As the names…read moresuggest, Average Joe's is a bunch of "locals" working out at a modest gym owned by a "local", and GloboGym is the national chain that attracts models, celebrities, and world-class athletes with its state-of-the-art equipment, spa services, and chic design. IAC is most definitely the Average Joe's of the Kent Island area. (Note: Club1 is the GloboGym equivalent.) The owner of IAC is a jovial ex-wrestler who will make you laugh with his gruff humor and make you cry with his years of experience with personal training (read: torture). The equipment is good, if not a little dated and worn, and kept clean. On staff are friendly, down-to-earth trainers who will help you get in shape and feel like a hero for doing so. And for you busy parents, there is a small daycare service to entertain the kids while you train. The rates are very fair, and plans range from long-term (6 months) to month-to-month. If you work in the Narrows (area in which IAC is situated) you get a discount. The gym shares full shower and locker room facilities with the neighboring pool. All facilities are always kept clean as a whistle. The IAC is a great way to support a local business and get in shape with your friends and neighbors. As someone who grew up in the area, it was refreshing to run into my teachers, friends, and other neighborhood types there. Contrast that with Club1, where I always caught myself thinking (during my one week trial), "Where do all these beautiful jerks come from?" Indeed, most at Club1 would likely say (to quote White Goodman from Dodgeball): "Here at (Club1) we're better than you, and we know it.." The Island Athletic Club may made of a bunch of average Joe's, but they're my average Joe's, and I'll work out there before anywhere else.

The business had stopped using latex balloons in their open gym area in place of latex balloons. We…read morehad expressed excitement of this fact due to our daughters severe latex allergy and how the balloons being gone made it safer for our daughter to play there. A staff member stated she had heard the same thing from other patrons and stated an intention to not start using the latex balloons again. We started frequenting their open gym more often because she could play there safely. In fact my daughter has been to 3 other birthday parties here this school year and there were no latex balloons. In fact at the last party, the owner even recalled my daughters name from memory. Due to how much my children love this establishment and how it was a safe environment, we planned a large joint birthday party for our daughter with her good friend. I was shocked to find my son playing with a few latex balloons about 30 minutes into the party. I then found other latex balloons scattered around the play area. I quickly picked them all up and asked a staff member to make them all disappear due to the severity of my daughters allergy. The staff member said she would but they remained where I put them for the rest of the party. I then noticed my daughter had two hives on her neck. I took her out if the gym area and immediately gave her Benadryl and got out her epi pens just in case. My daughter ended up with over 15 hives all over her body, was extremely emotional and didn't enjoy any part of the remainder of her birthday party (which she had been looking forward to for months). As the party was ending the owner of the establishment showed up. I told him what had happened and asked him why the balloons were suddenly back. The owner showed no concern at all for my daughters well being and claimed there was never a plan to stop using latex at the gym (though we had been to the gym for parties and open gym/free play since September 2016 and there have never been balloons present. He did not care that my daughter was having a severe allergic reaction and this special party was ruined for my daughter. When I expressed that he should stop using latex balloons, he made it clear that he had no intention to do so. Realize the balloons are one minor part of a large children's gym. When not using the latex balloons, they used beach balls which worked great. There is absolutely no need to have latex balloons present. The only thing I can think of is that the owner has switched back to balloons to save a few cents. I explained to the owner that we could not be customers at his establishment if he continued to use latex balloons and he had an "oh well" response. Since coming home we've had to continue to give our daughter medication to treat her allergic reaction as well as deal with a very emotional and quite sad 6 year old whose party she had been looking forward to for months was ruined. She felt so horrible she was unable to even eat her cake. For a place that is supposed to provide a safe environment for your children to explore, try new things and get out energy (by using the zip line, jumping in the foam block pit, climbing the inflatable wall, swinging on the large rope, etc), the owners clear lack of concern for my daughters health and well being makes me wonder how safe the other attractions are for all children. Safety does not seem to be anywhere near the owner and staffs main priority. If your child has allergies I would recommend staying away from BusyBodies. The owner clearly does not get the seriousness of allergies.

It's a small beach with a short shore and there is shallow water. I saw herons and folks using metal detectors. The sandy area had cool shells and some interesting bugs. I liked that there was a clean bathroom between the parking lot and the beach. There were picnic tables on the sand where we enjoyed snacks. They were shaded so it was nice. The bad: There are lots of jelly fish that can definitely sting so you basically cannot get into the water. No tents are allowed. The interesting: I saw lots of dogs here running around in the water. It looks very dog-friendly despite other reviews saying there are signs that don't allow dogs.

Quick note for potential beach goers: Only single-pole beach umbrellas are allowed on the beach. We…read morekind of learned the hard way that beach tents are not allowed. Originally, we were interested in Matapeake Beach because of the dog beach. However for our first visit (of hopefully many visits), we decided to leave the dog at home because it was super hot. But, I think in the future, we will take the dog if we can arrive to the beach around 8 am. The second reason we were interested in this beach: It is fairly close to Silver Spring, MD. With a departure of 9am, we arrived at the beach around 10 am on a summer weekday. For the most part, we did not experience too much traffic (on a weekday) in both directions Silver Spring-Matapeake-Silver Spring. Also, I think there were 1-2 tolls in each directions. Overall, I thought the beach/park was very clean and well-maintained. I'll note that there are not very many amenities (if any) on or near the beach the beach (e.g., food vendors), which necessarily was not a bad thing for me. Although parking is limited, it is free (a very pleasant surprise) as of June 2025. I'm not 100% sure, but I think there were like 50 (or less) parking spaces. Since we visited on a weekday, we did not have any trouble finding a spot in the parking lot. However, I can imagine that parking my be a bit of a nightmare on weekends and holidays. Also, the access to the beach was free (another pleasant surprise). The folks at the beach were pretty friendly and respectful of their surroundings -- for instance, I did not hear super loud music (just the soundtrack of waves, a few dogs barking, and a few kids playing); see people acting a plum fool; notice substantial litter (or other not so fun things) on the beach. Even though we were disappointed that we had to take down our beach tent, the park ranger was super nice about it. The water was a pretty smooth with little to no waves so it is nice for little humans and dogs. I think I had to walk about 0.25 miles to get to a point where the water was waist level to me, but that was a VERY minor inconvenience. Overall, I think this is a great beach for a quick day (or half a day) trip.

There's only ONE review for Camp Letts?? How can that be???…read more Okay, a little bit of background, here: I have been going to Camp Letts for over forty years (coincidentally, my age is a little over forty years). For once, I'm gonna have to write a relatively irony-free Yelp review. Letts is a YMCA mixed-use facility situated in a wooded peninsula, on the Rhode river (which feeds right into the Bay). That means you drive a mile and a half down a beautiful forest road to get there, and at the end you're surrounded on three sides by the tidewater shoreline of the Bay. Mixed-use means there's a variety of reasons you might show up there. Mostly, it's: - a summer camp. Woo hoo, summer camp! - a conference center (church/synagogue groups, and retreats for local businesses) - a special events venue (weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc.) - a family camp. They hold this every Memorial and Labor Day weekend. In my years there, I've experienced all of these facets of Camp: I went there as a summer camper, have been on a religious retreat there when I was a kid, saw my sister get Bat Mitzvahed there, and perhaps most importantly (for me), gone for family camp every year since I was a wee babe. It's great for all these events. Why five stars? Because there's something here for everybody. That means for every purpose you might need (Getting married? check. Sending a kid to summer camp? check), as well as the range of activities, and the range WITHIN those activities. For example, the waterfront is a big part of what make Camp great - but not everybody feels like sailing or water skiing. No problem - you can also just hop in a canoe, and paddle your way around the coves and islands of the river. The staff is professional, and they make sure you're experience is as good as possible. The food is taken care of by their excellent staff. Accommodations are mostly in cabins, which are relatively gussied-up (carpeting, bathrooms, and electricity); there is also the econolodge-like Letts Lodge, "rustic" cabins (no interior bathrooms or carpeting), and yurts. But really, I'm gonna push for Family Camp, here. Twice a year, you can get away for a weekend, to a place where - like Cheers - everybody knows your name. It's relaxing, there's all kinds of activities - from nature walks and tennis to sailing and archery. You can even just relax on a rocking chair overlooking the water and read or knit. I've been going here forever, and hope I'm always able to. I fly back east from California every year, just to grab a weekend here. It's a big part of growing up for me and for many others. You can't do better than going to Camp.

Camp Letts is a seriously gorgeous summer camp on a peninsula that juts out into the Chesapeake Bay…read moreand Rhode River. There is precious little on the internets about Camp Letts as a wedding venue, so I'm going to try and be comprehensive here. I got engaged around the same time as my brother - he's getting married at the Four Seasons. We chose Camp Letts, or "the Four Seasons of summer camps" as one guest called it. Availability - Because it is a functioning summer camp, there aren't too many summer Saturdays available for weddings (and Memorial and Labor Day weekends are booked for camp retreat events each year). I think they only did 14 total weddings all of last year. If you are doing a fall or spring wedding, you have a good shot at snagging a Saturday. We were lucky to get a June Saturday, right before the campers arrived. Staff - The original event planner was (thankfully) replaced by Trev Dalton, who was a dream to work with. He was a Grade-A professional, and responsive to all my e-mails and calls. And there were many. The camp is a camp before it is a wedding venue, and my folks wanted to do a lot of "sprucing up" around where the outdoor ceremony would be. The camp staff welcomed this, and the lawn and boathouse looked fantastic on the day. Everyone was very helpful on the day, and even provided a little golf cart to get some photos in some of the hidden gems of around the camp for pics. We could cruise around without wasting too much time/getting dirty/sweaty en route. Catering - If you book the camp for your wedding, you sign on to have Chef Betsy (the camp chef) make the food. I was scared about this because I was already in love with the venue when I learned about the exclusive catering, but she DELIVERED. We had crab cakes, prime rib, a summer veggie pasta, and some simple sides of roasted potatoes and roasted vegetables. I'm telling you as a crab cake snob, the crab cakes were to.die.for. Compliments from the guests abounded. Do not be afraid of the catering. Determine what you want and ask for a tasting. They try to combine tastings with other couples (again, it is a non-profit and not a typical wedding venue, so funds are limited for lots of tastings). Rentals - The catering at the camp only includes table set-up, food and bussing of tables, so you do have to rent linens, glassware, etc. A day-of wedding coordinator is pretty key, unless you have friends/family members that are game to set the tables and you want to put them to work. I'd recommend a coordinator that can make sure all of your gifts and items you own get into the right cars, so that all of your guests can enjoy drinking and dancing! Bartenders - You will have to hire a bartender(s) and get a one-day liquor license. You can order booze and have it delivered, and the bonus is that most liquor stores will take back any unopened bottles for a full refund. Grounds - So pretty so pretty! We had an outdoor ceremony on the water, flanked by trees and sailboats. The reception was in the dining hall, which is a lodge-type buidling with high rafters and a giant fireplace. We fit 200 guests with a dance floor. Another bride had a few more guests and did the dancefloor outside under a tent (another option). The boathouse is available to rent for an extra $500, and makes a decent place to get ready with your bmaids, though it isn't the most picturesque on the inside. We did our "first look" on the pier outside, and I can't wait to see those photos. Overall, the experience of having our wedding at Camp Letts was five stars. The look and feel of the wedding was the cheerful, natural, fun vibe that we hoped for because of the great venue. It was truly the best day of my life!
