The Slightly Longer Version: This urban grocery store reminds me a lot of The Kitchen Table of days gone by (in Toronto). It has a small amount of groceries and has baked goods from local suppliers as well as prepared ready-to-eat foods. They had some locally brewed kombucha too. When you walk into the store, the first thing you notice is all the British imported food and snack items.. Reminds me a lot of my childhood and I usually buy something for nostalgia sake. Right beyond that is beverage display case with all sorts of drinks you'd rarely see elsewhere. I especially enjoy their local and import ginger beer selection, as well as Ribena. Beyond that the store is a mixture of exotic cheeses, excellent produce, a deli, health food aisles and the British butchery. This butchery is especially known for its Nova Scotia lamb, which is the best I've bought anywhere around here. The beef steaks are a close second. Needless to say, due to the nature of the products sold here, the prices are exorbitant.. I keep Pete's as a treat to go buy a few luxury food items if I haven't entirely blown my food budget for the month. If my budget hasn't been blown yet, it's sure to be so once I'm done at the Frootique. While many of the items are quite unique, there are many food items that are..items which can be purchased at your regular grocery store for half the price (ie. many of the dairy products). I also think the space the store occupies is much too small... you constantly feel like you're in a traffic jam trying to navigate the narrowly jam packed aisles, and always a hair breadth away from knocking things over.. the store is so cramped, I picture knocking something over as having a domino effect.. dropped a bag of chips?...there goes the whole aisle. The check out staff are fast, friendly and on the ball with keeping registers open. I don't necessarily see this as good customer service, though... since the store is so cramped, if long lines were to form then customers in line to pay would take up half the retail space (I've seen this happen here more than once). I definitely recommend this place, though, even if just to window shop. You might discover something new on every visit.

Then I remember I don't have to and head to the Bulk Barn. Great selection of just about everything under the sun and reasonable prices. Beware the candy aisle(s) though; once you enter it's difficult to leave without your arms laden with pounds of junk food. (Did I say pounds? I meant kilograms.) They also carry some specialty and gluten-free products that can be difficult or impossible to find in mainstream grocery stores. I must work on remembering to make the Bulk Barn my first stop when grocery shopping to save myself some money and frustration.

I asked him if I could just come in and grab the one item I needed, he told me no. Meanwhile there was 6 other people still in the store walking around. I understand that due to weather stores close early but to close 20 minutes early gives off vibes that this employee just wanted to go home and it was not a weather factor, especially considering the snow fall was not even bad.

The most prominent being their samosas. Oh, their samosas. Whether you're getting their chicken, veggie or feta/spinach, they are all good. The feta/spinach samosa is still relatively new but amazingly delicious. Some places (such as Coburg Coffee) offer it with hummus. Not a natural combination in my mind but it works so well. SOL (hmm.. not the best abbreviation) also provide a variety of paninis to cafes such as the Wired Monk. And, of course, baked goods like cookies. Hm... cookies. They apparently also make pizzas? I'm not as familiar with that. All in all, they make great food that you've probably already eaten and enjoyed.

Due to health and safety regulations. Which doesn't make sense to me, since I'm scooping product into the bag, not dipping it into a bin. You know what I can do? Who knew there were enough molds to line a very long wall and so many different chocolate options to fill the many molds. I have gone here to buy boxes of chicken breasts. They do have a great selection of the everyday stuff, nothing special. It's somewhat like Costco, just much smaller and more food-oriented. You can really find some amazing deals here. I can see why small restaurant and store owners like to shop here since a lot of stuff is in bulk. It doesn't have a lot of frills, so don't expect it to be like Sobeys, but if you know what you want when you get there you're bound to be impressed.
