Why would I go to an Irish pub in Italy? Well, my husband just wanted a glass of Guinness and it seems like everyone else did too because this spot was packed. There was also live music playing, so it really drew a crowd in here. We ended up sitting outside since it was too loud and hot inside. We had some beer and drinks, which was standard. I was a bit turned off by the waiter who asked for a tip when we paid. When we said we'd give a certain amount, he re-asked with a higher amount which felt manipulative. read more

We were seated right away, as a large party, which we thought bode well for the evening. We were wrong. When the waiter came to take our order, he was clearly in a rush and said so. They were busy, but no more so than we would expect at late dinnertime. First he told us "no substitutions," as they were too busy for that. I was only trying to specific the type of rum in my drink. So when I asked what kind it came with, he asked what type I would like. Face palm. When the drink came, I think the bar tender thought about rum when making the drink but did not pour nearly a standard amount. Then the four of us ordered nachos, while waiting on the rest of our party. As we were ordering, we were told to hurry up, as he was very busy. Then the nachos, which were mediocre at best, came with no utensils and 2 only napkins for the four of us. I had asked when we sat if it would be possible to change the TV that was right beside us to a different sport, one that was already playing on screens in another room. Maybe later, too busy. Never happened. Finally, when the rest of our party joined us, we flagged down a different waiter to take our order. He was wonderful but dissuaded us from several of our first entree ideas. I thought I wanted pizza; he shook his head. Well, how about the cannelloni; again said he would not recommend. So fish and chips it was, which was not what I really wanted that night. It was fine but not special. 6 out of 10. But when our original waiter brought the food, I asked for malt vinegar for the fish and chips. Not available, only balsamic. What? Our friend ordered the lasagna, which was also not his first choice, after the second waiter talked him out of his first three choices. It looked like Stouffers, and he said it tasted about like that. The lasagna was served with only a spoon. When our friend asked for utensils, that was a clear annoyance to waiter #1, who was still very busy and reluctantly brought enough for utensils for the whole table. Finally at the end of this torture, our waiter brought the bill and told us that tips for good service were not included. He practically followed us to the front to pay to see how we would tip. Now, I am a very good tipper, as I have family in the service industry. I love rewarding good service. But this was anything but that. There is no chance I would go back here. The food wait staff was rude, and the food was middle-of-the-road. The only positive is that we had great conversation with our friends and a story to tell. "No substitutions." read more

This place is LEGIT! Was looking for a place to go and grab a bite and something to drink but everything around me was just like everything else. Almost wound up going to a little takeaway place, getting a slice and going back to my room but decided to look up Irish pubs near me and OH MAN and I glad I did! The service was top notch. The vibe was a whole vibe! They had a pianist who played a whole range of songs and sang great up-tempo renditions of them all. Stumbled across this Irish pub on our first trip to Rome and so glad we did! We stopped for a quick snack before our busy schedule and they had the friendliest and most welcoming staff! Christian suggested their famous cappuccino and a slice of their tart. He wasn't wrong when he said it's "one of the best". The place is welcoming, clean, and every nook and cranny has something quirky and fun to see. I wished we were hungry enough for a meal. We will definitely come back here again when we return! Great outdoor seating on the sidewalk with enough space between the tables and the road. It can get loud at night, music from inside, from across the street, and from traffic, but it's bearable and you can still have a conversation. Service was good, the people were very friendly and funny. The Guinness were very cold. We shared fish and chips, chips were homemade and thin and delicious. The fish was tasty and the breading good BUT it was 2 pieces of fish and if they gave me 50 grams of actual meat I would be surprised. So for 16 Euros it was unbelievable. Irish pub in Rome, Italy? Yes. Great beer selection. Live music wasn't Irish but "B Flat" was excellent and quality entertainment. Here was the rub however; there's nothing more frustrating in a restaurant than ordering food and having people seated after and being served their meals long before you. In fact we needed to ask our servers twice where the meals were. Many of us (8) work in the bar/restaurant business in the US and when there is a major mishap like this...something is comped. It took a long discussion with the manager for him to forgive €8 from an 8 top bill. The food that was finally delivered was fine but the disinterest was mind boggling. Perhaps they figured that we are tourists and won't be back but we're in Rome for 4 nights and Flann is a short walk to our hotel. We would've patronized them every night but we definitely won't be back. It was a shame, really. A more sincere mea culpa would have made everything right but they didn't know how to do that. At the end of April we stopped here for a beverage as we had a little time before train departure. My fave, who is a sucker for an Irish Pub, was pretty happy with the beer selection. Our friends both got Irish coffees and I stuck with espresso. It was a gloriously warm, sunny Spring day and we elected to sit outdoors on the side street, away from the pedestrian traffic. We made sure our personal belongings were out of reach of anyone walking by on the street or sidewalk skilled in the arts of theft. (Just a word to the wise, this IS Rome after all!) Our table was right on the edge of the curb, not against the building so it was a pretty open area for 'easy pickins' if you're not paying attention! We were approached by a couple of hawkers, one was pretty persistent, but after saying 'no thank you' a number of times, we ignored him (he made noises with the wooden bowl he was trying to sell us) while we continued our conversation and he eventually got the message. The restaurant itself was mostly empty. One waitress was working when we arrived. She was very nice and spoke English quite well. She took our order and it arrived in good time. We didn't see her for a while, but there were several outdoor tables occupied on Via Nazionale to keep her busy. At one point another waitress showed up and they kept an eye on us together. The Irish Coffee was quite tasty with heavy cream and a sprinkle of cocoa on top. As mentioned, the beer was enjoyed and my coffee was pretty standard. We seemed to pick a good time to visit, between lunch and dinner. The waitress told us breakfast can be ordered at any time and the kitchen was open even though it was not during a 'regular' meal service. This is pretty unusual for an Italian restaurant, but common in the 'tourist' areas and there are several hotels on Via Nationale. Perhaps visiting between meal times equals a better experience for food service. They do have a website, but it does not include a menu. read more

This is not an Irish bar!!! Please do not fall for this trap!!!! There are other good actual Irish bars in Rome that you will not get SICK from (go to Scholar) We walked in, asked for still water and was given a chipped glass bottle with things floating around in it. They clearly just filled up a bottle from the tap. We asked that they bring us sealed sodas instead. Ordered a chicken sandwich, chicken Caesar salad and sweet potato fries. Sweet potato fries were the only edible thing we ate because how could you mess that up. The chicken on both of our dishes was slimey and was either raw or rotten. My husband ate his food to be polite but went home and immediately threw up the entire meal. I did not eat my salad, except for a few bites. The server looked at me and asked with an attitude: "what was wrong with the salad?!?" I said it was not good, it's not for me. He looked at me, rolled his eyes and took the plate and walked away. Never apologized or offered an alternative meal or comp on the bill. We decided to just pay the bill in full and walked out as quickly as possible. read more

This is a pretty cool place! Wild, happening place at night. Live music and a pretty good menu. Drinks are pretty good too. We shared a pizza and had dessert. The down side is the service. The first night we tolerated it. We ended up asking another server to help us, as ours disappeared! The new server was very nice and helpful. We foolishly decided to go back the next evening. We couldn't even get a server to look at us after we were seated. I tried going to the host to get help and I was invisible there as well. We packed up and left. Throughout my three-day stay in Rome, I came here twice. Not because it was good but simply because it was convenient. It's located right down the street from the M Gallery hotel, where I was staying. The first time, we came for breakfast. And being the typical Americans we are, the 'full American breakfast' sign definitely lured us in. I ordered (what else?!) the bacon!! Italian bacon tastes way different than American bacon - the taste, the texture, everything. I wasn't a fan. Maybe because it wasn't as fatty as the bacon I'm used to? Couldn't quite put my finger on it. The second time, my friend and I came to grab a drink - and that's when the place was poppin. We were lucky to even nab a table for two, even though the place is huge. It was so big that it was almost like a maze to get to the bathroom downstairs. Not going to lie, I almost got lost getting back to the table (twice). It's definitely a touristy place. In fact, I don't even remember seeing any non-tourists in there. So if you're from the states and you're feeling homesick, Flann O'Brien is pretty much like the Irish pubs back home (except it's 10x the size). read more

We were here on our honeymoon and we really wanted to see my Dallas Cowboys play the W.Redskins while we were there. We were told by everyone near and far to see American football here. WE show up and they are playing the Chargers and Chiefs. (what the hell?? ) dont they know its america's team that's playing right now?? nope guess not. so we asked the bartender at the very back of the restaurant at the 2nd bar:if he could change just one of the tv's to the Cowboys game... NOPE! I was so disapointed and i felt so helpless. My team is playing.. you have the nfl ticket or something that let's you see these american football games and you are refusing to change even one of the 100's of tvs in there to my game. Oh i was so sick about it. and as a side note: he mad me a delicious screw driver with Absolute Vodka. YUM! Oh how I wish he could have helped us bc that was good. But no, he wouldnt change any of the 100 tvs in the ENTIRE BAR/restaurant to the cowboys game so we left. We weren't about to go very far since we had a big day the next day going to Ostia Antica. Fell in love with this place, yes it's loud yes they have live music and yes their food is fantastic. The staff is incredibly accommodating making a special brochette for us. If you like ravioli try the spinach with butter it is amazing. And the gentleman that greets you at the corner has a wonderful personality. Stumbled here on our first night in Rome. We ordered some very basic dishes (2 spaghetti with tomato sauce and gnocchi with truffle sauce) and now that I've been here for a few days realize it was pretty expensive compared to other place we went. The service was very good and the house wine was actually not a bad price. Overall, food was fine. My husband went there a second night by himself and ordered a burger - which he said he didn't like (we're from the midwest though, so we are pretty spoiled when it comes to beef). We didn't enjoy the bar area, but it looks like it's quite a popular spot for that. If you're just wanting to relax and people watch and have a beer and maybe watch a game, this place seems pretty lively. I would say, overall it's okay. On our last night in Rome we needed something not pizza or pasta. This was close to where we were staying and was in our Rick Steves book. I needed a burger. It was 10.5oz., cooked to order and better than I was expecting. Good and juicy with cheese and bacon that was actually crispy. My wife had a great grilled pork chop. And the kids had grilled chicken which was the best the had in the 8 days of traveling. The fries were standard issue frozen fries. The Harp was cold and perfect. Overall it was a good break from pasta etc. although the menu has pizza and pasta. The pizza looked pretty good. Do not eat here. This was the worst meal I have ever had. I ordered a sandwich and it was inedible. They somehow screwed up a pizza in Italy. How do you do that? Are you even Italian? This was by far the best casual dinner place to hang out family tried while in Rome. Seems like open all the time. Servers super friendly. Food is basic and awesome.
