could also enjoy this with cheese and crusty bread. SWEET SUE: A blend of 95% Chambourcin and 5% Concord concentrate aged in stainless steel. Named after Bryce's grandmother, this Rosé speaks of the winery owner's grandmother, definitely a strong palate of red berries and fruit supported by a 4% residual sugar. I wouldn't call this a "dessert wine" since there's low sugars, but it has a nice finish without being sickly sweet. Rivah Vineyards does not have leather couches or dark hardwood tables with large stone fireplaces, typical of some of the more "high-end" tasting rooms found in other VA wineries. But don't let that discourage you from visiting. There is a deck out back with a nice view of the Yeocomico river, which should be great for enjoying a glass of wine when the weather warms up. If in the area visiting some of the larger established wineries, I also HIGHLY recommend stopping by Rivah Vineyards to sample some of their excellent wines. And during your visit, be sure to play a few rounds of catch with Happy.
