Came for cocktails and appetizers and loved them. Great porch and upstairs with a good late night vibe. The home is welcoming and has a sophisticated yet comfortable vibe. My boy friend had an old fashion which he loved and I had a crisp glass of rosé. We shared the small charcuterie board. It had a great mix of cheeses and spreads and was plenty big for the two of us. Would recommend sharing with another couple. All the cheeses were delicious and each was different from the other. Will be going back to this restaurant for dinner soon. Second time at Expat and I don't think I'll be back. It was just ok. Charcuterie was, again, ok, and seemed to lack overall vision. Somehow I keep getting the same lackluster waiter. He doesn't seems to want to help or be there when we need him. Entrees, ok. Mussels, good. Cocktails, good. Dessert, ok. Last night we were outside browsing at the menu and watching the chef create some beautiful desserts. The owner, Jerry, came out to greet and chat with us some. This morning we decided to try the brunch menu- mostly because of Jerry's friendly demeanor. We were pleasantly surprised to find everything looking clean and beautiful since the new owners. Our menu requests were cordially agreed-upon, by our friendly and helpful waiter Tim. The food was delicious! The crepe was perfect, as were the eggs Benedict. Coffee- Thousand Faces- excellent! Beautiful brand new restaurant in 5 points! The menu is fresh, using local ingredients, and the cocktail menu is extensive, with something for everyone! I got the duck and a French 75. The duck had delicious flavor and didn't taste greasy or gamey at all. My drink was perfect and pretty with a twirl of lemon rind. I also had a glass of wine and it was awesome! I've been to The Expat twice now, and it's one of my new favorite restaurants in Athens. It feels fancy but casual enough that I didn't mind hanging around. The service has been attentive and friendly - once I was in a large group, and they seemed fine with it. The cocktails were real standouts and heavy on the booze. I think the menu changes often, but I thought the duck was really great. The large cheese/meat plate is worth it if you have a large group, and I think the mushroom toast is exceptional. Update: at least for brunch portions have improved. Husband and I returned a few weeks ago and we enjoyed a much more filling brunch. I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars and would have given them a 3.5 if I could. What saves this new place is the gorgeous renovation (a former student and current resident, I too mourned two story, but that building needed some love) and the amazing cocktail menu. Well crafted drinks and a creative and expansive menu makes their bar competitive with any upscale placein town. Service was friendly, if needing some polishing but had promise. Like other reviewers said the servings are almost laughably small. When we went here for brunch, my quiche was delicious but I think I got four mouthfuls of food. Granted, they do a neat little prix fixed brunch that is fun and a worthwhile idea. They were generous with the lack luster pastries. Maybe comerian? Maybe Sysco? Anything that seemed to come from their kitchen was kind of ridiculously small. Good flavor on the quiche , the panna cotta has too much gelatin and not enough flavor. Both would have been the perfect serving for an American girl doll. There is lots of potential here and I hope they make it work! read more

I loved the menu and was excited to try this place. For the prices and selections, I expected better service. Our waitress was sweet, but not very nuanced in fine dining. My entree needed salt. My daughter's $22 pasta would not have been a decent meal had she not added shrimp. Overall, I expected this meal to be a fun experience, but we paid $161 for mediocre food and service. I went to The ExPat with my sister one weekend. She decided that she wanted to check this place out because it took reservations (and she was coming to town on a Saturday night). The atmosphere reminds me of a French bistro. It seemed like a mashup between French and American food, like having escargot and a burger as an option. I would only recommend going for special occasions. This is not a place to have dinner every night. It is rather expensive. I paid around 18 dollars for a vegetarian dish that was quite small (and definitely more appropriate for a special occasion). The service was fine. The bar upstairs was nice, but had few drink options. I would only come back for a birthday or a graduation celebration. Also there is parking, which is a plus, because I usually don't find a lot of parking spots in the 5 points area! read more

The ExPat is a fantastic place to eat! I highly recommend it! The food is really tasty, satisfying and they have a one page menu, not a big book like a lot of restaurants. I think I've tried a lot on the menu (which changes every season) and the Rabbit Ragout is my personal favourite. Oh, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert is to die for! Damn, I want one now! Their menu of beers, wines and cocktails has its own menu page! If you're an IPA connoisseur, I guaranty your fancy will be tickled, so to speak. The staff are very friendly, professional and courteous, which is a definite plus. Being an Ex Pat myself I highly recommend the ExPat! Go on, spoil yourself! read more

If you ask me, this place is over rated. 4 of us went there for dinner and out of the 4, 3 of our meals were over cooked. We asked for medium rare and we got medium well, at best! Beyond the over cooked meats, the food was ok. The waitress was very good and very sweet. Went to The Expat with a group of 11 exchange students who wanted to experience an upscale Athens restaurant and they all seemed to enjoy what the ordered. I personally had the steak which was perfectly cooked and although the portion was large, the meat was far too savoury to leave on the plate unfinished. They provided a candle for one of the students as it was their birthday just the day prior. I'm glad we made a reservation because by 7:30, the entire place was packed. We had an excellent meal here . The service was attentive but not overwhelming or annoying. The menu isn't huge but It also wasn't your typical offering for the area. Husband and I both had the strip steak, which was probably the best steak I've had in Athens this year. The seared tuna was delicious as a starter (the olive oil and flake salt took it over the top) as was the local lettuces salad. If I could think of a negative it's that the dining room was loud, which is a minor issue but definitely not a deal breaker. We will definitely be back. read more

The people dining on both sides of us also appeared to be unhappy with their food. The service was slow and inattentive. My drink orders were forgotten a few times. 2.5 hours and $175 in, we went afterwards next door to Donna Chang's because I was still hungry and wanted to eat something tasty. The homemade pasta w/ sapello island clams, bacon & fried kale was spot on. We did not care for the burger but it was removed from our bill. Bar program is solid. I am especially impressed w/ the staff's knowledge of food/wine & ability to check in when appropriate - not interrupting a conversation, like other places. This is my new go to for every occasion. Fine dining in Five Points! The service is warm and enthusiastic, cocktails are made with love, and food is very good. Unfortunately, the portion sizes tend towards the smaller end, particularly of the appetizer breads. A bartender also accidentally ruined my date and friend's shirts via an exploding pomegranate-something container. No hard feelings (it was hilarious), but a free drink or something would have been nice. Overall, a great experience, and I'm happy to have them in the neighborhood. read more

If you're visiting Athens, GA and want a more sophisticated dining experience than your typical college town fare, this restaurant is worth considering. We came for lunch and had the freshest, lightest hummus served with delicious fennel infused crackers followed with a grilled ham and Greyere cheese sandwich topped with a perfectly cooked sunny side up egg and fresh green salad. The Bloody Mary was the perfect cocktail for a pregame meal. The restaurant is in an old house with windows made with handmade glass from a bygone era. The feel is of a simple European farmhouse. Food was good, although be ready to freeze while you eat. They are following protocols for COVID but the room we were in, which is the only one for dine in, was freezing. Nice ambiance and very good service, but on the pricey side and VERY loud to the point that the 4 of us could barely hear each other. The restaurant needs to add rugs or sound absorbers. I wanted to love this place and was excited to see a new local spot open up. However that excitement quickly turned to disappointment. We decided to start with a few small plates. The first (smoked fish), was so tiny and had little to no flavor. It was as if they ran out of the ingredients and put the last remaining tidbits on a plate. It was supposed to have caviar on top...it didn't. Then the cheese plate came out and it was ice cold. We sent it back and the bartender told us she didn't blame us...she agreed it was bad. Not a good start. We split a veggie sandwich which was just ok. At this point we decided to finish our drinks and just skip the food. We ended up going next door to eat after. I will say the upstairs bar is quite cozy and the drinks are good. read more

The building is beautifully renovated, but that's about the only thing positive we experienced. We, along with some friends, were placed at a high top in the back room. The other option we were given was to sit outside in the rain. ??? The high top chairs had no backs, the room was filled with a large party that was so incredibly loud, we couldn't hear ourselves. The menu is very limited and the portions are laughably small. Like, very small. I got the pasta and it was a big mouthful of fishy-ness. Nicely al dente pasta, but the flavor made it inedible. We had to show our server how to open a bottle of wine... it was apparent that this wait staff was inexperienced in other ways too. I do have to note that the cheese board was nice. Panna cotta has way too much gelatin in it, it was terrible. We won't be back until another concept takes over this space. read more

Excellent service. Unique menu. Amazing food. I've been waiting for a restaurant like this for a long time in Athens that has a more upscale menu, yet friendly, not snobby waitstaff. I went for lunch - and I imagine it's the same menu at dinner. Just really excellent food. Reminds me of some restaurants that are in downtown Atlanta. Yes, it's a little expensive but just for Athens not for anywhere else in the country. The wine list is excellent as well. It's so refreshing to go to a restaurant in this town where they have created an original menu, they have friendly servers, great atmosphere, and they have an excellent chef.
