Hawkeye's - Delicious cajun chicken sandwich. Flavourful and under $9!

I've tried the pizza bread, nachos and both Cajun chicken and grilled cheese sandwiches, all of which were tasty and all of which were in the $6-9 range. The beer is cheap and cold, although I'll never forget the conversation when I first sat down: Waitress: "What'll you have to drink?" Me: "What kind of beers do you have on tap?" Waitress: "Canadian." Me: "I'll have a Canadian." Service here is very good. The ladies who have served me remember my name, and are always warm. Mary in particular is a totally amazing server, and one of my favourite waitresses in the city - I look forward to seeing her every time I go! Make no mistake though, these servers know how rough around the edges their clientele can be, and they don't take crap. I can tell. Karaoke nights are hilarious and just as unpretentious as the rest of the Hawkeye's experience. Go on a Thursday-Saturday night and find out for yourself! I'm always enjoy my visits here; great little spot in downtown Edmonton.

It draws some of the same crowd in as those more popular bars, but it also has a real mix of people filling up the tables and booths. It's a lower-scale place that's part restaurant, part bar. The pizza was surprisingly VERY yummy here! Although they don't have very many beers on tap (I think it was a total of 1), we still had a really fun night with a big group of friends here. Out waitress (I forget her name, but everyone else seemed to know her) was fantastic. She was friendly and attentive (which was very impressive given how busy the place was). I would come by again for the pizza and a beer next time I'm in the mood for a very laid-back evening.

Friday and Saturday nights are karaoke nights and it gets pretty fun. As Greasy as the End Zone, but the people aren't quite as scary. They've got a couple of pool tables and the selection of the songs in the juke box is alright. The beer is always less than $4. The beer prices are reasonable. The food prices are incredible. As long as you buy a beer, you can get a hamburger for 99 cents. They're not your luxury home burger but they're still good: covered in bacon, cheese and mushrooms. Without the beer they're $2. The Spring rolls cost $6, you can get a huge plate of onion rings for $4. Hello, is this the '80s?! Retro prices and your average pub experience, but what else are you looking for from a local drinking hole. They have pay-per-view sporting events if you're into boxing or ultimate fighting, VLTs if that's your thing. The servers are always friendly and know all the regulars. It's all right.

In summary, I would not recommend this establishment. During the Stanley Playoffs, I made two…read morereservations. The first visit excellent; the server was attentive, and food was enjoyable. However, the second experience was disappointing to say the least. I received a text message claiming I had missed my reservation followed by an inappropriate "wtf?" remark. When I provided a screenshot confirming my actual reservation for a different night the texter responded with "ha ha, my bad, must not have gotten the memo." Upon arriving for my confirmed reservation, there was no table reserved for us. We were placed at leftover table in a corner, the service was subpar, the owner displayed unprofessional behavior when he incorrectly to my friend as Mexican. When she corrected him, stating she was Venezuelan, he unapologetically laughed and walked away. The only reason I am giving two stars is because of the positive first visit.

We decided to do it again for 2022. Three of us charted the route on Dec 29th and went into the pub after. The two pizzas and wrap we had were excellent. (I had a pizza at BP in October and this was hands down far superior) Something about a wood burning oven just warms a person. We had about 22 people into the pub after our NYE hike. Everyone ordered food and drinks. There were a couple of forgotten drinks but overall the service was good and the food was excellent as well. It seems Glenn has done some renovations since we were last there. The place looked good and was clean. We were glad to be back. :) Happy New Year Uncle Glenn!

The one downside is that, as the name implies, it's DV8 Underground which means wobbling down that flight of stairs after a smoke break while you've already had a few drinks, but that comes down to how much you do or don't drink. The music is always decent to great, from open mic to planned shows with low cost tickets (5-15 on average). There's a bit of variety, acoustic to punk to post rock, so almost anyone can find at least one DV8 show that they've enjoyed more than just drinks at. The bathrooms (or at least the ladies) is pretty clean, some graffiti (but hey, I think it just adds to the atmosphere), always stocked with toilet paper/paper towels/soap unlike a lot of bars in the area.

On the night I went, there were a bunch of bands playing and admission was free. The music itself ranged from "What in the hell is this?" to "Okay, yeah I'm feeling this". The volume is ridiculously loud for the venue, which is why I took one star off. Your eardrums will be in actual pain (both from the volume and the more questionable bands playing). They do sell ear plugs, but I doubt they would help overtly much. If you're into the type of music, then I'd say yeah come on down. For myself it was mostly a painful experience. The space itself is decently large. The washrooms are in a state of disrepair and not for the squeamish type. I took a second star off because the place reeked of smoke. I'm very sensitive to smoke and my eyes started burning within half an hour of being inside the place.

Pretty nasty they could at least put some urinal pucks in. But all that said the waitress was really nice and welcoming and I found it was a great value for what I got. Will I go back?
