Where should I even begin? I was a bit wary of going to a totally random barbershop but I needed a haircut so I decided to take the leap of faith. As soon as I walked in I could feel the cozy vibe of the store and felt like I was at a friends house rather than a business establishment. Bridget offered me a coffee while I was waiting she's very friendly. Kyle is great. Gave me one of the best haircuts I've received and he's a chill guy. A lot of barbers will rush you out of the chair but not Kyle he's an absolute perfectionist which is great when it comes to barbers. Definitely coming back any time I need a haircut. While taking a stroll in Ferndale after having dinner with the family, our daughter was teasing her brother that he needed a line-up. Kyle happened to be standing outside the shop, heard us chatting and invited us into the shop for a quick line. My 12 year old son who's only sat in one barber chair was really geeked with his meticulous trim!!! Kyle was super focused and his shop offered a real cool, upscale, and cultured vibe. Based upon reviews, we were given the initial impression that The Hi Hat is a place to go for hats. I disagree. While we are looking for a fedora and they do have some, they only have about 12 -15 hats TOTAL. Some of the hats are the same, but stacked in more than one place. While I have no doubt the stylist might be wonderful and the folks inside were very friendly, it was a bit disappointing when it came to the hats. read more

Well... I no longer need someone to remove my hair for me (six years in the Navy gave me a more... permanent solution), and I fear I am less of a "fedora" than a "trucker hat" kind of guy. At this point in my review you may be wondering what exactly this fine establishment has done to warrant a pristine 5-smackers review from someone with nary hair nor hat. I'll allow that, because up until this point I have kept one vital fact shrouded in mystery: I have a glorious beard. So glorious, in fact, that I could not allow a blade to come in contact with it or I will lose all of my strength (or so I'm told). So here we are again; A seemingly purposeless review. Well, hold on to your proverbial hats, because I've got some more words for you. Two words: Beard oil. Face lube. Follicular lubrication. Call it what you will, but theirs is a delight. Much to my delight, manly aromas of sandalwood and men wafted up my nose all day long. If I closed my eyes and breathed deeply, it wasn't hard to imagine that I was mere centimeters away from Paul Bunyan on Christmas morning. After realizing that my eyes are still closed, if I dared to take another deep breath I might mistake the scent of this silky oil for the scent of a perfect man-child, one who could only reasonably be conceived by Jonathan Goldsmith and Isaiah Mustafa while sleeping next to each other under a blood moon on a safari in the heart of the Serengeti. My eyes are still closed, but all good things must come to an end - including this special moment. I slowly open my eyes, letting back in the chaos of a world gone mad. I can't express how much I love Bridget. Her shop is always warm and inviting with a very calm atmosphere. She has been cutting my hair for years now and every haircut feels like a personal experience. She wants to make the customer happy! My favorite thing is how comfortable she makes you feel. If I am not sure about the shape of my bangs I don't hesitate to express that and she doesn't hesitate to ask. She does not get offended and she also is fully aware that this is my hair and respects my vision. Her prices are also extremely affordable for the amount of time, effort, care and love she puts into a haircut/style. Bridget gave me the best haircut that I've gotten in probably 10 years. I've had a hard time finding a stylist I like and trust and I feel like I finally found someone great with her! She asked a lot of questions during the cut to make sure she knew exactly what I wanted, and that made all the difference. She's super easy to talk to and obviously cares about what she is doing. Interestingly, it was also one of the most inexpensive professional haircuts I've gotten in a long time. Can't beat supporting a local business with that offers great service at a fair price. Very low key comfortable atmosphere with her own record collection as the music. This salon is also great for anyone with allergies or sensitivity to chemicals. Bridget - Unfortunately you have your facts mixed up in your response to me. First of all, Kyle did not address me at all with any kind of apology for running over. That was my whole point. In addition, I don't think you know who is writing this review as at no time did I ever curse or scold Kyle. I simply walked out the door and said nothing since he said nothing to me. You may be referring to the other person who was with me at the time, but I guarantee you it was not me. So please, while I understand that he is an independent business - it is in your shop - I made the reservation thru your shop and that is what I know. How would I know that he is independent from looking at Yelp? This doesn't need to be a running dialogue but I'm not the one spreading falsehoods here. So I had to respond. I suggest that you make it clearer or don't advertise his service on your site. I'm sure you have a great business otherwise. Bridget is awesome. I've been trying quite a few stylists around Ferndale and I've finally found one that cuts my short hair the way I want. Bridget really listens and offers helpful suggestions. She takes her time and really communicates what she's going to do. I was very wary to try another barber after a bad experience at the (aptly named!!) Chop Shop in Berkely. After seeing the Hi Hat reviews I decided to give a barber another shot. So glad I did! Bridget's personality is very warm and genuine. The Hi Hat has a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere too! Go here, you won't regret it. I was lucky enough to book myself a Saturday morning appointment the Friday beforehand with Bridget. I arrived a few minutes early and roamed the shop a bit. I don't normally wear hats but after seeing these vintage gems I seriously considered it. They also have a collection of wooden watches reasonably priced, unique ties, and a ton of other neat trinkets. As soon as I sat in Bridget's chair I knew I was going to love it. I took a risk in not only going to a new place but also asking for a different haircut then my norm. Bridget was great though and knew just what to ask to figure out what look I was going for. At the end of the 30 minutes I had a great haircut - just what I wanted - and enjoyed every bit of the conversation. I can't recommend this place enough.
