A tastefully redone former YMCA in downtown San Diego. The rooms are nice, and the Le Labo products are a nice touch. The staff are fantastic and truly a highlight of the stay. The hallways run a bit dark for my taste, though the overall look is stylish. The patio dining area is lovely. Breakfast currently falls short, but I'll hold off on grading it fully until the ongoing remodel wraps up, since it's clearly still a work in progress. Once the renovation is complete, I expect this will be a great property. Worth watching. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but everything seemed to have gone wrong for me when staying at this property. If you are handicapped or have luggage, traversing the steps at the entrance is a challenge. It didn't help that they were doing construction at the behind their building as you can hear the noise during the day. Perhaps it may be ADA accessible after the improvements. At least the front door person was eager to help with my luggage. Check-in was pretty easy, although I did have to wait as there was only one receptionist at the time. My Bonvoy Elite status was not acknowledged during check-in. To ride the elevator, you have to scan your keycard for security reasons. I proceeded to my room. The room was very small. The little table was probably the worst as it was full of clutter making the table hardly usable. The phone was barely audible even though I increased the column to full volume. All of a sudden, the fire alarm starts going off. Wow, it is super loud! It was a 5 minute false alarm as the building was doing maintenance, but that is not okay as the guests did not get any warning whatsoever. It was nice that the room offered Le Labo products. I didn't like the roller shades covering the windows as they let in lots of light in the room. The motion sensors in the bathroom were not functioning properly. I had to press the button to turn on the lights instead of the motion sensor triggering the lights. The ice machine was not working on my floor. I had to go to the next floor to get ice. I think for the steep price that I paid for this room, I don't think it was worth it. I did have an amazing breakfast downstairs. This hotel only offers valet parking at an arm and a leg $68. I decided to self park my car in the adjacent Columbia Garage. The sign said $30 for overnight parking. I ended up paying $36 which is steep and not the advertised price. read more

The best stay while I was visiting Downtown San Diego. Attentive and pleasant staff, offered medical support and a room change when appropriate, as well as making sure I was medically okay. Bartenders and servers are lovely and friendly while managing tasks. My husband arranged the Valentines Day event through OpenTable and they had us in the open courtyard of the guild hotel. PARKING Street parking only. We walked a block or two and got lucky. Otherwise, it was $30 event parking likely for the Valentine's Day premiums. SERVICE The event didn't start right on time and almost seemed like they were waiting for all 20 tables to be seated before starting. It was a great experience but when my husband told me the price, I wouldn't have booked it since it was not worth the $300ish especially not being a drinker FOOD This was a pre-arranged meal. I'd honestly rather have eaten from their bar menu that had more vegetarian options but we made this work considering the price tag too. 4 course meal and for the main dish, I got the salmon and my husband had the duo chicken & beef dish. I stayed at The Guild hotel for a recent business trip. It is an excellent example of adaptive reuse of a historic building as it used to be a YMCA. It is a beautiful structure from the outside. I arrived via Amtrak to San Diego and this hotel is just around the corner from the train depot. Very convenient. I arrived at the main entrance, which is up several stairs and did not have a chance to explore the outside of the building extensively so I do not know if there is an accessible entrance elsewhere. The lobby is very tasteful and boutique. There is a welcoming bar and several tables and chairs in a comfortable elegant looking seating area. You are checked in by employees at two low tables that look to be more in a concierge position than front desk attendants. After you are checked in you're pointed towards the elevators. Across from the elevators as a tasteful gift shop and next to that is a area that offers various snacks and sundries for sale. I was surprised at the selection for such a small hotel. There are several healthy options and the prices are reasonable. The rooms are somewhat small and don't have built-in closets. I was in an upgraded king bed room and it had a very small wardrobe as well as some hangers on a wall mirror installation. There are no refrigerators in the rooms so if you have medication or any other items that need to be refrigerated I would not recommend this hotel. Breakfast is included with your stay and there is a nice selection of breakfast items to choose from. Some require additional payment. They also have a full selection of espresso drinks. The staff is very friendly and I think this is a great spot for a short stay in the city of San Diego. I'll let you in on a little secret: taking a woman on a getaway/vacation for her birthday is one of the best - if not THE best - ways to celebrate. Another secret is that the hotel accommodations are also of utmost importance. My boyfriend was whisking me away from Los Angeles to San Diego/Coronado for my birthday and chose The Guild Hotel for our abode away from home. Did he do a good job or was he in the dog house? The Guild Hotel is an architecturally sublime hotel part of the Marriott Tribute Portfolio (Marriott's boutique hotel line) located in downtown San Diego within arm's reach of every tourist attraction and district - you can't get more centrally located than this! The Guild Hotel has a rich history having served as an Army/Navy YMCA from 1924 and being reborn in 2019 with a modern facelift transforming into a boutique hotel but while staying true to its past beauty. The exterior of The Guild Hotel features stunning stonework masonry trim, carpeted stairs with a bellhop awaiting your arrival and large tropical plants combining a historical downtown feel with a boho twist. Note: parking is either valet or self-park at the garage around the corner. Entering The Guild Hotel certainly solidifies the feel of luxury but at an affordable price point with a lobby, bar area, gift shop, convenience store and courtyard for dining. Although it is noticeably a small hotel, it is curated with an expensive feel while also being accessible. Even small details aren't overlooked at The Guild Hotel as the entire space smells AMAZING and turns out they pump a spa-scent into the air. I was obsessed with it (and you can purchase the scented items in their gift shop). Check-in also feels more high-end than standard with various low tables and chairs (sort of reminded me of a bank) as opposed to one large front desk. The Guild Hotel offers a variety of room options below street level, street level, standard, lofts, and penthouse with the majority being "petite queen" or "petite king" (with or without courtyard views). My boyfriend chose the Petite King which features one king-sized bed, a small table with two modern chairs, a sette in front of the bed, nightstands and a very nice contemporary modern bathroom essence. As others have noted: the rooms are indeed very small (180 square feet) and in my opinion is better suited for a solo traveler; but I didn't mind cozy-ing up with my other half. There are also no closets with The Guild Hotel opting for a wardobe and an iron bar/mirror setup that can be used to hang clothing which is obviously all they could offer due to the small size; but it is a bit tough for those who like to unpack. Also missing is a room refrigerator (there are mini fridges at check-in which can be used by guests) and no coffee makers. I had an iron (I called customer service and requested one before my trip) but I noticed another review saying they didn't have one. The rooms are small is the point and not 100%; BUT they are nice AND passed my OCD hotel cleanliness: no bugs, no dust, no dirt, nothing in shabby shape. Plus, the bed was perfect with a mixture of firm with plush. Another note worth mentioning is that the rooms are quiet both in respect to not hearing others nor the outside. We even opened our window for a test and it was quite loud but once shut; completely muted. I need these windows and insulation at home! The Guild Hotel has a 24-hour fitness center complete with weights, machines, and Pelaton bikes on the below street level which was decent enough although some of the machines were broken with no out of order sign. There is also a single chair barber shop (appointment only) for the fellas. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and The Guild Hotel offers guests various options included (plus some for purchase) like eggs, toast, yogurt, granola, fruit, bacon, etc. You won't find sugary cereals or stale muffins here! I did have a slight birthday hiccup and bone to pick with The Guild Hotel. My birthday was mentioned to the customer service call center ahead of time (The Guild Hotel outsources their calls which is actually annoying) and as a Marriott Bonvoy member; I was promised a birthday surprise. There was nothing in my room upon arrival. We mentioned this to the front desk concierge who assured us that it was in the computer to happen on my actual birthday. There was nothing on my birthday either at which point my boyfriend spoke to them again and it was a little bit of a back-and-forth with some claims of it NOT being in the computer which doesn't make sense as the day before it was? When returning from my birthday dinner, there was a bottle of champagne in my room so they eventually got it right; but I shouldn't have had to "run after" The Guild Hotel to complete my birthday task. Despite some flaws; the good outweighs the bad at The Guild Hotel and my boyfriend did amazingly in his choosing. I would absolutely return to The Guild Hotel on a future LA escape. read more

We had a reservation here for 2 nights during the LA fires. We walked in and had our small 8 lb dog with us. The person behind the desk saw our dog and said "your room is having a maintenance issue and we are out of rooms", conveniently. They sent us to a sister hotel, The Granger, in a bad part of area of Downtown, where we had to walk from a public garage, and received no compensation for the price difference in the hotels, the hotel they sent us to was of course cheaper than what we prepaid through an app. Not fun to deal with while also dealing with a fire, which they were aware of. Had a very nice two night stay at this boutique hotel by the Marriott. The location was walking distance from the train station after a late night four hour train ride from LA. As expected, room was small but I didn't mind. It has a minimalist feel and decor with all the necessities for a simple weekend stay. It was clean, affordable for the location, and comfortable. The booking rate also included a $35/day amenity fee which I used at the bar for a night cap and at their onsite cafe for breakfast. To name a few, the hotel is walking distance to Little Italy, Seaport Village, USS Midway Museum, the Gaslamp Quarter, and the waterfront to take the Coronado Ferry. read more

Stayed here for a few days during our San Diego trip. Every employee we encountered was wonderful. I commend them for their service since they remembered to refill our water every night after asking once. The girl who helped us at check in, Mia, was very personable and friendly. She was pretty much there every night of our stay. You are greeted with stairs before you enter the hotel, not very ADA-compliant but I didn't see where else customers who are disabled can enter. However, we were always greeted at the door by the bellman. Rooms here are very small and not much of a view. We had room 508, corner room but the view was meh. We also found the room to be really dark. We do love that the burning was transformed from a YMCA to a hotel. We didn't get the chance to enjoy their bar or breakfast but it was always packed. I would like to say, stay away from the Guild Hotel, that way there will always be a room when I want to stay, but I can't. This place is great. The rooms I have stayed in are small, but it's everything I need in a room. They have larger rooms. The bathrooms are good size. The main reason this place rocks is the people and the lobby bar. We have experienced a few bartenders, on our stays here,all have been great. However this trip, we were served by Bill, and Garrick. They are the best. Not only great people, but phenomenal mixologists. They work well together. Garrick made us a couple drinks that we have never had, they were so good. I had the food for the first time here, so good, totally hit the spot, and tasty. Bottom line, it has a great atmosphere, walking distance from the train depot, so it's convenient to take the train and stay here. Remember though. Save me a room. Also, Jose at check in was extremely professional and extremely awesome. I need to add, that after we checked out, we had sometime before our train. We sat down at lobby bar, the three people working there, (not bartenders, but baristas, and servers) Thomas, Sage, and Kaira were also the best. Had a great stay at the Guild !!! We stayed in a city level room (room 100) the room was a decent size, large shower. Loved the high ceilings and the ceiling to floor windows. We did not have any issues with steel noise . The staff was very nice and accommodating, had a drink at the bar, very reasonable prices. We opted to parking in the public parking garage right next door $30 for overnight . The location of the hotel was great just a 15 minute walk to little Italy and maybe 8 minute walk to the water . Window as you can see was almost non existent 3. There's one person at front desk, they take a long time. Not their fault. 4. Bed was a full size or queen. 5. Destinations fee of $70 and parking fee of $60. With tax I paid about $200+ per night with 2 rooms just in taxes and fees. 6. 2 rooms for 2 nights were about $850+ taxes and fees. 7. The breakfast sandwich was $15 and not good... Not upset but definitely not worth the money I paid with experience I had with the property. I stayed at The Guild for 9 nights. It is a lovely old building that has been lovingly restored and updated; and yet, it isn't fussy. The check-in and lobby and restaurant are all one big room; there is a relaxed vibe. I had a sense that visitors and also locals use the bar and restaurant. The most noticeable thing during my stay was the staff. They were professional and authentic at the same time. When I called with some questions before arriving, Dave at the front desk was helpful. He said he'd be there when I arrived. He was and I was early but he was able to get me into a room well before check-in time (I know properties never guarantee this but it is lovely when they can do so). He was helpful throughout my whole stay. Kash and Victor, the doormen were so helpful and welcoming. Daniel and Myron (on the nighttime desk shift) were helpful also and surprisingly friendly at midnight or 3 in the morning! Franklin on overnight security was very helpful. Fred in housekeeping always had a smile for me. I learned he reads lips and uses sign language. Aldo on the maintenance crew was also very helpful. Shane and Parker in banquets really seemed like they enjoyed their work. I remembered so many name because I experienced people providing "service" in their service industry jobs. (I work in the industry too and it was fun being on the other side of it) The food is really good!! Many people seem to just come there to eat. The Super Bowl with salmon was my favorite lunch. Another reviewer mentioned parking. I learned that the valet is a separate company; give plenty of time to have your car brought around. Even better, the lot right behind the building was $25 per night and very clean and well-lite. Like many historic properties, there are many different room types and sizes. Be clear of that when you choose your room type so you're not surprised by one of the smaller rooms upon arrival. I look forward to a return visit when I cam not working and can really relax in and enjoy the property. read more

The hotel itself was clean, elegant, and smelled amazing. It gave the aura of the 1 Hotel in West Hollywood. The room impressively had a supply of Le Labo shampoo, conditioner and body wash. After a very long night out celebrating my birthday we arrived back to the hotel the first night to find ourselves sleeping on the most comfortable bed! (I've owned Sleep Numbers) The staff were also incredibly generous. At arrival they assisted us with our lounge and upgraded our room at no cost! They likely weren't as booked but considering that it was just two girls - we really appreciate the extra space and made our stay that much more enjoyable. Temporary parking is a hit or miss you will likely have to pay a meter though there's and 20 min unloading area on the side of the building. A HUGE plus to this beautiful hotel is the overnight parking option of paying 25 to park in a five level parking structure behind the hotel. This allowed us to leave our car, uber to dinner and then go out dancing stress free! The location is also unbeatable. You are at the epicenter of downtown San Diego with Little Italy for countless dinners ~15 minutes away and the Gaslamp District for cocktails and l dancing ~10 minutes away. Saturday was spend: hiking Torrey Pine Natural Reserve, a picnic on the beach, getting dinner at Monello and then clubbing at Parq and Oxford. Sunday was spend: breakfast at the EarlyBird, skydiving and curing a hangover at the beach. Thank you so much Guild team for an unforgettable birthday weekend! The room was nice, but it was pretty small and minimal and didn't have a mini fridge. The FAQs on the website are outdated and supposedly the destination fee is no longer a thing, so you don't get the $35 food and beverage credit anymore. The customer service was lacking when I called to ask why I was not given the credit. I was talked over and not able to complete my sentences. I just completed my second stay at The Guild. My last stay during Thanksgiving was riddled with problems, but Director of Operations Toms Juhnevics made up for it on this stay by leaving some treats in my room on check-in and offering a few other niceties throughout my stay. We chatted about the issues and ways the hotel can improve and he was very willing to listen. The downside of this hotel is that it's a bit removed from Downtown but it is next door to the train station and a short walk from Little Italy. The rooms are small, but I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't be in your hotel room for too long on vacation. The lobby bar & restaurant are the standouts of this property, to be honest. Emily makes some great cocktails and most of the food is pretty good. The breakfast burrito was way better than I expected. No pool but apparently you can use the one across the street. And if you're parking a car, definitely use street parking or find a lot through one of the parking apps. read more

I was looking for a more historic vibe, and remember when this place was the YMCA growing up here in my favorite city. The staff were all welcoming, kind and helpful. The room was nice, clean and sleep quality great. LOVE the Le Labo toiletries in the room. They have a nice lobby bar serving up craft cocktails and food that we took advantage of while waiting on our room to be ready (they are serious on that 4pm checkin) loved the location which was walkable to where we were meeting family, etc on this quick trip. We are brunch here a few years ago and loved it. So, when we neeeded to overnight in downtown San Diego it was a logical choice. A nice historic building and beautiful entrance. Now, the first question from staff... valet? It's $56. Self park $25. Duh. Oh, and btw there is a $35 resort fee. If you get bugged by a resort fee that gets you zippo, do the math based on 162 rooms and would see a gross of over 2 million for the hotel. Wrong. All wrong. The bed and room was ok on street level and pretty bath. Bar is nice where we went to get a glass of wine last night and saw my last pix and the reason it's 2 stars. I love dogs, cats and most animals, but for a hotel to allow a guest and his 100lb dog to take over a bar couch? Fast asleep? No way. Message to the staff. Wake up. If you want to stay in the gaslamp area for an affordable price. This is it! The Guild portfolio hotel, previously known as the YMCA back in the 20's. Once you arrive, you can park in the valet (temporarily) to check in and take your luggage up to your room. Afterward, you can either pay for valet or around the corner there is a self-parking garage. The parking garage charges $25 for overnight parking. When you walk in, there is a beautiful bar and lounge area, and to the left is the check-in desk. I'm visiting from Las Vegas, and I was looking for a long line or a big check-in desk area but no, this was more of an intimate setting. However, I like this idea, you can communicate with the front desk agent a lot more easily. The check-in & check-out process was quick and the young lady (Melody) who helped me check in is genuinely sweet and gave me advice on where to walk and wander. Lastly, the room! The room gives a calming, yet modern feeling. It's really cute. It comes with a lot of amenities, IE: a dental kit, a mini fridge for medication, robes, and slippers. If you want to be lazy and watch TV, you'll have access to YouTube and Netflix. Which is a great feature! If you don't plan on staying here, I recommend at least checking out the hotel. The hotel lobby and bar are a must-see with vaulted ceilings and pretty art! read more

What a lovely spot to work and rest in downtown San Diego. Pro tip: use the Marriott Bonvoy app to check in ahead of time! I did this and my room was ready at 11am and I didn't even have to pay an early check in fee or anything. The room was decent sized. The only thing I didn't love was the windows face a courtyard where there seems to be lots of gathering happening so for privacy you can't really keep the blinds open much. But other than that, this was a wonderful stay. The $35 food and bar credit was easy to make use of with their delicious breakfast and lunch menu. I also appreciated the free coffee and tea in the lobby in the afternoon as well as the little grab and go marketplace. The staff was also extremely kind and courteous every time we interacted. Another pro tip: scan the QR code on the valet ticket to call your car ahead of time. I did not do this but wish I had! Overall, this was a comfortable and luxurious stay in San Diego and I look forward to my next trip back! read more

The check in desks are off to the side and not your typical countertop checkin. The rooms are small, but well designed, so we didn't feel crowded in a room for two with a king bed. I love the vibe of the smaller size hotel. The check-in reminded me of Peru. At check-in, you are seated instead of lining up in a que for the front desk. The room was nice and comfortable. The hotel was nicely decorated and it smells good. The bar downstairs was great for my friend to walk over for a night cap. The drawbacks were no mini fridge in the room and all the ice machine were broken or did not dispense ice. So just call downstairs for ice to be delivered to your room. Parking tip: there is a garage next door for $25 overnight parking compared to valet of $60 a night. Lots of restaurants and coffee options around. Located 1 block for the train station. Super convenient and safe location. read more

The Guild will charge you a hidden $35 resort fee (with taxes it's about $39). This was an absolute shock to my wife who booked this room as a surprise, thinking The Guild was a "more affordable" option. It's not. It's the same rate as a lot of the other hotels in the Gaslamp. read more

We've stayed at the Guild Hotel in San Diego four times now, and it honestly never disappoints! During our most recent stay this weekend, we met Samantha and Shireen who were warm and welcoming and provided helpful and accommodating service which is why this hotel consistently remains my top choice whenever I visit San Diego. The little touches, like the Santal 33 scented body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, really set the experience apart. The hotel is always spotless and perfectly situated--just a block and a half from the Santa Fe train station. This makes it incredibly convenient when we travel by train from Los Angeles, saving us the hassle and expense of an Uber or Lyft. Highly recommended! read more

Fantastic stay from beginning to end. Plenty of public parking nearby. Checkin was a breeze and ever so polite. Plus we were given a room upgrade! Beautiful, spotless room (for our entire stay) - loved the furnishings and fixtures - including windows that open for those cool ocean breezes. The gift shop is well stocked with just about everything a guest may need. Doormen very kind. All in all a 5 star stay. Location Location Location! read more

So, I came to San Diego to visit one of my best friends of 40+years who happened to be visiting from Ohio. We decided to have a drink before I had to catch the train to LA. The Guild is amazing-Sage the bartender provided some of the best customer service ever; his professionalism was excellent and based on this, we'll be back there soon. read more

We had an amazing time this past weekend! Our room was very clean, they provided all the amenities we could have needed! One improvement I would say is a mini fridge would be awesome! We did however appreciate the accessibility of getting your own ice to the room! The location is perfect you are in the middle of everything there is to see in downtown San Diego so we really appreciated that. The front staff was super friendly and helpful. From the door man to the valet guys we were treated lovely! Definitely recommend this hotel to future visitors! You can valet your car while staying at the hotel, the downstairs bar makes it for a fun filled weekend with nice music and a pretty extensive food menu to enjoy! We stayed with our two dogs and they were very very accommodating! Also they do private events so if you're looking for a place to host your wedding or bday this is a must! Our check in and check out was super easy. Thank you for the hospitality we will sure be back and recommend it to our friends! Lovely smell in the hallways was def appreciated and enjoyable! My friend invited me to an event that was held in the lobby area. They were showcasing a new liquor and made a few cocktails for us to try. There was a variety of appetizers that I also got to eat. They had spanakopita, mushroom bites, charcuterie, meatballs, and grilled bread, etc. The food was delicious and drinks were strong! We tried to crash a wedding out in the patio, but weren't permitted to attend lol. I had a great time and would love to have a full sit-down brunch or dinner soon! read more
