Stopped by for a desperately needed haircut whilst on the road. These guys were very friendly, accommodating and was a great experience for a barber shop. Happy environment, lots of 'visitors' popping in to say hello to the staff as well as returning customers and folks dropping in (like me). Got a great haircut, had great conversation and the music they played was excellent - they often sang along out loud and had great voices too.. Just took our 18 month old son to see Stoney and boy did Stoney kill it. Our little one loves getting haircuts just about as much as he loves going to the doctor for his shots. He is not an easy customer and Stoney did a great job. He walked us through the best way to keep him safe during the cut and went above and beyond to ensure the cut was just perfect. We have been to over 6 different barbers looking for the right spot for our little. We will not be visiting a 7th! read more

1:11 As in 1 hour, 11 minutes. That's the amount of time from when I dropped the quarters in the meter until I returned to drive away. Way too much time to get a haircut on a Saturday afternoon. With hard-wood floors, clean white walls, photos of all kinds of hairstyles, framed barber licenses on the wall and a 42" flat screen TV, Cuttin' Up exuded professionalism on every level. Except one: service. The wait was forever and there was clearly a need to pause every five minutes for impromptu debates about not-so-earth shattering topics (how involved should parents be in their children's athletic careers, what are we -the barbers-ordering for lunch today, who owes who money, etc.). As a neighborhood joint, with a clientel that all seemed to know the barbers, this place might be a good spot to relive the joys of the movie Barber Shop and catch the game. and the location across from the Washington Center does make this convenient, but that's where the good news ends. As for living up to the motto printed on their business cards: "We Strive for the Perfect Cut", these folks need to get their eyes back on the prize. And out of my wallet...I almost forgot to mention that $20 is the cost for a basic fade. Ouch!!! read more

I used to travel up to Bethesda to get a haircut before but since I've found Juan, I haven't had to be inconvenienced since. Came here for a fade and a shape up. WIthout prompting, I was continuously reminded by my barber that he could cut asian hair just as well as other types of hair. This should have been a sign.. I had my front lined up and when cutting my widow's peak off my barber pushed so hard that it hurt and bled. The bleeding continued all night and for the next couple weeks I had a huge scab on my forehead from where he pushed in the clipper too hard. After getting home, I had to cut my hair in my bathroom as the entire back and side was lopsided and not even. Asian hair grows straight out and any slight difference in length shows! Too bad I didn't catch it in the barbershop (easier to see black hair against a white wall). Service was very friendly and fairly quick but won't be coming back here and wouldn't recommend it for anyone with asian hair and yes I just ended with a run-on sentence. read more

Wow $25 for a clipper cut! I am use to paying $15. I waited 20 minutes only to have one of the barbers who spent most of his time talking finally tell me there was gonna be someone else before me. And I was the only one waiting. Why didn't you tell me that 20 minutes ago?$&@!. I work at DC CC and would not recommend this spot to any of my co-workers. read more

I'm a summer transplant here in DC. I've been to one other barber in the DMV who Yelp claimed was the best in the area. That guy butchered me! I came here and hung out in this place for a little bit. Stoney, the owner, ended up cutting my hair. He had me chit chatting for a bit. This was cool since I'm not a talker. I told him about my last experience with a barber. He responded, there's no such thing as a had haircut. I told him that I was from Central Florida, which he claims is the area to great barbers. I agreed. Stoney gave me one of the cleanest cuts. He took care of my frizzy Dominican hair like his grew the same. Fantastic price considering he's a DC shop. $20. Only tips to share are: Remember cash unless you're cool with the $25 card requirement. He's worth more than a $5 though. He doesn't take Discover. Not a long wait, but doesn't take too many appointments. Wouldn't take mine anyway. I waited maybe a half hour. Definitely worth the wait. I'll definitely be back. read more

Came at around 12:30pm on a Friday and waited for more than an hour to get a cut. The barber was very nice, but he needed a lot more help. He told 5 of us waiting that it wouldn't be a long wait - and he continued to tell everyone coming in that it wouldn't be long, even though you could see it would be. He promised another barber was coming in at 1pm, but she didn't show up until 2pm. My cut was fine and the price ($25 for men's cut) is reasonable for DC, but this place needs some help when it comes to customer service and overall management. I couldn't disagree more with Adrian below, and seriously...saturday afternoon. Everybody and their mom gets their haircut on Saturday afternoon. It's as childish as complaining that the check-out line at Safeway is long at 7:00 PM right after everybody gets off work. o_O I just went here based on the other yelp reviews I read because I wanted something close to my new place. Stoney cut my hair and he was great. I gave him minimal direction because.. I don't know anything about hair. But he ran with it and gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. For only 20 bucks..for a place in the middle of the city. He seems like a really good guy who is genuinely interested in his clients and was fun to talk to. As for the barbershop reference - that's just tasteless and completely off the mark (not that I've seen any Barbershop movie but based on the commercials I'd say it's something like a hair cuttery version of The Nutty Professor or something). There was a wide variety of people that walked in through the door, everyone spoke well and behaved respectfully, and even the kids (who I'm assuming just got out after school and were waiting on their father) were very well-behaved. It really is the kind of place where anyone would feel welcome, and Stoney definitely does his part to maintain that atmosphere. Definitely recommend this place. read more

HORRIBLE experience. I asked for the same haircut I had (medium-length men's hair with a part combed in the middle), and said it had been about a month since my last haircut. The woman completely ignored me and essentially gave me a fade, with the longest hair on my head being about an inch and a half. Rather than take off a month's worth of growth, she took off about 3 months' worth. At the end of the haircut, she said "Now you don't have to comb it!" WTF--seriously?? Avoid this place at all costs unless you are interested in a completely random change to your hairstyle. read more

Got a great haircut from Stoney, today. On top of being a great barber, Stoney is very personable and professional. He greets everyone like family and makes his customers feel right at home. In terms of the cut, he knew exactly what he was doing. He asked what I wanted and he knew how to get there. Added bonus was that his price ($25) is extremely reasonable for this area of DC where many places are charging upwards of $60. I'll definitely come back! read more

There is little to redeem from the past reviews once you experience this place yourself. The guys working at the shop unapologetically watch TV and banter with each other while they take upwards of an hour to cut a single man's hair. They also allow their friends to wander in and out of the shop and move their friends in line before everyone else. I've also got the sense that they are not open to servicing other cultures than their own. With the neighborhood changing rapidly, it will be good riddance to see this place go. read more

Rule of thumb: Never call a proud Columbian woman a Mexican! Also the owner's name is Stoney, not Smokey. Not trying to start any beef but let's just state the facts here. I gave it a high rating because I went in not knowing what to expect and got quick, easy, and simple service, and an exceptional haircut by Lettie! I was so surprised because I gave her simple instructions for my cut and got a 5-star cut for only $20! You really can't beat that. A review commenting on wait time at a barber shop is a little ludicrous and irrelevant. I went in on a Friday evening and was in and out in less than 30 minutes. I recommend Lettie or Stoney as they will deliver quality cuts, very rare in black barber shops in this town. read more

Smokey listened to me and consistently stopped his work to find out if I was happy with the length of the cut. I can't comment on the wait, as I went at about 12:15 on a Thursday afternoon (just got back not long ago.) I walked in, hung my jacket, and sat down with Letty. From that point on, the experience was everything that a barber shop should be. Some quick instruction about what I wanted, a few pauses to check that I was satisfied, easy conversation, and a solid result. Elapsed time: 15 minutes. What else can I say? My hair looks exactly like I wanted it to. I wasn't forced into some awkward conversation about the weather. The employees were friendly. The atmosphere was clean and relaxed. Top notch stuff. My only criticism is that Food Network was the channel currently on the TV. Any proper barber shop would stick to hunting or fishing, but this is an urban area. Also, I get the feeling that had I asked, they'd have gladly changed to whatever channel I wanted. I guess I can overlook this. Five stars. read more

SO, First off I am black (Afro-Nigerian to be exact). I take care of my hair reasonably well so it's not at all nappy, using protective styles like bantu knots & two strand twists. After hearing the most recent reviews I decided to why not go head and take a dive and check this place for myself. Worst decision I've made in a while... the 4th of July weekend was approaching and I really didn't have time to go to my REAL barber back in Baltimore after work. I really just needed a place that could cut Black people hair not too far. The guy who I think runs the shop greeted me at the door. I sit down and just take in the atmosphere. Not horrible décor, cuz I've been to worse but the places still KNEW how to cut my hair. I didn't want to ask for too much just a simple fade on the sides and to trim my hairline in the front. The guy seemed hesitant to cut my hair, I assume he was use to people getting regulars every time his clients come in. There were also people being pushed ahead of me even though I came in way before them, but I let it slide cuz, where else could I go after 6? He was OD rough with my hair it got to a point where I thought I was bleeding cuz I kept feeling something odd back there. the hair cut itself wasn't well blended and I told him exactly what I wanted. I was dissatisfied to say the least. Hell I don't even think he used a accurate amount of alcohol as my sides were itching and irritated afterwards. Long story short I wouldn't recommend this place, and that's the last time they'll see my face in that place. read more

Consistent with several comments posted, the service was horrible. After one hour and 10 minutes I walked out without a haircut. At entry around 1:30pm, the door was locked (another customer let me in). I waited patiently as the only barber finished one customer and then took forever on the next. He never said a word...No hello, no sense of order, no thanks for stopping by, no I'll be with you as soon as...NOTHING! After watching the most inefficient haircut one could imagine...rework at every step, I waited anxiously to be called next. He skipped me and called someone that he knew by name that arrived after me. I quietly walked out and will never return. This was my first and last experience with this shop. I read some previous comments related to race, I'm a person of color and I believe that this shop is an equal opportunity provider of unacceptable service. read more

Juan cut my hair. What a !@#$%&! mess. After beseeching him to tell me in advance if he was uncomfortable or inexperienced w/ cutting women's hair, and sharing my horror stories of the mannish marine haircuts other barbers had given me, that's exactly the cut he gave me. Not feminine in the least and worse yet, not even at all. It's forgivable if a male barber who is used to having male clients can't quite manage the subtle curve of a women's barber cut (even though he insisted that he could), it's another if he can't cut nappy hair evenly at all. After spending over an hour shaping and shearing and picking out and inspecting my tiny 2 inch bush, he concluded that he "thought it was pretty much even", but advised me to come back when it was less busy to have him take even more time on it. I was immediately unhappy when I saw the mullet fro I'd ended up with. About a half inch around the hairline and three inches on the crown. While I appreciated his offer to keep working on it, I don't think a quick shape up should take two visits and 90+ minutes of my time. He was also quite a chatterbox and would put down the clippers every time he spoke- which I found to be annoying given how long this simple haircut was taking and how many other people were waiting in line for him to finish. There were several fellas who walked in the shop and left when they learned that the other barbers weren't around. Several more sat in line looking worried as Juan worked on me. I feel like I now know why. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this particular barber at all. This haircut goes into the hall of fame as one of my all-time worst and every time I look in the mirror I feel like I've been jacked again. read more

Adrian above needs to get real. This is a barber shop on a Saturday--you might have to wait. I always call ahead and make an appointment and have never had to wait more than 15 or 20 minutes. Bring reading material if you can't handle a wait. Even if you don't, they have at least 50 back issues of Men's Health and other good magazines there for you to peruse while you wait, not to mention a huge flat screen tv. I've forgotten her name, but the older latina lady in the right corner (Lina?) is such a sweetheart and gives me a fantastic haircut every time. She doesn't grind the clipper into the scalp like some do. She also always shaves my neck with a straight blade and gives me a little shoulder massage to finish it off. Fantastic. I never have to worry about getting a crooked or stupid looking hair cut. It's always perfect. The black guy on the right, Stoney, is really pleasant too and his clients seem to all be returning customers. I highly recommend this place. And $20 for a legit, reliable haircut in DC is not bad at all. The only place I know with a cheaper price is the Hair Cuttery and they can be very inconsistent. At cuttin it up I know I always am going to get the same nice lady who does a great job. Go here--but let me go first! read more
