Bleh. Another one of those insta-worthy spots that you have to visit when in Seattle but really... why. It's so nasty and smells of sugary sweet but stale and spit and UGH GROSS. I kept trying to inch up to the wall for a picture but was so scared that I would lose my balance and just... touch the ALREADY CHEWED GUM. WHY DO WE DO THIS, AMERICA? WHY IS THIS A THING. There were small shops selling gum for the wall right around the corner. Make sure to bring your own... why pay a premium for something you can get super cheap at your local grocery store. I do like how my pictures came out... but really? Why? Make sure to save 5 minutes of your touristy sightseeing to walk through, snap a few pictures and get the heck outta there. read more

Our local friends took us to the Post Alley Gum Wall at Pike Place Market while we were visiting them in Seattle. I'm glad we got to see it, but I wasn't blown away. I think you either love it or you think, "meh" or GROSS! It's a wall, covered in chewed gum. I don't think it's disgusting, but I don't think it's really beautiful either. It's worth looking at for a few minutes, snapping a photo, and then you can say you saw it! read more

This place is definitely just for Instagram and for looks! When I came here you have to try to park somewhere with street parking. It's own alley and the gum is everywhere even on the ground. I wish I had gum so I can stick it on the wall! It's pretty unique and you can get some good pictures but there's a lot of other people trying to get the angles. It's a big tourist place and it's right next to Pikes Place Market! It's free to go to and fun to see! Definitely a good stop when you are in Seattle! read more

One of those quirky things to do in Seattle, except there's really not much to do but stop and stare for a few minutes. This does make a cool back drop for photos though, I took a few models to come here and it's perfect, with the help of many mouths that took their time to chew on gum and contribute to add to the collection on the wall, we are able to have a very colorful background. Try not to get too close, we don't know what cooties there are if you accidently touch any gum. It's below Pike Place Market, not sure if there's an exact address as it's within a hallway, but once you get to the market, most likely you'll be able to ask somebody to direct you there. Umm, I guess it's charming? You see it on people's Instagram so you think it's something you should go see. Honestly, I think it's gross. Literally an area filled with others germs. Maybe I'm weird. It's not well lit at night so it's kinda creepy. Like sneak a picture and walk away because you're literally in a quiet, dim-lit alley. Tourist trap turn safety hazard. Just follow the scent of mint. Oddly that's what it smelled like when I walked closer there. You'd think it would be gross, in a way it is. Do not touch the wall, unless you're into that. How do you envision an oxymoron? The Gum Wall is an icky - no - sticky destination that for some reason is extremely Insta-worthy. On my second visit, I added a piece of my own chewed bubble gum to the monument wall. Not only can you find various sizes and colors of chewed gum, there are pics, wrappers, graffiti and business cards stuck to the wall. It's certainly worth a visit even if just to be grossed out or make your social media feed a little more interesting. read more

Saw this event on top 10 things to do in Seattle. It is a strange city highlight but each city has its own corky little hidden gems. I was surprised by the amount of individuals in the region and taking photos. This is truly an odd spectacle but worth seeing at least once within your lifetime. You're either going to be grossed out or completely enthralled by it all. I must admit I love it! It is just kinda fun. I mean complete strangers get comfortable with visiting this spot and sticking their own gum on the wall - most likely on top of another piece of gum that was in someone else's mouth. I did visit this place on my first trip to Seattle a few years back but it so much better this time around with my son being older and actually able to participate in the tradition of leaving gum. Gum! Gum! Gum! There is so much gum it's crazy! This is very much a tourist attraction! It's super busy and if you want a spot on the wall to take a photo you may have to wait for one to open up! There is plenty of gum to go around, for photo props! The ally is located just under the shops. You can either take the elevator down or walk down the street and take the stairs. If you're short on time I recommend the elevator, if you can do stairs and want to explore the view from the top of the stairs is really nice so I do recommend! Depending on the time of year you visit the ally will have a different smell to it. In the summer it can be a little more smelly. If that's due to the restaurants or the gum no one knows! If you want some good photos I recommend going early to avoid the crowds. read more

Why not check it out?! There are two entrances- one by the front signage of Pike's Market Place, and the back is at the back stairs near the Great Wheel. Expect about 15-20 minutes here. Not much art work, but you'll get your splash of colors for the day! Highly recommend coming here with neutral colors so you can take some cute photos with the cray-cray background. Just don't stand too close to the wall...you never know if someone had just stuck on a fresh wad of gum... PS: After this, go eat some food and walk around Pike's Place! Lots to explore. read more

By visiting this place, I had no idea that I earned a most dubious distinction that does not generate a great source of pride for me. I have now officially been to the five "germiest"' tourist attractions in the world according to a 2009 poll on TripAdvisor.com. This ranked second only to the Blarney Stone in Ireland (kissed indiscriminately by tourists) and was followed by St. Mark's Square in Venice (pigeon germs and droppings), the cement courtyard at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood (who knows what people do with the hand and shoeprints?), and Oscar Wilde's Tomb in Paris (more indiscriminate kisses but with deliberate lipstick marks). Ewww. Ladies and gentlemen, for your amusement, this is the Pike Place Market Gum Wall. I have to agree that it's disgusting when you think about brick walls covered in used chewing and bubble gum, often several inches thick, on brick walls stretching fifteen feet high and out Post Alley for over fifty feet. It started in 1993 when a cheeky theater troupe left their gun on the wall with coins pushed on top. Immediate attempts to scrape it off when people decided to replicate this off-putting habit, and now you have this startling sight, appalling on one hand yet impressive on the other. Pure gross. And evidently that's the attraction. An entire wall of people putting their chewed gum on the wall anyway they can. Word has it that the local theatre banned gum from entering so it started by having those outside putting their gum on the wall outside. Now it has grown into a sort of cult like tradition to have those from far and near add to the wall. Evidently they have to power was it off every year which adds to hundreds of pounds of gum waste to clean off. read more

Before I begin, let me say that my kids would rate this a "5" and thought it was a "must see" while in Seattle. Lol..... You could literally walk right past this alley in the fish market area, but my daughter had her GPS guiding us down these narrow stairs to the gum wall. Honestly, I was grossed out because there's used gum everywhere! On the walls, the ground, hanging from pipes, etc. The younger crowd here are all scrambling for photos for social media. However, I was too preoccupied trying to avoid contact with all my surroundings to want any photos. I ended up having to carry all my kids stuff and their friends stuff because nobody wanted to put anything on the gum-covered ground. Then I had to take countless photos of young people posing in front of the "cool gum." In a nutshell, if you're a parent you'll likely not see the "attraction" to this attraction. In addition, you'll be completely grossed out by your surroundings. However, your children will LOVE it here and want to take numerous photos documenting their visit. Very cute place to visit beneath the market! It is a little hidden gem, that has become a piece of history here in Seattle. Unfortunately, it was raining today and it is closed for the week because they are cleaning the walls. It smells like bubblegum! I think it would be a great place for a photo op if you can bring some chewing gum with you and take photos while it is not raining outside. This was possibly one of the most repulsive things that I've seen in my life. First, let's talk about the fact that most chewing gum is actually plastic. Yes, it's made from acrylic base not from actual material from a tree. Not that says material would be more biodegradable because once it's been processed it's not really even food. But then, to go stick this on the wall with all your saliva and germs, along with bits of paper whatever other magpie ornaments people find: it's disgusting. This is literally the worse shady alleyway to get into a street fight or attempt a mugging. For one, there is ALWAYS a crowd of tourists sun, rain, hail or snow. And even if you tried mugging someone at night, I doubt there would be anyone at night to mug as you can't really see the gum wall in the dark. Second... any situation that leads to an altercation in this alleyway would lead to someone getting smacked into a wall of dried saliva that's been there god knows how long. The gross factor is enough to deter anyone from trying to fight here. Jokes aside, Portland may have its feminist book store, cock-n-ball doughnuts, and "Keep Portland Weird" sign... but Seattle finds beauty in the gross habit of sticking your gum to a city wall. Just head down the stairs next to Rachel the Pig and you'll find yourself in a sketchy brick alleyway with colorful pieces of gum. Many tourists and even locals have contributed, with some folks taking the opportunity to advertise their businesses by sticking their cards to the wall. Should you choose to stick your gum... try not to touch someone else's in the process. Or go ahead, if you're weird like that. Who needs love locks? Who needs trees that have "M+J forever" carved into the trunk? We've got a gum wall... which embodies hundreds if not thousands of individual's spit on a flat surface for years... at least until the city decides to scrape it off. It's definitely not as impressive as it was at its peak, but even after it got scraped off last year people still kept doing it, so now there's still something to see. Even as I write, I am still grossed out from remembering, and my nose is full of wrinkles now. Need to finish this review fast so that I won't have permanent wrinkle on my face.
