We had our own private space, with everything we could need (including an amazing bathroom), but also had opportunity to meet with other guests which made the stay even more memorable. The homemade jams/syrup were amazing! Peter's world famous waffles were indeed delightful! Deborah was so easy to talk to and I appreciated her making me feel comfortable while visiting my sister. Andrea, the proprietor, keeps the carriage house and the grounds to the property very tastefully appointed. While the carriage house is located right in the heart of this small, college-friendly city, Howard St. is a very quiet residental venue and is situated in a very nice part of town. The location was actually very convenient. Just about a mile from the heart of the little bustling down-town area, the mile long walk each waty was a great way to get exercise and to experience the sights on foot. The carriage/guest house itself is very clean, neat, orderly and comfortably decorated. To our delight, we even found fresh milk and OJ in the mini-fridge, which was very thoughtful. A cupboard also offers complimentary fresh cereals, teas, hot chocolate and coffee for use by any guest. There were PLENTY of freshly laundered linens available, also. The ONLY amenity which could use a little upgrading (but its not a big deal) is the television (old tube style) and the VCR would be better replaced by a modern DVD player. (VHS- what's that?) Free Wi-Fi is supplied by the proprietor, which is a very convenient amenity by today's standards. We will definitely be back for a second visit!

The upstairs studio, where we stayed, can accomodate up to four people (2 on bed, one on additional bed, and one on the couch). It is definitely a good share, or for a couple away from home. *Btw, beware of the toilet bowl... it did clog up.

I stayed with my family and I was hoping for two queen beds, but they only had a king and sofa bed available. The sofa bed wasn't the comfiest, but it was better than the floor. My check-in time had change and I completely forgot to call in and my no show during the first night caused my reservation to be cancelled. I was stressing out, worried about not having a hotel for my family, but thankfully there was one room available still. I was not aware that my reservation would be cancelled for showing up to my listed time late. A warning, email or call would have been appreciated before cancelling it immediately. Asides from that hiccup, the rest of my stay was smooth and pleasant.

This place has great potential, but right now it feels like it's trying to be something it's not. It markets itself as a spa and a "culinary experience" (given its history as a former culinary school), but neither really delivers. The hotel itself feels dated and a bit cheap. The carpet tiles throughout give it a very worn, patchwork feel, and the rooms just aren't comfortable. My bed was honestly one of the most uncomfortable I've experienced in a hotel, and the pillows weren't much better. The rooms were also noisy, which didn't help the overall stay. (I will say--the sheets were surprisingly soft, one of the few highlights.) As for the "culinary experience"--the food was fine, better than average, but nowhere near what you'd expect from a place branding itself that way. Hanging photos of vegetables everywhere doesn't make it a culinary destination. That said, with the right investment, this could be a beautiful property again. The setting and bones are there--it just needs serious attention and upgrades. I wouldn't choose to stay here again unless I had to, but the wedding itself was fantastic.

We were placed at…read morethe end of a hallway where outside doors slammed all night, the room was dirty, small to the point where you almost tripped over the bed to enter the room and the heating system was noisy. We asked to change rooms, but the hotel was sold out. After we returned home, the manager kindly reached out and offered two complimentary nights, which we appreciated. I've stayed at the Essex for years and have always loved the rooms, spa, and restaurants--especially the comfortable beds (which are no longer there)--so we returned this past weekend hoping for a better stay. Unfortunately, from the moment check-in began, things went downhill. We were unable to check in online despite multiple attempts during our four-hour drive. We were assigned room 303, which was quieter and more spacious, but it came with many issues. Both outlets by the bed were broken, our shower never got hot despite running it for an extended time, and we found trash left in the room along with several ladybugs and spiders. Maintenance came and said the shower eventually reached temperature, but it never felt warm enough for a comfortable shower. They also said the outlets wouldn't be fixed until after we checked out. My husband spoke with the front desk the next morning, but nothing was addressed when we returned that evening, and there was no offer to move our room. We were told that because our stay was complimentary, nothing could be done--though the only reason it was free was because of our previous bad experience. We weren't looking for compensation, just a comfortable stay: working outlets, a hot shower, and a chance to relax. Even a simple room change would have made a big difference. We also chose not to dine at the restaurants this time, as our last visit showed a decline in food quality and fewer vegan/vegetarian options than before. This was once my favorite place to stay in Vermont, and I recommended it often. Sadly, after two disappointing visits, it's clear the Essex needs significant improvements to return to what it once was.

Check-in was seamless & very personable - I rang a bell in the lobby & someone (Paige, I think?) appeared in seconds. My room was ready before their stated 4 PM check-in time, so I was allowed to settle in early. I stayed in the Half Pigeon room (all of the rooms are named & have very different vibes) which was very black & white & abstract. The common areas are designed to perfection. The solarium?! Maybe my favorite room I've ever stepped into in the entire universe. There are multiple fireplaces throughout the first floor. There is a small fridge for guest-use in the bar area, as well as an ice freezer. Snacks in a snack cabinet up for grabs. Breakfast was incredible. A full spread of fruits, yogurt, housemade bread (& gluten-free bread by request), flourless quiche bites, & more. Delicious, fresh-brewed coffee & all sorts of milks to choose from. On day two, they did breakfast to-order rather than a buffet. I assume to reduce food waste. I filled out a card with my desired breakfast order & what time I'd like to eat. It appeared on a tray in the dining room exactly when I requested. This hotel is SO worth the little splurge. I'm already daydreaming about planning a trip back to Burlington to stay here again. There are a few rooms on the main level, including a sun-drenched living room where you can read a book, play games, or visit with those you love. The food and beverage are one step ahead of you with a station for tea, another area with snacks and fresh baked cookies, a coffee bar, and sparkling and fresh water on tap. I love having sparkling water on tap! The vibe is welcoming. The continental breakfast is phenomenal with really beautiful Vermont products and keeps it light with fresh breads and fruits. Try the granola. The staff are beyond amazing and really made our experience incredible! They are available and help to meet any requests. They also know a ton about Burlington so really great resource. The staff are friendly and kind. I ordered a cheese board ahead of time and really recommend it because the presentation is beautiful and a great treat to have. I stayed here with my 11 year old son and felt like it was a great choice for us. (I think it's not a hotel for really young kids, also most rooms you access by stairs so something to consider.) We stayed in the room called "Mini Bar." WOW what an incredible room. It's a king suite with a separate living room and huge king bedroom. The living room has a lovely small fireplace. The bathroom is tiny and tucked away, with steps between it and the bedroom, but that's some of the character of a building built in the 1800's. I think they did a phenomenal job updating parts of the inn to make it functional and modern, while keeping with the original charm. Full disclosure, it's an old inn so you might hear other guests as with most bed and breakfasts. If you are sound sensitive it might not be your spot. We found it incredibly relaxing and just an amazing experience. I'm already planning my next trip back!
