ABOVE & BEYOND! My hot tub quit working and I visited a hot tub store in Chattanooga who said they outsource repair work and the tech is backed up a month. I visited Great Backyard Knoxville and Jonathan in the service dept took the time to break down a pump to show me where my potential problem was. I returned home, FaceTimed with him for an EXTENDED period of time twice while trying to trouble shoot. He didn't give up on me or my hot tub. Customer service is not dead!! he was so knowledgeable and patient. He turned a frustrating situation on the edge of my DIY comfort zone into a rewarding experience. I was amazed at his ability to diagnose problems without physically laying hands on the pieces and parts. Back this year since we moved to a new house of course the wife had to have a new Christmas Tree as our old one would not fit. They have one of the biggest selections of high end good quality trees here. So many types and sizes to choose from. They even have the option to install and fluff for you. After a few visits we picked our tree and took it home. Positive it will make the new house for Christmas. Everyone else told us they couldn't do anything until next year but these guys came out and measured, ordered and installed our rare type of pool liner in record time. Although the prices were a bit high, the showroom/sales service was outstanding. However, the service STOPS as you leave the store & you are on your own for installation. Great Backyard Place only has a single pool installer who: - Does not return phone calls or texts. - Does not get in a hurry and does not mind making you wait. We waited weeks just for guidance on how to prep the site for installation. (Our install location required lots of prep work.) - Has developed a system where he takes a good portion of the installation costs but passes most of the work to sub-contractors. - Is quick to offer to "show you his taillights" if you don't want to play his game or disagree with his plan. - Has you sign a document saying that Great Backyard Place is absolved of all responsibility for the installation. I guess the Great Backyard Place was truly absolved because I did not even receive a phone call from the Great Backyard Place to ask how I liked the pool, were there any problems or is there anything we can do to help. My review is 100% accurate and probably too lenient, but just go to the BBB webpage to confirm issues with installation and the Great Backyard's approach to fixing installation problems. This is a really nice place to browse above-ground pool options. Low key and knowledgeable sales staff, big charts on the wall with all the prices, and everyone was friendly and helpful. We got a great pool at a good price. The site preparation and the experienced installation were excellent (thank you Reno & Jonathan!) It does take a few weeks for the pool to arrive and be installed, probably depends on the season. We ordered it late -March and it was installed by June 1. You get an instructive, individual one hour briefing on setting up the pool filters and chemicals (thanks, Bree!) They have lots of YouTubes explaining about their pools, too. read more

My wife and I placed an order for a hot tub in August of 2020. We were told there would be a wait and our hot tub would begin production in February, 2021, 6 months later. I realize that Covid19 has slowed production throughout the nation, but here we are 9 months later and still nothing. The staff has not reached out to us since we went into the store. In February we called and they said 4-6 weeks. 4-6 weeks went by and crickets....so we called again and we were told 4-6 weeks. So, here we are, 9 months after walking into the store and nobody has called, no updates, nothing from this business. My wife called again today and after being given the run around on the phone, she was passed off to someone named Dillon. Dillon told her 4-6 weeks again, and we were free to cancel it if we'd like. We are now looking at a wait time of 10 1/2 months. I feel that the customer service at this business is in dire need of improvement. If they cannot provide us with the hot tub we ordered 9 months ago at the agreed upon price, we should be given another option, not strung along for what is now getting closer and closer to a full year. Extremely poor management (John), Two different occurrences, ordered parts for my pool and my hot tub. The hot tub took 9 months to get the parts and the pool parts never came. After three months of trying to get a hold of John, I went to the store and got the order numbers for the parts I needed. I told the parts person the story about John and he said . We bought our house with a pool about a year ago. Since then, we've gone to GBYP for all our supplies and service, mostly because they installed the pool and the previous owners recommended them. This spring we discovered a leak in our pool liner and had them replace the liner. I was BLOWN AWAY by the level of service we got. It was the middle of COVID lockdown, and there ended up being lengthy delays on getting the liner. Their service department 1) did not make excuses, 2) kept us informed of what was happening and 3) gave us an incredible discount because of the length of delay. They truly made things right, even when they didn't have to. Liner installation was flawless and we're loving it. They've got my business for good. read more

After using them for 15 years to open and close my pool, they have decided to no longer serve their faithful customers if they live outside of Knox County. Not sure which brainiac came up with this decision but they could have stopped accepting new customers from outside the county and continue to serve those of us that have been their go to customers for years. read more

I recently bought a new pump, filter and liner to be installed. The problem is Bill who says he has 30 yrs. of experience in installing pool liners doesn't know what he is talking about. I do have a deck half way around my pool and asked him repeatedly if I need to remove the deck boards and he says no, if they need to come out he will remove them Well he broke off all the top caps by the deck, ,mind you there were some that were broken but still useable. The ones he broke off are not useable and also ones that should have been screwed back in were just placed on top of the pool rails. He said they couldn't screw them back in because they would break. Funny thing is I was able to screw them in. I can't even replace them because they don't make them anymore. What a shame the way they do business, left all their mess for me to clean up, but took all the screws. Never will do business with them again. One thing I will say is Luke and Alec did a great job putting the pump and filter in. Too bad Bill doesn't take some tips from them on how to do a good job. read more

Just moved with new pool during pandemic and went here for all supplies (1st and last). Of course we bought wrong size hose but couldn't take back in time of theIr silly 14 day policy. So, a $25 hose they wouldn't exchange will cost them a lot more money if future earnings after we spent $300 dollars there. Not to mention the manager rude to my wife. If there was an option for zero stars this place would definitely be given that rating. My wife and me went to them on a Saturday inquiring about a quote on an in-ground pool. We were told we would have to leave our number and they would call back. The next Saturday they had not called us, so we called and asked and they had us come to the store. We told them up front we would be a CASH paying customer. We were told we would have to pay a $500 deposit to receive a quote, which we did, and were told they would call us Monday or Tuesday. By Wednesday we had to call them, and were given a run-around and that it would be early the next week before they could schedule the quote. We had not heard from them by the Wednesday of the next week. When I called and asked them when we would receive our quote, I was told they would just refund our money. How do these people stay in business treating customers like this?? Absolutely the WORST customer service I have ever seen. Stay away from this place unless you want to be treated like a second class citizen. Quality pools will now be building our pool. read more

I used to buy all my pool chemicals there. That changed when I accidentally bought the wrong PH product. I needed PH plus not negative. All of their pool chemicals are in " the pool place" containers. When I realized my mistake, I went back to exchange it without my receipt. The manger would not do an even exchange for me!! The containers are labeled " the pool place" ... So obviously they were purchased as his store!! Never went back! read more

So frustrating to deal with... The furniture seems high quality, when it does finally arrive, but the Great Backyard Place lacks anything resembling customer service. Our initial order was well over $5k worth of patio furniture and it took 4-6 weeks to arrive. When it did, our tables were the wrong color and our pillows were the wrong shape and size. A simple mistake, but you'd think they would have caught the errors before delivering the furniture. Apparently they don't have that level of quality assurance. When you call the store they're always "with another customer", even the managers. They never call you back, ever. We finally got things reordered and about a month later got what we paid for. We were frustrated multiple times, but moved on. Fast forward about a year and we decided to order the coffee table that matched our set. We ordered it and were told 4-6 weeks... so when 8 weeks came and went we called the store to get an update. The same multi-day phone game happened again. They don't return calls and are always with a customer. So, we resorted to driving up to the store and as you'd guess, they're miraculously available. The manager said he'd look into it "first thing Monday" but that too came and went and we had no call. We called and left several messages and finally got thru to Samantha, the sales person and she said they'd put a rush order in and they'd call us back the next week with an update. After a few weeks went by we got frustrated again and after finally tracking them down on the phone they said the manufacturer was scheduled to paint the furniture later that week and it "may" be shipped within a week or two. We immediately cancelled the order. We have no more patience for "maybe's" or doing business with The Great Backyard Place. Beware. Way too frustrating, no quality control, no respect for customers seeking call-backs, and no follow through. Dealing with this company makes me want to pull my hair out. read more

This outfit is awful! Please learn from our mistake. We paid cash for pool and extended warranty and used their recommended people to install it. The install people came up in two beater cars with no equipment. They borrowed our tools and left a mess in our yard. We had a tug of war all summer long with disputing the charge and with holding payment until they came out in the FALL and leveled the pool which was three inches higher on one side than the other! Now when we tried to open this year the thing is leaking. Duane at the Maryville store is not concerned and Ann, is the rudest individual ever to depend on customers for a pay check. John and the rest of the bunch in Knoxville are not concerned with service after the sale. You'll rue the day you do business here. When we started to put our Christmas tree up this year, there were numerous bulbs and strands of lights out in the center section of the tree. My wife called them on a Saturday and we were told that we had to bring the tree in on a weekday only. We took the tree to the store on November 2, 2020 and they could not give us an estimated date when it would be repaired. We called a couple of times, but we got no answers. Exactly two week later, I received a call from John informing me of the problem with the tree and the cost to repair. We do not live in Knoxville but have supported this business and spent a lot of money through the years. Yesterday, we drove to this business and picked up our tree, only to get home and see that nothing had been repaired on the tree. My wife called and spoke to John and needless to say, she was upset. Today, we were sitting in their parking lot before they opened and approximately ten minutes later, we were told that the tree was repaired. After getting the tree home, we found numerous lights out which had to be replaced. Today, this business lost a long time customer and I would warn anyone that is thinking about doing business with this company to stay away, their customer service is non-existent. Very bad attitude and I will never use them again. I had The Pool Place close my pool last fall and had during some pool repairs this month discovered that it was closed incorrectly. I called and asked for the manager to let them know and expected him to come out to look and possibly repair the damage. John Pearl got on the line and identified himself as the manager. He denied responsibility and interrupted me and talked over me constantly. I understand mistakes happen but a good company stands behind their work. It wasn't even a lot of money we're talking about here. John wanted me to pay them to come and when I resisted, he reluctantly offered to have someone come look at one part only, but not for two weeks. Completely unacceptable in my book. read more

We purchased an inground pool and they selected the contractor to do the installation. $30,000 and two years later we now have a pool that was installed incorrectly and both The Great Backyard Place and the contractor are refusing to back the work in any way. Over the past two years The Great Backyard Place had employees at our house three different times for pool light issues and never identified the true installation error. I purchased an artificial tree from The Pool Place 12/26/12, a little concerned that I would not be using the tree until Christmas the following year, 2013. I thought I had asked all of the right questions to insure my 50% off purchase of still $1050.00 would be a worthwhile purchase. I asked about the lights & if a bulb went out would all the lights stay lit, etc. I was assured by the man who helped me that they would service the tree if I had any problems with the tree no questions asked. That their trees are very high end & they would take care of any problems that could happen to the tree. I had no problems with the tree the following year, 2013. Fast forward to 2014, granted 2 years later but the tree was only used for 1 Christmas @ a price of $1050.00! We put the tree up this year & there are lights out all over the tree, even whole strands of lights out. I changed out the fuses in the strands that were out & they still didn't light. I called the store & had to leave my ph # for the guy to call me back. The next day I called again as the guy I needed to talk to didn't bother to call me back! I was told that my tree would be covered IF my tree did not have cascading lights. When I asked what that was, I was told it is when a bulb burns out & you don't replace it, it makes the rest of the bulbs burn hot & will ruin the strand. You can tell if this is the problem if the bulbs that won't light have black on them. HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW THIS IF WE ARE NOT TOLD THIS BY THE SALESMAN AT THE STORE!!!! When I asked this question of the guy, I was rudely told by him "that is why they come with replacement bulbs" REALLY! What about the bulbs in the center of the tree that you can't see to even know if they are out of not! And with ALL the questions I asked before buying the tree, why was I not told this about the lights & bulbs! I feel complete deceived & lied to by this company & their employees! I would have NEVER spent this kind of money on an artificial tree if I even remotely thought I would only be able to enjoy it for 1 season! BUYER BEWARE, I will no longer be doing business with The Pool Place in any capacity in the future! Wow, I had the very worst customer experience I have ever had at the pool place, and what is worse its not the first time. I recently purchased their top of the line above ground pool and the salesman seemed very nice, but when installation time came everyone that works at the great backyard place became hard to deal with. They hired an excavator and installer the excavator damaged my paved driveway in three places without so much as a I'm sorry he sub-contracted three very interesting people to build the pool who came to me before completion and said they would have the money to drive homw if I did not write them a check before the job was complete. They were extremely unprofessional and when we asked them to explain how to turn the pump on the leader through down a box and said we would learn in pool school...well turns out he was wrong. My wife went to pool school were she was told just to plug up the pump it had no on-off switch. Well we wound up calling an electrician who learned it had a small on-off switch underneath, when I confronted the the Great Backyard place with all these facts I never recieved a "I am sorry for your experience from anybody" to which I called them on and the salesman said "well I was very apoligetic" This is my second experience that has been negative with these folks and it will be my last. read more
