Been here twice. Never again. Yesterday was my second and last visit. I went to the counter with prepared salads and other items. I noticed that the workers who were scooping out the food into containers and then handing them to customers were not wearing gloves. Thus, I went to another section where some of those same prepared dishes were already in containers and were marked for sale. I bought a small container of Thai noodle salad. Had it for my dinner. That's it. Nothing else. I was sick within a couple of hours, all night, and into this morning. Perhaps the non-glove-wearing workers filled these containers and/or perhaps those workers hadn't properly washed their hands after using the restroom...or engaged in some other unhygienic activities. All I know for sure is that I will not patronize this establishment again. In addition, I noticed that the young ladies behind the counter appeared to be less than interested in serving their customers, whose patronage helps pay their salary--for example, I noticed several on their phones, causing customers to have to call out to them, asking if the workers could please help them. I observed that the workers then gave the customers a look of aggravation, as in "Fine! I'll stop what I'm doing and help you!" I was willing to pay a higher price for what I thought was a higher quality level of service and food. I was wrong. Give me Wal-Mart or Rouse's or the newer flagship Piggly Wiggly in Mobile any day, instead of "Fresh" Market (I use quotation marks because the food isn't fresh!). read more

This is practically the only store we have locally that offers products that most modern home-cooks use but are still hard to find in our area. Or they WERE. We were lucky to have gotten a Whole Foods in the area. Shoppers want options other than the same limited selections we find at every grocery store. Between WF and TFM, we had access to broader varieties of produce, cuts of meat, deli items, and packaged ingredients that we have to search out for cooking the modern recipes that circulate on the blog posts and social media. We aren't all still locked into cooking meatloaf, canned green beans, and boxed Mac n cheese anymore. We lost the Whole Foods, I presume due to the economy, so there went my boneless short rib meat I use for hamburger blends, hard to find produce like romanesco, delicata squash, zucchini blossoms, rainbow cauliflower, etc, my smoked salts, the full line of Organic Valley dairy products, and pantry items no one else has. I stopped in at Fresh Market yesterday. It's a long drive for me from home so it's been a while since I've been in and I was shocked. There's basically nothing there that I can't get from any other grocery store. The meat counter is still has a good selection, even when compared to the specialty meat market just down the street, but the deli meats were sparse, produce had nothing special (but they did have full rainbow carrots bunch's with stems, credit for at least having those), the refrigerated fats were paired down to only butter, no duck fat, no creme fraiche, none of the great gourmet items they used to carry around the cheese case. I mean, I could go down the list aisle by aisle of what they didn't have, but honestly you can simply walk in and scan the area and see they much feel they are no longer competing. There's honestly nothing there that warrants my drive anymore and it's a shame because they may be thinking that their sales are in the bag from no longer having WF next door to content with, but people shop there for specialty items and if they no longer carrying those items, or if we can get them easily at any other grocery store, it's only a matter of time before we'll lose our only Fresh Market too. And that would truly suck because then we'll be stuck with the same old basic boring food options or will have to rely solely on online ordering. Or drive even farther across the bay to a store that provides a modern variety. Fingers crossed our local FM picks up the slack and makes improvements. They used to be really phenomenal, so if they can get back to being the quality market we rely on for bettering the way we cook for our families, hopefully we won't lose them. read more

Unless you have money to spend, don't darken the door here. Needless to say, things here are a bit more expensive than Wal Mart, but if you're looking for better cuts of meet or more hard-to-find specialty meats (this is where I get my duck breast), it's pretty good. They have a nice range of specialty coffees and teas as well as a good butcher shop. I will say that they are stretching it a bit with the free-range, all-natural, organic, gluten-free artisanal firewood (see below.). The place is a bit bougie BUT the staff are friendly and helpful! Again, it's a bit on the more expensive side so be warned! The Fresh Market boasts weekly specials, weekend deals, and Little Big Meals which are meals that are usually $20 and easy to pull together for the family. Their ribeyes are the best I have have ever cooked! I love their bulk department for things like chocolate covered pretzels, nuts and snack mixes. Tuesdays are an excellent day to stock up on Chuck and Chicken with amazing per pound pricing! Their honeycrisp apples are colossal and so very flavorful as are the rest of the items in their produce section! Fresh Market, you all are going to end up getting sued. I will also be leaving this review on Google and on Yelp until something is done about it. You all are getting terrible about expired food or food that has otherwise spoiled. I don't know what you're doing to make the food spoil before the expiration date, but it needs to stop. maybe you all aren't refrigerating it fast enough or something like that, but it keeps happening and I'm tired of taking trips back to the store to get my money back for bad produce and food. First, it was some spinach that was expired weeks prior still sitting on the shelf. I'll accept responsibility for not looking at the expiration date, but let's be real. this is Fresh Market. I shouldn't have to. I took it home to saute it and the smell of ammonia filled up my kitchen. I scraped it out of my skillet, put it back in the tub with the fresh spinach and took it back and made you all smell that. I was refunded. Next, it was the tofu. this time, I was sure to check the expiration date. it didn't expire for months in advance. it was properly sealed. I put it in a skillet to saute it and the smell of ammonia was so strong it almost knocked me off my feet. I reached out to the company and told them that they need to recall it and I told Fresh Market they need to take it off the shelf. I went straight to the manager. I let him smell it. Nothing was done. It stayed on the Shelf like I never said anything. Just yesterday, I bought a $30 Lobster tail. I specifically asked when they were brought in and I was told they were brought in Thursday. I brought it home, put it in my steamer and let it steam. as soon as I pulled it out, it reeked of an ammonia smell. Why would something go bad this soon if you just got it the day before? the math ain't mathing. Somebody is going to mess around and get sick off of this food. We already lost Whole Foods. I don't want to see this place go, but management needs to step it up. I'm tired of complaining to people and nothing is getting done. We pay too much for this food for it to be bad like this. This place is going downhill fast which is unfortunate because It's been my favorite store for years and I enjoy the small location vs. going to walmart or publix even if it is 2-5x more!! It used to be worth it! I used to get the salmon from the seafood department religiously like every day. One day it just changed. I don't know if they got a new supplier or what but since then it has not been the same. Quite nasty tbh. Same with the produce department. The do not keep up with what's on the floor and I have to go thru literally everyyy single piece of fruit and carefully select it. I just spent $72 just on organic fruits and it either doesn't taste good or has alr gone bad .... to me this is just unacceptable for THE FRESH MARKET. i worked here years ago and the standard was held incredibly high. But, Nathan was also the manager then so. Could have something to with it. Their deli items are usually pretty good as well. The store is well kept and the associates are friendly. This grocery store is a one stop shop for anything you're looking for when entertaining! Came in as a last resort to get some cheese for an epic charcuterie board I was planning. Came away with some awesome new loves in the cheese department. My new favorite is Red Fox Leicester. It's like no other cheese I've ever tasted. It's rich with these amazing crunchy pieces in it. You just gotta try it! Also I wish I had come here when I had hunted around everywhere for gourmet mustards because now that I don't need them, they have them. So this place was on my list of "Must Visits" when I returned to Mobile this year for Thanksgiving. I had been considering relocating here to be closer to family and was bummed they didn't have a Whole Foods here. But, after a little research, I discovered this was the closest thing. When I walked into the store, my jaw dropped and I was like, "I'm home!" I would definitely have to frequent this place when becoming home sick if I do relocate here. The selection was great. It reminded me of the old Wild Oats stores in Vegas before Whole Foods bought them out. Not as big as a Whole Foods, but the same quality you'd expect from a Whole Foods. I loved the layout of the store and how comfortable it felt. I could see myself shopping this place often. The only downer was their lack of a vegetarian selection. I was totally shocked when I asked the store manager if they carried Tofurky and he looked at me like I was an alien! You'd think a place like this would have a special vegetarian/vegan section, but maybe there aren't a lot of vegetarians in Mobile? The only reason why this place only gets four stars is due to their lack in vegetarian options. Outside of that, it's a great store. read more

Completely tired of restaurant food this week, and it's only Monday! I bought this wonderful "Hot Pressed" Santa Fe Chicken Wrap and a side of Lemon Pasta Salad and headed for the hotel. I was pleasantly surprised with my first bite of the wrap, a great mix of chicken, cheese, purple onion & tomato... and the pasta salad was better than my Mom's. Fresh Market is on-par with Whole Foods, albeit smaller in size. The 'whole paycheck' also applies. But it is still foodie nirvana. Walking around I hear choir music (Hallelujah!) in my head as I wander the aisles. But not is all as it seems: the meat section is a veritable feast for the eyes, but they don't even bake their own baked goods. Even big soul-less chain stores like walmart and Publix bake their own goods. How do I know this? Well, I was feasting my eyes on one of their red velvet cupcakes in the dessert case, and I asked the lady behind the counter when it was baked, and she said that she couldn't be sure, as they arrive frozen. So much for 'fresh'. They do have a large sushi to-go section, but I should have known better, as it was all gummy rice. Would be nice if they had an actual sushi bar to make it fresh for you. Overall, nice to walk around and pick up a few impulse items, but definitely not my regular place to grocery shop. Beware the baked goods. read more

I usually just grab something from their prepared food area - I've tried the sushi and I've tried some of the pasta salads. I'll usually grab some fruit and a snack or dessert. An oasis in the food desert...not only does Fresh Market carry a ton of products that you will not find elsewhere, but they usually have samplers out and - I've been told - they will open a bag of chips if you want to taste. Additionally, the folks working in the deli, meat, seafood and veggie areas are very knowledgeable and can potentially answer your questions rather than the blank look you might get at your local chain supermarket. This is my favorite grocery store in Mobile - however, a note of caution regarding the new $5 roasted chicken on Thursday- the promotional ads encourage shoppers to pair the chicken with the FM deli salads/sides. I bought the smallest container of orzo pasta( pasta, oil, spinach leaves) and got to the cash register and was surprised it was charged at $8.99/pound ($6.47) . Also check your receipts - discovered Tyra overcharged by ringing up 2 items twice( in error )and also miscoded the green onion (mis charge) all occurred on the same day. Do not work here. I had a situation with a co-worker he was treating me very bad and talking to me nasty because I'm a girl I'm guessing, I really don't t know why he was treating me this way. Therefore I went to the manager 4 times about it and asked the manager to help me fix it and talk to him so he will not treat me like dirt and the problem didn't get fixed. 2 customers witnessed how he was treating me and told the manager I spoke to about this matter. The other manager the guy manager called me into his office a few days later and brought up this situation I had with my co-worker and said it was all my fault and that I should've told a manager which I did, but the other manager lied to make herself look better and said I never spoke to her about it and I told him I did and he just said he didn't believe me. He then treated me like I was nothing he was very rude and disrespectful and unprofessional he blamed a whole bunch of other things on me when he even said it himself he had no proof he said he didn't care what I had to say about it that he knows it was me. I then tried to step out of the tiny office because I could not breathe and was getting upset about there ridiculous accusations against me and how he was speaking to me and he pushed me away from the door and slammed it shut and held the door shut and told me he was not done with me. I began to have very sensitive, horrible flashbacks of bad times in my life because of this. I encourage people especially females not to work at this store because they treat females very badly especially the manager. I wish I could do something more than write a review but I'd rather not stir up a whole bunch of problems because they would most likely believe the manager over me and I have no proof on this matter other than a witness. read more

The Fresh Market has a really nice produce section featuring many organic fruits and veggies. What I really like is the salad bar that has Earthbound Farms organic spinach and organic baby romaine lettuce for $5.99 a pound. You will get a lot of leaves for that price. It's better than paying $3 for a 5 ounce bag! If you can't eat the non-organic prebagged stuff, like me, come here and buy by the pound. The Fresh Market also has organic milk in gallons for $5.39. This is the only store in the whole city that I know of that sells organic milk this way. Nice lighting with soothing instrumental music. VERY polite staff. For Mobile - I would give this 5 stars - but compared to gourmet markets in other areas - it only gets 3 1/2 to 4. I shop here quite often - more so than any other food store in Mobile. Of course - you understand - this isn't really a restaurant - so I'm not sure why they have it in this category. Naman's Market on Dauphin and Florida is more of a combination market/restaurant if that's what you're looking for. Fresh Market is really a "market". They have some good prepared food (skip the sushi bar - trust me). But honestly - that's not why you go here. You go here because it has the best customer service in Mobile. I don't mean for markets or restaurants - I mean for anything. They simply know how to treat customers. They realize people pay more to shop here - and they show it. I've complimented their management on more than one occasion for that very reason. Now...aside from that..........the meat and breads are spectacular! The sourdough - be sure to get the sourdough - you won't be sorry. Their chicken sausage - several varieties in the meat case - is just wonderful. Hard to find better steaks - the stuffed burgers - all the beef - really, really good. And the boneless, skinless chicken breasts...I'm not sure what is different about them -but you'll never buy them anywhere else after you try these. But don't buy seafood here. (In fact - if you're in Mobile you really shouldn't be buying seafood anywere other than a local seafood market. SHAME ON YOU if you do. I believe that is akin to eating at Red Lobster in Mobile - ARE YOU KIDDING???) Sorry - I digress. Great wine and beer selection - probably the best in Mobile. They have produce that you can't find anywhere else and it is always fresh - looks like it came right out of the garden. The olive bar is unique for Mobiel as well. And don't forget the flower market. You can usually find everything you need to throw together an arrangement - from very casual to quite elegant. Now remember - this isn't Wal Mart or even Bruno's - its not a one stop shop. They have minimal "household items" - paper towels, dishwashing liquid and such. So don't go there to "stock up". Go there to get GREAT food that you can't find anywhere else in Mobile - especially the quality of the fresh foods. So - overall - I'd have to say - if you buy your primary "food" staples anywhere else in Mobile - you either have to save money (which I completely understand) - or you just don't know good food. Yes. This place is a step better in the quality of their products and their customer service is remarkably similar to that of Publixs. The people are oooh so friendly, I adore places where people working there are not afraid to speak to the customers, they are not afraid to help the customers get whatever it is that they made need and most importantly they are not afraid to check me out when I'm ready to go versus hiding when they see me and my buggy coming.
