After a high school and college career of competitive sports, I became a road runner, culminating in the NYC Marathon in '95. Two years later, I was a chronic limper. Eleven years later, I had both hips replaced. The discomfort before and after the replacements had caused my body to veer far from the sacred geometries of the body. Fascia and other forms of support had evolved to "help". At the same time, however, they locked my body into the wrong positions. They had "robbed Peter to pay Paul." I have practiced yoga for 10 years. I thought that it would fix everything, but I struggled with chronic back pain after exercise. Someone recommended Rachel and I have since experienced a new, wider level of recovery. Rachel's work broke down all of the solid, incorrect, misplaced fascial and muscular supports that had evolved over time. I could barely walk and was completely freaking out about making the trip back to NYC. I called right at 9 am sharp to see if she could squeeze me in between a 11:00am hair appointment and 2:00pm train. Luckily for me, she could! Her space is beautiful - peaceful, tasteful, and comforting (dare I say womb-like?). Lots of natural light, good temperature, and the softest sheets I've ever felt on a massage table. As is typical, we started out by talking about what was going on in my body and getting my health history. Right away I knew that this experience would be different. Kristen asked deeper questions than I've ever received from other massage therapist! After doing a quick assessment, she talked me through a few different modalities and asked which one spoke to me the most. She also asked if I wanted to focus exclusively on the ankle or spend most, but not all of our time there. I loved the agency, consent, and respect she gave me - so rare and such a gift. Then the massage itself - masterful. Every now and then you find a massage therapist who knows how to find ALL the spots and read your body to give the perfect amount of pressure. In addition to the actual bodywork, she also guided me through some deeper energetic and nervous system work to unlock deeper patterns of injury and trauma. At the end, she did a check-in and then showed me how to ground my energy to close out our time together and not be as vulnerable going back into the real world. I was able to do small ankle rolls and one day later (as I write this) have 90% of my mobility back in the ankle, plus no pain.
