I stopped at the deli to pick up a pound of corned beef and was completely ignored for 15-20 minutes. I finally asked the two men working the sushi if they could find someone to help me. They looked around, pointed, and said she is right there. Then turned their backs to me. There was ONLY ONE other person working at the deli. I patiently waited while she had a personal conversation with with a customer, then she walked to the other side and ignored me. I love this store, but will not come back. To treat your customers so rudely does not instill loyalty. read more

Do you ever have an experience that just turns your stomach? Like it doesn't matter how otherwise fantastic the business is...that the one small situation stands out in your mind and makes it hard to return? That's how I feel about this location of the Fresh Market right now. My first time visiting was positive. I primarily needed some nice snacks for a gathering I was hosting that afternoon. I picked up a delectable gingerbread pound cake, banana bread, sliced cheese, and similar items. I also loved the rotisserie chicken salad in the ready-made section around the deli. My second visit earlier in the month was much more comprehensive. I had a $10 off coupon for spending at least $60, so I went a little overboard on my purchase. By the time I was checking out, I had accrued over $130 worth of produce, meats, dips, and snacks. The cashier was super friendly and said she had a coupon for $20 off over $100, so that was a nice perk. They also have paper bags available if you ask. A couple days later, I went to open one of the dips (see photo attached), and not only did it not have a protective covering, but it was half eaten on the inside! I called the store and someone in the meat department picked up. He apologized and sounded shocked, but then he transferred me to the produce department (where I purchased it) and I got such a weird vibe. The guy who picked up replied, "Okay" (nada on the apology or empathy front) and he also sounded like he was trying not to laugh. He told me I could return it, but I hardly drive, it was cold, and the toll is $0.70 each way to reach it. I saw no reason to spend extra money to return a half-eaten container of $3.49 dip, especially since I did get that unexpected discount at the check out. It went down the trash chute instead. I've never experienced such a thing at any grocery store in the past, and I've never seriously paused in my grocery shopping to check for signs of prior consumption. I don't see how a patron could've seriously consumed some dip and placed it back on the shelf. I understand things happen, but I can't say I trust the store after that. Maybe one day I'll return and update my rating, but for now, I'll choose one of the other myriad grocery options in the area. read more

I'm from Greensboro, North Carolina so naturally I'm a big fan of Fresh Market, but what a poorly run branch. This is what happens when you have bad leadership, it leaches down into the rest of the employees. After multiple lackluster experiences, I keep coming back because it reminds me of my hometown, but recently I think I would prefer Publix or Whole Foods or Elwood. I was in search of a Chenin Blanc or a Pet Nap to go with the Thai food we were having for a dinner party. After perplexed looks from the staff one member takes me to the manager, the manager proceeds to condescendingly tell me that isn't a wine, like I'm an idiot. All the while not looking up at me. I had to come in the store and the employees still said the order wasn't ready. after asking for managers to speak with, the general manager, Gregg came up and was very snarky. as if it were my fault for waiting. One of the best gourmet grocery stores ever. The store isn't large, but the food selections are vast and amazing. Delicacies like I've never seen before, and the fresh meats and produce are absolutely first rate. In addition, there are excellent sales for each day of the week. One of my favorites is Thursday's $5 Sushi... I'm very particular about sushi, and the spicy shrimp is the best. Their prepared foods are also delicious, especially the large selections of side dishes by the pound, Panini's, their great potato salads etc etc etc. - All in all, it's a very comfortable environment and the employees are extremely helpful and friendly. read more

A very good grocery store - especially convenient when trying to avoid Kroger's parking lot. They have great produce, fish and pre-made meals. There's also plenty of quality brands that are difficult to find elsewhere. The wine selection is also good. However, the prices are higher than I'd prefer. But... weigh the pros and cons... I'd rather go to Fresh Market and pay more instead of go to Kroger to deal with the parking, crowds and lack of produce. read more

I had the worst experience with Fresh Market yesterday while trying to order catering. The Deli Department was non-responsive by phone and the manager passed the buck to corporate. She took no responsibility for the actions of teh folks in her store. I love the quality but their customer service has go way down hill. They are almost as bad a Kroger. I can't wait until Whole Foods opens on Broad Street. Shop at Fresh Market but don't order catering, you will be disappointed. read more

Since we don't have any gourmet nor health food places near where we live, I traveled to this store and glad they have some organic and specialty food items, however, the prices are very high for the things I can get at my local supermarket (a small pack of raspberries for $6.99???). I love their veggie chips, apple chips (unlike the bagged kind you can get at regular stores, there are thick and fluffy), green bean "chips", organic pumpkin seeds. Great variety of salad dressings but I didn't see the ones I like, Bragg's calorie free. I was hoping to find more selection of Asian foods & condiments but all I got was an extremely overpriced $11 small pack of suspiciously very dark miso paste. All I needed was the regular miso... They have an amazing selection of candies by the pound, coffees, nuts & dried fruits too that I was impressed (but I'm trying not to eat that stuff so I didn't get any sweets). Since this is a gourmet, specialty store, don't expect a speedy checkout either. For the healthy essentials, this store is good, the rest... Meh. read more

Not enough space in the store to accommodate shoppers. Repeatedly had to walk around the front of the deli counter to access a different section of the meat/seafood counter because there was no space to walk from one end of the meat counter to the other. Customer services was great at the meat counter, but not anywhere else. Employees working the floor pretended I didn't exist when restocking shelves and the girl at the register never once made eye contact with me and left me standing with my shopping basket in hand while I completed the transaction. (This was experienced on my second visit). The worst offender, for me, was the bakery. I got a box of donuts that bore that same day's date on them. When I got home I ate one and it was stale and bland. Pretty much a piece of white bread with icing. In the positive, I can say that some items are a little cheaper than I would find elsewhere, but they are very few. Honestly, I don't see any reason to continue shopping there. read more

Great for specialty, dry, or canned goods. But anything perishable? There are cheaper and better quality options literally anywhere else. And I'm not sure what's up with their stock, but it seems to go bad very quickly after purchase. Like before the sell by date quick. I'm not sure if its a lack of preservatives thing, or an old inventory thing or what, but anything i've bought here that has to be refrigerated goes bad in under 4 days. I think it might be the store brand specifically. All of the non-produce related mold incidents were with fresh market products. I know it can't just be me, the last time I shopped here the store brand sliced cheese was literally a sheet of mold! I get mold is a plus on some cheeses, but not Havarti! read more

Their new Carytown location is a win! I am fan of their meats: fresh fish and great butcher department. Its always great looking meat and the staff in the department is always friendly. Their bakery is a secret win in my book. They have one of the best Apple pies that we have bought in recent years. Typically this would be something I would only want baked; however Fresh Market's is good enough that I dont even want to put the effort into making it homemade. My only knock on the place is that the aisles are tiny and tough to deal with when they are busy. read more

So last night when Chipotle's lights beckoned but a sign on the door whispered "not yet," I headed next door to Fresh Market. Friday evening with maybe a few dozen shoppers - I found several delightful items for dinner, including their ready made burgers (blue cheese, bacon/cheeseburger, portabella/gouda), and some spinach artichoke dip that made a nice heated side dish with grated parmesan on top. The staff was super helpful and friendly. I can't rule out Fresh Market for special trips every once in a while. read more

Fresh market is a great healthy market in a prime location near restaurant poppin' Cary street. They have great deals on meat, fresh fruits and veggies and healthy snacks. They also have unique/tasty versions of candy and baked items for those who like myself love sweets :) read more

I stopped by Fresh Market while in Carytown to pick up a few things. The store has a variety of hot meals, specialty items, groceries, desserts, etc. I got a cupcake and tiramisu from the dessert section. I thought each item was tasty. There was a special on crab salad, so I ordered some to go (priced by the pound $$$$). Fresh Market crab salad was tasty as well. I was able to find a lot of interesting items browsing. I don't shop here often but Fresh Market has some good eats. Fresh Market is a good choice for hot food or specialty grocery items. I give Fresh Market a 3.5 rating. read more

Personally, I think this location and the one on Huguenot are my favorite places w/o question to buy beef, sausage, peppered ham and chicken breasts. Of all of the Fresh Markets in Richmond this location seems to be substandard compared to the others. Today I went there at 5:00pm to buy some Cod that they had on special. Only to find out that they did not have any. What a let down. The store is poorly stocked and some of the people at the meat counter can use a course in customer service. I will say, first, I am not a huge chain fan. However, I think this store in good for the area, and can be supported. Elwood Thompson's has always seemed a bit too exclusive to me, but they will survive. Kroger will be fine, and I usually shop there. The only grocery store that might be in trouble is Martins. They have really taken a dive in all aspects (customer service, fresh products, and prices). I wish they would bulldoze that entire block and start over again. The Fresh Market does have an EXCELLENT selection of meat and produce, as well as specialty items (Tillamook cheese). Their meat counter seems like an old-school butcher shop, albeit in sterile surroundings. I will say that I will continue to shop here, just not every week for everything. read more

I think this is one of the better supermarkets in the area unless you wish to hoove it to short pump.I usually do farmers markets,ellwoods and here for my shopping.I like the specialty items that this spoiled new yorker is used to.The snacks,frozen good and the just like your mama baked cookies are a stand out.I'm on a mostly organic diet so this works wonders for what the local supermarkets lack especially in the frozen section.They also run great specials and sales here..love this place.One star away for the lackluster sushi I had..other then that..they rock. read more

Disappointing.... I spent way too much money there and the quality was not great. Specifically, I bought quite a bit of fruit. A small watermelon which I cut into the next day and it was literally "melting" inside. Liquid and disgusting (is that why they were on sale? Over ripe?). The peaches were rotten and the plum brown and mushy inside. I should have gone to Walmart, at least their fruit is fresh. The prices are ridiculous. I would expect much better. I should have taken the fruit back, but it all went in the trash. shame on them. read more

We've been regulars since it opened. We buy all of our proteins from Fresh Market and some other items. Best crab legs around. Meats are fresh and can be prepared on the spot. We've had them debone turkey breast for us, ground meats etc. We stopped going to Kroger because we found we were returning the chicken regularly finding that what should have been fresh had been through a frozen/thaw/frozen cycle (cooked the chicken is rubbery) The only issue I have with this store is the disorganization of the meat counter especially on sale days. It gets a bit chaotic and they don't always utilize their number system. read more

This market deserves its superlatives for many reasons BUT today, for the second time, I encountered an odd thing at the sushi bar. The lunch pack I typically buy was "specially"priced: $5 vs. $6.95. Well, the price is special but so is the quantity. In the first case 9 pieces in lieu of 12; in the second, 10 smaller than normally sized pieces. If you were counting on "lunch" in that value pack, you need to be a light eater. In the first case the sushi chef made me a normally sized pack at normal price; today's chef wasn't interested. read more

This place opened up about the same time I moved into Richmond, would rather it be Whole Foods so that I don't have to drive to the west end every week but you cant always get what you want. Luckily there are FOUR, yes F-O-U-R grocery stores on this corner so I bounce around to all of them to get the best prices. Fresh Market is where I go for bulk nuts & dried fruits for my kids and there meat & fish counter is better than the other three combined. Everything else is pretty so so, its a beautiful space though...little tightly packed but pretty. read more

When out of town people come to visit they leave with TFM envy. What grocery store runs out of chicken thighs and has bruised red onions on display? Fresh Market this last Monday. I had gathered all the ingredients for a chicken dish and then waited for five minutes for a meat department employee to come from the back. I put everything back and then decided it would be easier to buy the whole legs and cut it up myself and debone rather than shop all over at Kroger. Next time, I'll go elsewhere. This store has a great vibe. The meat section has the best cuts of steak. They have a couple weekly specials that I thoroughly enjoy.

I shop here sometimes because the meats, seafood and produce are very fresh looking, although somewhat overpriced. I also stop here pretty often to pick up soup to go. They have a good variety and they're usually very good. Today I stopped by to get soup (New England Clam Chowder, Boston Strong!) for lunch. I went right back to my office and dug into my chowder. Aaargh, it was stone cold, not refrigerator cold but room temperature cold. I immediately brought it back to the store. They had no problem giving me a refund, but I was more troubled by the health risk of creamy seafood soups sitting out for hours at room temperature. Not what I'd expect from an overpriced gourmet market. Gotta be a health code violation, right? read more
