You couldn't even taste the fish unless you removed the breading, then it was OK. We shared the Cavatappi pasta with Mac n cheese and overcooked chicken. Stopped by for an early dinner, around 5:00pm. The place was empty, which made me nervous as it seems to not be a good sign when a restaurant is empty at that time. I do understand that Alexandria is a summer destination spot and September is their slow time. Restaurant was cozy, small, but nice. I sat at the bar and ordered a vodka martini. The bartender I could tell was new to bartending - my martini I think was made with gin and had chunks of ice in it. Bartender was such a sweetie and seemed nervous, so I just drank it and didn't say anything. I ordered the gyro. It was fine. Nothing special. 2 of the 3 appetizers were excellent (bruschetta & edamame) - Brussel sprouts needed a little work. The gnocchi and salad were large enough for 2 people to share and the desserts that we brought home were awesome! Tiramisu can be hit or miss and this was definitely a HIT! I love this type of place. A very cool setting in the middle of town. With exposed bricks and cool wood furniture. The cocktail menus is interesting. I had a well made Paper Plane and a Stinger that was ridiculously spicy (I like spicy stuff and couldn't finish). The concept was cool but no bartender should serve a drink this without a warning. The same challenge with The Blue Cheese Martini. My coworker had two, each was very different, and both had way too much vermouth and ice chunks floating. The food on the other hand was great across the board. The well made salads were a twist on the usual, mine with a great blue cheese dressing. The Caesar was a small head of romaine with an aggressive dressing. I had the Pork, which was a huge piece of tender meat, cooked perfectly to medium rare all the way through. It was served with perfect Smoked Gouda Mashed Potatoes (strong Gouda flavor, not too heavy, really perfect.). The whole thing was drizzled with a tart gastrique and served with roasted carrots. First off, I'd like to say that not many restaurants have the guts, the mettle to give you an Andes mint anymore. But im happy to report that the Garden Bar does have a spine compared to every other restaurant I've been to lately. (I understand the inherit irony of saying they have a spine at a garden restaurant, but whatever.) Overall, the place is super dope. Cool decor and plenty of seating. We had just gotten into town from hiking and going to the museum and we needed some grub. We'd been sustaining ourselves on camp food so we wanted something fresh. That was exactly what we got at the garden bar! The tea is a must. So delicious. A couple of options your can't go wrong with. The edamame is also worth it even though it's a bit pricey. I got the beet salad and my wife got the Cobb. Both are absolutely fantastic with loads of toppings! They have a plethora of dressing options so you can't go wrong. The service was crazy fast even though I only saw one gal and one bartender. I assume they also make the food, do the dishes, and take out the trash because they were so efficient. Just kidding, I don't want to take away anything from the incredible chefs/cooks/kitchen staff. Overall, a must stop for a fresh meal! read more

Happy hour: Monday HH after 5p special is BOGO cocktail/wine/beer with a full price appetizer. I'm trying to cut back on the booze so I went with the usual half-price flatbread special and $1 off glass of wine (ONE glass). Flatbread is not usually my thing and today didn't change my mind. The Margherita is entirely meh, totally lacking flavor, but the only vegetarian flatbread option. Barely any basil, maybe one leaf on the entire dish. Would benefit from a drizzle of reduced balsamic or red pepper flakes but I didn't get offered any. Just because I'm a pescatarian doesn't mean I don't like flavor. I challenge your chefs to come up with an interesting no-meat flatbread that carnivores like too. That Margherita gives vegetarians a bad name. HH here is still far too complicated and restrictive. Much as I love the venue/vibe it is again a disappointment. It was quiet when I walked in at 4:45 on a Monday and by 5:30 it started to pick up with 3-4 more tables, but seriously!
