The Fig Cooking School is a gorgeous space to take a cooking class. The space is bright with plenty of space for a group of roughly 15 people. The owner, is very passionate about offering these classes; however, the class missed the mark. I will preface our review by saying it may have been an off night based on the many other positive reviews. Unfortunately, the class was flawed in its design and execution. The first hour of the course is spent standing listening - not about the food our technique but about the instructors backstory/introductions of other students. While this is a necessary step of any good class, it should not have taken nearly an hour. By the time the recipes were went through, many of the people were already disengaged. We have attended several other cooking classes, the design is typically setup in stations where everyone works in small groups to create a portion of the meal and learn a specific skill. Depending on the complexity of the techniques you will have the opportunity to rotate through some of the stations. The Fig is setup differently: all ~20 people work together through every step of the meal. On paper that sounds like a great concept; however, it lead to a class that was not very engaging or hands on. Throughout the entire four hours I completed the following steps of the recipes: chopped one button mushroom, chopped a handful of porcini mushrooms, stirred some cake batter, filled a tart shell, salted a steak, flipped a steak. The instructor shared a few basic pieces of instruction. For a very beginner cook learning how to whisk or chop a shallot would be interesting. For a more intermediate home cook the emulsification process was explained. I was hoping that the class would be more technique driven as opposed to following a series of basic steps. The biggest reason for the poor review was the execution of the food. The class was expensive and dragged on way longer than expected (which would have been great if it was engaging). The instructor did not seem familiar with the recipes and was often reading directly from the packet. The assistant instructor was often issuing corrections/reminders. See below the components we put together: Mushroom Tarts - were delicious, would have been better hot but it is difficult to time something like that. Mixed Greens Salad - a good simple salad, also delicious. Pepper Crusted Steak - The steaks were not cooked evenly (which would have been a good technique to teach). The pieces we were served were completely grey with no sign of pink or moisture. Others did have nice medium pieces. On our pieces the seasoning was scorched and extremely bitter leaving an acrid aftertaste. Chocolate Red Wine Cake - was completely overcooked, the cake was supposed to be dense like a flourless chocolate cake. Instead it was dry, crumbled to the touch and flavorless. The glaze was tasty but the cake was not properly executed. Unfortunately, when the class ended we went to go find a place to eat. Hopefully, this feedback can be taken as constructive. We never like leaving negative reviews of a local business. These classes are expensive at nearly $300 a couple our expectations were significantly higher. read more

This isn't the cooking class you think it is. If you've never taken a cooking class, you might enjoy it but if you're expecting this to be something you do with your group while drinking wine and having fun, this isn't that. The format is essentially the owner makes the meal and everyone takes turns doing menial tasks such as grating cheese, stirring the pot, mixing dressing, cutting garlic. This isn't for socializing and if you talk too much she will aggressively ring a bell at you and essentially tell you to shut up. Every cooking class allows BYOB, except here where you have to buy wine at restaurant prices and you're not allowed to have it until the food is served. The price of the class ($300+ depending on the class) far exceeds the value, we had two pasta dishes and a salad - most of which was cooked or prepared by the assistants. I've taken cooking classes in the city (from actual chefs) which were far less expensive, way more interesting and much more enjoyable. If you are new to cooking and don't know how to measure a tablespoon or how to cut an onion, go for it. read more

We hosted a party here. It was tons of fun. We all learned some very useful cooking tips, participated in the prep/cooking, and had the opportunity to chat during the lesson part. That is, it was just the right balance of doing (chopping, stirring, measuring, mixing, etc) and watching. The space is very elegant and Heide is a dynamic teacher. At the end, we were served the final product at sit-down tables. Also, the wine selection was superb. Thanks to Heide, we were able to put on a fantastic dinner party -- but without any prep and mess. What could be better! read more

I took my first Fig Cooking School class last evening ! I would highly recommend these classes! Heidi is the owner and she had great energy, was very informative and instructional while allowing us students to be hands on and learn. This is a great night out. The crowd was friendly and diverse and we met many new faces. The food was excellent! After collective efforts making the meal we all sat down and ate it together and enjoyed conversations with new people. I was amazed how far some travelled to participate in the class! Yikes. I purchased this for my now husband for our dating anniversary back in September. About a week before the class I uploaded our Vax cards as requested and received an auto reply confirmation of receipt. I uploaded them as 1 PDF. The morning of the class, I was bcc'd on an email reminding everyone to upload the Vax cards. Twenty minutes later I receive a text  from Heidi telling me that they did not receive mine and my husband's Vax cards. Shortly thereafter I received a text telling me they only got one of our Vax cards. I responded that I uploaded them as one PDF and sent them again to her via text. This should have been an indicator of the chaos that was going to ensue. Upon arrival we entered into the "cooking school" and were told to get aprons and stand in front of our station. We started off all giving our names, what we do, and our favorite food. I thought this part was fun, but it took about 30 minutes to get through everyone. Reminder - the class started at 6:30.  The class then began. We were directed to our printouts of the recipes. I can't even explain what happened from there. We jumped around to different dishes throughout the class which is fine, but the instructions were lacking unless you were directly in front of or next to the stove. Further, Heidi would just tell you what to do like chop mushrooms or peel garlic. I was told to grate horseradish and when I asked which side of the grater to use, she said "the fine one". We are supposed to be at a cooking class. Instead of showing me which one to use, I had to guess. Ultimately, she was wrong as the fine side did not grate the size we needed for the dish. She attempted to give my husband constructive criticism on how to chop something, but she just said "you're doing it wrong". YIKES. This also happened when one of the fellow attendees was salting & peppering a tenderloin and flipped it over. She rushed over and said "WHAT ARE YOU DOING". Honestly Heidi, we would be doing the right thing had your instructions been clear. About an hour into the class, Heidi's helper said that there was water for us to have. I cannot believe this took an hour to communicate. But this was ONLY communicated to my husband because we happened to be close to her helper. We were forced to wear masks and were not provided any options for beverages or snacks during the class. The snacks part she made clear on the website, but failing to communicate until an hour in that there's water is shocking. The entire thing felt disorganized & I wouldn't call it much of a class. At one point, the fridge was opened and my husband and I noticed that it was beyond disorganized and when they went to pull out the sour cream, they had to check the expiration date on it and drain some water from it.  Heidi was unable to find multiple cooking utensils in order to execute the dishes in a timely fashion. In my opinion, cooks & instructors are supposed to be familiar with their kitchens to effectively execute everything. Throughout the "class", Heidi did remember everyone's names, which I thought was nice, but at one point she was picking on one of the attendees - it was supposed to be cute, but she didn't know this person at all and I found it extremely off-putting since there was no prior rapport established. Finally, at about 9:15 we were done cooking. She took everyone's wine order and we sat down. Everyone was given their wine except my husband and me. I went up to remind her and she did get it for me quickly. It took them approximately 30 minutes to plate everyone's meal. She didn't explain how to plate, how to cut the tenderloin, or anything really. We were STARVING. The class started at 6:30 and ended at 10:30 p.m. The website does tell you to have a hearty snack, but a little more transparency would be appreciated. If this class was available at 5:00 p.m. and had fewer people, it would run so much more effectively and efficiently. The price of the 3 courses was $135.00 p/p and the wine we had was $35.  I unfortunately will have to say that the experience was absolutely not worth the price and the food could have been purchased and made at home.  Oh, and instead of offering anyone seconds, she took the entire leftovers home. It was really a sight to be seen. My advice is to find a fun cooking class on youtube and buy the ingredients, unless you actually enjoy watching chaos & being staving. read more

This was the most unprofessional and disorganized cooking class i've ever been to. Complete chaos, she snaps at guests, requires you to get a rapid test EVEN if vaccinated, and not to mention the food came out horrible after 3.5 hours of waiting around. It's a communal cooking class meaning you don't get to make your own meal, everyone's just standing around trying to figure out what to do next. Heidi doesn't even know what she's doing! Terrible direction and literally scolded me in front of other people attending as if I was a child for putting 2 ingredients in the same bowl. Snaps at her daughter as well (who works there) and the food was really bad after spending that entire time starving. Plus she tries to plug other classes that she offers as much as she can. Then on top of the hefty fee to attend this useless class, you have the option to buy alcohol with your meal and charges NYC prices for crappy drinks. Complete sh*t show this class was, I left there wishing I could get my money back and STARVING from not eating that inedible food. Please spend your money elsewhere where you'll actually be cooking a meal yourself and not having the instructor do everything while you just measure things out. Waste of time and money. All of these other reviews are opinions of people who clearly don't have good taste in not only food but leadership as well. We have been attending classes at Fig for over a year now, and the experience gets better each time. Delicious food, great recipes to take home and the most wonderful people! This is no your typical cooking class where you are divided in small groups and have a part of the meal to complete. This is an immersive experience where you are part of every step of the process. Some steps it's simple as cutting or chopping, others you are stirring or observing. Yes there is a bit of organized chaos, but don't for a minute think that Heidi and Jessica are not at the helm, guiding, imparting techniques with the most wonderful goal of each class- sitting down and having a meal prepared with great care, love and laughter!! Not only was the meal we prepared fun to make and delicious, but we learned some tricks of the trade and got to spend time with a great group of people. We had an absolutely amazing night cooking - learning handy recipes and techniques as well as some more elaborate dishes for special occasions. And, the dinner at the end was absolutely scrumptious. It was amazing because when we arrived at the Fig School, we were surrounded by strangers, but by the time we sat down to enjoy our meal, it felt like an intimate dinner with our closest friends. During the meal Heidi, the owner who is an absolute delight, goes around the room and asks each participant what their favorite part of the night was and you struggle to pick just one thing. This is overdue but something i keep meaning to review. This was the most disorganized, overpriced, un-engaging, disappointing evening. I wanted to love it and had been looking forward trying it and supporting this business, but alas. My husband purchased the pricey night out for my bday (with 2 drinks a piece, totaled over $300) and we couldn't have been more unimpressed. From forgetting to preheat ovens, forgetting to set timers, only having one cooking utensil per group of 6, lecturing us on knife safety then not noticing when she knocked the knife block to the floor while flustering around, forgetting to prep key ingredients then making us wait for them... well you get the idea. The "cooking school" part involved teaching us how to use a measuring cup, mince garlic and assemble packages in premade pastry crust. The instructor likewise kept referring to her printed directions throughout the night--which in all honesty, I could have done the same meal at home following the same directions for a lot less money. Side note: Now, I'm all about a bargain, but all our cooking products were clearly marked Trader Joe's--a store I love and don't mind she used, but better served for a $70 per head price point, not $125! ) The instructor barked at us when we engaged convo with our fellow attendees and seemed rattled and irritated throughout the night. Meal times were very late (probably bc they forgot to turn on the ovens and prep ingredients) and we were not allowed to have a cocktail til about 10pm. And the drinks! The instructors daughter poured them one at a time, so by the time I got my drink, my husbands was gone. She also weighed them on a kitchen scale because God forbid they pour one penny over. It came off so stingy and cheap--either learn the pour mark (like any fine food establishment would) or take that behind the scenes. One other thing: the beginning of the evening began with an introduction of her daughter (who was very nice but kept telling us how much she needed a vacation) and a shameless plug of her daughter's budding graphic design business. Listen, I work in advertising and I'm a mom. I get it. But we are paying for a premium service and this was an inappropriate grab of a captive audience that paid a lot of money for a sub par experience. In the end? Meal was good. Nothing I couldn't have done at home with the printed directions the instructor used. Learned no techniques and felt like we were duped. Attendees were visibly bored, condescended too, and the overall energy went downhill over the evening. Glad we didn't drive far like many of the others in the class. read more

Overall we had a great time at the Fig Cooking School. Heidi really took the time to get us all acquainted and get to know us personally. She does warn you to have a hearty snack beforehand, which I would strongly recommend. In fact, we felt like we needed a small meal beforehand because we didn't eat until 9:45pm. It would've been nice if the class started a couple of hours earlier as we were all ravenous by the time we ate and there were no snacks offered. While this cooking class may not be as hands-on as we would've liked (mostly just prep work), Heidi does a good job of talking you through everything and we felt like we learned a lot. The meal tasted great and we learned to cook with a lot of new and interesting ingredients! However, we were told we were going to receive an email with the recipes after the class ended, but sadly that did not happen. Still, it was a fun way to spend a Saturday night! read more

We attended brunch their first day of offering it. The lavender chocolate chips pancakes and cast iron shakshuka were both delicious, especially the pancakes! We also had french press coffee that you pressed yourself (pretty easy and fun to do, honestly, and good coffee). The staff and owners were especially nice; the space is also very bright and cheery; Most of the available seating encourages you to interact with other guests as it's mostly larger group tables or bar seating with just a few smaller tables available. I attended a team building event with my husband for a professional organization that he belongs to. Spouses were included for this fun evening at Fig. From the moment we arrived to this beautiful and inviting space Heidi and Gabriella made us feel welcome and relaxed. We prepared a delicious salmon fillet, kale salad and observed the preparation of creme brûlée. Lots of helpful hints and tricks of the trade were shared. Mouths were watering as we prepared our perfect dinner party menu. By the time we had our glass of wine and sat down to enjoy this feast the 14 of us were fast friends with delightful conversation! I have attended many cooking classes in the past couple of years and this class was the best. The quality of the ingredients (organic) was top notch. We did a French dinner which you would eat in the Burgundy region of France; it started with Gougeres, then Coq au Vin served with a salad and Pear Clafoutis for dessert. Chef Heide explained everything which made it informative and fun. She also allowed you to participate as much as you wanted and everyone in the class did something. Beautiful cooking school with out of the box classes! My husband and I got to take the Persian cooking class titled, "Spice Market," and it was delicious. We met wonderful people who attended the course with us and got to cook together like one big family. The setup was different than another course we took in Italy, where there were people split into groups, but it worked out well for such a complicated meal. Once everything got started the owner Heide made sure to include everyone throughout the evening. We had a ton of fun and we definitely would like to return for more courses! read more

Beouf Bourguignon + Haricots Verts + Mixed Greens with roasted grapes + Lavender Creme Brulee There were 10 people in the class and we collectively prepared a meal that we ate together. Everyone pitched in at different points in the cooking process. I thought it was great that she had the completed dish ready before-hand because the Beouf Bourguignon is better served the next day. FIG Coking School and soon to be Sunday brunch and eatery has arrived to Walnut Beach in Milford and I am overwhelmed with enthusiasm!! I attended a cooking class a couple of months ago with my sister and brother and law and it was a fantastic experience in every respect. Heide is obviously a Master chef with a vast knowledge and passion for cuisine from around the globe. She imparts her knowledge in a very down to earth and joyful manner, one which leaves the students excited to know and experience more. Heide's daughter and assistant Gabrielle is sparkling with enthusiasm, friendliness, wit and knowledge...as a team they are wonderful. The food all of us helped her prepare was absolutely delicious and inventive. My wife and I were also fortunate to attend a sneak preview of their Sunday brunch menu the other day and it was fantastic to say the least!! One would have to travel to the finest restaurants in NYC, France or other world capitols to experience cuisine at this level. Wow! I hired The Fig Cooking School to help with a team building event for 12 people. The event took place at my house and it was such a great night! We had so much fun learning about the ingredients and the different dishes we were preparing -- and the food was amazing! But beyond that, Heide Lang created a wonderful experience where we were encouraged to work together and to have fun preparing the dishes. And by the time we sat down to eat the meal we had helped to prepare, we were all relaxed and open and had a wonderful time as colleagues and friends. In addition to the actual event being fun, I enjoyed the time I spent working with Heide on planning the menu and the details related to the event. Additionally, she brought along 2 of her colleagues to help with prepping and clean up. The night ran smoothly and there was no mess for me to clean up at the end! The team building event by The Fig Cooking School was a wonderful experience! I am hoping to make it regular experience. A very disappointing experience. Too much "chat" and not enough hands-on cooking instruction or experience. It went on far beyond its scheduled finishing time and most folks had traveled a fair distance to get there and had lost interest (and their appetites) by the time the food was actually served. We held an amazing team building/holiday event on 1/8/19 for 20 people. It could not have been a better experience. Heidi is the owner and was our host for the evening. She was upbeat, patient, informative and had the uncanny ability to remember each of our names. She made sure to accommodate those on a Keto diet as well as anyone with food allergies. The evening was filled with conversation, laughs and we all learned a little something. Oh goodness, where to start?! A VERY expensive ($125) evening for a VERY simple meal that could have been bought at a restaurant for less than half the price or prepared in my own kitchen in less than half the time. This is advertised as a "cooking school". The only way the participants were involved was to cut tomatoes, peel garlic, or measure ingredients--I'm an experienced cook, but am pretty sure that just about everyone has the skill of cutting and measuring using the correct measuring tools. This was the extent of the participation. The rest of the night consisted of watching perhaps the most disorganized woman on the planet fumbling around looking for cooking tools or ingredients, and asking her daughter where things were while ordering her to do just about everything. Finally, everyone in the class was so bored because the "instructor" was so unable to engage her audience, the entire class was just milling around chatting and rolling their eyes--half the class went outside! The highlight of the night was when the fire department came after the cooking set off the fire alarm, which continued to alarm as the fumbling around in the kitchen continued. When we were finally able to eat (at 9:45pm!), dinner consisted of an underwhelming ribeye, boiled green beans and a baked tomato that was cold. Forgot to mention that we all noticed that the owner was using her hand to wipe beneath her nose while cooking as well as dropped a towel she was actively using on the floor several times, just to pick it up and use it again. Never noted her washing her hands. Doing a little math, there were 22 people in the class. At $125 a head, that's $2,700--a pretty hefty price for any meal, nonetheless one that is advertised as a class but is really a disorganized excuse for a waste of both money and time. The class was great fun. Very casual and hands on with some interesting recipes. Some of us participated more than others, but that was fine. I guess heide doesn't do too well with big groups. Everyone else's review said they had a blast but it was with 2 or 3 people. I was with a group of 11 people and we barely did anything. She had everything prepared and measured out and she did almost all the cooking. I think I got to pour brown sugar into a bowl and that was it. Don't get me wrong the food was delicious but we didn't get to take our leftover home. For the amount of money we spent I was for sure we would take the leftovers home since there was a lot left! What a fun night out for my husband and me, and The Fig School far exceeded our expectations!! Heide and Gabrielle were amazing as our hosts, our leaders, organizers, teachers and more! We cooked 3 different kinds of pasta, learned things we never knew about cooking, made a delicious salad with a homemade dressing, and put together a delicious and fresh summer dessert. While chopping, measuring etc, Heide works on getting to know all of us, learned all of our names and by the time we sat down to enjoy our meal, we were all fast friends! Names & numbers were exchanged, conversation flowed and we all enjoyed a delicious meal. We are excited to go back for another diner theme. Highly recommend! read more

Moral of the story is don't miss your class for ANY reason, because they are soulless here. My brother and I got our parents a gift card here, and they were excited to go. My mom ended up having her appendix burst and has been in the hospital for 2 weeks due to complications. They refused to allow them to reschedule insisting that they couldn't fill the spot. My brother ended up taking my parents spot and what does the place say when the class starts... THAT THEY SQUEEZED ANOTHER COUPLE INTO THE CLASS. So calling out their BS story there. Recommend finding a different place, or ensuring you won't miss the class for any reason because they will not work with you. read more
