Many people who shop in Old Town Pasadena focus on the stores easily accessible from the main street, Colorado. However, some of the shops off the main drag, such as the ones on Holly Street, are unique and fascinating. The two Retreats do share merchandise in common. You will find a bevy of delightful greeting cards, jewelry and candles at both. However, I would strongly encourage you to visit both shops, because each has some items that you won't find at the other location. It was at this shop that I first saw the owner's, Diane, artwork on display. She's made a significant collection of gorgeous, shimmering mandalas. I remember the first time I saw them a couple year ago and I was quite impressed. Since then, you will see more of her mandalas at both Retreat locations, as well as some of the pieces that evolved from her work with these pieces of sacred geometry. Like the other Retreat, this is an excellent gift shop. My stationary drawer is positively overflowing with cards I've bough here. I love shopping at Retreat because I always find something, small or large, that's just right for a friend of mine. Whenever I look through the cards that I've found here I get excited for the right time to send a particular card to a particular friend or family member. It is very easy to find something for any budget. I've found so many fun trinkets, amusing coasters and clever devices to have around the house. And all of these things were around twenty dollars or less. The jewelry, of course, is going to be a bit more pricey, but I feel you are definitely paying for quality. The staff on duty have always been nothing but helpful and friendly. I always enjoy chatting with whoever is minding the store at the moment. Definitely recommend.

Wow, this is no ordinary gift store…read more There are quite a few shops selling home wares, cards, candles and other gift-y items on Mission Street in South Pasadena. This place, however immediately stands out. When I passed by the store the first time I was struck by a collection of headwear: a beaded cap from the Congo and a hat from the Miao people of China and Southeast Asia. I'm an anthropologist, so I was hooked. This store has an incredibly curated collection: folk altars and santos from Latin America, bronze Buddhist statues and jewelry from around the world. The owner is quite a world traveler and it shows in her collection. Definitely a place for the culturally curious. Along with the numerous artifacts are small gifts: some wonderfully fragrant soaps (my favorites were rose geranium and patchouli/sandalwood), beeswax candles and some interesting kitchenware. People might find some items pricy...however, having done some research, most things are very reasonably priced for the quality. Definitely recommend.

But I'm on a new mission for more rings, and I had time to kill, so I stepped in anyway and was really pleasantly surprised! This store is really great! There's several different altars, each with its own unique theme going on. They are really quite different from each other, and while several of them weren't my style, all of them were worth looking over, and there's clearly a lot of thought put into the design and layout. The store person was SUPER friendly, turns out she does make a lot of the jewelry herself, while the store owner makes a lot of designs. You can follow them on IG @ravenapothecary but when I glanced through the feed, it doesn't give you a good sense of all you could get in the store. However, I was told that you can order online (DM them) and request virtual tours where they show you the jewelry. I ended up buying one ring, it was at a really great price point, and I now have this store bookmarked in case I'm ever in the neighborhood again, I would definitely make this a regular stop-in to check the inventory. This store was a joy to browse through! It's one of the most organized and clean stores I've been to, with a stellar collection to boot. Art, pottery, antiques - there will be something that fits your style! I picked up two pieces of handmade studio pottery and a collector's edition of a great book. However, I would consider this more generally a gift shop, because you can find a wide variety of items. müsh had a charming collection of woodcut-style cards for sale, one which I grabbed for a friend. I also spent quiet a bit of time looking at their interesting jewelry collection, including a parure of silver/brass and garnet jewelry. They cary quite a bit of jewelry featuring silver and semi-precious gems. There were also a number of geodes that were set and ready to use as objet d'art in your home, including citrine and amethyst. There was also a variety of paintings for sale: this place has a lot of things for home decor, especially for such a small shop. Definitely worth a stop in Silverlake.

It also has quite a bit of home-ware, porcelain and kitchen-gadgets. Some sections can really pull you in, like old back issues of Times Magazines or other periodicals. Hodgson's is a great place to explore for an hour or so to find something unique or special for a friend or for your own home. Price-wise it's middle-of-the-road, not dirt cheap, but not super-expensive either. Worth a visit. Keep in mind that this place is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I'm talking about specifically this is over 45 years of family owned - local business in South Pasadena, just happened Jap-American " Op Shop" sitting there and a lot of peeps passing by and no one really notices it including me. One Sunday Afternoon ( Nope, it's not a noir film title),  I walked in this store and have met a generous kind person called Lisa. She didn't even know  YELP exists and barely uses any social media. All the juicy Japanese stuffs there and fortunately, I've got a German made reading glass for under 10 bucks. There's a reason why God sends martial goods and certain people to cross the path if you're in good-deeds. A generational family business store in South-Pass and in need of survival and keep going for the next decade, we need to shop LOCALs. Community is vital in our culture, and can provide a sense of belonging, support, and opportunities for learning and growth for every single American in Murica. That's how we made America great again. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the moment I arrived. During posted business hours, there was only a handwritten "back in a few" note on the door. After waiting about 20 minutes, the employees casually returned eating popsicles and never once acknowledged or greeted me when I entered the store. I attempted to engage and asked about inventory, but the staff were extremely unhelpful and seemed completely uninterested in assisting customers. On top of that, much of the vintage merchandise was heavily worn beyond what I would consider fair used condition, yet priced far above market value for the quality. Sadly, the lack of professionalism and poor customer service alone are enough to keep me from returning.

Unfortunately had a bad experience here a couple weeks ago and probably won't ever return…read more The most unhelpful and unfriendly store associates work here - when customers walk in, they hardly say hi nor take their eyes off of their phones. In my particular case that left a bad taste in my mouth was I wanted to purchase some cute rings which were quite affordable - they were $2 each. But when I went up to the register, I was told that the minimum amount for a card purchase was $10, which I did not meet. (I picked out 3 rings for a total of $6) I also did not have any cash on me. I then proceeded to look in all the nooks and crannies of the store to see if I could find something else so I could meet the minimum. Mind you, I was a very committed customer that was wanting to purchase items! However, I couldn't find anything else and got zero help or attention from the workers. I think what would have helped is if they at least asked what I was looking for or help directed me to some places to look. So I then just walked out without purchasing anything and took my business to another vintage store down the street!
