Do yourself a favor and find your desired furniture or lighting elsewhere. I bought a small Louis Poulsen ceiling lamp from DWR that I subsequently found cheaper at Lumens.com. They had free shipping whereas DWR charged $99 to ship. DWR would not price match the difference. And then they wanted to charge me a 10% restocking fee for trying to return the product, preventing me from capturing the savings. Learn from my mistake and shop elsewhere. read more

My son will be working at home and needed a solid and comfortable chair to work the 8-10 hours each day, as a remote opportunity allows him to conduct business through the internet, and only seldom needs to travel to work. To learn more of the options of available seating options, this was a nice place to try out the many types of chairs for ergonomics, comfort styling and gaming. It is still too early to make a decision, but a test drive is more important than anything when considering how long the human body has to remain in certain positions over the workday. read more

Honestly had such a weird experience here. I think because I wasn't dressed up and look very young I didn't get the best service. I went in for a Herman Miller chair because I desperately needed a good office chair for work. I got directed where to go, but a salesperson didn't really come with me. Fine, I just tested out which one I wanted and then went back to the salespeople to place an order. The guy answered my questions well, but his recommendations were bad. He assumed I wanted the cheapest version of the chair (you can customize it and the more just add adjustable parts the more expensive it becomes). Sort of insulting. Wait it gets worse. I told him I wanted to see if there's any in store locations that might have it for pick up. Nope which is fine; I could wait a week or two for delivery. So he's on their website trying to figure out when I can get the chair asap instead of waiting several weeks for a certain model. He said he could find one, but expected that he might be able to in the coming days (what difference that would make...I have no idea). So he said he's going to email me an order so the price the chair was at would be locked in because Herman Miller was going to raise the price the next day. He gets my email, but doesn't send it to me then and there. I never get it so I just go on the Herman Miller website myself and ignore his advice to avoid the customizable upgrades. I build my dream chair and it was able to be shipped immediately. Also out of curiosity, I checked the Herman Miller website the next day and the sale on the website was still going on. So in summary, sales guy I guess thought I was too broke for a nicer model, offered me subpar service, and was wrong about when the sale ended. Blessing in disguise I guess because I found what I wanted without him. Can't speak for their other furniture, but for Herman Miller, I would just go in store to try the chairs and then buy it yourself off the website. read more

I had spent weeks researching for the perfect ergonomic chair and thought it would be smart to not take the risk and buy one online based on its reviews only to have to disassemble it and ship it back which led me to stop by this Pasadena location. We were greeted by Dakin who was super knowledgable and not pushy at all. My intention was to just to introduce my booty to its perfect match in real life. A friend recommended the Herman Miller Cosm so I came here to compare that model against the Embody and to also revisit the not so impressive Aeron that I used in my twenties just one more time! I wasn't planning to buy anytime soon, I was just test driving. Welp! My friend's testimonials weren't fake, it took me a quick 10 seconds to determine that the COSM was the one! Dakin was not around the following day I placed the order so Marcos handled it for me. I literally have nothing to say except my experience in that shop and the exchanges via email/phone was extremely pleasant. Zero complaints except the imitation Purell they offered their customers that weekend. Maybe they wanted to maintain their customers perception of the store but they tricked us with their tequila smelling sanitizer which I thought was hilarious because we had an authentic bottle in our car. The man who picked up the phone in the West Hollywood location was rude and cocky. I actually ended up spending the rest of the day in that area and we were potentially going to purchase it from there because it was closer but decided to give the business to Pasadena, thanks to Dakin. Weeks later, the chair was delivered although I was promised I would get it within 5 business days.. but totally worth the wait. On top of that, my neighbor ended up buying one as well based on her experience with mine and Dakin took good care of her too. We're overworked old ladies with back problems and can't thank Dakin enough for taking such stellar care of us in such dire times. 4.5 stars, but rounding up to 5 for good measure :) I have passed by this store dozens of times while walking around Old Town Pasadena. Their furniture is so interesting and I love so much of it, but I always figured it was super expensive. I was recently doing some shopping for a new desk/office chair since due to COVID, my company has moved all of our employees to working remotely for the remainder of 2020. I've been using an inexpensive executive chair for the past few months but it's been really uncomfortable, so I started doing research on the best desk chairs and discovered Herman Miller and the Aeron chair. I really wanted to try one out and found out they had them on display at the DWR showroom, so I decided to pay a visit the other day! I appreciated that the employees all wore masks and practiced safe + social distancing while in the store! When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by Joshua Gruber who helped me during my entire visit! He showed me all the different variations of the Aerons and pointed out all of the different features, let me sit in a few of them, and also showed me other HM chairs for comparison. I did a lot of research but was so happy to finally sit in one and try it out for myself. He also actually had the Aeron at his desk and said that he really enjoyed it, which was nice coming from someone who uses the chair on a regular basis. He was super thorough with helping me and ended up spending an hour of his time helping me while I took a look at everything! I ended up not buying the chair because employer actually ended up letting me take my chair from our office, BUT I am still highly interested in the Aeron and am still highly considering buying it if I end up getting tired of my company chair / want to really enhance my home desk setup! Whenever I'm ready to purchase the chair, I'm definitely coming to DWR to order it! The only reason why I mentioned 4.5 stars at the beginning of my review was due to the pretty expensive pricing. All of the pieces in this store are really expensive, but you can definitely tell that it's due to the high quality materials and craftsmanship. Accidentally walked into this place after visiting RH few doors down. I heard about this furniture store online. It's one of the very stylish and expensive furniture stores that I know of.... All the furnitures were way too modern for me or they looked very 70s. Personally, they looked like trendy furnitures that I might have to change in few years.... I was looking for furnitures that would last about 10 plus years.... Might be perfect for younger generations and maybe like newlyweds.... Designs were very unique but I think they were way too over priced even at outlet prices. For example, desks were $2000+, sofas $6000+, chairs $500+.... Don't do it! I spent years looking at DWR and the great brands/designers they carry, wishing that I could become a customer. I even met and spoke with their founder and followed his blog for a while. Finally reaching a point when I could justify their high prices and after a lot of research, I purchased many items from them. I am not certain if it was the change of DWR ownership or their brand partners, however these items did not live up to their cost nor the DWR brand expectations. Most arrived with damage or defect. As I paid for the "White Glove" service I expected that there would be no issues.When I reported these problems DWR customer service was non-existant and it wasn't till I fought my way to their regional manager that anything was done. My favorite memory of this experince is after three months of waiting on a replacement to $3k couch which arrived defective, I went in to complain. Their solution was to give me two cotton bags as an apology. These were left over promotional material which they found in the back room. My point is simple. DWR brings great design to awareness and charges a high price for them. My expectations I am paying this cost for the ease of finding these items and the support that DWR will provide. This was not the case, leading me to beleive that we are all better off doing the research and finding this type of furinture from other sources. After all LA has a great market of smaller stores which fill this need and the online resources for Mid-century modern are gettign better all the time. read more

Bought our two Eames chairs here. Very lovely staff. They give you enough space when you first arrive, but when you have questions, they are very thorough with their answers. They had to order the specific Eames chairs that we had wanted, which took considerably longer than we were quoted, (hence the docked star) but once they arrived, they called us immediately and made pick up a breeze. In and out in just a few minutes. My favorite part of this DWR... My fiancé and I work in the arts industry. Sometimes we dress quite nice, and sometimes (mostly) we dress in Converse, jeans, and tshirts. We've been here several times and regardless of how we looked, we were always treated with respect. i purchased the barcelona chair and bench online. the order would not be delivered for another couple months so i naturally tried to cance the order. you'd think that an order that has not been delivered would be easy to cancel. there is no easily available ability to cancel the order online as it was to order am item. i called customer service but the number to camcel the order is a different extension from placing new orders. the waits are extremely long. but to talk to a rep for ordering, there is practically no wait. after finally getting through, i cancelled the order despite being offered additional discount for my troubles. why? because a company that makes it this difficult to cancel and get customer service is not worthy of my business. after cancelling the order i thought i was finally done dealing with dwr. to my surprise, i found out dwr is shipping the bench without chair. why would i buy the barcelona bench without chair? so again on the phone with customer service. i would like to cancel the order that has failed to be cancelled and not yet shipped. sorry, the rep says. i will have to either decline the delivery or return it after deivery. this whole ordeal has demonstrated to me how a buisness should not be run. i will update if and when i get my final refund. read more

We;ve bought a few things there and the one time we had a delivery issue we called back to the store and our sales person handled it and made the delivery company come back out and properly complete the job. I might not ever afford a sofa or sleeper from this store but I like to visit to try the modern sectionals after I eat at Gyu-kaku. My father used to keep all of my DWR catalogs and I tried to study environmental design at school but my architecture instructors weren't supportive. The chairs are not within reach but I've been procrastinating on buying a Sapien bookcase. The staff keeps their distance while you browse. This is the stuff Ikea tries to rip off. read more

From the classic Noguchi coffee table to George Nelson Sunflower clock, if you have a ranch style/mid century style home, they can never go wrong. - Sales rep at this place LOVE what they do. They are not there to sell you anything. They share the same passion as you do on modern furnitures. You can have a pleasant long conversation with them without buying anything. - Save up and watch for special discounts and floor sample sales. If you know the rep well enough, they will send you discount notices and notify you on floor sample sales. Don't buy cheap imitation out there. Came here about a year ago, sort of looking to buy an Eames Lounge Chair. I love walking into DWR and just looking at their chairs and lamps. I mean it's so damn expensive, but they're all a work of art. While there, I was helped out by Kelly, who was pretty nice. Shoot, I'd be nice too if every potential customer would be spending close to at least $1000 on each item. I told her that I was interested in the Eames LCW, and she informed me that there was a 15% sales on Eames things a week from the day I stopped by. The nice thing was that even though I was early, she would take down my order and charge me a week later, so that I'd be able to take advantage of the sale price. As far as this particular location goes, it's on one of the side streets of old town Pasadena. Not a huge store, but also not a closet sized shop like some of the other ones I've been to. The after service that I was provided was pretty exceptional. I was followed up with some calls and emails that checked up on me to make sure my chair worked out perfectly. We put in the order for a chair and they promised us that we would get it within 4 weeks. They charged my credit Card. When we didn't receive the chair after 4 weeks we contacted the store and they said the paper work shows it was sent out but the tracking number on file didn't match our order. So they didn't know where our chair was. So we canceled the order. They did not credit our charge so I had to contact my credit card company and despite the charge. After we contacted the customer services they eventually credited our credit card. read more

As one other review noted, the people at DWR give you the space & time to look around, sit, twirl, and bounce. Ty helped me choose an office chair & he was patient, kind, and knowledgeable. For those reasons I would shop here again, that and the fact that the atmosphere is so opposed, in a good way, to the big box stores. The delivery, too, was faultless; the guy even took away our old office chair & smiled while doing it. Amazing. We love our Setu chair and would highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you have back problems or move from office to office: it is light as a feather and hugs your back like no other chair. Although their furniture is first rate, the whole experience of shopping at Design Beyond Reach left us cold. The sales staff act as though they are doing you a favor by selling you their precious furniture. For certain they are pleasant, but in a condescending manner. They have nothing in LA so you pay extra for delivery from Kentucky. On top of that they charge extra if you want "White Glove" delivery. Don't bother, these guys just dump the furniture and leave. I love the furniture that we purchased at DWR. The issue that I have is with their sales and management team. We purchased our furniture with no mention that it was going to be in their semi-annual sale at 15% off in a month after purchase. They did give us 10% off due to the size of the order. Other stores in the same business (Italia 2000 or Bedfellows) always made sure that we were aware of an upcoming sale and either honored the sale price or have you wait and purchase during the sale. When asked about a 5% adjustment, they offered store credit. I declined the store credit and called my brother to convince him to not order his 2 chairs from DWR. I also will not furnish my 2nd home (under construction) through DWR. read more

As part of a recent home remodel we went to DWR for our dining chairs. Polly was a great help and really rolled up her sleeves to make sure we got what we wanted. We wanted Knoll Spark side chairs but with a non-standard variety of upholstered seat pads. Came in around 2:30 PM on Friday. There were two male employees on their computers when I came in - neither of them looked up or said hello. My friend and I were the ONLY people in the store and looked at every area over the course of 15 minutes or so. Neither employee offered to help or answer questions that we had. One of them received a phone call while we were there and was able to answer the call but not help us. Absolutely terrible service. If you are looking for nice looking furniture, though, they do have a nice selection...good luck trying to purchase anything though. read more

Hi, this is going to sound a little weird but I'm rating this store without even buying anything. See, I was looking for a new office chair because my back has been just killing me lately and I thought maybe I should look into getting a new one. I had my eye on the Humanscale Freedom chair and they had one. I made an appointment with Ty to come in and take it for a test drive so-to-speak. I walked in and he immediately greeted me and took me in the back of the showroom where the office chairs were. I sat down on the chair in question (a $2300 chair BTW) and it felt pretty good. As I was sitting there Ty had asked my why I was looking for a chair. I told him that my back was hurting a lot and he looked at me in the chair and said "I can sell you a chair, but that's not the problem. It's your posture. I can show you how you should look in a chair and I'llbet that takes away most of your problems." Wow, what? You are actually trying NOT to sell me?!! I couldn't believe it. How cool is that? So, he did exactly that. Sat with me for like 15 mins and showed me how to adjust my Aeron Chair at home to give it a try. Offered me a water and sent me on my way. Folks, this just doesn't happen these days with so many people and establishments hard selling you, upgrading you, super-sizing you. He impressed me and gained me as a referral source if I should ever hear of someone needing some modern/office furniture. Thanks Ty, nice to know there are still people like you the world! The wifey and I have been shopping around for some home and office furniture and decided to give Design Within Reach a try. The store has some very nice modern and retro modern pieces spread through out a decent sized show room. Prices seemed very fair for the quality and design of the pieces. In the back right hand corner of the store was a section 4-6 high end ergonomic office chairs. We were in the market for some new office chairs...while the quantity to check out was somewhat low the quality was very high. The chairs were all lines up next to each other with the brand and make clearly labeled. Service was well above average with a sales associate introducing herself and handing us bottles of water as we entered. She periodically checked in with us, just enough to answer our questions but daintily not enough to make us feel smothered. Overall great experience. read more

Most consumers who go into Design Within Reach don't realize that what they're seeing in the showroom is just a very small percentage of what the company actually carries. DWR represents not only Knoll and Herman Miller, but also Vitra, Poulsen, USM and a variety of other furniture and fixture fabricators. There are many , many pieces that are not on their website or in the showroom. You need a good sales rep like to guide you. I am a designer located in the greater Los Angeles area and I have had the pleasure of bringing many projects into Dakin Snyder at the Pasadena location. Dakin has come through for me repeatedly in sourcing the perfect pieces for my clients. He is very patient when I ask him about all the various fabric and finish options. There are so many options that are available, but that are not shown. He has been instrumental in digging deep into what DWR has to offer. He has extensive knowledge of the history of contemporary furniture and of pieces that are still being manufactured. I went there 2 days ago while i was in Old Town Pasadena. Everything in there are so nicely designed and 'without reach'. The staffs there are really friendly and helpful. The don't bug you around and just let you cruise around the store unless you needed help. The lady that was helping me out was so nice that she even told me that there is going to be a sale of 15% off on November 27 on couple pieces of furniture in the store.
