The Hill Y in Westminster tries to offer too many activities in a small amount of space often sacrificing regular programming and affecting its members. I am tired of seeing text messages and emails saying, "we are sorry for the inconvenience" or "try this class instead". Unnecessary group exercise class cancellations truly affect my well-being. If the YMCA administrators and decision makers were truly sorry, they would make a change, prorate our memberships, or compensate members by lowering the price of monthly memberships. Instead, the prices increase each year. Here is an example of how the decision is made to cancel classes: Friday evening, 2/16/24, a decision was made to cancel FOUR group exercise classes because of predicted snow fall on Saturday morning. Here I sit on Saturday morning, 2/17/24, and the roads are clear. The Hill YMCA is opening at the regular time, but all the group exercise classes are cancelled this morning. When the Y center is open, group exercise classes should be offered as well.

Indoors is a weight room, cardio studio, yoga and group exercise areas along with steam room & dry sauna, a spin room plus meeting areas. There are locker rooms for changing complete with showers, restrooms, etc. Outside you have soccer fields plus athletic fields plus two swimming pools for seasonal recreation. The group fitness instructors are friendly, helpful & knowledgeable and there are many different classes to choose from. It's an older building, so it lacks some of the bells & whistles that more trendy gyms have, but delivers a lot of options for money well spent.

This pool has 4 lanes. When I came at about 1330, the pool was empty. WINNING!!! There was a woman in the locker room preparing to swim, so it was just the two of us. I didn't care for the fact that there's no entrance to the pool from the locker room, but the hallway from the locker room to the pool is kind of in the back. When I entered the Y the two women at the front desk were very helpful. I asked about the pool and what were the busiest times. I also asked the lifeguard this question and what I gather is that it varies depending on the day. There's plenty of cardio equipment and although it's not a huge club, it has everything I would need for my workout if I were to use the weights or treadmill. Also, it's very clean! I'll definitely give this Y a chance again and throw it into my rotation to get a feel for the best times to swim.

This Y has great workout equipments. Some of their machines are pretty modern. I was surprised by how clean and well maintained this Y was. Bikes were amazing. You can go on a nice virtual ride. The handles turn giving you a real feel of riding the bike. One of the best bikes I have seen in the gym. They lose a star for their outdated locker room. Small showers and the access to the sauna is pretty far outside the shower near the swimming pool. They don't provide towels. Luckily my husband had an extra towel in his gym bag.

I like that they have a ski erg machine that's comparable to that used at the event. My favorite Y is the Weinberg location, and that one is different. They also have a rope, which is useful for training the shoulders/arms. It's just in an awkward place. When the roped is pulled out to full lenght for use I felt like I was in the way. I tried two different angles and both were the same. Oh well. Sorry, not sorry. It's a big Y! They've got several sections of weights, machines, cycling rooms and the..... I guess I'll call it, Crossfit room (which is small and a bit awkward, but it works). They have weighted bags for the lunges up to 40lbs. They also have plenty of (matching) kettlebells. AND, they have weighted balls for the ball toss. The only thing missing is the sled. You can go to the Weinberg Y for that. I like this Y as well. There's plenty of room, which is good because it's much more crowded (even mid-day) than my other Y's. I was also glad to see the staff cleaning the weight rack. I mean, not just wiping it down. They removed the weights, wiped down the rack where the weights were sitting, and place the weights back. They were also removing the scuffs from the wall with the magic eraser. No wonder it looks so clean. And of course I can always count on the fireplace to chill at after my workout. Come check it out.

On a BCPS delayed start day, the facility did not clearly communicate any adjusted Stay and Play hours. The posted signage did not reflect the delayed schedule, and while staff observed me arriving with my child, this information was not proactively shared. I only learned of the adjusted hours after specifically asking. Clear and visible communication--especially on delayed start days--would help prevent confusion for families and improve the overall member experience. I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope it can be considered for future operations.

They have private showers rooms just in case you need your space like I do because usually I get ready for work at the gym. There is free coffee if you need a boost before working out. There are plenty of lockers available to secure your belongings. The equipment is well maintained and clean. I strongly recommend this gym if you're looking for one.
