The food was okay except for the fried pickles were horrible. I was disappointed that the only desert choices were banana pudding or pineapple upside down cake. I was hoping for pie or cake. We got the banana pudding and it was delicious. They were very crowded and busy and we were there around 11:30a. The service was good though. I don't think I would go again. read more

2020 and I am buying myself a new home! Thus my need to drive from Charlotte to Hickory to see the IRS. "Why not visit them in-person in Charlotte?" you ask. Good question -- because the wait for an in-person visit with the IRS in the Queen City is much like the wait for customer service in the Beetlejuice version of the Afterlife. AND . . . because then I wouldn't have occasion to have breakfast at the Gold Mine in Hickory. This place is delightful. The dining room is scrupulously clean, the waitstaff is friendly, and the food hot, delicious, and very affordable. I ordered a usual pair of eggs, over-easy, along with some bacon and toast and gravy. In no time flat these arrived at my corner table where I washed them down with coffee (dark roast in my cup) and some water. From the looks of the menu, the Gold Mine Cafe is also a good place for lunch with burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, and a nice selection of plate-lunches and daily features to keep the regulars coming back for more. It also seems they have some rather tasty looking homemade cakes available for your sweet tooth. If you find yourself in Hickory looking for a great breakfast spot, check out the Gold Mine Cafe. They're open from 6am until 2pm and Friday until 8pm. So when the IRS is through with you, drop in to spend what remains of your money after taxes. My favorite breakfast place. They have a great special and all three of us can eat with a drink for about 20 bucks. Very clean place, and they actually know how to cook your eggs! My mom is a bit picky with her eggs and when we go out I cringe when she complains. That has never happened at the Gold Mine. The service is always great. They seem to have more staff than most places this size. read more

There's a certain type of restaurant that people familiar with road trips or driving long distances are probably familiar with. It's the type of restaurant typically beside or within a gas station, with no more advertising than a shoddily put together sign out on the road, advertising they're open for business (and typically only for a few hours at a time). Gold Mine Cafe is this type of restaurant, in all the right ways. The first thing you'll notice is it's PACKED with locals. Everytime I've been, there have been tons of people eating here for its relatively small size. Always a good sign. The second thing you'll notice is the menu is huge! Offering a vast breakfast selection, several daily specials and a large variety of dinner entrees, there's something for everyone here. The person who brought me recommended the chicken club sandwich, and was that ever a recommendation. The chicken club is the epitome of American decadence; fried chicken tenders on buttered Texas toast with cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo. Everything comes together beautifully and the sandwich is absolutely delicious. The crinkle cut fries are salted and fried perfectly. The service always has that friendly southern smile and the food here is incredibly low priced. Overall a very worthwhile stop and one I recommend. read more

I have always had amazing service at this place and delicious food I generally always get an omelet or a stack of pancakes the omelets are huge in portion and I always have to take the other half home when I get stuck of Pancakes I get there delicious strawberry jam that is House made it is not too sweet has plenty of fruit in it it is perfect. Some food is pretty good, but not good enough for their prices. Their burger is maybe the worst around.. Basically a bland, tasteless Bubba Burger you can buy frozen at the store. Hot dog and fries are meh. Hamburger steak is the same as the burger. Chicken wrap chicken is mostly breading. Breakfast is just ok. All basic stuff, and not good enough for the price. We've been here many times and have always experienced great food and service. Today was had a little misunderstanding. We ran in on our way to a doctors appointment and, to save time, we just ordered a couple of burgers and 2 teas. My hubby got a "plate" which included french fries and I ordered just the burger, assuming I would only be charged for a burger. Found out at check out ($17) you pay for the side whether you get it or not. Had I known that, I would have ordered onion rings..... total bust ($) and I'll check the menu next time. Would have been nice if she told me that when I was ordering. The food and service was still good. read more

We just stopped in on our way back home to Kansas City, MO from High Point, NC. What a great find!! The salads and homemade dressings were fresh and savory. The only reason I can't give this five stars is because they are not open for dinner! Delicious, fresh, large portions. Super sweet servers! You definitely need to come out and try this place. BBQ is done right, big burgers too! Wish we had saved room for the homemade desserts but that will have to be on our next visit! read more
