I'm no stranger to the Driskill Bar, but I'm no regular either. The Driskill Bar is one of those rare places you go when you want to savor a martini and enjoy quiet conversation; as opposed to downing six double dirties to the loud thumping of house music, and a guy's crotch in your face. Most of the time I prefer the latter...hence why I'm not a regular. My reviews of the Driskill Hotel for the Democratic watch party during the 2008 midterms, and my subsequent update chronicling Yvette's fabulous wedding probably already made clear as glass that I am a big fan of the hotel, and the bar is no exception. Once, I had a woman ask what a good date around Austin would entail. Rapidly adjusting for their demographic, I decided not to suggest my idea of a good date, which is usually one that involves a sea of vodka, not a penny out of my pocket, and spontaneous vehicular activity that probably makes Kar extremely uncomfortable. These were people in their 50's; I had to vamp until I came up with a plan. First off, I suggested the Driskill as the perfect place to grab a martini. It's intimate, but there is a copious amount of decor that provides excellent conversation starters. Cowboy statues, guns for lamps...the list goes on and on. It's a desirable blend of low-key and high-end. Afterwards, I suggested dinner at any number of venues, followed by a show at Esther's Follies. My brain refused to play the tape forward after that, but hey, I thought my contribution sounded nice. My best friend, Jen L., had come into town, but this was no ordinary visit. This go around, she was interested in MOVING to Austin, which would truly be the final cap on crowning this city the most amazing city for me, even though it already is. With Jen having grown up in LA and Marin County, and having lived and worked in Boston, it was my job to portray Austin as the living, breathing embodiment of everything that is desirable about the Coasts, right smack dab in the middle of Texas. Luckily, Austin pretty much sells itself, but I was on a mission nonetheless. I decided the Driskill Bar would be a perfect place for Jen and I to grab a pre-dinner cocktail, and would be my answer to the historical hotels she introduced to me during my visit to Boston and Pasadena. She loved the ambiance immediately, as it was very much in the same "old school" vein as the Omni Parker House in Boston, or even the Adolphus in Dallas (the lobby only; remember, the service sucked). Of course, it was old school heavily infused with Texas imagery, but more along the lines of elegant Texas imagery, and less along the lines of trailer parks and gun shows that the rest of the country imagines. Our bartender was the older gentlemen who has been there forever, and from what I've seen, is quite the staple. He mixed an excellent Grey Goose martini, and even randomly serenaded us once our fried oyster platter came out. I loved the presentation of the oysters, and the olive tapenade included in the bruschetta sampler was quite flavorful. We enjoyed a second martini before heading out. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this place epitomizes the phrase "hard drink in a dark bar." Occasionally you'll find me here for a date, before a night out, or after a church service. Drinks at The Driskill is on every "Things You Must Do In Austin" list. Since we didn't get to go on our first visit we made it a point to visit during our second trip. The ambiance is everything and then some. Dark wood, dimly lit but not so much where you have to squint or need a flashlight to see anything. Definitely try the Texas Revolver. It looks like a strong cocktail, but it really isn't. I mean it's not served with an umbrella, but it won't knock you out. And it's delicious. The truffle popcorn is a must because, duh, truffles. I'd pass on the sliders unless you specify how you want them cooked. They cooked ours a bit too long and they were well well done. I also really appreciated the scene here. I mean, it's not even a scene. Just a bunch of people hanging out and enjoying cocktails in a cool environment. A cool vibe here. read more

Met some friends here on a Saturday afternoon. This is a very nice bar inside the famous Driskill hotel. There is plenty of seating in the area and the decor is very nice. The sofas and chairs are very comfortable. There are some tv's but this definitely isn't a sports bar. This is a sit back and relax while you visit with friends kind of place. We did not try the cocktails on our visit but I've heard great things about them from others. The beer was cold and the selection was more than adequate, so we were happy. Our server was pleasant and she took good care of us, checking on us to ensure that we were content. There was no music when we visited, but I've heard great things about their entertainment. We will definitely return during the evening to take advantage of that. If you find yourself on Sixth and you're in need of a quiet bar to recover from the heat and craziness outside, this place is a great spot. read more

Well I gotta say I'm really disappointed in myself. I'm disappointed that I didn't try this gem of a place out earlier and only recently discovered it. The Driskill Bar really impressed me, I think I found my go-to place for swank and sophisticated. I checked them out for happy hour, I really dig the ambience here. Plenty of leather couch seating, tables are spread out, a huge grand piano, several TVs around, live music playing, and then you hit the bar. Andrew was my bartender, his professionalism and service was impeccable. It's half off on bar appetizers from 5-7pm and discounts on cocktails too. Andrew gave me a couple of recommendations, first being the Angus Beef Sliders. But it was the Moroccan Lamb Sliders that caught my eye so I went there first. It comes out timely and with plenty of fries, the sliders are small but full of flavor. The lamb was a bit on the dry side so I told Andrew to put in an order for the Angus Sliders. WHOA! (that's Joey Lawrence from "Blossom") Hot damn I should have listened to Andrew cuz those Angus Beef Sliders were awesome! Full of flavor, with bacon and a black truffle sauce. Plus their smoked ketchup is soooo tasty! It's actually made in-house, and since I'm a ketchup kinda guy I'd have to say that this is the best ketchup in town. They need to bottle it up and sell it by the gallon, I'll drink it w/ a straw for the tomatoes and make a Prostate Cocktail. Yeah, guys need more of that, right? There was a tequila debate amongst the bartenders and us patrons, so they let us sample some Patron and Julio to help set us straight. WHOA! I stayed here for a quick business trip. The bar has a great ambience but was really really loud and dark. I ended up moving from the bar to the restaurant for a quiet meal instead. The food was very food, the service was good (slightly slow but very kind!), and it was much quieter than the bar. read more

GREAT TEXAS BAR!!! Really beautiful we understand it was refurbished and it is SPECTACULAR! The lobby is inviting a bit like stepping back to a gentler time with stained glass chandeliers and beveled glass doors, just STRIKING! The bar is upstairs to the left and John Wayne would have loved it here. Large oversized chairs, cow side under glass top tables, lots of seating stools should it become crowded too. I finally made it to the Driskill after years of hearing about it. The Driskill is a beautiful old school hotel with an old school bar. To feel a little fancy (or to pay DC prices for drinks, my old stomping grounds) we headed in for a drink at the Driskill bar. The bar was an interesting place to meet new people. While at the bar I saw this nerdy guy trying to hitting hard on this younger girl who was clearly conflicted if she wanted to be flirting with him or not. A free drink is a free drink though. Ha! I ordere the batini and my husband ordered a drink called Barton springs. Both drinks were clearly well made and refreshing. I would recommend at least grabbing a drink for a nice place to relax, grab some AC and check out some interesting indoor people watching. read more

The Driskill Bar is located inside the World Famous Hotel and is a must try in Austin, So I was told. Unfortunately the service ruined the experience for us. We walked in on a hot summer's night wanting some refreshment from the heat and to finish our night in the best way possible. We had dressed up and we were ready to indulge. We sat down at a table and waited for our server, another server let us know we could sit anywhere we wanted, they were not busy. Our server, Rosa, finally came by and we ordered our cocktails to start and waters, it was so hot outside and we needed to hydrate. Our cocktails didn't take too long, and we sipped them while chatting and realized after our drinks were empty, that Rosa had not been by to check on us since she dropped the drinks. we looked at the menu to order food and a bottle of wine to share, but Rosa did not come back by for 45 MINUTES. What??? We sat at our table drinking the melted ice for 45 minutes before she even checked on us. We were shocked. When she came back by, we just asked for the check, she told us she was working another group across the room and forgot about us. Nice, we were forgotten at one of the nicest Hotels in Austin. We would have loved to order food, share a couple of bottles of wine, but we were so annoyed we just asked for the check. She didn't even refill our waters, we just continued to sit there and 20 minutes later she came by and said "oops, did I not give you your check?" and giggled. So unprofessional, we were forgotten again, she came back shortly after with the check. We were so disappointed with our experience, we spent over an hour wasting our time for 1 cocktail each. When we first walked in we thought about booking our next trip to Austin and staying in the Hotel, but after this experience, we will never come back. We ended up leaving and going to another restaurant down the road, it wasn't as pretty inside, but the service felt like the 5 stars we were expecting from the Driskill. We had another couple that we're friends with let us know they were booking their trip to Austin and asked us about the Driskill, we told them to avoid it, and they ended up booking at another hotel for their trip. If you're in the area, definitely walk in the lobby to look at the gorgeous building, but don't waste your money at the bar. :( read more

My earliest memories of the Bar at the Driskill are circa 2002...I was there on a late Saturday morning during football season. I just finished doing makeup for a bride and her wedding party. Having never perused the Driskill - I decided to walk around. Color me happy when I discovered the bar in all its Texas High Society decor (Longhorns...leather...rich wood...etc.) A few men were lounging around the bar watching a college football game, and I decided to order a bloody mary from the bartender who appeared to be veteran mixologist. MMMMMMMMmmmmmMMMMMmmmm.... I think that's actually the last bloody mary I've ordered at a bar in the state of Texas. I now only make them myself or SOMETIMES order the in bars when in Louisiana (even that's only been like 3 times). Still, to this day - one of the reasons I love this bar is they can make cocktails even better than I can. (I make some pretty tasty bloody marys and martinis myself!) A few years back, this became a staple spot for a nightcap after hitting the town. The air is relaxed, the crowd is mixed, the seating is comfortable, the restrooms are downright decadent, you can actually hear yourself and the conversation you're having, and there's just TEXAS SWAGGER in the air. After letting one of my little brothers in on this secret spot, he made it a regular stop on his college days' date nights (and received accolades). In the present day, the Driskill is still that spot. There seems to be a few more prospectors than before. I suppose that changes the dynamic some, but it's still oh so worth checking out. read more

Great atmosphere. Very relaxed place to have a drink and appetizers while listening to live music. We enjoyed the chips and queso. We also tried the jalapeño poppers... they weren't fried as I would typically expect and they were incredibly spicy... to the point of not being enjoyable. We came to the hotel bar on one of our business trips to Austin. The hotel bar was pretty old school and had mounted animal heads on the walls that my coworkers tried to ride on... yea you read that right... haha! We ended up having a drinking contest and someone from our crew puked all over their couch 5 minutes before they closed... which totally pissed off the waitress... oopsie... This place is simply beautiful. From the rich western art to the unbelievable architectural details of this historic building, you will be transported to another time. The drinks are fine, and the service is great, but you really come here to soak up the atmosphere - which is very very special. I've never tried anything on the bar menu, but I really need to because it looks fabulous. One thing worth noting, for Johnson-philes... LBJ proposed to Ladybird in this bar and for that, I always get a nice warm feeling. I imagine them both sitting here reminiscing about their lives, toasting to their kids and to Austin, hoping for a Democratic victory in November. This is just a review of the bar on the second floor... the atmosphere that should be kinda chill and swanky is ruined by the fact that there are a bunch of kids running around. Okay, fine, we're in a hotel, but I feel like when you're in a fancy place spending as much money as we did for a couple beers that we could at least get a little peace. Not so much. The bartender was friendly enough, and the decoration was okay... I didn't like the TVs all over the place. Only took me 2 years to finally make it to the Driskill, but man, was this a cool place. I had some family friends who were visiting Austin and staying at the Driskill and we decided to meet up in the bar for a few drinks. I got there a few minutes early to scope out the place and was pleasantly surprised how large the bar was. There was plenty of seating when I got there around 6 but I will say that it filled up soon after. They had a large drink menu and a decent size happy hour food menu which was great to see. I didn't get the chance to try any of them but I would like to come back and give it a shot. The waitress was incredibly nice and came back to the table multiple times to make sure we were squared away. My only negative for this place is I would not come here if you are handicapped or disabled. Not sure if that was on purpose or not but the only way to get to the bar on a wheel chair is to go up one elevator from the lobby, go across the hall, and then down a second elevator. I was on crutches so I opted to just jump one legged up the stairs but it won't be nearly has helpful for someone in a wheel chair. read more

You just have to try the Sunday brunch. Go. It's a Sunday morning and you've slept in and don't give a damn about football, getting up early or making breakfast, so whaddya do? You try the Driskill. The brunch is served in the upstairs bar (second floor up that beautiful stairway) not in the tea service on the main floor or the restaurant. The setting is sumptuous - lots of comfortable chairs and settees with appropriate side tables for your drinks and dishes - and the service what you'd expect in a first-rate destination. Live music on Sundays from 11-2 (I think) and the group we heard was good mixing in a few covers with some original work yet as befitting a brunch not so loud you couldn't talk with your friends. Food? Delicious. I had the prime rib (which covered the plate) while my date had some sort of lobster dish. Of course we trade bites and I though mine was better, but they were both outstanding. I believe Mimosas come with it, and coffee as well, but I just stayed with the java: I really don't need booze at lunchtime. The pricing seemed very fair at just under $40/person with one drink and tip included. This is the perfect brunch on a cold winter's day when you're looking for a way to ease into your Sunday and impress your date. Oh, and that football thing? They actually do have a projection screen and were showing games when we went. Thankfully, the screen is located where you can get a seat with a direct view, but there are plenty of other seating options available that don't involve looking at, or looking past, that screen. I love taking people to this bar that are from out of town. As soon as you walk into the bar you feel as if you've traveled back in town. The Driskill bar definitely has the old west look and feel. The bar is dimly lit with a larger square wooden bar and stools lining the perimeter. The martini's are usually really well made. On this particular visit I was a little disappointed with the drink that I ordered. I ordered an Old Fashion which at a place like the Driskill you would expect it to be outstanding. Not the case, it was way too sweet that added a ton of sugar and you could barely taste the bourbon. Also, they use Jim Beam I have never heard of Jim Beam being used in an old fashion. If you want an awesome laid back place to have a drink I would recommend this bar. Expect to pay more than average, but it's a really cool hotel and bar. There is a lot of history in the hotel. These guys are the epitome of a customer service-oriented place, and that alone is the basis for my 5-stars in this case. Visited with my girlfriend around 10pm: the place was happening and lots of people and energy, but there were still plenty of quiet, intimate spaces available. We took a VERY comfortable couch around the corner from the main action. But I reiterate, even at 10pm on the night before Thanksgiving, you could still find a few spots open. Just the right amount of seating! Our being out of the way probably made it a bit harder to get noticed by our server. My one comment to them would be to try not to forget the smaller parties sitting off to the side. But I take some responsibility in this case since we deliberately seated ourselves away from the bulk of people and probably disrupted her flow. When she arrived we ordered a latte and a crème brûlée. They turned out to be out of the latter, of which Bar Manager Richard Darr visited our table to inform us personally. He apologized and save us two Signature "D" Driskill Cupcakes at no charge. I normally do not like cupcakes, but if ever there were a cupcake to eat, it is this one. The whipped cream was amazing: definitely did not taste like that out-of-the-can stuff at all. I could be a fool who doesn't know his creams, but as fare as I'm concerned, that stuff was top notch! I also overheard something else from Richard while he was at another table that really impressed me. I heard him tell someone "Okay great, I just like to make sure, when something comes back like that, that it's because you were full and not because you were unhappy." So I guess he saw something mostly uneaten get taken out and took the time to go check with the customer and make sure everything was okay. In a world with so much crappy service out there, it's great to visit a place like the Driskill that really gets it right. One final note: the pricing is not outrageous. While certainly not cheap, it's right where it needs to be. $8-10 for a specialty cocktail at a nice place is pretty normal, and I'd have no problem paying $6-10 for a dessert in ambiance like this. Also, many of their snacks and appetizers are half-price during happy hour, taking some down to about $3. Very impressive, and I would love to visit during that time. For me, parking was not as much of a hassle as it has been for some others. I parked a few blocks away near 5th and Lavaca and you can generally find some meters out of working hours that are available. I'm not saying it's easy or will always happen, but don't assume that just because you're going to the Driskill you HAVE to pay $20-25 for parking. Yes, you can do so there safely and conveniently, but a little walk down 6th never killed anyone. read more

Went to have a drink at the iconic Driskill. 6 people, two had water. Service was painfully slow. Ordered drinks and food and had to give a credit card for a tab. Understandable as we've seen lots of dine and dash over the weekend. We flagged our waitress down any time we wanted something. She never came just to check. Someone in the group was waiting to ask for our check and I went to the restroom. Went to the restroom and there was toilet paper in the stalls, blood on the floor and a dirty panty liner in the floor. When I got back to the table, the waitress still had not come. She was drinking water and talking to another waitress near the cash register. Finally waved her over and asked for the check. She came with not the bill, but a credit card receipt charges to the card to hold the tab. She also charged 18% gratuity. She handed it over and walked away. Not impressed in the least. There's nothing I'm more passionate about than rum. The problem is, quality rum is often very hard to find as most bars only carry the basics. While on a trip to Austin I decided to go on the prowl for some high end rum. I went form place to place to no avail. Finally I came across the Driskill and stopped at what turned out to be an awesome bar and bar scene. The bar had an excellent quality rum selection, so i went to town on the good stuff. The waiters were awesome and I was really impressed by their knowledge of everything on the shelf. The bar had a country band playing live music which gave the place a semi lively feel without going overboard. It was just what I was looking for. This place is great and in my opinion the best bar in the 6th street area. Definitely a must. read more

Love this bar! We went here for happy hour before seeing a show at Esther's Follies. It is absolutely dripping with Texas Southern charm. Wood paneling, cow hide couches, marble floors, large columns in the hallway and paintings of bulls in ornate gold frames. Comfy couches and over sized chairs are scattered throughout and in little nooks with coffee tables. It feels more like you're drinking in a wealthy Texan's den than in a bar. My lemon drop martini was delicious. They also had a twangy, Western couple singing old style country. It's personally not my style of music, but it's absolutely perfect for the ambience. read more

We had a wonderful time here on NYE. There was live music, and plenty of space to sit and enjoy drinks and snacks. This bar is located inside the lobby of the Driskill Hotel which is gorgeous. We valeted, entered the lobby and we were greeted by a beautiful lobby and breathtaking Christmas tree in the center. The bar is quite large and has a variety of seating from couches, to tables to even a few seats directly at the bar. Our group seated ourselves near the band and enjoyed champagne and cocktails. Our server came by multiple times with water refills and they passed out noise makers and hats at midnight for the countdown. A quite enjoyable place. Would return if in the area again. read more

They have nightly happy hour from 4-7 where you can get half off special drinks and appetizers. It's a good deal. This lounge is big and beautiful. It's classy, upscale but not stuffy, and the perfect place to sit and relax with friends. I've been coming to this bar for years, at Christmastime. It's a tradition my girlfriends and I have. We have bubbles at the Driskill and then go see Love Actually at the Ritz. Normally, the service is good and the snacks are delicious and we have a great time. This year, the snacks were good and the service was meh and there were no bubbles of any kind to be had. You read that right. THEY WERE OUT OF CHAMPAGNE! They were also out of Prosecco and cava. How does a bar run out of these items at this time of year! The server was unsympathetic and we were disappointed. We decided to have beer and my friend asked for a stout, guess what! No stout beer of any kind. She had to settle for a Shiner. Not sure how stout isn't even an option here, but after that, we left and headed over to italic for $5 bubbles and delicious pizza. I'm so disappointed in you, Driskill. read more

Definitely a solid 4 in my book. This place has an incredible ambiance reminiscent of the "Old West" era. The bartenders definitely understand their drinks. In fact, they possess a lot of knowledge of not only the Driskill Hotel, but also the history of Texas. I was quite impressed with the information I was given every time I came to visit. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: This is NOT an entrance fee type of bar full of drunk ravers or blasting club music with smoke machines. This is a bar within a very nice hotel rich with history. The weekend nights might get a tiny bit crowded but during the lunch hour during the week, it's a cozy place to unwind. The Driskill Bar is awesome. Picture leather sofas, grand piano, dark rich wood interior - traditional elegance but Texas style (i.e. cacti). The bar menu has many premium options and don't forget to check out the cigar case. I always bring my cigar aficionado friends here. As with anything else, you get what you pay for. (Johnnie Walker Blue was $35, add the $75 cigar and you get the idea.) Sup classy times! Well you know, this is definitely one of those hotel bars with an air of extravagance. It has a ever-so-slight western down-to-earth fell because this is Texas, y'all and we like to keep it real, but it is quite snazzy nonetheless. During my academic tenure in Austin, I recall trouncing past the Driskill Hotel dozens of times. I would marvel at it a little, but I was always too meager to set foot in the historical hotel and oh yeah, I didn't drink back then so I really had no interest in bars anyway (I know, so why was I on 6th Street anyway? Beats me!). A visit a few months ago seemed to shed light on why this place is such an attraction. Driskill Bar kind of has that proper ladies and gentlemen kind of ambiance. Most of the patrons were dressed dressy casual, although there were a few t-shirts and jeans, this being a rollicking college town and all. It was fairly calm and civilized - swollen with a great deal of chatter, but no "Wooo hooo! I'm on 6th Street, I'm getting wasted, ahhh!" if you know what I mean? The drinks aren't super cheap, but they're competent. Definitely a nice little place if you want a break from the usual 6th Street rough and tumble. read more

What a fun bar/lounge area! Stopped by during happy hour- which was really busy. The place was packed! Its an older crowd- average age 40. There was live music and the cocktails were yummy. The service was somewhat slow but granted they were busy. Great- dimly lit decor and just a lively atmosphere. This bar is inside of such a cool, and historical looking hotel. read more
