Happened across Fat Friars Meadery on our way to Augusta. We'll, its a little scary at first but we are so glad we stopped. The meades were awesome and our chat with the Brewmeister was educational. Complex flavors in cohesive chords. I am told this is achieved with a lower temperature process and judicious use of ingredients in small batches. Well, they are accomplishing something amazing--each of the half dozen or so meads and variants I tasted were absolutely unique and fascinating so it is challenging to pick out the one that I liked most. The show mead had interesting wild honey floral notes and a semi sweet finish. Cherry melomel was flirty and fruity with a bit of cherry and very easy to quaff. The hopped mead had a fascinating tarragon note. The Viking whey and honey mead was nutty and milky with lots of tang--the story is awesome. Lemon Ginger mead was bright, spicy and fun. The Maid Maya is cinammon and clove mead tasted of pumpkin spice fun with some orange bridging. The capsumel was fiery as the oils collected on your throat--it creeps up on you! Wow, what a fantastic experience my wife and I had visiting the Fat Friar Mead. To be perfectly honest we were a skeptical upon arrival when we pulled the car up to the front of a house. We were a bit early and were greeted quickly by the owner who politely asked us if we were here for a tasting. We were graciously pointed toward the tasting area. After a few minutes we were welcomed in to a charming tasting room where the mead choices were located. My wife and I tried all 5 samples and all were excellent. Sorry. I can't remember the names of them, however I do remember the highlights. The first one we sampled was a delight. Remembering it was a simple mead and water creation. The one my wife and I adored was The Maid Maya which is the one we purchased. The one that we sampled last was cery interesting as it was made with chili peppers and had a kicking finish. So, if you are heading to the Rockland area be sure to visit the Fat Friars Mean winery. I know I'll be back! read more

I feel obligated to write a speedy review for this place since it has none so here goes.... I had never heard of the Fat Friar's Meadery until last week. We took some friends to visit Maine Meadworks and while there I noticed a poster called The ME Wine Trail- it listed vineyards, wineries and meaderies in Maine. Perfect since I was just Googling for said info last week! We decided to stop by Fat Friar's on our way home from Acadia. We took some crazy back roads and truth be told I was feeling a bit ill upon arrival. Speaking of arrival..... -the meadery and tasting room are in the brewer's home! Seriously. Don't be alarmed. (I was a bit shocked by this personally.) -After following the hand painted signs we ended up in the "tasting room" aka the brewer/owner's basement. We were greeted by the owner and master brewer himself, Sean! He was very friendly and happy to see us and launched straight into the tasting. -The tasting room was under construction which was a bummer, but clearly a coincidence. I was distracted by the very strong paint smells but I plowed ahead. I came this far, right? -Sean walked us through the mead tasting. He was very knowledgable and answered all our questions including mine "can you tell us how exactly mead is made?". He was passionate, humble, and made mead-making sound easy! -the tasting was FREE! We tried about 6 or 7 different types of mead. They included: Traditional semi-dry, Lemon ginger, Hot pepper, Cherry and my fav- Maya which had cloves and cinnamon. Sadly there was only one bottle left of this and our friends snagged it. I have to be completely honest and say I did not love the mead. I'd say it's more traditional compared to say Maine Meadworks (MM) which was more my style BUT my 3 companions all really enjoyed it and most of them preferred it to MM! Sean and his wife kindly let us use their bathroom (in their house) and we got to meet their sweet dog and kitty. So bonus points for that! Note that Fat Friar's is down the street from Oxbox so I'd suggest hitting both up. All in all a very personal and unique experience with quality mead- check it out! :-) read more

What a fun experience! Sean is a wealth of information about mead and the history behind honey wine. His enthusiasm keeps the tasting room, which is decked out in medieval style, an entertaining and engaging environment even when multiple groups are visiting. Also, the mead is great, we went home with 4 bottles and I highly recommend the Maid Maya. read more

We went here on a Saturday in April. It was around 230 and the son was there to give us a tasting. For anyone looking for the hours (at the moment their site is down) it sounds like they are open after 430. I think in the summer they have longer hours. There is a sign on the road to get to their house which is at the end of the road. When you get there go to the back, there is a gravel path, and enter in the basement. The tasting room had just finished being painted and it looked really nice. Sam (the son) showed us the area where they make the mead and let us taste everything that was available. We had lemon ginger, maid maya, cherry and their chili mead. We ended up buying bottles of everything except the chili which was good but we had to stop somewhere! It was a nice tasting and Sam talked about how the Fat Friar got started and why he chose mead. He also gave us a little history on mead. Definitely worth the trip! read more
