We were traveling from Pittsburgh and a local business owner told us to stop in to the Gatehouse because there was a new chef, and the food was decent and inexpensive. Unfortunately we were highly disappointed in our experience here. We arrived around 11:20 and were told that someone would be over to get us drinks, but the restaurant didn't serve lunch until 11:30. We were perfectly fine with that. Unfortunately, the server walked past us at least 5 times before even greeting us. Ten minutes later, I asked for some water. It would have been nice to at least been greeted, given some water, and maybe even some menus to look at. They have a decent deal, where you pick two or three menu items for a reasonable price. We all chose either soup/salad and an entree. At noon, our salads and soups arrived. A half hour after we ordered them. The ginger soup was served in a ginormous bowl, and was quite delicious. My friends had the Caesar salad and it was generous as well (be aware it has bacon on it) I asked what the status of our meals because we were parked on the street (no private lot that I know of) and had to put more money in the meter. A server, who wasn't ours, said she would check. She came back in about ten minutes and told us it would just be another 10-15 minutes. For our entrees, three of us had the Alfredo pasta (not something I would normally eat but they didn't have many other options on the pick 2 for vegetarians) and my other friend had the beef bourgogne. Our pasta was good, but it seemed overly seasoned with pepper flakes and it was very creamy (heavy) which was good because the portion wasn't large by any means (it was just enough for lunch) My friend that ordered the beef bourgogne said that the meat itself was seasoned great, but the onions served were totally raw. Raw as in, couldn't even put a fork in them. These arrived at 12:30. We told the server, and although apologetic, nothing was offered to change our opinions of our dining experience here. The space outside is beautiful. The large windows allow you to sit and enjoy the scenery. The inside of the space is open, and cold. Not very inviting. Voices travel, so it's difficult to have a conversation here. From my experience here, this place is a very slow pace establishment and you need to know that going in to dining here. Looking back, I wish we would have asked them to put a rush on our food but I was unaware of the situation at the time. It took 30 minutes to get our soup and salad, and another 30 for an entree. Would be difficult to come here for weekday lunch. Also not sure of the wine/alcohol situation but would be nice to have a bottle of wine here (if they even have it) Ultimately, this place has potential but I don't feel as though when we stopped here that they had the routine quite down. read more

Run here, don't walk! It's fabulous! When I heard that the executive chef of treadwell was the chef at the Gate House, I thought maybe we should cancel our treadwell reservation and give this place a try. It's basically a pop up restaurant when they don't have events planned, is open as a restaurant. We got there at 6 and were seated immediately and were the only table for maybe 30 minutes. I started with the Caesar salad, with anchovies right on it. Hands down, the best Caesar salad I've ever had! My husband had the mussels that he described as brilliant and outstanding! We split the spaghettini e oli and that was incredible. The flavors and the perfectly cooked pasta with the fresh ricotta was honestly out of this world! Since my husband and I both ordered the prix fix menu (3 courses for 30 bucks, unreal deal), i did order the spaghettini as an additional course and I'm glad I did! We both had the braised beef and I swear, it was the best meal in recent memory. Pearl onions cooked to perfection with button mushrooms....staaahp it already, so good! I had the apple crumble with vanilla ice cream for dessert, it was nutty in flavor full of cinnamon served warm, but not hot. My husband had the chocolate cream brûlée, not my favorite, I prefer vanilla base. I cannot recommend this place more highly! I'm so grateful there wasn't an event planned there tonight, so we could experience the restaurant! Hats off to the chef, it was an absolute amazing dining experience!!! read more

My husband and I were sick of dealing with the amount of people at the wineries and decided to take a chance downtown for brunch. The restaurant is beautiful with a lot of light and the patio is nice too. We started with the charcuterie, which was fabulous! This was the best platter we have ever had. Our brunch was disappointing. I got the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and fennel salad. The eggs were super overcooked and rubbery. The fennel salad was way too big. It needed to be smaller! They also served it in a bowl, which made it worse to eat! My husband got the wedge salad. It was disappointing because it needed more blue cheese and bacon. The service was slow and our brunch took over an hour. We would come back for the charcuterie and drinks, but brunch was nothing special. read more

Amazing food and great service. Saw the one stars about bad service so went in thinking it may not be great. We came to make a reservation after eating at Treadwells and the staff was friendly. Night of the dinner the staff were all super friendly, great service and amazing atmosphere (even during COVID). The charcuterie was huge for the price and the four of us got all four different mains and we all really enjoyed our food. Amazing experience and best dining we had during our stay at NOTL. The location, patio and decor is great, however the brunch was very underwhelming and I was quite disappointed. I ordered the lobster omelet and there wasn't much inside the omelette with very little flavour too. I definitely did not feel like it was fair to charge $35 for this underwhelming omelette, with such poor presentation too. The dish came with plain rosemary toast and we didn't even have any butter or spreads that were offered to us. My husband ordered the smoked salmon eggs Benedict which was placed on one side of the plate and the other side was just bare. You would think that they could place a few slices of fruits or some greens on the plate to complete the dish. When you're paying a high price for brunch, the least they could do is offer a side. Typically when you order eggs Benny, it comes with a side of home fries or something! Unfortunately I would not recommend this place to my friends, pretty disappointing. read more

Very disappointed. We ate last night 15-Aug-2020. Service was way below a reasonable standard and that paired with the food getting 2-2.5/5 at best. Our server didnt know the drinks menu at all, and her knowledge of the food was marginally better. Starting out I had some questions about the beers on the menu, when I asked what type of beer one was the server just replied "I dunno" and left it there. No offer to find out or give any insight, just "I dunno". I ended up googling the Oast brewery to see what the beer was, hardly what you expect to have to do in a restaurant that sells itself as a premium establishment. Next we ordered food starting with a portion of fries to pick at while our main courses were being prepared. The fries were nice but they put the dipping sauce which Im assuming was mayo in a glass jar which was either straight out of the dishwasher or was under the heat lamp for a long time. It was HOT and the sauce had definitly started to turn. It was inedible. Our main courses were only just about ok, I got the chicken and it was just about cooked, not enough to say it was undercooked and send it back but definitly another 1-2 mins were needed. I was minimally seasoned and fairly bland. Only thing they got right was the crispy skin. The dish also came with a chicken croquet made with the dark meat of the chicken, seemed great but it was dried out and again just fell short due to poor execution in the kitchen. Overall it was just about ok but for the premium cost it was not good enough at all. Server never came near us after food was delivered, never asked how everything was and only engaged when I called her to come and give us the bill. The Gate House puts up a social veneer of high standards, doesnt rely on repeat business as its in a tourist trap so they know they really need to do good food to keep the doors open. Creates the idea of fine dining on their website but falls very very far short in practice. If the service was better I may have been more lenient on the food falling short but terrible service and mediocre food means it has to be 1 star. There just has to he better aces to eat in the town. Do yourself a favour and dig around to find them. read more

This place was absolutely terrible. We almost walked Out after waiting over 45 minutes with out being served one single dish, or bread. We had a party of 9, was seated right away because it was not that busy, for a simple lunch. It was not busy at all, and table after table was being seated and served before we received anything from the kitchen or bar for that matter. We ordered salads, and two small margarita pizzas, oh and a Scone. We tried ordering two chicken dishes but they are now discontinued items on the menu. Why have them on there? Once We inquired on the wait time of our food, once We started noticing tables being sat after we placed our order and being served their food before us. When we asked the waiter where is our food? he said oh um well I know they are Working on it.... 10-15 min later we asked the manager where our food was and she seemed less than thrilled and annoyed To help. She said all the salads grain bowls were plated And ready to go and they were waiting on the pizza to finish.. we asked her to bring the food that was prepared out. she came back with no food and said oh, they gave away some of your food by accident and the cooks are just playing new ones. What a lie and cover up! 10 min later our food finally started coming out and they completely forgot about one dish! But I thought the lady said they were all ready to come out? They just lied the whole time. Mean while our waiter went MIA... and after the manager finally brought the food over, our waiter finally checked on us, he had no clue what was going on. When we said we have been waiting 45 minutes for our lunch, he said "well I don't think that is really that long and unreasonable time to wait" !!! Haha I was thinking get me out of here. Food was Mediocre, could of had a better grain bowl at core life and the pizza was not good either. They only took 25% off the bill. Not one slice of bread was brought to the table during our 45 minute wait, no complimentary glass of wine was Offered, nothing. Longest story short, I would never go back there even for a Free meal. they were completely rude, no communication between the employees and completely disorganized. The resturant was super strange too. The dining room was half empty of furniture, no hooks in the restroom for purses, watered down soap that sprayed on you when you tried to wash your hands. My spouse and I booked dinner at the Gate House yesterday evening. Wow! What an excellent experience and Amazing customer Service! The hostess ( a young dark haired young lady, I sadly did not get her name) greeted us and kindly advised that although we had a reservation a table wouldn't be ready for about 10 minutes due to a delay with turnover a table. She was very apologetic. We waited patiently for our table as the current patrons were taking there sweet time and we could see they were oblivious to the waiting guests. The wait staff was very kind and handled things exceptionally well especially the hostess ( she was awesome and did everything she could - she went above and beyond). The hostess brought us complimentary glasses of sparking Scarpetta while we waited for the table to turnover as they were booked solid. When we were seated the manager came over to our table apologized and thanked us again for our patience and gave us a complimentary appetizer as well. Our waitress and the staff apologized several times and were amazing. The food was excellent and the service was out of this world. Overall an awesome experience and I would highly recommend! I don't know if it was us or the way we looked but they staff was far from welcoming and my wife and I both felt it. Our food was another story, I loved both dishes. Sadly we did not have a chance to dine here because the host was too rude to my party. I say sadly because it seems this hotel's restaurant has good food. However, for customer service and the way they treat potential diners, I would never return. A potential customer should never leave feeling mistreated. We originally asked for 8 seats at around 6:50 pm. The restaurant was not even a third full and they said they would need 20 minutes to set up. His attitude was already not the best, but we figured it was a decent place to dine from its interior design and were wiling to wait. However, after about 5 minutes and having another table of 6 come in for reservations, we realized that we needed to add four more seats to our party. The reaction from the host was incredibly inconsiderate - and he made us feel unwelcome by saying how difficult it would be to accommodate us because of this change in number. Again, the restaurant was not even a third full at the time, with plenty of seats in the back. My friend said graciously that more people just meant more food to be served to your customers - to which he replied dryly, "But the food takes time to be cooked." I was speechless. We then left and went to another restaurant on the strip. I can understand that others may have made reservations and that our change in number may cause an inconvenience to the seating plan. But it has never been my experience to receive such poor treatment while dining out and especially in Niagara. The host needs to learn how to better manage situations like this and how to treat others the way he would like to be treated. read more

Had the worst experience! My family and I were not planning on dinning here but ended up at the Gate House hotel because all of the other restaurants were closed (it was Dec 25th). Anyways, since the moment we entered the place, the concierge was very rude. He clearly profiled us just because we weren't dressed up as most of the patrons in the restaurant and was not courteous at all. The food was ok and really over priced. I have tried better dishes for the same price. But it doesn't end here, the icing of the cake was when we received the check, the waiter had written down with his own hand the tip we had to give. I had never seen that before! Or he also thought we weren't going to tip him? We are never going back to that place! read more

I went here with a group of girlfriends for a wine tasting birthday weekend. It was AMAZING. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is very centrally located and has free parking on site. We arrived early, parked, and were picked up from the hotel for a wine tasting, then came back and checked in to our room officially with no hassle whatsoever. We didn't eat at the restaurant - our wine tasting guide recommended a pub in town, which was great since we spent the evening wandering around the little shops - but it looked good? And the price can NOT be beat; so much lower than their competitors. The baseboards and some tiles in the bathroom have taken a bit of a beating, but they are obviously trying to keep things in repair. Since the room came with the most comfortable beds and a bathroom the size of my kitchen - helpful with a room full of ladies - I couldn't have cared less. read more
