As the support and familiarity grows, I see I'm Positive Inc. as innovating the landscape for this type of organization and I am excited to see all they accomplish.

Their mission is to promote the preservation of and enhancement of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. I have lived in Nevada most of my life and have been enjoying the beauty of Red Rock Canyon since I was a young girl. I remember when no one even knew about this incredible place so this was really a private playground for me. I decided last year that I needed to give back to this place that has always brought me so much joy and peace. I began to volunteer out at Red Rock Canyon and began to meet many of the officers of this organization. What Friends of Red Rock provides are the volunteers, providing education to the public, educational field trips for kids, conservation efforts and fundraising. They have created a dedication walkway at the visitors center where many have purchased and donated tiles with remembrances of family members and people that just love our Red Rock Canyon. An annual membership meeting is held once a year and they also hold an annual Volunteer Recognition ceremony once a year. When volunteering there are many options to choose from. I enjoy Trail Monitoring which consists of me hiking the trail looking for any obstacles that might be blocking the trail as well as picking up garbage, cleaning graffiti(my biggest annoyance), and any thing else that affects the trail. There is also taking care of the Desert Tortoises we have out in the habitat. This job consists of ensuring the tortoises have enough water, feeding them, checking their burrows and in the summer giving them baths. Canyon Clean Ups are scheduled often and consists of many of us coming together to clean up different areas of the canyon. Working the front desk offers a chance to meet hundreds of people that come to visit from all over the world and giving them advice on hiking trails as well as completing the scenic drive offering points of interest. Statistically speaking Friends of Red Rock Canyon has - *contributed $2.4 million in direct financial aid to support Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. *provided $8.7 million in equivalent volunteer hours to maintain Red Rock. * supports hundreds of volunteers participating in in trail maintenance, waste clean up and graffiti removal. * staffs the information desk at Red Rock Visitors Center and assists 750,000 visitors a year. *protects wildlife , birds, and plant life throughout the conservation area, including tortoises and pollinators. The list goes on and on of this groups accomplishments. This is truly a great group of people to work with who really care about this natural wonder we have in our backyard. I am very proud to be a part of and work with this organization as well as making new friends.

In the intervening years, I have…read morevolunteered with Freinds in a variety of areas: newsletter, cultural resources, Visitor Center desk volunteer, the tortoise habitat, and special program days. I have found the group to be my best source of making friends when I moved to this new city from 2,300 miless away. The Frienda group is active in helping support the Bureau of Land Management in the protection of our wonderful Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Friends has a variety of programs available for members to volunteer. In addition to the ones with which I have helped, there is the Canyon Clean Up Group, and there is always a need for desk volunteers at the Visitor Center. If you don't have the ability to volunteer with Friends, joining Friends is a help. Annual membership is $25 for a single membership. For that, you will be helping the group and you will also receive the newsletter of the group published 3 times a year. Membership has it privileges. This is a super organization, and I'm glad I found it when I moved here.

I want to warn everyone about a newer system called Real Pageants, based in Las Vegas, Nevada, but…read moreexpanding to California and Tennessee. This pageant is a scam, full of fraud, disorganization, and ran unfairly. Here are my complaints. The state director committed fraud by stealing advertising money that was meant for a state program book. Those advertisers paid to have their ads in this book for everyone in attendance to see. There was no program books at all during the entire pageant weekend. Yet she awarded a most ads sold title. I sold ads. These sponsors will not trust buying ads to help these girls in the future since they were lied to and received no public exposure for their business. The state director also stole money from the contestants and their families/friends by offering a people's choice award. It was posted on Pageant planet and money/votes were rolling in. She never mentions it again, and no people's choice award was given. The directors had their own children competing for the State titles. It was public knowledge who all of the directors and their children were. There was never any mention of them competing prior to the pageant to address any parents concerns. Of course, those children were crowned the state royalty. 4 out of 7 titles were awarded to the directors children. The age divisions were clearly laid out, yet she had older girls competing in the younger divisions. (These girls were directors kids as well). There was not a single time during any discussion, prep talks, the rules/paperwork, or anywhere that allowed for older girls to fallback into a younger division. Of course, these girls were the winners. Keeps trying to have my review removed.

Nothing is perfect especially when it's new. At the state pageant each contestant was supposed to…read morereceive a program handbook. We all sent in pictures and some people sold ads. Unfortunately, the director had been scrambling around two weeks prior getting everything together, taking care of her daughter who had surgery and was in a wheel chair and she and her husband rescued a teen trapped in his car that was on fire and they had to go get checked out. Not one parent asked or complained about not getting a program because the director had communicated with each of us about everything that had been going on and honestly I didn't care about a program.The pageant only consisted of the contestants and a few of their family members so even if we didn't get the programs that week the director has all of our addresses and phone numbers to send a copy and the same eyes would see the advertisements.There was no scam and it wasn't intentional. I had the opportunity to have my oldest daughter be chosen for an appointed royalty title as an ambassador for Real Pageants for it's 1st year. Also appointed was 3 of the director's daughters & a few other girls. When it came time for state, I knew how many titles and how many contestants it was. All the girls did a great job and either way some would win a title and some wouldn't. If I recall, before any title was announced, the director gave one of the ambassador titles to one of her daughter's. At first I was upset because it meant that one of the contestants wouldn't have a title. After everything was explained, and another child was also given an appointed title who didn't compete nor is related to the director, I understood what was happening and I was okay with that. However, there were many positives: crowns, sashes, crown boxes were top notch and carefully chosen for both royalty groups plus the new group received beautiful custom garment bags, each family gifted the royalty girls who worked hard all year, there were several events each month which allowed the girls and us parents to bond and become a family, and so much more. We did so many community service projects that my 6 year old developed compassion for those in need and she influenced her 5 year old sister to get involved. All rules for the pageant were online, Facebook, or sent via text message. The director had Facebook lives where we as parents could ask questions and we also had her phone number.The good outweighs the bad and the bad is really an isolated incident that could have easily been fixed with a little communication. Also, the judges were not aware of who was who and didn't know any contestants so their scoring was based on the contestants performance. My girls will compete in this system and hopefully be royalty again until they are done doing pageants or age out.

They are empathic, impact oriented, and shared a deep dive into the nonprofit world here in Southern Nevada, especially as a comparison to other markets with a similar population base. They are a huge connector and shared how we as members of the community can share our knowledge to give back on a board. There are so many ways we can use our professional skills to strategically advise local nonprofits. I'm also excited to learn more about fundraising and grant writing! During the orientation, I was pleasantly surprised that nonprofits I was familiar with and peers I knew were there, in addition to learning more about other organizations that play important roles here in the Southern Nevada community!
