Um... this place is amazing…read more I had no idea this store even existed until I randomly decided to go in after browsing around at Eva B, which is pretty much right next door. Looking in from outside, you wouldn't gain much of a clue as to what this place is about since they aren't big on window display. Nope, aesthetics are not on the radar here. Once you go inside, though, you'll be blown away at: a) the actual size of this place and, b) the amount of STUFF. This is an industrial supply store, full of the most obscure tools, parts, etc and has everything -EVERYTHING- you could ever want before you knew you wanted it. I'm a DIY builder (artist) of mechanical, electronics, whatever and I seriously wish I'd found this place a lot sooner. Today I located an extremely hard to come by brass nut that I desperately needed to finish hooking up the latest appliance I'm working on. I had a hallelujah moment so hard, the guys working there thought I was a full-on lunatic. Everything is super cheap, super organized, and well-stocked. I'll be going here FIRST the next time I need parts. Also, all kinds of camping, fishing and other gear, too. Put it on your go-to list.

Friends told me the prices and stock were better here than at either of the neighbouring super chain stores (Depot, Tire) and that did seem to be the case. One time I was buying metal files and they opened a drawer with more files than I have ever seen in my life. 2: HARDWARE: in the basement they have one of the few remaining hardware counters in town, where you can walk up and ask for a dozen 4-40 stainless cap screws. They have good advice too. (Good prices but Harsupco is better in terms of variety and price.) 3: METALS: in the very back of the basement, they have aluminum, steel, brass and stainless metals in rods, angle, square bars that you can buy by the foot. Their price beats Home Depot by a long shot. They've got the usual things like paint and tape and power tools, but it's the three things above that make it very unique...

Things I fell in love with in here include the gorgeously painted sets of babushka dolls, the old timey lightbulbs that fit a regular lamp but have filament you can look at without burning your retinas, and this one industrial raw wood stool that I considered trying to waltz out with, despite its bulk, because I think it and I could dance together dreamily for a lifetime. The furniture is locally made and the friendly employee told me they are carrying more and more local design, but you can also find neat Japanese and French pieces and lots of ways to bun through your hard earned ducats.

Triple checked the date and time on my phone to make sure I wasn't imagining things. The selection is decent, although nothing that can't be found elsewhere, and frequently for less $$ online. Still, I'm fine paying extra and crossing town to shop a local small business vs the internet juggernaut that needn't even be named. Had a ten-dollar item in hand but had come to make specific purchases that would have amounted to hundreds. I've shopped there before, but I won't again, sadly.

I was staying a few yards away and I had to walk inside to check the place out...it's like walking back in time....back to the 1950s or so.... This old world gem of a hardware store!!! Inside I got to talk to Robert, the owner and he said they have pretty much everything you might need for the home...if not, they will get it for you. They are closed on Sundays, but usually open at 8:30am the rest of the week. Friendly and knowledgeable and very service oriented!!!

X-mas lights in June? Check. a set of allen keys for your bike? Check. A housewarming gift on the fly? Check. You can't actually browse or find anything yourself so you need to go to the counter and ask him and then he'll be like: "pas de problème" and he'll come back with your thing and then you'll be pleased that it'll be a heck of lot cheaper than what you'd pay at one of those large retail chains. So you win.

Although it has up-scaled a great deal, going from an average neighborhood hardware, to upscale specialty paint/hardware/housewares and gifts it still has the same neighborhood feel and even some of the same staff. Wilder, who works behind the paint counter in the basement, where most of the "serious" hardware is located, has been there ever since I can remember, and always provides one of the best customer service experiences available. He knows his stuff, and is always happy to help. Upstairs, where the gifts and housewares are found, is home to what I can only describe as *the* best selection of gifts for hard to shop for hipsters and grandparents ever... It has to be seen to be believed. If your looking for some unique gifts, specialty hardware, or are just tired of the so-so service at other big box hardwares, try Hogg out...

Anyway it seems Montreal doesn't have a lot of places that sells that but saw online that Hogg hardware does since it's part of the Home Hardware group. Went in, ordered it, got a call 2 days later to pick and it wasn't expensive at all. The guys are also really nice but while I was waiting around I saw a ton of cool stuff for the home including soy candles, funky door handles and coat hooks, and stuff you'll never see at Home Depot. I used to buy soy candles at Winners (since soy doesn't produce soot and burns cleanly), but increasingly they don't carry them anymore and instead have "hand-poured" candles ( what the hell is that supposed to mean if it doesn't change the fact that it produces soot?) but now at least I can get some here at a reasonable price. There's a reason why it's located in Westmount and also Nun's Island, it's definitely more bourgeoisie and less blue-collar.
