I only have great things to say about this place (besides the upstairs bathroom placement. its a bit confusing as to why its like that but whatevs) 1) the vibes are actually elite. To enter The Heavy Feather, you first enter the Slippery Slope, a red-lighted bar with plenty of standing room, skee ball on one end and a dance floor on the other. Somewhere about midway into the Slippery Slope, you'll find a small stairway that you can slide up into The Heavy Feather. The stairway is just long enough to know that you're entering a different area but not nearly long enough for the transition into The Heavy Feather. The moment you crest the stairs and round the corner, you will exit what was most certainly Chicago and enter what might well be a resort bar somewhere in the pacific. Not knowing what I was getting into at the time, it took quite a moment of adjustment to take it all in. Somewhat early on a Friday night, there was still plenty of space around the standard sized bar and seating area. I can't wait to come back. Vibes are immaculate. We arrived around 10:30 on a Friday and had no wait to get in Slippery Slope (downstairs) or The Heavy Feather. With standing room only we grabbed a menu (complete with photos of their signature cocktails) and placed our order just before a booth opened up. All the drinks were great and themed to the 70's decor and music. I was begrudgingly drug out the door after one drink to make our reservation down the street. The music wasn't overbearing and I was able to hear my partner just fine. It seemed like a great date spot as I noticed several couples sitting at the bar. The drinks were beautiful to look but a bit of a mystery in that they both tasted quite alcoholic and yet I felt quite sober afterwards. If you'd have told me there's a reputable cocktail bar above Slippery slope, I never would have believed it. But, amazingly there is! There were 5of us the other day and it was rather full even just at like 9pm. We got upstairs no problem but had to wait for a table. I ordered the devil's arithmetic which was superb. Really smooth and well balanced. It had bourbon, cognac, winter honey, and bitters. Boozy yes but not too sweet despite the honey. It was so good that I got a second! The pictures here are extremely misleading. 4 of us were having a good time, bar hopping in the Wicker/Logan area and we wanted to continue having good cocktails and saw the Heavy Father when Billy Sunday had no room for us. Looking at the pictures we thought it was going to be a nice cocktail bar, not that loud, easy to carry a conversation. However it was really none of the above. The Heavy Feather is the 2nd floor of Slippery Slope. The Heavy Feather is basically Slippery Slope 2.0. The place was packed and playing old school music which I liked. We were able to get seated at a table (there's no host or waitress). We were waiting for someone to attend to our table but no one came after about 20-30 minutes of waiting. When we got to the bar one of the bartenders rejected us because we said we were at a table, however no one was walking around to take our order. Odd. At the end of the day, the cocktails were amateur hour. This is not a cocktail bar. This is slippery slope 2.0. I got the jailbreaker. It was awful. Bartender shorted our drinks big time. Never filled to the top and had to use ice to make it seem like it was full. Amateur hour. If you want to go on a date trying to get some action, or trying to get some action not going on a date, this place is for you. It's Slippery Slope 2.0. I won't be back, I'm to old for this. LOL. Logan Square is full of outstanding bars! This is definitely one of them! The 70s disco music and the dimly lit and beautiful bar make this place so fun! The cocktails are great too! Just be careful that some chairs are on wheels and some tables are a little wobbly which might lead to an accidental glass breaking (the bartenders quickly cleaned up the mess which were just glasses of water thank goodness). Massaging, booming floors provided free from the folks at the Slippery Slope, the Heavy Feather is a laid back lounge set with wooden railings and a stuffed wild looking beast. The place is cool. There are 2 places in Logan Square that you have to wait in line for, this is one of those places. At 9pm on Saturday, it wasn't bad. I'm not sure if there is a line within a line to get up here. I imagine that could happen. Anyway, not complaining, just an FYI. I came with a few friends and I always take a small sip of everyone's drink to assess. Nothing super crafty stood out from the list and the drinks were ok. Not bad and at around $10/$12, I was ehhh. read more

Let me start by saying how charming the space was and how wonderful the drinks were once we finally gained admittance. The doorman, however, was a different story. Our group did not arrive all at once. Five of us arrived first and the remainder were to meet at intervals. When we arrived, the doorman made the two ladies in our group throw out their water bottles when he checked their bags. He was quite gruff and demanding, but we thought "when in Rome" and let it go. When the next two ladies of our group arrived they went through the same treatment only now he insisted on taking their photographs (!?!?) so nobody else would use their identification. Weird, and slightly Gestapo, but again, we let it go. When the final member of our group arrived, the same rigamarole with the bag check, photograph taking, and water disposal. However, this time when my friend attempted to take one final swig of her water bottle, the doorman unceremoniously snatched it from her grasp as she was raising it to her lips. This is legally defined as battery and it is a good thing for your Napoleonic doorman she did not call the police. Instead she told him to put her bottle where the sun does not shine and he told her to get out. Now I know every establishment has its own rules, but the Draconian measures in place to get into this bar! That doorman though. Is that really the face Heavy Feather wants to present to the public? Needless to say, you have lost ten customers. Which is a pity, because the room really was comfortable and the drinks delicious. The bar staff were also nice. We will spread the word to our friends that they should avoid coming here if they wish to keep their dignity intact. The entire interaction cast a pall over our evening. So I am a BIG fan of the interior and ambiance. The seating is great. I think the low bar situation with the retro armchairs is unique and not often seen elsewhere. The only other place I think I've seen this is at Watershed? It gets a bit awkward to order from behind seated people though. I like the intimate setting and I also like the second floor aspect of the establishment! Definitely a good date spot or a spot to catch up with girlfriends. If you get there too late though, standing kind of sucks. Everyone looks comfortable and you are just reminded of how bummed you are because you have to stand like a vulture behind everyone... waiting for that opportunity to swoop in on an empty chair. I really, really was not impressed by the cocktails. I just did not enjoy anything I ordered, nor did I think anything on the menu sounded particularly good. I was kind of upset about this. I really liked the low rolling chairs at the bar because I don't think I've ever been somewhere that didn't have tall chairs at the bar. Seems like a great spot for a date or a night out with friends since there are some booths along the wall. I liked that there were three gender neutral bathrooms. Always a win! I refuse to stand in line when there's an empty men's room nearby that serves the same purpose. Careful not to go downstairs without changing your glass for a mug as they have to stay upstairs. I came with friends and ordered a variety of cocktails and shots (all were good). The bartenders were super friendly and even bought a shot for one of my friends. Luckily, this bar sits right on the second floor above Slipper Slope, definitely a hidden gem. Right away we loved the ambiance and the interior. We were thrown back to 70s vibe with a bit of cheeky contemporary feel. The dimmed lighting and aesthetics were noticeable details that gave this bar an intimate setting. It's a great place to hit before the night draws near as the crowds begin to bustle in. They had a great drink selection with Cocktails $10 a pop and Beer $8 or less and they were all very good. I personally got the Mudslide which was a perfect dessert after a meal. One downside is seating. Depending on when you go, 9:30 PM or later you may just be hovering around the armchairs located at the bar or watching for a free seat. Otherwise, there are some standing tables and intimate booth sitting trickling around. Annnnnd you'll have to awkwardly get the attention of the bartenders over those sitting in the armchairs. We went the night after the 4th of July. They had just opened & it was a pretty relaxed vibe upstairs. The first thing that caught our eyes were the amazing rolling desk-chairs-ala-1970 that served as the bar stools & ran the entire length of the bar. Such a brilliant & cozy choice. We ordered classic cocktails off menu & they were excellent. Both of our bartenders were super friendly & obviously very accomplished. We loved everything about the place so far, including the cool oil weeping lamps that everyone's parents had in their living rooms in the 70's. Our one criticism came later into our stay when we noticed a lot of revelers from Slippery Slope downstairs coming up to join our much more subdued gathering upstairs while carting their bottled beers & bottled cocktails that are decidedly cheaper than the fine drinks we were enjoying. Hopefully, in the future, there is a way to keep the beverages purchased/consumed mutually exclusive between the two spaces. It seems they really are trying to make Heavy Feather a more adult affair than the dance party below but I think a more enjoyable evening could be had by all if the bottled cocktails & beer specials didn't mingle directly with the much pricier made to order drinks at The Heavy Feather. If leaves those of us paying more leaving feeling a little duped. I still think we'll come back again once the hype calms down & maybe there will be a person at the bottom of the stairs inviting people to come upstairs, relax & enjoy an expertly made to order cocktail. read more

The Heavy Feather has been mentioned or categorized in other publications as a "Fern Bar." For those of you who are not aware of what that means, it's basically a term used for a singles bar where people meet for sexual hookups. My visit here got me feelin' like, "Where's the ferns?" I mean, where's the beef too? Shoot. I didn't see anything I liked. Look it up. Fern bars are supposed to be decorated with ferns. However, this would explain everyone's trouble with choosing a decade to describe this bar. Prepare yourself as I channel my inner Heather Graham from Boogie Nights. In 1965, of all places, T.G.I. Fridays opened the first fern bar in New York. Along with the rollout, birthed the lemon drop martini. I did not see this on the menu, but it is on there. I would have ordered it. The drinks seem to be made in a Speakeasy fashion. Speakeasies started in the '20/'30s, obviously as a place that sold liquor illegally. Later on, it evolved into a term coined in the '80s to describe controlling the tone of your voice as to not bother the neighbors when you were running a bar without a liquor license. Last, I have a hutch, and a lamp, made in the '70s that I could easily put in this bar, and it would match all of the wood fixtures perfectly. I think that's where the local drunks are pulling the '70s vibe without realizing it. I'm not sure what's going on with the taxidermy animal on the wall. I think it's a bear? I like it. It would seem to me that lots of bars generally did this in the '80s. I'm hoping this sorts out any confusion in terms of what decade is happening in this bar. I took a star away from Heavy Feather for not being sexual enough. I read vibes, man. It's unusually dark in this bar. Ladies, get on that. The lighting will hide your crow's feet and hopefully your age. Bonus if you're a cougar on the prowl. I really wish there were other party favors offered here. The atmosphere definitely provides the right setting. I just don't think people who come here get it. On my next visit, I better see people openly making out. read more

The decor is very cool, without a doubt. However, the sultry, lounge-y decor doesn't mesh well with the rowdiness of the guests who frequent it. So, while I appreciate the usual vibe of a retro lounge like Heavy Feather, it's cancelled out by the loud patrons. Also, there aren't enough restrooms on the second floor where the lounge is, above Slippery Slope. I brought my early-50s mom with me for an after-dinner cocktail over the weekend, and since a long line had formed waiting for the (unisex) restrooms upstairs, she decided to try the ones downstairs at Slippery Slope. The bouncer guarding the entrance/exit of Heavy Feather wouldn't let my mom into Slippery Slope without her ID. He told her she could go and fetch her purse to show him her ID, then he'd let her pass. Again, my (albeit stylish) mom is in her early 50s. Kind of a tactless way to treat a customer, I'd say. I'm a fan of Slippery Slope on the right kind of night, but I won't be back to Heavy Feather for a long time. read more

This bar has a great vibe to it ! The bar is filled with plush booths, and chairs that make it the perfect place to lounge around with your date or friends. The bar plays a variety of mostly oldies from the 70s, and the volume is low enough that you can engage in conversation. I've had 3 different drinks from this place, and they all were excellent. The bartenders are talented at making high quality craft cocktails. Each of their standard cocktails on the menu have a picture, a list of the ingredients, and the price. Most of the cocktails are $10, but a few are $12. I only had the $10 cocktails, but all of them were well worth the price because of the taste and strength of them. The difference between Slippery Slope and Heavy Feather is like night and day, and if you don't expect it, you'll be in for a pleasant surprise when you see that one floor is all that separates a loud museum of drinking and dancing to a classy, elegant, and altogether delicious period cocktail bar. Drinks are in-line with many other cocktail bars in Logan square, which is to say fairly affordable as lounges go in the city(~$10), and are across the board pretty great here. Seems to have more of a whiskey focus, though that may have just been coincidence given the rotating menu. In any case, all the drinks were strong, but well balanced with excellent use of accessory ingredients. And overall great ambience, provided you can get past the lines and snag a booth then you're sure to have a good time whether on a date or with a group of friends. read more

I love this place! I typically start off with a beer downstairs (at Slippery Slope) and then head upstairs to get a classic cocktail at this place. Every time I take a friend here they always seem amused by the "secret" spot status that this place demands just by location- I mean...a bar inside of a bar but hidden upstairs? It only makes sense. The cozy eccentric design of the place reminds as if Elvis during his Hawaii movie runs showed up and Frank Sinatra stopped by for a shoutout. Even the bathrooms are adorable. It really engulfs you in atmosphere. I even noticed the hidden little fake (but hidden) twinkle candles hiding out behind the bottles at the bar. Very cozy, warm, sophisticated, and fun! read more
