I wish I would have read these reviews before engaging with HLG. We have a small business that worked with these folks for a little over a year. The only benefit we received from HLG was moving our Quickbooks system to the Online program. We could have done that. Then last December, they simply told us they were splitting the firm and we would be sent to another accountant. No explanation, no nothing. Now, 6 months later, they sent us a bill, said they were going to a collection agent for payment, and our accountant just found out we paid them long ago! Really wanted to like this local company, but ultimately was disappointed on every level with the appalling oversight, lack of communication, and ultimate incompetence of this firm. I worked primarily with Anthony, who was super nice and perhaps was not fully to blame for all the errors that occurred with my very simple, straightforward tax filing. Andrew and Jake were also helping along the way, so it's hard to say exactly where things went wrong. Anyway, here were my issues with Henry Levy: -they listed my occupation incorrectly, which, had I not caught the mistake, would have been a violation of my Canadian work permit -they sent me my tax return to sign to the wrong address (whoever copied the address from the return to the envelope missed a number in my address and mistook an "S" for a "5"), which would have been merely annoying except they waited until the very last day for me to file to send it to me while I was out of the country -thank goodness the delivery person had the correct number for me and called me to say the documents were undeliverable due to the non-existent address -due to the above situation, I had to leave work early, borrow a car from a friend, and drive to the location where the delivery person had left my tax returns *in a completely different city* -absolutely no acknowledgement of their error on Henry Levy's part -the procrastination was a pattern with Henry Levy filing tax returns year after year, with either waiting till days before a deadline to remind me something needed to be filed or mailing me documents at the very last minute - this only added to the stress of filing taxes, rather than alleviate it (the whole reason I hired them in the first place) -they don't follow their own policies - I received an email from Henry Levy describing packages with included services, the most basic being getting return calls -the *one time* I called Anthony, ever, and left a message to ask about my tax return, I never got a call back Well, I could honestly go on and on, but the list of complaints seems to be quite long enough as it is. While I do appreciate the efforts of Henry Levy, ultimately they only made my taxes a bigger headache and made more than one nearly fatal errors in my, again, very simple returns. It's nice to see that some people have had positive experiences, so perhaps I was just unlucky. My only advice would be to avoid Henry Levy if you're not local, as it's hard to get hold of them from abroad (can't just walk in), and mail makes things a bit slower/more stressful. I have since found a new CPA who is meticulous, happens to charge a fraction of the cost of what I was paying to Henry Levy, and comes with more personalized and practical advice. Sometimes higher cost doesn't equate to better service. The long and short of it: Henry Levy provided careless, sloppy service and is now, nearly a year after I told them I would no longer be in need of their services, just sending me a letter to tell me they've terminated our professional working relationship and to download digital copies of my previous years returns, as in the case that I might need copies of paper files in their possession in the future, they will provide them at their discretion and charge me for the copies. Good to know. Try at your own risk - hopefully your experience will be better than mine! read more

I hate to say it, but we've had problems with the Henry Levy Group ever since our old accountant, Ryan Van Valer, left. Ryan was great. However in 2014, we had to deal with vaguely explained delays in our return, we had to keep pestering them each month on the status of our return, there was an opaque billing process, and worst of all, a massive unexpected and unexplained jump in the amount of our invoice - from $1175 to over $2000, after being told that additional fees would be "minimal". An $800 increase to an $1175 bill is not "minimal" by anyone's standards. Timeline of events: In June, we received an original invoice for $1175. in July, we asked our accountant, Henry Chen, how much it would cost to file separately rather than jointly. His reply was that "It doesn't take much more work to do filing separate so the additional fee is minimal". Based on that response, we decided to go ahead with the work and believed it would be done shortly. In August, we checked in and were told there were small corrections that needed to be made. In September, we checked in again and were told there was another delay, this time with our accountant's manager. Shortly after this, our original invoice was destroyed from their system (I kept a copy) and a new invoice was issued for $2000, without explanation. In October, we checked in again, and the return was filed barely before the October IRS deadline. Now we're being told that the change from a $1200 invoice to a $2000 one is not an accounting error but was intended. How is that a "minimal" difference, as we were told? We never would have agreed to the work based on that amount. This was not explained to use beforehand. All in all, an unsatisfying experience. read more

Henry Levy Group failed to file both my personal and business taxes on time. They then lied to me about the consequences. The net cost to me will be well in excess of $50,000. Let me repeat that: doing business with Henry Levy Group will cost me well over $50,000. That's not getting into the fact that as a consequence of their incompetence and dishonesty I will likely face years of audits. Henry Levy Group refuses to compensate me for the direct results of their clear and unmistakable failure to perform. An absolute disaster of a firm. I have filed complaints with the Accounting board and with BBB. I am in the process of retaining a tax litigator. read more

I went to their Pleasanton office to handle some complicated taxes that were way to confusing to handle myself. Beth was very very knowledgeable and quick to respond and saved me literally thousands of dollars! She was able to find all available deductions and knew soooo much about tax law and options.
