The old building is beautiful from an architectural standpoint and it's used to store materials; the two buildings are connected by an underground tunnel. B&L donated a huge chunk of money for the new building (and got naming rights); that was certainly a much better financial time for Rochester's corporations....anyway, the B&L building is *beautiful*; very light and airy. Initially there was a small café in the B&L building, but it closed many years ago. After a few years elapsed, Simply Crepes (whose main location is in Pittsford Village's Schoen Place) opened at the library. It's in a lovely space, with a dining area overlooking the main lobby of the library. They have a very inventive and quite extensive choice of more than 30 types of crepes (breakfast, entrée & dessert crepes - including such unusual ones as buffalo chicken, Chinese chicken salad and chocolate peanut butter). They also have soups, salads, and a huge selection of specialty coffees & many other tempting-sounding beverages. I had lunch there with a friend on a weekday in late 10/05 and my vegetarian crepe was very tasty, but I felt it was pricey for what I got. The café quickly became popular with the downtown lunch crowd and it fills a big void. The B&L building also opened a beautiful reading garden - in 2004 - and it's a lovely oasis in the center of the city.

I love libraries but one beloved library from my childhood holds a special place in my heart. It's…read morethe Rundel building, which used to have a "Secret Room" hidden behind a door disguised as a bookcase. As a child, seeing this door open into a miniature world with dolls from around the world was almost magical. Today, the Secret Room is in the new library across the street while the Rundel building houses the areas for genealogy research and history. My recent visit to Rundel was to use their brand new, top-of-the-line microfilm readers. These wonderful machines don't just allow you to photocopy your research pages, they allow you to save your pages and email them to yourself or even save them on a thumbdrive. How efficient is that? There is a fair amount of security on this building and my Harvard library microfilm of a manuscript from the early 1900s caused a bit of a stir every time I entered and exited the front doors to feed the parking meter. While I'm certain that no one cared as much about this manuscript as I did, I wasn't going to chance leaving it unattended just in case I was hauled off to parking jail. Anyway, I was able to get some of my work finished in the quiet microfilm area on the second floor while keeping that parking meter fat and happy. As I sat at the machine, examining pages that were filled with the thoughts of a writer who lived long ago, I felt a strange twist of comfortable melancholy in this building. The magical Secret Room was gone but my warm childhood memory was revived, and as I read the words on the pages of this manuscript from long ago, I was touched by the thoughts of someone who did her best to not only make the world a better place, but tried to ensure that her thoughts were recorded in history. Her publisher made so many mistakes that she decided not to publish the book, and actually said so in the manuscript. Amazingly, here I was, sitting at a microfilm machine in Rochester, NY, reading the words she wrote a century ago, more than 2,800 miles away, and in another language. I am grateful to the Rundel library, not only for a warm childhood memory but especially for making that possible. Rock on, Rundel!

The home is a beautifully restored and dates to the early 19th century. The guest rooms (stayed in the Carson room) were wonderfully furnished and exceptionally comfortable. Our room's bathroom is one of the finest of any place I have ever stayed. They have anticipated every possible need, from q-tips and cotton balls in the bathroom to a stocked fridge with beer, soda and water. A remarkable room. The food both days we stayed was also terrific. Especially the Eggs Benedict (one of my favorites), which was as good as I have ever had. But what I think sets this place a part is the hospitality. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we felt as if we were valued friends that came for a visit. We were met on the porch when we arrived. Introduced to other guest who were in the library. And promptly offered a glass of wine. While enjoying two glasses of wine with our hosts, they made suggestions (great ones at that) for dinner that night and the next and then called and made the reservations for us. After dinner on the first night, we joined our hosts and other guests for drinks and champagne to toast the first anniversary of fellow guest (who stayed at the inn on their wedding night as well). The Inn keepers provided the champagne (and wine) and had cute anniversary glasses for the toast. We sat talking to the other guests and hosts as if we had been old friends, well into the night. The second night after returning from a birthday celebration dinner for my girlfriend, we were surprised with one of the best chocolate cakes I have had. We sang happy birthday and again enjoyed the wine and company of our hosts. The attention to detail and hospitality without being intrusive sets The Red Door Inn apart. Simply Amazing!

Kathryn is such a gracious host, making sure every detail is just right and offering advice of things to do and places to see. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. Breakfast was amazing and different each morning of our stay. In the evenings, we enjoyed her company as we wound down from our busy day. She is a big fan of The Voice and one evening we all got caught up on the current season! Canandaigua is a great location and has great options for dining in the area and Kathryn is very knowledgeable of the latest and greatest. We will definitely return next time we head back to the region.

Take the stairwell or elevator to the ground floor to enter the library. Once you're inside, you'll forget you're in a retail plaza. This was my first time here and I noticed large sections for children and teens, a quiet room, a nice selection of foreign films, a whole shelf of Hallmark movies, five big shelves of large print books for those of us with bad eyesight, and a lot of comfy places to sit. You can even check out a tote bag to bring your items home! If you walk by the library on the canal side, you can see in to the cozy reading area where the windows are lined with books. This is a welcoming and well stocked library that I will definitely return to.
