My friend had recommended this place for some good Chinese, and she was right. The place has very nice and beautiful walls with some Chinese art. The two waitress were very nice and smiling, and the owner seemed very polite and happy to have us there. We both ordered the same thing. C-9 I believe the combo number was, and a out of Chinese green tea. The dish, which consisted of honey garlic ribs, sweet and sour chicken balls, chicken fried rice, and an egg roll with real plum sauce, was very delicious, and made both my friend and I very full and satisfied, and the tea was perfect for the meal. I can say that I will again come here, not for the food, but for the very kind staff and owner. Very kindly recommended this restaurant for a nice Chinese food dinner. read more

Had been here many times years ago, but after living away for awhile, I decided to try it for lunch again one day to see if it was still good. Yep. Arrived at about 11:50 to beat a possible crowd, and glad I did. It was already busy at that point in the front section (maybe a dozen tables of various sizes?), so I was one of the first that was put in the furthest back section (maybe ten tables?). Standard 'Chinese restaurant' atmosphere. Relatively casual with random wall decor items, etc. Always quite clean I notice, considering how busy they get especially. This visit I tried the vegetarian Shanghai noodles. Quite a large portion which I didn't think I was going to be able to finish, but did manage to. Spicy enough for the nose to run, but not too hot. For those who aren't familiar, Shanghai noodles are a thick, worm-like noodle (not to be gross with that description, but it's the best analogy I can think of...). I always am a carb addict, so noodles are one of the first things I look for on the menu at all restaurants, regardless of genre. Anyway, I did expect there to be more vegetables than the little bit of shredded carrot and cabbage in this dish, but I wasn't disappointed either. Just noting that this isn't a dish for the health-conscious person, but for the spicy, carb-craving person that I am, it's good. In prior visits years ago, I had often ordered one of their combination plates which I think had fried rice, sweet & sour chicken balls, a chow mein? I remember enjoying that immensely for the freshness, flavor and portion size as well. The vegetable lo mein is good as well, with a bit more veggies than the noodle dishes. I requested mine with some spice, and they got it perfectly. The owner, Patrick, apparently works 364 days a year and only takes Christmas day off. His staff have the same friendly but speedy quality. I kind of get tired just watching them run around. Very efficient. I'd probably order take-out or delivery from here more often if I lived downtown. I will be back for sure whenever I feel like Chinese down town. Simple as that. read more

I've returned here multiple times since my last visit at the suggestion of my co-workers, who RAVE about this place (and rightly so). Theres this extremely rude woman that works there (my co-workers say its the owners wife), but her husband is absolutely lovely and the rest of the staff is too. The food is phenomenal, theres a huge difference in depth of flavor and quality than other Chinese restaurants in the city. If I order from The Great Wall I'm 100% confident the dish I'm getting will be top notch. My favorites are the kung pao chicken and hunan chicken, I also tried the ginger beef which was unreal. Went there again last night, the ginger beef always delivers in flavor! We also tried the veggie spring rolls which were excellent. The roll was very hot and crunchy on the outside and the filling was fresh veggies on the inside that were seasoned with pepper. I have only eaten take out from there, as has my family. Service was great, prompt food serving. The Atmosphere was, I guess authentic, never been farther than Ottawa. THe food was good, sadly cold by the time I was done my chores for the day. Still, no fault on them. We went in there just as Sunday dim sum was ending. Too bad - our timing issue. The food here was all very fresh. There is one problem with that - the meats don't get marinated properly. So the sauces were good, the meat in the sauce was not well seasoned. Curried chicken and broccoli chicken and general tsao's chicken (I know, our kids ordered - I usually get the spicy traditional dishes) Egg drop soup had no real taste but it's because they unused their own chicken stock. Add some salt and pepper and tasted very good. Other than that - their steamed pork dumplings were delicious. Spring rolls were crispy(fresh) yummy. Ordered beef chow mein in our order. The meat was white, clearly chicken. Called to report this and was told that it really was beef as they ran out of their regular beef two days ago. Owner tried to get me to just try it. No interest in white beef on a hot August night. Sent their driver back with a refund, he came back shortly after for the chow mein itself. We refused and he came back again with the owner on his cell so she could demand it back. Will clearly never call back. Why would they want used food? It's in our green bin now. read more

I keep giving this place a second chance because when it was run by Patrick is was one of the best Chinese restaurants in Halifax - now - not so much - the new owner/operator - has changed up the quality of the ingredients, the spicing, the recipes etc and it's now just bland, bad Chinese food. For example, after complaining tonight, I was told by an employee that the spring rolls are now frozen and reheated - uggh - not only that - the meat Spring roll is stuffed with soggy cabbage that gives it an awful taste! This restaurant was a huge success under the ownership of Patrick - it's too bad it's gone down hill. After 15 years of being a loyal customer, I'm sad to say, I won't be returning. read more

I was staying at the radassion across the street and the great wall was advertised in the hotel binder which gives you ideas on where to eat, shop, etc. From the outside it looks like somewhere you wouldn't think would make delicious Chinese food, I was very worried. The restaurant sure did surprise me, the staff were so friendly and helped us out. We were looking for a beef dish and they recommend their house beef, Ginger beef. It was SO good! I'd give them no stars but it's not an option. I will never return to this restaurant and I don't use the word "never" flippantly. My daughter and I have just had the worse experience ever. I have been coming to The Great Wall since the late 80s. A co-worker's husband used to be a chef there and the food was great. I still come but mostly for Dim Sum with my daughter. I've come for lunch but the food is just OK so it's not my go to place for that but the dim sum has always been good. We have tried other places as the dim sum here is only on Sundays and I've been happy to return whenever we could. I'd like to add that we came for a belated Mother's Day event (going when it's not crazy busy). We arrived at a very good time; just minutes after opening and the place was already getting busy. The service was so-so but they were trying so I always give them some slack. Problem though in that others arriving later than us got the same items we ordered before us...but NP we just mentioned we had other items that hadn't showed up and they got them. Now the real issue. Our spring rolls. I don't order them but my daughter does. They looked way over cooked and the skins were dark brown and not golden as you'd expect. She only took one bite and showed me - huge pieces of celery and I mean huge. OK first I've never heard of celery in spring rolls but OK just cut the pieces very small would be my suggestion. I discreetly went to find a server with them in hand. The tables are so close I didn't want to bring attention to my complaint. The young man took what I had to say and said oh yes I see. Some time later we were waiting for our last two items which didn't show until some time and we had to ask - my daughter's favourite was among them. Well sadly here was the real test of this establishment - the Har Gow. She tasted the first one and said it tasted over done, way over done or something wasn't right. I tried one and it tasted like it was frozen or perhaps the shrimp was frozen and had gone past it's prime. I then looked for Patrick and tried to explain that it didn't taste right (again trying to do this at their station and not amongst customers. I should add I've been eating Dim Sum since Calgary when my daughter was 2 and we were lucky enough to know a lovely man that took us before it was even popular for Caucasians, so I know good Har Gow. I went back to my daughter and soon he came to our table, put his hand out and said he had eaten some of what I returned and it was fine (he actually had a half eaten piece in his hand which he wanted me to see) - YUCK who does that? He said there was something wrong with me because they were perfect. I've never had a restaurant owner/manager or server ever tell me my taste buds were a problem. He made a huge scene at our table - something I was trying to avoid for them but OK if that's how you want to do this. Then his wife comes to the table right after that - what are you talking about - they are not frozen, I make them this morning. I said I'm sorry but to me they tasted frozen (I really believe they could've been made fresh but the shrimp was way-old frozen if you know the taste I mean). She yells to me that everyone in the whole restaurant loves them; what wrong with me? Really? Is this happening to us? I said I'm sorry but they don't taste good and she kept on at me; would not stop - and I mean everyone around us was as uncomfortable I think. We picked up our leftover containers and I said we are done; let's go. On the way out Patrick kept verbally attacking me and said I was ruining his reputation (yelling at me by the cash even) said it several times - what?! As my daughter said to him quietly - no sir I think this huge fight you are having with us is what is ruining your reputation. We paid the bill and left. I have never ever had such an experience. I think Patrick and wife should retire and let some young blood in. I'm not sure any business owner would ever treat a customer like this even if they didn't agree with their comments. This is why people don't send stuff back I think, but if it's not good I think a discreet comment (which I did twice) is warranted. You only get better if you know that there are issues. And having worked in the food industry for many years while putting myself thru college I know that the customer is always right and I've had some doozies. A return customer is better than an unhappy one. If this had been handled differently we'd come back - everyone has a bad day or uses inferior products without knowing that they will change the end result. I think the celery as a filler (huge filler) is disgusting and cheap and the shrimp I'd bet on it having been old frozen shrimp used; again I'm thinking cheap old product. Last comment to the wife - don't take things personally, it's business, which is a common statement for many industries. read more

Deep breath... I don't know anything about Canadian Chinese food. I do know that another reviewer's post about this place is just akin to an NYC Chinatown experience is DEAD WRONG. For starters, the wait for service was painful. It took over 20 mins for us to get a menu after being seated. A long wait to take out order followed that and then our food was not all ready at once. There were two women working the front of the house, one,more interested in preening than ensuring service was taking place. The other woman disappeared, leaving a third, seemingly the waitress to take care of the entire room by herself. I can't blame her for anything as she was working alone. This doesn't seem to be an all hands on deck institution. I am hard pressed really to address the food because this wasn't what we expected (i.e. Sweet and sour pork in dough balls). Aside from cultural diversity (Canadian Chinese vs Chinese found in NYC) we found the food to be very sweet and sticky. Nothing was really savory. The rice was gummy and clearly scraped from the bottom of the pot. People living in Halifax may think this is a great place, I don't recommend it for visitors who have an idea of what their dish should be. read more

In fact, I'd rather eat Manchu Wok. It was greasy and tasteless. Mine was lukewarm. Portions were decent sized and price is fine, but I won't go back. I keep on coming back to The Great Wall, not for the ginger fried beef that's always a crowd favourite, don't get me wrong, it's the best in the city. I keep coming back for something a bit different. The duck! With a helpful 48 hour heads up, they will prepare a fantastic feast for four that allows everyone to walk away from the table satisfied with two different styles of duck. The first serving is by far my favourite. Crispy duck pancake! Imagine that juicy duck meat clinging to a crispy/crunchy piece of duck skin. Perfection, I know! Wrap it all up in a rice flour tortilla with a stick of veg.(spring onion, cucumber, celery or carrot) and a drop of Hoisin sauce. Given that you have to assemble these "duck pancakes" yourself, you've got ample time to catch up and see what's new with the rest of the guests in your party. By the time you're all caught up, the second serving should be coming out. The delicious shredded duck stir fry with peppers and onion goes perfectly with a bit of rice and a nice serving of bok choy. Dinner for four with rice and bok choy should run you close to $70, but the duck itself is $58 and well worth it considering you probably don't include duck in your diet as often as you should. read more

What's so great about the Great Wall? Patrick! He's the owner. Always puttering around and is consistently happy and full of energy, no matter what time. We go for dim sum at 11am, he is there happy, or we go for a late dinner after work at 9pm, he is there just as happy. We think he drinks copious amount of tea in the back room. They have won the best Chinese food in the Coast for the last 10 years! So food... I recommend the Ginger Beef. SO good, best I've had and I've tried a lot of places. Treat your self to dim sum on Sundays, it's a traditional Chinese breakfast style (except a little later in the day) with dumplings, rolls, etc. yum yum dim sum! Atmosphere is great, large tables, comfortable chairs and most main dishes are meant for sharing so everyone orders their favorite and share. Tea is OK, I wish they would serve it in infuser baskets and not loose in the pot, it bitters up after awhile if left to sit. No wi-fi, wheel chair accessible. read more

Another great outing at The Great Wall was had today. Our party of 8 was able to grab a table sans reservation, order, get food, eat, and pay all within an hour. This was very important, as our lunch time was at a premium, with some of our party having meetings they had to attend right after. The food came quickly, piping hot, and was very tasty. I've been a big fan of Great Wall for a few years now. And that's saying a lot, because I'm a huge Chinese food snob. I absolutely cannot stand chicken balls, red sauce (what the heck is IN red sauce??) or even ginger fried beef. (Ok, don't hate me). Anyway, I always find food at Great Wall to be plentiful, fresh, authentic and fast. Yes, they have this "secret" menu that's in Chinese. Personally, I can't read it. They gave it to me once, and I ended up having to suck it up and pretend to know what I was pointing to. Since then, they've never offered it to me again. But that's okay, because I think the regular menu is pretty swell. My personal favourite is the Beef and Broccoli. It's not too salty but has plenty of flavour. I also like the Seafood Double Happiness (huge scallops and shrimp). I usually get take-out from here. We used to dine in, but I'm not a big fan of the decor or "feel" of the place. It seems a bit old and kitschy. But the food - and the service - are top notch in my books. read more

I ordered food for the first time last night from The Great Wall Restaurant. The delivery time was great, however the food quality was not. We ordered a seafood dish which was suppose to include scallops & shrimp. The shrimp was over cooked and tough, and the scallops were actually what is called skate wing (fake scallops). They were maybe 1/8 of an inch thin and also over cooked. The rice was flavorless plain white rice. The only thing worth eating in the $50.00 meal was the egg role!! Very disappointed with the whole experience. Don't think I will be a repeat customer !! read more

Out of the several Chinese restaurants I have tried in Halifax, the Great Wall Restaurant seems to be the best. However, the prices are still overpriced as I have seen throughout the city. General Tso's Chicken is $14.95. The quality of the chicken, the spiciness of the sauce and the crispiness were all quite good. There are a few veggies for decoration but nothing special in that department. I split a half carafe of the Chilean white wine which was $15 (for the half carafe) and seemed reasonably priced. Sadly, it seems Chinese food is a "splurge" in this city for than a cheap dinner! read more

The wife and I have eaten in several Canadianized Chinese food joints. I have read the reviews on this site by several people concerning The Great Wall. I like to rate a restaurant by it's food quality, cleanliness, friendliness and at last their decor. We ordered the standard type S&S chicken balls, fried rice, chow mein and egg rolls plus a beef dish. I found the sweet and sour sauce was more like a thick and starchy paste. The fried rice was clumped together and tasteless. The egg roll was pasty and lacked flavor. This place is plain Jane as far as decour is concerned. The one star is mainly toward the quality of food. This place was recommended to me by local restaurateurs. I was sadly disappointed. Most cross country travelers would agree that there are some exceptional Chinese food spots. This our go to place when visiting our daughter in Halifax. She uses a power wheelchair which can be problematic in some restaurants but the owner, Patrick, and his staff are uber-accommodating and always exceptionally friendly. He always enthusiastically greets us as his "friends from the valley". The servers are awesome and when I remarked upon that Patrick said "That's the way it's supposed to be". This is a guy that gets customer service. The food is excellent. Ask for the Chinese menu (it's got English too) if you want more authentic (and I think better) choices. Definitely get the pot stickers and the ginger beef. It's nice to visit a place that treats you like family. read more

Difficult to do a critic of this restaurant. The server was super nice however really bad. He forgot the drinks" the water and utensils. We had to ask for everything twice or more. All the tables were having problems. But again the poor server look completely overwhelming and would say sorry all the time. The other waitress was not smiling. Ever. She hated customers or her job. As for the food it was decent. Not the best Canadian Chinese but not the worse. Taste was good, vegetables still crunchy but maybe as per my taste a bit too much cornstarch in the sauce. I've been here a quite a few times, usually for lunch with co-workers. The place is always packed, which is a good sign that it does a good job. I know that it's also been voted "Best Chinese Food" in the Coast forever. To me, it serves typical "Canadian" Chinese food. Nothing out of the ordinary, but the portions are HUGE and the price is very reasonable, which is why I don't object when there's a suggestion to go there. I've seen the owner, Patrick, and he is a high energy person and great to talk to. I find the restaurant to be too dark, but that may just be me. So i originally intended to try their dim sum, but much to my disappointment i came on the wrong day, Friday, and apparently Sundays is the dim sum tradition. So i will have to come back for those. Regardless, we were a party of 5, and the service was very good, we came in just as the dinner rush started, and even after it wasn't over whelming. We all ordered combination plates, and then several ordered soup and spring rolls on the side. The extras were delivered first, and then everyone combination plates arrived in a timely manner shortly afterwards. I honestly didn't find anything overly unique or special about my food. I had the sweet and sour chicken balls, the fried rice and chicken chow mein. So, i wouldn't go back for those. Or try a different platter. But I will come back regardless for the dim sum, as those got really good reviews. read more

This is definitely the best Chinese food I've had in Halifax so far. The spring rolls are huge and sooooo good, highly recommend. We've ordered separate dishes and sometimes combination plates. Have yet to be disappointed with anything we've tried. Portions are generous. Patrick, the owner is amazing, so friendly even on New Year's Eve when it was crazy busy. My only teeny tiny criticism is the taste of curry in the egg rolls. They're good but I just prefer my egg roll without curry. Eat here, you won't be disappointed!! read more
