Just a few minutes away by subway to Downtown, West Village, and all the other touristy places while you get to enjoy an enormous room with a view of actual live trees! The bed is terrific and the neighborhood is full of delightful restaurants and bars like Enoteca Harlem and Angel of Harlem. Rene is a delightful host and you'll get the experience of a lifetime staying in a piece of history! We stayed on the 3rd floor which I recommend, it is quiet and worth the walk up the stairs.

We arrived at The Harlem Flophouse on a Wednesday, our 15th wedding anniversary. The exterior and…read moreinterior of the brownstone was charming. There was major construction work being done next door but this was explained to us when we made the reservation and work stopped early enough in the afternoon to be an issue. Our room was spacious and quiet with antiques and a beautiful 4 poster bed. There were trees outside of our large windows and jazz playing on the radio. Although we knew that there was only one bathroom to be shared on our floor when we made our reservations, there was no problem with availability and we had a sink in our room. The shower was antique so water pressure was as strong as expected for fixtures that old. The only issue we had was the smell and scratchiness of the towels and wash cloths. It was almost as if they hadn't been washed between guests. The soaps seemed old and were pretty used up.

The only real positive was the location, which was very convenient for the event I was attending. The hotel itself appeared run-down and poorly maintained. There were holes in the walls near the electrical outlets, and there was an awkward empty space where it looked like furniture had been removed from the wall without any repairs or touch-up paint being done. Overall, the room looked neglected and far below what I would expect from a Marriott property. Another odd issue was the refrigerator being located under the bathroom sink, which seemed very unusual. To make matters worse, it had a strong unpleasant odor. Customer service was equally disappointing. When we arrived to check in, the front desk associate was busy stocking shelves and paid no attention to us. He then stopped to have a conversation with another staff member while we waited. At no point did he acknowledge us or simply say, "I'll be right with you." A little communication and courtesy would have gone a long way. Based on the condition of the room and the lack of attentive service, this stay did not meet the standards I associate with Marriott hotels. I would not choose to stay here again.

Great location and very walkable in the neighborhood. Cons: The room was... alright. I've stayed in many Aloft properties so I know what to expect (it's a limited service brand and that's fine!) The shower didn't have great water pressure, nor was there anywhere to put my own products (provided shampoo, body wash and conditioner in dispensers on the wall). Thankfully it was a quick stay, but not sure I would have been able to give my hair a good wash in this. The AC blew right on my bed. If I had it off, the room was stuffy. But blowing on me directly was uncomfortable, too. Net net, it served the purpose, but I didn't love it.
