We are new to town and wanted to get our dog's nails trimmed before moving into a house with new floors. The Dogg House answered the phone to answer my questions and allow walk-in appointments for nail trims. They were so patient with my large (and to my surprise, anxious) dog. I have high maintenance animals. My cats always do well here as they are able to board together. However, my dog doesn't board well...this last visit where she was there for 2.5 weeks proved this. My dog is an italian greyhound. She is a Velcro dog and needs human companionship regularly. They provide human playtime for her so she doesn't get lonely. They did this. Knowing she doesn't board well, and with the $$ I was paying, I asked to receive updates (daily) on her care. I had to email often to remind them about this. They emailed me 2x with pics. Overall, not what I wanted. Luna is a high maintenance dog, and changes such as boarding cause her high stress. She was pretty hoarse upon her return and had lost significant weight. She ate every meal but her pacing and anxiety didn't help. I don't have anything negative to say about this business, but for the care of my pets, I won't board them again because my dog just doesn't do well, even though my cats do enjoy their time away. read more

Once again I am sitting up with my dog whose mouth in the back corner was cut clear thru during his grooming with Megan. It is now October and it happened the end of June. In spite of my taking him to the Greenbriar emergency that night because he was stressed and appeared to be in pain, I had no idea where the pain was. i had no idea that his mouth was cut so badly it should have had stitches because no one told me it had happened. The doctors said they couldn't find any reason for the pain. They too never thought to check the mouth for a serious cut. So as I wondered about his behavior and worried when he wouldn't eat the sliced mouth began healing irregularly on its own and now causes him discomfort. So as I tend to him now I am still anguished that he was hurt so badly by the people he trusted and they were not even big enough to tell us it happened. It was not the first time he was harmed by scissors here. but they denied it happened the first time because they don't use sharp scissors is what i was told. Max's mouth is evidence they do in fact use sharp scissors and they also hide any injury they cause whenever possible. read more

Super excited to have found somewhere that my pup comes back home healthy, clean, and obviously very happy. We tried two other places in Charlottesville with higher ratings and she came home timid, thinner, and looking a bit frazzled. On top of that the workers actually seem to like animals and are very nice . The other places it was as though you were inconveniencing them . read more

So, I have found that short stays only (no more for my dogs) would be advisable or just none at all. After using them a few times I left my dogs there for 11 days while on vacation. Picked my otherwise very healthy dogs up and ended up in the Emergency Vet Clinic because one had a UTI....yes, a UTI!?! When I contacted the owner of The Dogg House, Barton, he was defensive, uncaring, refused any responsibility, and get this, hung up on me. I will never ever take my dogs there again and the more "dog people" I encounter I'm hearing that this is not the first time they've heard of dogs acquiring UTI's while under the care of this facility. read more

We were leaving town and I forgot to set up boarding for our cat with our vet til the last minute. They were full but recommended The Dogg House. My wife went by and they were very accommodating, even at the last minute. There had been a microburst the day before and things were a mess in the area, but the folks were in there taking care of the animals. Good job! Definitely appreciate the good service. read more

BOARDING: My dog has stayed here for short stays 24-48 hours and has come back fine, although he always trembles when he reenters the place. Some staff members are very friendly, others not so much. Recently he stayed for a longer period of time and I was told that he did great, no problems. Since coming home his voice has been hoarse and he's unable to fully bark, I'm assuming due to either barking excessively or being choked on a leash during his stay. He also has an extremely upset stomach - I'm not sure if he caught a GI bug there or if something was off in what he was fed... but he had an accident in his crate - loose stool everywhere as well as vomit, which he has never done in his whole life, even before he was potty trained. He then had several more accidents in the house because he couldn't even make it to the door in time to go outside. His stool has been loose and yellow for days now and he's also not interested in food. He didn't have any of these issues prior to his stay. Needless to stay, my dog and I will not be returning to the Dogg House. read more

I love the Dogg House. I have a rat terrier and this has been the only place in Charlottesville where I feel comfortable leaving my dog. I also like that it's not a huge place. The staff seems great. read more

I was VERY pleased with our dog's stay while we were out of town for a couple of days! He was very happy when I dropped him off which kind of hurt my feelings a bit, lol! I am really glad he felt so comfortable with the staff :) the staff said he is a very good boarder which I was originally nervous about since this was the first time he had been boarded since 2011. We have used the Dogg House for 12 years for 3 different dogs. Our current Lhasa Apso goes there monthly to be groomed and is always excited to go. We have boarded her many times in the last 3 years. She races to the door and scratches on the glass to get in. I love that they always pick her up and snuggle her before letting her go back to be boarded. She is happy when we pick her up. ABSOLUTELY fabulous!!! My dog fozzie is a wheaten / poodle mutt/mix. When we take him to get groomed, if we don't give instructions, he always comes back looking like a shitzu or something else that doesn't look like "him". As a result, I have resulted to giving specific instructions. Most the time, that doesn't get me much further than no instructions at all - because it can be a lot to execute/remember on behalf of the groomer - which i understand. NOT the case at The Dogg House! Amy absolutely nailed it. We spend most of our time in NYC and this is easily the best groom Fozzie has ever had. Amy listened to my instructions and nailed each one. She was kind and patient with Fozzie, who can be a little nervous around new people and spaces, and yet Amy and the team found a way to manage Fozzie perfectly. On top of that they offered incredibly customer service start to finish and very fair pricing. I cannot recommend The Dogg House or Amy enough. Fozzie and I thank you! read more

We have taken 2 of our dogs to the Dogg House for both boarding and grooming. Our Golden, still quite a puppy at heart, enjoys his stay and chance to get outside and have someone to throw the ball for him while we're away. Our little Cocker mix always seems so pleased when she has been bathed and groomed, we think she thinks she's been to a spa. We've always found the owner and managers to be friendly, knowledgable, and helpful and really care about the animals. read more

I've been taking my dog here since I moved to the area over a year ago. At first, they did a very nice job on my dog's cut. I purposely ask for the same lady to ensure a similar look and high quality result each time. During my last visit, I dropped off my dog to the same groomer. When I picked him up, another woman brought him out and had clearly been cutting his hair. When I left, I noticed that the cut was incredibly uneven and looked like a Kindergarten project. I had to clean it up at home. I was so disappointed because it confirmed that it had been done by a different technician. About 2 days later, I had to take my dog to the vet for an unrelated issue and decided to have his anal glands checked because he had been biting at his rear. They said the glands had clearly not been expressed for a long time. Dogg House advertises this as part of the grooming services. After that combined experience, I am disappointed to say I will be finding a new groomer. read more

My dog has stayed here twice, both times for a short weekend while I was away in DC. The first time he stayed, he returned home a little shellshocked and would hardly eat or drink for a few days, and his voice was hoarse as if he had been barking or yipping all weekend. I didn't think much of it because he recovered after a few days. The second time he returned to me he was much worse. When I went to pick him up, the employees there were quick to tell me that he was very friendly to everyone and had a great stay (I know my dog well enough to know that this was a lie...he loves other dogs but he hates everyone who isn't me), and that he had just eaten breakfast. As soon as I got home I noticed he was acting all stressed and sad again, but this time he couldn't hardly walk and he was shaking uncontrollably. He was only able to take a few steps on his stiff legs before falling over and shaking. He wouldn't eat or drink anything for days. This is a dog who begs for food when I do homework because the rustling of the paper sounds like a food wrapper...and I couldn't get him to eat a piece of chicken I cooked for my dinner or any of his treats. It only got worse after a few days of rest, so I called the Dogg House to ask if anything had happened. They told me that he had been acting sad and didn't eat at all after he was dropped off (contrary to what they told me when I picked him up). After consulting my friends and coworkers I found out that a couple of them have had similar first-hand negative experiences, including one dog which was boarded for a few weeks and was picked up with a horrible infection on its tail that never received medical attention. DO NOT BOARD HERE. There are enough other options in this town that it isn't worth the risk to bring your dog here. read more
