In a major city like Washington, D.C. where appointments for a simple haircut is so hard to find and when you do they cost an arm and a leg, The Hair Shoppe is a life saver local business! I get a haircut with one hair wash in the beginning and another after the haircut it costs me as low as $40. I was told that $35 for the haircut and $5 is the final hair wash-- you can't beat that. Plus, whenever I call them, it is always available. I usually let them know about an hour before I go and bam! they say "please come in." They understand that we, Washingtonians, are super busy so they meet our expectations so well in my opinion. Whenever I go, I want to leave a new Yelp review because they are absolutely amazing. It's a bit crazy that finding a good barber shop in the National Landing area is impossible. They're either not good or will overcharge you. Stumbled upon this local shop ran by two amazing women. I called in to see if they had any availability the same day and was able to squeeze me in at 5:15PM. The cost is super reasonable at $35, compared to other places charging $40+ and even $85! And the cut itself was actually decent. Will be coming back in the future for sure! read more

Debated whether to post this review - my haircut was not good, certainly won't be coming back but perhaps there were some communication issues and misunderstandings about what I wanted that I failed to clear up before they started cutting But wanted prompted me to post this review was that the entire time they were cutting my hair both sisters were trying to convert me by telling me that Jesus is coming and forcing me to watch YouTube videos of folks who had "seen hell" and come back from the "dead" to warn sinners to repent. Even more uncomfortable experience than my pretty bad haircut - felt a bit like a hostage situation. I'm sure both ladies didn't mean any harm and there was no ill intent behind this but it was truly the worst haircut experience I've had in my life. read more

This is a great spot tucked away in the back of a K St office building. I showed a photo of the kind of hair cut I was looking for, and was very pleased with the result. The prices are moderate -- more than Hair Cuttery or similar outlets -- but I found the quality to be on par with the much pricier Grooming Lounge nearby. With haircuts that last for weeks, a few extra dollars are well worth it! Side note: I'm a fan of the soothing classical music that they typically play in the background. read more

If you're into more contemporary styles, don't go. If you're an older businessman, this is the place. I asked for a high skin taper. I got a fade. Asked to keep the top long, and got it a lot shorter. Not that it was horrible; they just didn't listen to me. I got a normal dude's haircut. They didn't follow my instructions at all. I got the impression that these two older ladies have one haircut that they know how to do, and just add some variation based on what the customer says. For the record, one of my buddies likes this joint and he's pretty fashion forward. I'm probably just one bad experience. read more

The first few times I went here, Kim and Suki took extra time to understand what look I was going for--periodically checking in while cutting to see if things were turning out the way I liked. They quickly picked up on my preferences and nowadays I don't have to say anything once I get in the chair unless I'm looking for something different. I found Kim and Suki's shop by chance a few years ago and have been coming here ever since. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I typically hate getting my hair cut. I have very fine and straight hair, and it has always been a pain finding a good cut, one where lines don't show and the style is what I want. I've also always found it difficult to explain exactly what I want to a hair stylist or barber. I never have those problems with Kim and Suki. Kim is very skilled and has decades of experience. She does several kinds of styles. She's cut my hair short before, and more recently long. I was equally happy with the results no matter the style of cut. The price is totally reasonable, especially given the quality of the job. They tend to be busy and though they take walk-ins it's better to call ahead. I have never had a bad experience with them -- and this from a guy who hates getting haircuts. read more

I have been going to Suki and Kim for years and just went back twice since they reopened after the Covid-19 shutdown. They are doing a great job scheduling so that only one person is in the shop(pe) at a time. They sanitize everything between customers and they are of course in full masks and found a way to cut hair without taking the customers' mask off. I have done very little retail in-store for months but felt perfectly safe and got a great hair cut as always. Current customers: please come back, they no longer have a sustainable business with the present lack of clients. read more

Kim and Suki do a fantastic job with haircuts and they have a wonderful little shop tucked away in the Commonwealth building (go past the receptionist desk through the hall on the left side, take the right, left, then right and you'll find yourself there). Both Kim and Suki have great attention to detail, usually performing a shampoo and a men's crew haircut in about 30 minutes. They're always careful as you get up to keep checking the cut over to make sure it's perfect. Gotta appreciate that. Been a customer of theirs since 2006 and never hesitate about coming back. Prices aren't Supercuts or Sport Clips prices, but you aren't getting that type of service, either. read more

I cannot say enough good things about the sister team of Kim and Suki and their salon, The Hair Shoppe. I have been going there since 1994. Most of those years, I worked in DC and could schedule a cut during the business day, getting in/out in 30 minutes. No hassles, no waiting. They keep very crisp schedules. I have referred several colleagues to Kim and Suki over the years. All have become loyal customers too. Many times, I've seen old friends and colleagues in Suki's chair while Kim cut mine. Rule of thumb: Kim handles straight hair and Suki takes the wavy/curly ones. Despite moves to California, Oklahoma and now Houston, I still come get a haircut from Kim every time I'm back in DC. Nobody has ever cut my hair as well as Kim. In fact, I just had a cut about an hour after landing in DCA on Friday. Long distance customers are nothing new to Kim and Suki. I have had clients who booked appointments from Geneva, Chicago when their jobs had them living outside DC. Other regulars drive from Alexandria, Fredericksburg and Suburban Maryland. I know why. They come for the nicest, most talented, most unpretentious hair stylists in our Nation's Capital -- maybe in the entire Nation. I've been going to The Hair Shoppe for over 2 years now and I love it. Suki and Kim are very sweet ladies and they really do their best to ensure that you are satisfied with their work. Someone mentioned in another review that they are perfectionists, that's exactly how I view these two ladies. Not sure why people are upset about making appointments. They are located near several office buildings and their clients tend to come in during lunch or a quick break. Making appointments benefit customers, unless you like rolling the dice every time you want your hair cut. Not sure why using clippers or shears matters that much, they can use a potato peeler as long as it gets the results I desire. If you are used to getting your hair cut at Hair Cuttery or SuperCuts, you might think they are a bit expensive. I have no issues with their pricing as I've never been unhappy with their work. You pay for what you get. When I used to go to HC or SC, I had a 50/50 shot at walking out satisfied. Suki has always made sure that I'm happy with her work. If you want a great haircut from two ladies who are proud of their craft, come here. If you want a cheaper haircut where you might walk out with a bowl cut, go to Hair Cuttery. read more

I've found equally good haircuts elsewhere at cheaper prices since my first Haire Shoppe review. But all of these places are far away in Virginia surburbs (e.g. Centreville). Out of the seven haircuts I've had in the past year, four were still at the Hair Shoppe. Sometimes, you impulsively need a haircut. With regards to the Hair Shoppe, be forewarned that your haircut can be rushed if they're busy, particularly if you're a walk-in. Avoid the hussle and make an appointment. One of the best haircuts I've ever had. I walked in without an appointment and Suki smiled and ushered me to the shampoo section immediately. I really mean immediately-- there was no sitting and waiting, no awkward standing at the counter, I barely broke my stride between the sidewalk and the shampoo seat. As she shampooed my hair, Suki politely told me that it's usually by appointment only. After the shampoo, I waited probably 10 minutes until there was a free seat. Some people who had appointments moved ahead of me, which made sense. The actual haircut methodology was a little odd. Suki did my sides and back and Kim did the top. I think this is because it was somewhat busy and I was a walk-in. Either way, it worked out fine. I have to say that Kim is an artist with hair. She really cares that your haircut looks exactly right, without a hair out of place. While Suki was doing my sides, Kim was finishing up a guy with a standard buzz cut. After he paid and started to walk out, she called him back and sat him down because there were a few hairs on top that she noticed might be a little too long. She fixed it in two minutes and double-checked to make sure it was perfect. My haircut received the same level of perfection, and I thoroughly appreciated it. It's so rare that I find a place as great as this one: 1. Super nice people 2. Excellent skills 3. Convenient location (if you live near Dupont Circle) 4. No forced conversation or awkward silence 5. They actually care that you look good The only issue really is the price. At $30 plus tip, it's a little steep, but most decent places in the city are about that price. If you really bargain hunt, you can probably find a place for $20 in the same area, but you're not going to get the same quality that you get here. I have been a client for many years. Suki and Kim offer the best service of any place I have tried, including more expensive salons. Kim uses scissors and clippers to shape my old gray hair to look great. I have also seen the same great results with younger guys. I will never go anywhere else. A word on location: Kim and Suki used to have a storefront place on 17th near K St NW. When that bldg closed, they moved to a salon nearby, at 1625 K St. It's inside, and you have to follow signs to the salon. Bu it's a larger and beautifully appointed place. David read more

I want to echo the sentiments in Jack's review below. I just got a great deal on a wash and haircut and am very pleased with the outcome. Like Jack, this was my first visit, so I'll be sure to update after a few visits. The owners/sisters were both very friendly and the shop is small but tidy. I called ahead for my appointment but there were two walk-ins while I was there. I'm a little concerned because Jack mentioned that Suki cuts the men's hair and Kim takes care of the rest, as it was Kim who cut my hair today?! Let's hope that they weren't passing judgment on my masculinity and that Kim was the only stylist available at my appointment time... It's great to have a reliable barber in the Farragut North area that will not cost me an arm and leg for a trim. read more

Wow. Where have you been all my life Hair Shoppe? I was a walk-in in urgent need of a cut. I was downtown and needed to not look like a bum for my girlfriend. Boy did this place deliver. I was drawn to this shop via yelp, but was wary, as I have gone to a lot of well-reviewed barbers before. They greeted me instantly, washed my hair and got me in a chair. At first I was nervous, as there was a lot of shuffling about from my two barbers, and the speed and care of the cut concerned me. But that was just the foreplay. After one stylist prepped me, the one with "the magic scissors" stepped in. After asking what I wanted in detail--and actually listening while inspecting the growth direction of my hair--I was shown a photo of Tom Brady from the Dodge Dart ads. "Like this?", she said. "We call it the classic." "Yes!", I replied "if you could make me look like Tom Brady while you're at it, I would appreciate it." So. I have to confess something. I have never seen my hair be cut. I have worn glasses since a young age, and have always had to take the specs off while the deed is done. This has led to A LOT of disappointment in my haircair career. But lo! After being handed off, switching chairs once, a vigorous head massage (awesome), and a few deft clips of the scissors--there he was: Tom Brady with Glasses. No, I'm sorry. I gave this place a second try, for the sake of fairness, and found my complaints to be true both times. 1. They do 90% of their hair cutting with electric clippers, often freehand, which creates an oddly round, sometimes lumpy appearance. For the price they charge, that's unacceptable. 2. They make you book appointments, even if it's 20 minutes off and they're empty, but then once you're there, there's no hurry at all. This last time, my very simple haircut took 70 minutes from the time I walked in the door to the time I left, which overran my meter by 10 minutes. 3. They raised the price of a basic men's haircut to $34. If this was a $20 haircut, most of these issues would be moot, but for that price (plus parking), you could go pretty much anywhere. read more

Exceptional place to get a haircut. They got so many things going for them, and I'm glad that I could find a shoppe to give me a good cut. Obviously biased, but these two Korean ladies do a great job. For the past three years, it was difficult finding a place in Charlotte that could cut Korean hair (maybe it's the shape of my head???)... it's not that different or anything, but I was looking for a specific cut and they got it right. In fact, one of them suggested I style my hair a particular way. I like it, and it looks great. Customer service is top-notch, attention to detail, and price is reasonable.
