We shop at Fresh Market for their specials, and one of our favorites is the lump crab cakes when they are two for $12. They are full of crab with little filler. We also enjoy their Maryland crab cakes. but they are spicier. My husband really likes their coffee selection. They have bins and bins of beans that you scoop, grind, and bag the amount you want to buy. I like that they carry some David's teas and Harney & Sons teas. Their bakery offers some delicious small dessert so you can buy the small size to try it out or for variety. Their flowers are lovely, though on the more expensive side than Trader Joe's across the street. Staff are friendly and efficient. I have especially found them helpful when I buy a meal package during the holidays. These packages come with meal, dessert, and flowers. They are a big hit in our home. Parking is easy, and the store is just off Monticello Avenue. read more

Customer service is still atrocious. Stood at the bakery to get something from the case for a few minutes without even being acknowledged despite there being two workers not helping anyone else. Saw that the Teton beef sausages were on sale-2 boxes expired in Jan. one box expired in 2024 and wait for it, one expired in 2023. Once we reached the register the cashier did not speak at all. It's like you're in a parallel universe in that store where you're an utter inconvenience to even be in the store. The only positive with this store is that it's aesthetically pleasing but outside of that the pricing is bad, customer service is bad and clearly they aren't checking expiration dates either. read more

Hands down the best grocery store in Williamsburg. Fresh veggies, amazing butcher shop, and delicious deli meat, cheese, and sides. Love their dessert selection too--tasty cakes and cookies for those of us who rarely bake. The store is well-stocked with fresh flowers and potted plants when you need to pick up a nice gift. Their seasonal herbs-in-pots are excellent--robust plants that last. Even better, they provide excellent customer service. When the lines are long, they open additional registers and those who staff them are consistently friendly. This could be such a great place to shop but, unfortunately, it is not. The meat counter is huge but most of it is beef. Whenever I have requested a special order, they cannot get it. Why can they not order game birds during the holiday season? Why can you not get a special cut of meat? Have they never heard of D'Artagnan? The bakery is pretty good but still leaves a lot to be desired. Of everywhere in Williamsburg, this is my favorite grocery store. It's not the cheapest, but it does have the best selection of pre-made or easy to make foods, found in the back of the store. This place is as close as you'll come to a local butcher shop and I'm fine with that because they do it so well. They have the widest range of meats and cheeses, and their twice-baked potatoes can win over anybody. This store carries a good selection of dry goods and specialized beverages (alcoholic, healthy, and in between). I've never waited a long time to check out or be helped by staff. read more

What a lovely store! If I lived here, I'd be a regular. It was difficult to resist ALL the things, but as we're only here till the end of the week, we had to be tough. As it is, we ended up buying one of their cloth bags because there's no way we could get everything into the one we brought. I got some lunch - a cranberry-walnut salad with feta, and a package of grilled chicken strips which I also used for two other meals. I kind of wish they'd had a raspberry vinaigrette, but the balsamic vinegar dressing packet was delicious in this salad. DD swooned over the impressive array of specialty cheeses and managed to limit herself to only three, lol. Their produce looked amazing and the hot foods on offer looked great. They have a full-service butcher with fresh seafood, and a deli with pre-packaged and sliced-to-order options. It's super clean and well laid out, lots of free parking and easy to get to. Though The Fresh Market has an impressive array of specialty items, meats, and pastries, the prices are very high and from my experience, the staff is not friendly or terribly helpful. Yesterday around 10 am I visited the Fresh Market for just a few items. I found many great items! But the highlight of this quick store run was my checkout lady. She greeted me with a bright smile and made me feel welcomed. I was satisficed and joyful. Katherine was so quick and just awesome overall. She was very polite (Yes Ma'ams) and such a sweetheart. This is one of the best gourmet grocery stores in Virginia, let alone Williamsburg. I always look forward to coming here, it's like a pilgramage for me. When you get gourmet, you're looking at gourmet prices. So don't go if you want a deal on basics. When you walk in the door, take a moment to just breathe deeply. This place smells amazing - a combination of spices, flowers, fresh fruits, roasted coffee, cooking meats, pastries and sugar, cheese, and everything else that is yummy and delicious here. Their pastries are AMAZING. I live off the chocolate croissants and the cheese danishes when I'm back in town. I also love their prepared foods counter - they have a great rotisserie counter where you can get all kinds of yummy chicken and ribs. They have a small selection of other sides like potato salad, macaroni, fruit salad, orzo, and other seasonal freshly prepared items. I agree on the beer and wine prices being too high. Same for spices and... well basically everything not in the produce and meats arena. But ah, the produce and meats are so very good. This was my favored stop after work to pick up dinner items when I lived on Jamestown Road. This is one of the only places you can get a Hereford Ribeye for a reasonable price, and I strongly recommend it. The produce is seasonal and as local as possible (according to the store, which i am inclined to believe.) Also, bring your own bag and save a few cents. As to the other reviewer's comments: being from the North I can't comment much on "Yankee snobbery," except that I am surprised at how often my origin came up in when I lived in Virginia. Focusing back on this store though, I never had a problem with rude staff. Everyone was always helpful and friendly, but perhaps they were just afraid of my "Yankee" trickery. read more

Place is basically the spitting image of Whole Foods. That being said this place has a huge selection of groceries from fruits and veggies, to fresh cut meats, to lunch/dinner foods as well as a salad bar. Naturally, the prices at this store is usually higher then what you would find at other grocers, but sometimes you really get what you pay for. I love Fresh Market but lately the Williamsburg location has stopped handing customer their receipts and instead expect them to get their own receipt from the machine. I think that is poor. This is, I would guesstimate, one of the smaller-medium size FMs, but the layout is the same. Enjoyable, efficient, and stocked with the faves. Similar to a Whole Foods, or even Wegman's grocery store, but smaller, this store has a wide variety of higher end foods ranging from meats, seafood, bakery, cheeses, to various candies and snack mixes, plus refrigerated and frozen items. Plus a decent selection of wines. If you're used to shopping at Walmart or similar, you might experience a bit of sticker shock here, but you'll also find a lot more unique and varied items that you wouldnt find at your typical grocery store. Clean and well laid out store. Note: one of the items we bought was the Tiramisu cake from the bakery section. After having it tonight, it tastes nothing like Tiramisu, more like a plain/vanilla cake with some chocolate shavings on top. Would not get that again. read more

I really like this place for the best in the area for meats and dairy. The produce section isn't bad as well, although there is more variety at Ukrops. Other than that, I have a lot of gripes. First, the prices are really steep on many items. For specialty items and organics they used to be the only game in town. With local market competition, as well as a Trader Joe's in Newport News, their prices can be absurd. Second -- attitude! The people behind the counter are nice, but the cashiers are the snottiest around. Third -- the clientele. The Kingsmill and Fords Colony types dominate this store and it drips of elderly Yankee snobbery. Avoid this place like the plague when the seniors are out. I have contacted "corporate" twice via email about recycling plastic shopping bags offered at Fresh Market. I get nothing other than "we will take it under advisement". It has been over 3 months since I asked for some response. I get nothing! In essence; this is the most expensive food store claiming to be most organically friendly in the Williamsburg area, well, bravo; however, Fresh Market does not offer a place for reclying plastic bags even though plastic is offered at the checkout. So, how is that organically friendly? After months of no response, this Wednesday, my complaint was published in The Virginia Gazette. We are new to Williamsburg. Moved here from Northern Virginia where we had access to many grocery stores. I am so pleased to see Trader Joe's right here is river city! We mainly rely on Martins for general shopping. We would recommend some of their baked-fresh daily breads. Good selection. Whole Foods too was a another market I liked for fresh veggies and different items I couldn't find elsewhere. The closest is now Newport News. This brings me to the Fresh Market a similar find here in Williamsburg. I was delighted to find Fresh Market. Different selections. Good produce. Able to find ingredients I can't find in the other markets. I feel they have the best meat and fish section in town. I have learned to trust the quality. Yesterday, Feb 23rd, 2016, I was frustrated by the wait time. When I popped in to buy fish for dinner at 4:30p the counters were very busy. I'd say nearly 15-20 people were waiting. Only 2 employees working the counter. They were on #89 ... the number I pulled was #121. What! I had my heart set on fish for our dinner. I have heard of Russ' but since I hadn't yet been I decided this was the better bet even though a long wait. No other employees came to help. It was clear customers had walked out because no answer came for some numbers called. About half way through my wait I asked a gentleman who had been waiting for some time who was there when I arrived if he had seen any other employees. He said no. I couldn't believe that. I decided to walked up to a women who handles stocking the nuts and candies ... I asked if she could find others to help on the counter. She said they were short staffed. No sorry. No ... I will see what I can do. Just that's it. So, I walked back to wait for my #121 to be called. At that time I noticed that there were 4 people on the cheese and deli counter. Couldn't they pitch in and get some of these people waited on. All the while new customers are arriving. Finally my # was called. Just then 2 other men walked in behind the counter. I asked the man who was helping me where they came from. He said they were in the back playing cards ... chuckle, chuckle. Of course, kidding. At least he was good humored while trying to help all these customers. I remarked how terrible this was. How they were losing customers. At a time of day they should expect more customers coming in after work ... to me, this is very poor planning. They have to do better. This is why I would encourage management to look at this! I don't like to point out short-coming. But, this is one of the "better" markets in town. What are you thinking??!! A grateful customer who hopes you can do better. read more

But I didn't appreciate going in to pick up a salad and sandwich for my husband and standing behind the manager for 10 minutes as he took inventory of every sandwich and salad they had and didn't bother to acknowledge that a paying customer was attempting to browse through them. I admit, I'm a Californian food-snob. Whenever we venture out of town on vacation, one of my big concerns is, "Are we going to have easy access to a quality grocery store, with wholesome, fresh, and preferably organic foods?"
