I do not really have a rating, as I was told they are unable to take on new grooming clients. The interaction was via email only, so cannot speak to attitude, just that they did respond to my request promptly and cordially, although succinctly. Perhaps Yelp should remove Pet Grooming as a Service, or add a notice that this Business is not taking on new grooming clients. Since the Owner stated in her response that they do not support or have anything to do with Yelp, maybe a better idea is to remove this business from the search results for Pet Grooming. read more

I have been taking my dog Leo, a six pound toy poodle, to Creatures Great and Small since he has been a puppy (since July 2020). I distinctly remember the first conversation where the team informed me that they take extra care acclimating puppies. They were extremely informative and answered all my questions. Trust me I had a lot of questions because at the time Leo only weighed 1.75 pounds. Nevertheless, Leo had an amazing experience and I have taken him there ever since. He even won their Christmas photo competition in December 2020. The staff listens when it comes to my cutting requirements and needs. This place may be a good places but the customer service I experienced made me afraid my dog was not going to be okay. Unfortunately, I did not to get to do my tour of the office before I dropped off my dog for the first time because I ended up getting Covid 6 weeks before my vacation and had to call them and cancel my tour. This was my first time ever boarding my dog. As a new dog owner (7 months in) I was expecting a little different experience. I was expecting to be made to feel comfortable I was leaving my new baby with new people. I was not warned I could not enter the business. Not being warned and the way I was treated comes across as extremely sketchy and non-trustworthy. I pulled up to the business to drop off my dog. I let my dog out on the ground. I was still in my car and the next thing I know my dog was scooped up. When I got out of my car, I saw lady holding my dog The lady who never told me who she was. My dog was visibly shaking and he is a very socialized dog. This was very unsettling. As I was trying to talk to her she backed away towards the door. I asked her if I could leave dog toys and bed for my dog she said I didn't need to, but I said I would prefer to. So she took the toys in a bag that I gave her. I told her my dog food schedule, and she said that cannot happen. I asked her why not. She said they would not be available to feed those times but close to it. She asked when I was coming back and then back towards the door and opened it and went in. I didn't get to say goodbye to my dog, which was making me worried. I had multiple questions that I did not get to ask because she just went in the door. I was very close to tears because I wasn't sure what was happening. As I was driving to the airport I was somewhat panicked. The more I thought about it I became upset about the whole situation because I was worried for my dog. I was deciding if I should go back and get my dog but then worried because I didn't know who I would find it that time of day since it was 4pm. I felt like I had no other option at this point. My entire vacation I was worried about my dog. I felt he may not be safe and I was worried about his living condition's. Every day I wanted to call to check on my dog but was afraid of the way I would most likely be treated. When I picked up my dog still not know about this sketchy practice and I was told I could not come in. When I asked why I was told there was someone that was immunocompromised. However, as a healthcare provider if that person was actually compromised everyone in the office would be wearing mask because everyone the office staff interacts with exposes everyone in that office. So again I was left to feel that they are hiding something. Made me wonder if they are just avoiding covid germs and or their business has bad practices. As a business the person who is "compromised" should wear a mask so people can come in. I was told I could not get my dog since I was due to pick him up tomorrow. I said I want my dog today that I missed him. A lady not sure who said she had planned to groom him that day. I told her that was okay I would rather see my dog. I was told to shut the door and I made the comment this is a ridiculous business practice and shut the door. I never stepped foot inside the store just had the door cracked while speaking to the person who didn't tell me who they were. I did not address how I was feeling at the time because I was running on fumes due to such little sleep. My flight got in at 1am and I had I had only slept 4h. At this point I was now upset once I shut the door. I just handed them my debit card and didn't say anything else. I noticed they charged me for that night even though I was picking my dog up early. I didn't say anything because I wasn't sure if they had planned staffing for my dog. I wanted to address the rudeness by the people in the store but knew I was too tired and didn't want my emotions getting the better of me and I say hateful things. As a business when you have new clients your business model should very clearly explained to that person. No one apologized for the inconvenience or how they made me feel. What you do with my dog should be explained to me. Instead of being able to enjoy my vacation I was worried the entire time. I paid for a service and should not be made to feel that way. Now I am left with a strong distrust for this business and will never return. Had customer service been better this review would not have been written! I just wanted to feel safe about leaving my dog that I love. read more

Just called to make an appointment and was told they are not accepting new clients, they have not accepted new clients for the past 2 years and have no plans to change that anytime soon. Guess they should update YELP so people don't waste their time calling them. The receptionist was not rude, but she wasn't friendly either, she was very short and made no effort to even offer to be put on a call back list should their scheduling change in the future... it was pretty much a simple "no new clients" to every question I asked. Now I won't ever bother calling back, It definitely could have been handled differently. I think anyone that calls a place of business and receives an off putting and unwelcoming response like I did would definitely feel some sort of way. read more

First off they take Covid precautions! Second we are picky about our two standard golden doodles and have tried several different groomers. I'm writing this review because I know how hard it is to find the perfect match. CGS does amazing work! My dogs are not easy to groom because of their curly fur. It takes professionalism, training and experience. I've had my girls come from other groomers cut by blades because they'd rather shave, or their fluffy tails completely shaved off. CGS take the TIME to brush and 'fluff' them. CGS seems to have that extra touch needed on dogs with special coats. They come home super soft and smell amazing!! The staff is super friendly, personable and well knowledgeable. Drop off is flexible. I highly recommend them and know my girls are in great hands while there. My husband and I boarded our Italian Greyhound here while visiting Charlottesville, VA. Italian Greyhounds are generally timid, sensitive dogs and we rarely board our dog so I was a little nervous about dropping him off for the day. The staff could not have been more accommodating. They figured out which dogs he placed best with and when we picked him up we found him in the grooming area where he could be around staff. He seemed very content there and I have no doubt he was cared for well. In reading other reviews, sure the place does smell like dogs are there but I could care less. What do you care about more...your dog being well cared for or the dog smell? I think it is an unrealistic expectation to hope that a dog boarding facility won't have a dog smell. I highly doubt the dogs mind. Great overall experience and very thankful my husband found this place. read more

We have been using Creatures Great and Small for two years for every trip that we go on for our two dogs - one large and one small. It is a small, family-run (mother and daughter) business where you will be working directly with the owner on each visit. They are absolutely great with our dogs, are fairly priced, and overall just go the extra mile to ensure that your dog will be very well cared for. Although their facilities are not the newest, they make up for it in one-on-one time with your dogs. If you want a fancy brand-new facility run by college student labor, then this is not your place. If you want a place that is run by dog-loving breeders, then this is it. Also, they will not up-charge you for things like having a bed for your dog, taking them outside and playing with them, and other should-be necessities like most other dog kennels in the Charlottesville area. With them, it's a flat rate - period. Overall, I'd highly recommend them. I use them frequently - at least once a month as I travel quite a bit - and have pointed many of my friends and family to them. You won't be disappointed with their level of care for your animal! read more

UPDATE #2: After a few more groomings I can say that I am thrilled with CGAS. They check with me to know exactly how I want my dog cut, and while I know it kills them not to cut breed standard (as they judge show dogs and are very well versed in breed standard cuts) they have been very accommodating and check in with us often. While we had a rocky start, I am pleased to say we are very pleased with CGAS now and their willingness to make it right with us. read more

I've been bringing my two cavalier Spaniels here for a year. I absolutely adore the love and attention that the owner and her mother give my dogs. I've gotten several compliments on how clean and neat the boys look after being groomed. Booked this place for a weekend stay for our two labrador retrievers after getting one of those 1/2 price deals from The Hook deal saver. The stench of the place was an immediate turn off when you walk in the front door... looks run down and old... they have no computers, no web site, didn't even ask me about our dogs being up to date on shots. The good news is that I doubt my dogs were bothered by the smell- though we had to give both a bath when they got home. We've always used Pampered Pets- I'll go back to them. Saving a few $$ wasn't worth it. read more

This mom and daughter business isn't fancy, but the dogs are safe, happy and WELL cared for while there. Yep, Creatures Great and Small smells like dogs. Happy dogs. I've been going there with my beloved furry children for 12 years, and I wouldn't ever take them anywhere else. I have never written a review before but this place deserves it. It was my puppies first time being groomed ever and the staff here went above and beyond to make sure he had a good calm experience. They let him play with the other dogs to help him relax before even starting his cut. I have used Creatures Great and Small on several occasions now and was very satisfied. They are true animal lovers and took good care of my dogs. Yes, the place is not shiny and brand new, but I don't really think my dogs minded. They (and I) were more concerned that they felt loved like they do at home. They DO have a web site and they definitely had me provide my vet's number for proof of shoots and I think I had to show my rabies vaccination proof, too. They allowed my poor dog to loose 1-1/2 pounds and have severe diarrhea for a week. When we picked him up he had vomit on his mouth when I questioned it she said oh he just ate it's food, we mix wet and dry so my daughter picked him up, as I paid. Then when we were walking out the older women who works there was walking in said he's had explosive diarrhea all week so I kept changing his food and gave him hamburger. As we got into car my daughter was very worried and when I looked at him I could tell he was not ok so rushed him to the vet, bloody stools severe dehydration and vomiting .lab values awful.they never once called me never called vet !!!!!do not use them read more

While Eric. L is correct - the kennel smells like dog - my dogs LOVED it! And since they were the ones staying there and not me, that's what counted for me. My Irish Setter and retired racing Greyhounds would wag their tails like mad whenever we pulled up to this kennel. And they didn't do this for other places where they have stayed. Just at Creatures. I could count on the owners to take my dogs on short notice (and I had a number of family emergencies where this was incredibly helpful), and they would spot things going on with the dogs such as skin or tooth problems that I hadn't noticed. When my Setter was dying with bone cancer and I had to board him, they gave him the most loving and compassionate care and they would call me at home to offer support and suggestions for keeping him comfortable. When I had to put him down they grieved with me. The kennel has recently gone through renovation and looks spiffier than it used to - but if looks and odor matter, I suggest going somewhere else. If working with dog experts who develop a relationship with your dogs matter, then I can't think of a better place. read more

They know everything about dogs, and have given me amazing advice countless times over the years. I visited this kennel on October 24 as I wanted to see the conditions of this kennel for my standard poodle. I was shocked to see the kennel area. No water dishes in the kennels. There were about seven dogs being kenneled that day. No blankets or sleeping pads for the dogs, just concrete flooring. The worst sight was a large dog, looking like a wolfhound breed, with an open bleeding sore on its back. I asked the owner who was showing me around what was the sore. Her indifference was noticeable, with no seeming interest in having it medically attended to. The outdoor walk area was a narrow grassy area along a fence on the edge of a parking lot. Kenneled dogs are to be walked twice a day, as I was told. There was only one kennel attendant, her cigarettes apparent, and she was standing by the back door. Where was a fan or circulating fresh air for the boarded animals, or even light of some sort. Where was the water for the animals to drink? Where was the care and attention I would expect for the injured animal? This was almost inhumane environment, and the level of attention and kennel attendants absent except for the one smoker, should be a warning. This kennel is not any place for your pet if you care about its health and happiness while you are away. read more
