I was Yelp-tricked into trying the Green Olive over my go-to Greek/Mediterranean options in Des Moines. We both appreciated the portion sizes but found the food just okay and kind of overpriced. I got the chicken and beef platter and my husband the Greek salad with shrimp. The rice tasted like it was from a 5-minute rice box and the beef was super tough. My husband said his salad was fine but wouldn't recommend the up charge for shrimp. I also ordered the baklava and was super bummed. Very subpar baklava. Drinks are canned or bottled pops but you can get a cup of ice if desired. TLDR: I might go back in a pinch but it's definitely skippable. read more

I give this place a solid 5 stars without a doubt in my mind. It's so good I drag family members back here, and they want to drag their friends back here also because of how fantastic the food is and complimented by fantastic prices. There are no fancy cloth tables, with fancy glasses here. It is a small family owned joint that serves the best Mediterranean food I have even had in my life. Absolutely everything you have here will taste 5 stars good. I already imagine them needing to expand in a couple of years after people find out how amazing this place is word of mouth. Cute spot that had constant traffic. Lots of dine-in customer and lots of order to-go customers. Service was pretty quick and the food was delicious. The Gyro meet had great flavour and the chicken kabob was very tender. I'm a big pita fan so I had to get 2 of those. The best surprise of the meal was the green salsa that came with it- delicious. Some of the best baklava I've had as well. Nice and flaky but not too sweet! If you are in the mood for Mediterranean, I highly recommend. Oh, and the portions sizes are HUGE. We found this place after a failed attempt to stop at a nearby restaurant (which is listed on Yelp but actually closed down). What an amazing surprise!!! We were greeted immediately by a friendly gal who sat us and was definitely familiar with the menu when I asked what their most popular dishes are. It's a casual environment, which I appreciate. We ordered the gyro combo plate and chicken shawarma. After we placed our order, we found their secret menu and promptly ordered the gyro fries. AMAZING!!! The fry seasoning is perfect and the homemade tzatziki sauce is so fresh! I would say that was my fav part of the meal but all was great. Portions are huge so we left with 2 boxes. We were also hoping to find a great new Mediterranean place in that part of town. Unfortunately, we both thought the food was pretty bland and flavorless. I got the #5 gyro meat platter and my husband got the #10 gyro mix platter. The lamb meat was a little dry but kind of tasty. The hummus was very smooth and creamy but had no flavor. I was hoping it would be garlicky or have some seasoning, but it tasted like nothing. The rice was also bland. So was the salad dressing and tzatziki. The green sauce wasn't too bad. My husband's beef kabobs were kind of gristly and chewy. Our favorite Mediterranean restaurant is Gazali's. Their food is exploding with flavor. We were hoping this food would taste similar to that, but everything here just tasted bland and needed more spices or seasoning. We were just expecting more flavor. We don't see any need to return. We had dinner here last night. We had a combination plate (#19) with chicken, beef, kafta (seasoned groud beef), dolmas, and falafel. It was fun to try a variety of items. The biggest wins were the green sauce, chicken, and fresh made pita. The hummus was good too. We also ordered the feta fries which were the best thing on the table. Wheels down and mega hangry a few days ago. Since there's about 5 posts a day for The Green Olive we unburied our snow-covered car and headed up the road. Less than a mile from the airport made this choice an easy one for us. Walked in and sat right away. 5:45p we were 1 of 3 tables, one of which already had food and the other already ordered. Food took a bit longer than I thought but it was worth the wait. TABOULI (small): parsley, tomatoes, olive oil, salt, lemon juices are the main ingredients, and we've had our fair share of Taboulis...both homemade and out, this one ranks a 3 out of 5. Not served with any pita, so we ordered some on the side; I needed a vehicle to shovel this in. Traditionally, it's not served with pita but, in the U.S, many places do and what we're used to. It was a little bland IMO. No app plates made eating this appetizer a little messy but we managed. THE WORKS: kabobs of chicken, steak, kafta (the sausage looking one), falafel patty, rice, hummus, and an amazing salad. Loved the salad dressing a LOT. Also really loved the spread of different proteins. Made 3 meals out of this one dish, having so many leftovers. CHICKEN SHAWARMA: chicken over rice, side salad and more of that amazing salad dressing. SAUCE FLIGHT: their sauces are fantastic. Labeled each one in the picture. Their homemade hot sauce is excellent I'm not a Lola's hot sauce fan (on all the tables) for this cuisine, so I was glad they had a homemade hot sauce. After having already been to the Farmer's Market we just couldn't do another line that long. Once we got back to the car we needed to find greek food. A quick Yelp search and we were off to Green Olive. Plenty of Parking. It was very busy inside. We were able to place our order quickly-they have so much to chose from!-and after a short wait we were headed back home with a wonderfully fragrant bag of food. The food was packed well, they included plenty of garlic sauce, green salsa and tzatziki. The food is very good! We got The Works, a Mixed Grill and the Lamb Kabob. We were craving some Mediterranean food and this place was suggested, so we decided to try it. It did not disappoint! We visited around 2pm on a Sunday and it was busy. The staff greeted us immediately and were super kind. I ordered the chicken and falafel plate and every single item on that plate was delicious. The chicken was perfectly cooked and well-seasoned; the falafel was crispy and tasty, and the rice, salad, and hummus all paired so well.
