This is the most precious hidden gem in Newton! We got there nearer to their 2PM close time yet the place was still all hustle and bustle...Signs of a well-run, supremely clean, and wildly popular eatery! Our server, Cassidy's sparkle was just as abundant and perfect as the meal itself. Pancakes are at least 12" across or darn close! Omelets made with the freshest ingredients and done to perfection. Did I mention this diner is kept CLEAN?? Owner was on site working very hard, but she couldn't have been more thankful and appreciative of our glowing verbal review of the first time visit when we had asked to speak with her. Traveling through NC and found this cute place. We ordered our food and sat outside to eat. Ordered scrambled eggs with bacon, wheat toast and fresh fruit. My husband got an omelette with spinach, ham, and cheddar cheese. It came with choice of side-he got home fries and toast. Got both meals along with a milk for under $20. Very tasty!! I had heard good things about this place so I was looking forward to the chance to give them a go... i'm big fan of biscuits gravy and I'm always looking for good sausage gravy that nobody seems to be able to make. So I asked waitress (whose name escapes me but she was terrific) if it was a true sausage gravy. To her credit, she said no, that it was a white gravy with a couple sausage patties chopped up. "Most places" would try to pass it off as a sausage gravy! So I had to give it ago. It was as described and it was quite nice. The biscuit was very moist and the gravy quite tasty, plus the two eggs on top that I had ordered!!! A friend that had joined me ordered the hash which he said it was very nice. I'm looking forward to my next visit but I'm disappointed that my wife will not be able to join me... You see, they are closed on the weekends. Hopefully this will change! I normally don't write reviews since most of the places I visit are already swamped with reviews but being as this is located in my hometown (and just opened) I knew I had to write a little blurb. The reason I came to The Hen & Egg was for the cream cheese and lox. Given this is Newton and not NYC or Charlotte my expectations were kind of low. Its not on par with the legendary Russ and Daughters cream cheese and lox but it was damn good! The bagel was perfectly proportioned and had a great ratio of the cream cheese, lox, capers, tomato, and red onions. I ordered it on the everything bagel which added to the taste of the schmear and toppings. I was kind of expecting it to be overpoweringly salty but to my delight it wasn't! I got this to go but will definitely be back another Friday to dine in and check the rest of the menu out. read more

I have been to this restaurant many times because I like to support local businesses. The food seems to have gone down in quality since they opened. Very little spices are being used to flavor the food so many of the lunch specials seem very bland (ie..are beef). Many of the items on the menu are out. Easier to ask what they have than what they don't have. All the staff seem very upbeat and outgoing except the petite older waitress with a northern accent. A couple times, I thought it was me but I have figured out that she don't know how to deliver what she wants to say tactfully. It always seems to come off very harsh. I took notice that all other staff smile and conversate with the tables that they are serving but this waitress don't. She seems to not enjoy what she is doing. Hard to enjoy your time when you feel like you are a bother. I do hope that my opinion changes the next time I go in because this community needs restaurants. read more

Fairly mediocre after the reviews we had read. They were busy and we waited about 30 minutes for a table. Now don't get me wrong I don't mind a wait for great food. But what we had was over rated. Let me just start by saying they have CHOLULA. I had an amazing egg white omelette, wheat toast grilled that our server recommended (sooooooo good) & fruit. Very sweet place about 5 mi off the interstate. Not far, just a block off town square. They have an espresso machine so if you need that in the morning to get started it's there. My family ate here this week and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.. the Waitress Courtney took almost 10 minutes to acknowledge us! Once We finally ordered and got my food i heard the waitress talking to who I assume is her boyfriend about how she couldn't wait to go home and get high! Needless to say she had a bad attitude and seemed kinda impaired as it was! Our breakfast came out and it was ice cold.. after being disappointed by cold food and finding out our waitress was waiting to get high, I decided to pay my tab and leave! I've only had the breakfast here but it is amazing. You can tell the food is fresh. The veggie scrambler was really good, loved that it includes avocado. My only suggestion would be to offer turkey bacon for those of us who don't eat pork. read more

Such a cute place for breakfast! The staff was super friendly and the food was really good. I had the Monte Cristo and it was good, the balsamic glaze really hit the spot for me. The only thing we did not care for was the chicken that came with my husband's chicken and biscuits. He loved the gravy and said the biscuits were on point. But they were frozen tenders. If they would bread and fry their own chicken it would have made that dish so much better. Will definitely go back, hope they change their chicken though. read more

Have been twice, once for breakfast and once for lunch. Had a beautiful omelette with bacon, cheddar & avocado, hash browns and toast. Perfection! And then another day I went for lunch and had a chicken salad wrap with deviled eggs for the side. Yum! Want to go back to try the other dishes and sides that sounded so good. Kind of agree with another reviewer that having the TV on Fox news (both visits) is a negative. It makes me feel unwelcome, so I sat with my back to it. Waitstaff is very friendly. The hubs & I came here for a late breakfast on a weekday a couple months ago and loved it. "Breakfast served all day" it says right on the front window. The food was great, the service was friendly and we had an all-around good experience. Went back today (Saturday) at 11:20am and were greeted with "Sorry, we close at 11:00 on Saturdays." WHAT THE HELL KINDA RESTAURANT CLOSES AT 11:00am ON SATURDAY?!?!?!?! Geeez, it hardly seems worth the effort of firing up the griddle! read more

I ate here today for the very, first time and will definitely be returning. I love all of the home cooked vegetables listed on the menu.i ordered the meatloaf, macaroni n cheese and collard greens. The wait staff was so friendly and the food delivery was fast. The meatloaf was good, but a little disappointing. The texture was not what I expected. The sides tasted homemade and were so yummy. This is the best spot I have ever eaten at in downtown Newton and probably all of Newton. It is very good and very affordable. Portion sizes are huge and a great deal for the price. Everything I've tried has been great and I've had a different meal each time. You must try if you are looking for a little spot with lots of options.
