This is a hidden gem in this small ranching town (pop 300) outside Cody, WY. We were headed home to Colorado from Yellowstone and decided to stop and eat lunch at whatever food and lodging off ramp that came up..voila! Meeteetse, Wy. We ordered 2 French dips and the cheesesteak sandwich...we knew we had stumbled on something wonderful when the waitress asked us, "how would you like your meat cooked?" What?! A French tip without shaved, pre roasted meat?!! The cheesesteak wasn't strips of London broil? Nope all the sandwiches were made with fresh, not frozen flat iron steaks. Cooked exactly as you order it... which is imipramine to me as I like my meat seared lightly. The chef/owner came out to make sure mine was acceptable considering the rules regarding rare orders... it was perfect. The family moved to meeteetse five years ago to be closer to their mother/mother-in-law and the wide open spaces..they saw the bar and its potential. The rest is history. The chef/owner is from Charleston, SC and knows how to blend flavors and plate pleasingly....AND it's only5 hours from colorado... we'll be back

My wife and I stopped here on our way back to Casper from Cody. My fishing guide recommended as the best food around and should not be missed. We were not disappointed. The Elkhorn cheese steak had chunks of delicious and tender steak along with peppers , onions and cheese. My wife's burger was done perfectly medium without her having to ask and it was the first time in years that she finished her meal. The service was excellent and our server Kelsey was very personable. Don't miss it if your on the area.

Like all the reviews say, definitely the place to stop whether you are just traveling through or your destination is Meeteetse. I ordered the wild burger (60% bison and 40% elk) medium rare and a side of onion rings, it came out medium, so it was a little dryer than I would have hoped and the side of onion rings was a pretty small portion, 2 or 3 more would have made a huge difference. (those two things are the reason why I dropped it a star) Besides that, the meat was a very high quality and tasted fresh. My father ordered the Elkhorn cheesesteak, medium rare, and man was that thing delicious! Amazing taste, very flavorful and hands down the best cheesesteak, him or myself have ever had. This place is a locals spot, but the staff makes you feel right at home, service was good, place was clean and had a cool vibe going with it. Overall, this place is a must stop. Definitely get the Elkhorn cheesesteak, it's absolutely amazing.

Ask the Community - The Elkhorn Bar

My grandfather Guy Curtis owned the Elkhorn bar in the 50's?

We have heard that is the case. Perhaps the Meeteetse Museum or town hall would have that sort of info on file to aid in research? Good luck!

I think this is a family-run establishment. I ordered my meal to go, and they gave me my drink and invited me to sit down and wait. I had checked out the menu beforehand, and I selected the Garbage Burger with fries. My food was ready quickly and delivered with a smile and friendly chat. This was a delicious burger! A thick beef patty was covered with onions, mushrooms, bacon, and melted American cheese. It also come with lettuce, tomato and thousand island dressing. The patty was huge and nicely seasoned with salt and pepper. The onions, mushrooms, bacon and cheese all melded deliciously together. The bun was sturdy and had been nicely toasted. The thousand island dressing added another layer of richness to this burger. Wow! A messy, but awesome burger! The fries were good, a nice side and had some good seasoning in the breading. This place is great! If you are looking for an excellent meal away from the busy downtown area of Cody, check this place out!

And we were THOSE people, unintentionally. We showed up 15min before the kitchen closed (not knowing there was or expecting there to be a kitchen) and 45min before the brewery itself closed. I can't lie, we've been crazy road-tripping it & we were, again, excited when they mentioned food. I'm not sure if the kitchen staff were as excited as us, but they didn't let on that we were putting them out, even with such a late order. We did try to be accommodating- I went so far as to say "give me anything you need to get rid of." Of course, the barkeep had already taken our orders by that point & I guess that was that. Chicken fried steak for me & a brisket wrap for the hubs - we could have (& probably should have) split either & would have had plenty to eat. We both took food with us to the hotel & we had leftovers for breakfast (2-fer). The food came up fast & the flavors were good. I appreciated the non-traditional take on the chicken fried steak. No country gravy here... she ate like schnitzel which went well with the beer! Speaking of, on to the reason for stopping, beer. Sage Creek IPA 3.75 Mountain Wheat IPA 4 Sand Coulee Red 4.25 Heart Mountain Hefe 3.75 Service couldn't be better. I can't stress enough how much I appreciate not being made to feel like I shouldn't be there- even being encouraged to enjoy both the food & beer, despite the late arrival. Kudos!

It was pretty good overall, but the service and lack of a starch option was not great. The bartender that night had an attitude until she didn't. This was 7/25/26. And not being able to get mashed or a baked potato with the hamburger because of a gluten allergy AND still paying $19.50 for a bunless hamburger was not quality service. Trying to tell us the same grease that cooks things with gluten, also cooking the fries would be hot enough to get rid of the gluten. Haha come on!

I was cheerfully and efficiently served by Tiffany who knew the menu and the drinks backwards and forwards. I ordered a bison burger and a side of wild rice. The stars of the day were the three local beers I tried: wheat beer, a double IPA, and a Baltic porter. All three hit the spot.
