Amazing place. One of few that lives up to the expectations. Food was spectacular. Some of the best seafood I've had anywhere in the northeast. Quality is superb and the dish ideas and presentation are supreme. Desserts are claimed to be made in-house and very much taste like it. Service is okay. We went to the location not on the waterfront tonight. They said there would be a 30 minutes wait. So, we had a drink at the bar. They seated us right beside our bar seat (30 minutes later at a table that was never occupied). No one approached us for over an hour. When we said we were leaving because no one spoke to us, the person who made us our drinks argued with me and said she did not know where we went. We went 3 feet from where she served us drinks. Others nearby were served. I asked a waitress who was nearby about a server and she said she would find out who had our table. A few minutes later we saw three servers arguing about who had to serve us. After 30 more minutes we left. I wish we hadn't stopped to pay. It was $43. No tip. No way. Also the sangria sucked. Stay away!!! And what they can do is care and be kind. Also I would give zero stars but I can't so I will give it one star because Nathan MacDonald was singing and he was amazing. We had some good food at the freight shed, but also had our order come out wrong. The wait took a while, and in the end, we weren't sure it was worth it. I ordered the seafood fettuccine with no peppers, but it came with peppers anyway. The waiter remembered putting the order in without peppers, but the kitchen had messed up. They remade it, but when it came back out it had a very different presentation and seemed smaller. It no longer was served with bread, and it had less seafood. It was just odd. I had to sit there while the rest of my party had their food, just waiting for a long time. But the remade version did taste better, so I appreciated it. With the mixup, we found it very strange that the waiter did not apologize or offer to discount the meal or make it up in any way. The prices for the crab cakes also seemed very high! Compared to the other things we got, we were quite surprised with the small serving for the price. It was served with a smaller version of the house salad that I ordered as a side. The salad was good, but not worth the price, especially as the only thing paired with the crab cakes. Overall, I'd skip going here again. Beautiful spot with view of the water. Everything we had was delicious, the beer was cold, and the service was good. We had the lobster roll, raw oysters, haddock, and the salad. I'm really sorry, but the only good thing I can write about this restaurant is, it has a wonderful view of the Baddeck Bay. Truly disappointed with the quality of food. Moreover, it's priced quite high compared to other restaurants. Quality vs serving size vs price barely makes 2 star as rating. We had Crab cakes, which can be better described as oatmeal cookie... dry, flavourless, blunt and costs $42 (or $45 maybe) for 3 pieces!! Had lobster roll, it's way smaller than other restaurants, and interestingly found that there is only a small portion of lobster meat there, which is nicely decorated on top of the lettuce filled roll. Service was below average as well. Nevertheless, at least we enjoyed the sunshine and the view of the bay as we were seated outside on the pier. read more

We went to dinner just around 6PM on a Wednesday in early August. Despite a crowd in front of us we did get seated immediately as we were okay with the first available table. This ended up being inside at a table the seemed to be shoehorned near the far end of the bar and it turned out to be unfortunate for us. First strike of the night, while we got seated quickly with menus, it took about 5-minutes for a server to show up and only after someone bussing tables noticed and got the attention of a server for us. We ordered the Crab Cakes and Lobster Roll as they looked promising and relatively quick to prepare. Wrong. Second strike, 20-25 minutes after ordering (we did get our drinks) our server comes by and says they're working on your food and then she departs. 10-minutes after that (total 30+ minutes after ordering) I track her down and ask if there's a problem. She says, again, they're working on your order now. (I wonder so what were they doing 10-minutes ago?) I tell her this is unacceptable and go back to my table to fume further. A little while later our server comes by to apologize and mentions that the kitchen is slow tonight. She expands and says that some people didn't show up for work tonight and they're backed up. (I wonder, so the restaurant management knew they were short handed and decided to download the problem onto their customers. Instead of closing off a section, they decided to fill the restaurant and let more people deal with long waits for their meals. There's no difference in the number of meals the kitchen can prepare, we'll just let our diners wait.) I'm also unimpressed that the apologizing was left to the server and no manager came by. Third strike. The meals finally arrive, I expect the kitchen was harangued at by our server. While the salad was good, the Crab Cakes were small and lacking flavour except for being over salty. They were never worth $35 for two and neither was a Lobster Roll worth $36. I didn't stiff our server on a tip, she's not responsible for the kitchen plus she had the guts to come over to apologize, but neither was the tip overly generous. There are other places to dine in Baddeck, I suggest checking them out. For example we had an ala carte whole Lobster dinner for $42 at a place just down the street. We won't be back. read more

I'd like to thank the food gods for the Freight Shed. We were in Baddeck for the shoulder season when a bunch of places were closed, so we had 2 meals at the Shed - breakfast and dinner - and enjoyed both of them. For breakfast, we got: - Blueberry Coconut Pancakes: It's a Freight Shed signature dish, and that makes perfect sense. Three huge and fluffy pancakes which have hints of coconut in the batter and a super generous heaping of blueberries in it. Got it with side sausage, and this was a definite winner. - Salmon Eggs Benny: Would have liked more salmon (yes I'm greedy) but otherwise, solid poach on the egg, solid toast on the benny, solid home fries. For dinner we got: - Seafood Chowder: Another signature dish that, while good, wasn't outstanding. Good amount of seafood in it, though would have liked a thicker soup. - Mussels for Two: Really generous heaping. Mussels were fresh and cooked well (not rubbery), broth was standard white wine and garlic. - Halibut: Special for the day, this was pricey for the small portion of halibut. That said, the panko crust on it was really flavourful. - Carrot Cake: I loved it (moist, decadent, whole lotta cream), though my wife found it too sweet. Service is really friendly and efficient, with the people there (from kitchen to servers) having such a welcoming aura. It's also by the waterfront so you have a great view while you dine. So whatever the season may be, Freight Shed definitely delivers. read more

The restaurant itself is pleasant and has a great feel to it, very nice view of the water. The service was awesome considering how busy it was and our large party size. The food was mixed among our party. I had the reuben sandwich, which while good was noticeably too heavy on the spice seasoning as it became too much near the end. Fries were good but very skimpy amount for what you're paying. Multiple people in my group who had the fish said it was over cooked. 2/5. Hopefully we just caught the kitchen on an off day, but at the price we paid it's underwhelming. read more

This review is for the Freight Shed Waterside Bistro, on the pier in Baddeck. There is another Freight Shed location right around the corner on Water Street. First of all, this location has to be one of the best for a restaurant in Baddeck. It sits right on the initial part of the main pier overlooking Baddeck Harbor and the Kidston Lighthouse. If the weather is nice, it is definitely worth the wait to get a table outside. Our meal was so good here on our first stop, we came back the very next day for a late lunch. The entire wait staff here went above and beyond in every way imaginable. Our waitress, who served us on both of our visits, was as good as it gets. She provided us with information on dishes, and gave us fantastic recommendations. We're very definitely beer snobs, and we really want to get good local craft beers at a restaurant like this. The Freight Shed did not disappoint in the draft selection, and they had a wide range of mixed drinks. The wine list looked nice, too. We tried several of the appetizer items you'll find on the menu's "THE FIRST CAST" section. The shrimp cocktail was amazing, with one of the very best house-made cocktail sauces we've had. After we devoured the perfectly cooked shrimp, I was forced to finish off the tangy horseradish-laden sauce at the bottom of the dish with my spoon. Definitely worth it. I also ordered the "Lonely Local Scallops" dish in the appetizers, and they were some of the best I've had. Cooked to be so tender, which can be hard to do. These were laid on an amazing citrus cream sauce, which was a perfect pairing for the fresh scallops. My wife also got a cup of the signature seafood chowder. We should have gone with the bowl. Seafood chowders can be so different and unique from place to place in the Canadian Maritimes, and this one did not disappoint. It was more on the brothy side, rather than a big chunky stew. The broth was infused with sherry, and all of the fresh seafood was perfectly cooked. During our two visits here in two days, we also both had the salads. I'd say that the Shed Caesar was one of the best I had on this entire trip through Nova Scotia. The one thing we regretted after leaving Baddeck was not trying the mussels here. We watched a couple of orders come to tables around us, and they just looked as good as it gets for local mussels. Maybe next time. If we're back in the Baddeck area again, this is the first restaurant we will return to. read more

My best friend and I ate at The Freight Shed Terrace location on July 15, 2024. It was far too hot and sticky to cook at home, so we struck out from Belle Cote to have dinner. Each place we tried was closed, and as our third unsuccessful attempt had us (relatively) close to Baddeck, we headed to town. My friend had eaten here with a group luncheon and raved about the food. As I have food issues, I checked out the menu, knew I could eat safely there, so that's where we went. It was quite full, but most of the tables appeared to be in mid-service. I will preface the later part of my comments by saying that the food was fantastic. We split an order of onion rings. There was enough for two. As described, they were thick and crunchy. The accompanying dip was both sweet and a bit spicy - yum! My friend had the quinoa rainbow salad with chicken. It arrived without the chicken, but a quick save by Bernice, our wonderful server, meant chicken arrived without being asked for. I was debating among three choices. Based on Bernice's recommendation, I opted for the chicken Alfredo. It was piping hot, and without question, the pasta meal was one of the BEST I have ever had. I would like to say that the other elements of our evening were just as great. Alas, that is not possible. We were seated, with menus, almost immediately. More than 30 minutes later, we had glasses of water, but had not yet ordered. After ordering both the appetizer and mains, it took another half hour for the appetizer to arrive. We had been there for a full hour before being served any food. At that time, I asked Bernice if it was always so slow. She explained that two staff members had ended up in hospital and that they were very short staffed. She apologized and said our mains would be 'right out' as she had heard the kitchen staff talking about them. It was more than a half hour for our mains to finally be served, during which time she brought us each a second can of pop without us asking for it. I want to make it clear that our server was fantastic. None of the situation was her fault. She apologized, again, as she was clearing the table. We repeated that it was not her fault, but it would have been helpful for us to have been told when being seated that they were short-staffed and that there might be a wait. She told us she didn't even know at first. I said while we understood, I was upset that a few tables who arrived long after we did had ordered and had their mains before we did. She acknowledged that should not have happened. When she returned with the bills, she again apologized, saying she would be back shortly. I was shocked to see that there had been no adjustment to the bill. It took the better part of two and a half hours for us to have a dinner that consisted of a deep fried appetizer, a salad, and a pasta dish. It was standard fare, nothing fussy or challenging. I asked about the lack of adjustment given the situation. Bernice explained that was why she had brought us each the second can of pop. I asked why the management hadn't taken something off the bill such as the appetizer or given some kind of deduction. We were told, "They don't do that here." I was flabbergasted. I ended the evening by telling her that, again, if we had been told about the wait, it would have been nice and would have allowed us to make an informed decision. The food was fabulous. However, the total time to have dinner was not acceptable, and for the management/owner to not do anything to acknowledge or apologize for the experience was a guaranteed way to make sure I would never come back. read more

If I could give this place more stars I would! Freight shed broke my cardinal rule of never eating at the same place while on vacation. This place was so good we came back the next night. It is located right on the water so the view is great. The first night Kaylee was our waitress and she selected the perfect beer for me. The seafood linguini and lemon haddock were delicious!! The side of veggies were so fresh and yummy. The second night was pretty packed but we were seated in a reasonable amount of time at the bar. We had a great view of the open kitchen and I felt like I was watching an Oscar winning movie as the team orchestrated themselves around the small kitchen. Our waitress was Breagha and she was fantastic!!! Such a pleasant person. Even though the place was packed we were served by her immediately. **This review has no reflection on the wait staff who were super nice.** We visited here from Portland, Oregon in the states. We have been traveling for two weeks through Cape Breton. This is FAR and AWAY the worst food and cocktail we've encountered. We've enjoyed all of our food until this "restaurant ." Please, if you are here during lunch time, go to the bakery down the street, which is what we had to do after we left because we were still hungry. 1) We ordered mussels for 2. They were so overcooked they were rubbery and the size of a pinto bean. They were $18.95. They came with a hard roll to dip in the flavorless, almost non-existent broth. 2) We ordered the organic green salad for $16.95. Shame on them. They took a handful of greens, a couple of tablespoons of cranberries and nuts and a dressing that was so sweet it was like putting frosting on your salad. 3). My husband ordered a Whiskey Sour cocktail. Classic. You can't f*!k it up. There are a million recipes on the web. Somehow, they managed to make the drink undrinkable--he had to return it. It was 1/2 simple syrup, made with lime (not lemon) juice that tasted artificial, and was so overpowering you couldn't taste any whiskey. Normally, restaurants on the water are not known for their good food. This place is an exception. The scallops were superb. And the crab cakes (because we went there 2 nights in a row) were almost as good. Both were served with delicious vegetables, a rarity in my experience, at restaurants. Try the Gin Smash cocktail, too. They don't take reservations, but you can wait in comfortable chairs and gaze at the harbor. The wait staff is all friendly and competent. A cute little venue nestled right up against the dock, just off the main road in Baddeck. Be aware, the venue is small, so keep that in mind when deciding to go for lunch or dinner. The kitchen takes up a good portion of the room, which limits the venue to ten or fifteen tables, plus seats at the bar around the kitchen. Personally, I love bar seats like this because I love to watch the kitchen staff at work. Menu is decent sized, lots of Big Spruce on tap, good wine selection. Good start! Servers are incredibly friendly, including Jenna, our waitress, so even better! For our meal, we ordered the mussels to start, and a lobster roll and burger for dinner.
