Former employee of The Home Depot for over 4 years. I would describe it as: amazing when its good, when its bad, look for a new job. This company allows employees to have money taken from their paychecks and endangers them to the point of almost death. TLDR - Management is too cowardly and will get someone injured or killed because they won't have an open conversation with troublesome employees, and theyd rather sweep everything under the rug and pretend nothing is happening and praying it wont. Management has ignored multiple emails, meetings they even agreed to. So they know money has been taken from employees, that our lives have been endangered. They DO NOT CARE. Management is either ALLOWED, or TOLD to lie, without consequence. Long version. Fat trimmed. When I got hired I was told within 2 years of being "okay" at my job, I should be expecting to be earning around 100k. This was a complete lie. The TRUTH.....is that ONE associate, ONE year earned that. This was told to myself and about a dozen others. When I alerted his boss of this discrepency, nothing happened. While I was in training in the field, the gentleman that trained me straight up tried to sell me meth on the clock but also partook himself. I alerted this to the boss that told me my pay expectation, nothing happened. When nothing happened I went to his boss, nothing happened. LUCKILY, for several years and MOST of my time here I had good bosses, so a few years went by. My managers started dropping because they were done dealing with the guy that did nothing, because all the work was shoved on them because the guy that promised people a crazy amount of pay and protected a meth user and dealer was and frankly still is, useless and more bad for this company than not. Now that all good managements gone(or inaccessable to me), lets get to the sad part that I HOPE.....someone big enough in the food chain will look into this, because a small pile of spoiled appled will ruin more if they are not trimmed. I got my SEVENTH boss early 2024. For perfect context, I had 2 broken feet(on top of a lot of general chronic pain), requested a lighter work load (was denied), requested to only have at MOST 8 hour shifts (3-4 days a week were over 9) I was covering a 150 MILE RADIUS, because we do not hire skilled, or reliable people when we are in a crunch, just someone with a pulse. I was written up once in my 4 years prior to this 7th boss due to a person in texas purposely putting gap in my schedule which was not discussed or agreed on as I was there to do as much as possible. (this was when texas had the nasty ice storm a few years bad, I was there for about a month helping) In less than a singular year I was written up 3, technically 4 times if you count my firing. Lets go over those. My first write up has no information or details due to my manager. So I will neither take that as is or defend myself. Two, due to my manager simply not having a conversation with not just A store associate,THE ONLY ONE, that has had guns pointed in my face. Because I called the associate out in the reschedule for that they need to pay more attention, go over with customers the correct information to avoid these issues. I was written up. Third. I had recently moved within 2 weeks. I was going to an area about 120 miles round trip away, thats well over an hours drive. A customer had unfortunately gotten called into work and my boss had texted me before I had even woken up which he knew. asking me if I was willing to push my workday back to accommodate the customer. This was originally posed as a QUESTION, or...an OPTION. I had called the customer and explained I had to be back in town before 5pm and I was unable to start my day roughly 6 hours later than normal. She understood this and rescheduled without issue. I had a 1 on 1 meeting with my boss that morning anyways. I was told that wasn't an option, even though it was worded as one. I was then written up, and what irks me the most is I told him, I had responsibilities I had to be in town for, because if I clock in at 8:30AM, My shift should be DONE bye 4:30, he apparently didn't know that, even though it was in a text message,crazy how managers get to lie to write you up. My fourth write up was because my boss is either a pathological liar, had a vendetta or there is just something wrong in his electric meatball. Someone was not doing thier job and I simply told him I was not going to do someone elses work when they can do it themselves, they are capable, and thats also POLICY AND PROTOCOL. It is crazy that this massive company protects meth dealers, management that gives you false information about your pay, lies to you (this guy still works here), pathological liars, management that doesn't do their job/lies to employees. Management(at least mine) was allowed to continuously lie or leave out VERY IMPORTANT details to negatively impact others and the management(bosses) above did not care when you told. read more

Please be careful using a Gift Card at this location. I used a Gift card at the Pro Desk to make a purchase. I had a sizeable balance left on my gift card after the purchase. I went back to use the Gift Card 2 wks later to make a purchase and my gift card was wiped clean. The balance on my gift card was taken and not sure how that could have happened. I just hope the customer service will issue a refund for the missing balance or issue me a store credit for the balanced that was scammed after they research what possibly happened. At this point, if you use a gift card please used the full amount and DO NOT LEAVE A BALANCE ON THE GIFT CARD. read more

Atrocious. Left hand doesn't know what right hand is doing vis a vis the local store vs. homedepot.com. Local store people want to help but can't due to the utterly byzantine, Kafkaesque "Let's keep you from reaching a real person at any cost" practices at homedepot.com. If and when you get a real person, there's more transferring, giving you an 800 # to call (where it's virtually impossible to reach a real person), losing your phone number, & more. All I did was try to order a washer on line. Website so buggy I had to go to local Home Depot store appliance department to order. Even there, it took more than a half hour to place the order. It was complicated by the fact that I'd signed up & been approved for a Home Depot credit card so I could get a nice discount on my order. That was a train wreck too with employee running into all kinds of phone & website snags with their credit card people who (of course) don't work for Home Depot but are some obscure bank/financial company HD has contracted with. MORE complexity. Then they tried to deliver the washer 3 days after I ordered. It was coming from Chicago, not the local store. I waited all day yesterday for promised delivery. Finally left the house at 4:45 pm to get errands done. They attempted & failed delivery at 6:05 p.m. So that night I spend 15 mins. on phone with Trevor at local store's service desk trying to make sure delivery people get the message that they must phone me to access my apartment building because doorbells don't work. So they try delivery again today. I'm home all day. I get an email early evening that they tried to deliver at 3:59 p.m. but I supposedly "wasn't home." I WAS HOME, and I DID NOT get a phone call from them at 3:59. I call local store back, seeking Trevor. "Trevor went home for the day." I ask for appliance department manager: "He went home for the day." I try to get woman at appliance desk to help me. "You'll have to call 800/466-3337 and speak with someone. I can't help with homedepot.com orders." I say I want to cancel my order. She says, "Unfortunately I can't help you with that because you ordered it online, not here. You'll have to call 800/466-3337." Call to the 800 number is yet another adventure in textbook example of Kafkaesque. (Google it.) You've been forewarned: DO NOT ORDER A MAJOR APPLIANCE FROM homedepot.com. Your chances are better for winning big in the lottery than getting an appliance delivered by homedepot.com. UPDATE, 12-1-20: The day after I submitted above review, I arrived home to find boxed washer sitting in hall outside my apartment door. This happened even though I called the night before to cancel the order, I was so fed up. Neighbor said, "I'd keep it if I were you." So I have. We made a quick stop at this Home Depot to pick up some 5-gallon heavy duty plastic buckets (only $2.97 each! Such a deal!) because you can never have too many 5-gallon buckets. Actually, one was for us and the other three were for a friend who is doing some urban farming and grows herbs and vegetables in the buckets. My wife went in on the mission to get the four buckets. Once inside she asked where she could find them and was politely given clear and easy to follow directions. She quickly located the buckets and picked what we needed and then headed for the check out registers, paid, and showed up at the exit. Since she texted me when she was almost ready, I was able to pull the car around to meet her at the exit and load the buckets. I ordered a pre hung door through Home Depot. Had it installed by a professional. After installation, I installed the door hardware. The latch from the knob would not go in to the hole to hold the door shut. I checked everything for level and square and it looks great. I called to inquire as to what I could do, was basically told that I could tear it out and return it for a 15% restocking fee. Otherwise I was out of luck. I get overwhelmed when I go into a place like this; partially because I'm trying to get a project done at home and my mind is focused there, and partially because there are so many things to discover here. Even if I know exactly what I'm looking for, I always seek out a knowledgeable staff member to assist. I do find that most of the staff are knowledgeable, but it is literally impossible to know everything about everything. Keeping your eye on what you came in for in the first place is critical, or you will likely end up spending a lot of extra time and possibly frustration here. read more

I absolutely respect Stores' rights to chose to enforce or not enforce health recommendations. (A different competitor brand store stops ya at the door to mandate masks before entrance!) 5/31/19 the level of incompetence by pretty much all employees at this Home Depot is truly shocking and unreal. Not only do they know very little about the products in the store, but they all seem really upset to be there. Update 10/15/17: Over the summer, my husband and I ordered doors for our home. When we got them installed, our contractor told us our custom closet door was not made correctly, this doesn't close well. We've contacted HP customer service multiple times and have walked in to talk to them. We've sent emails or pictures and measurements to show proof it's a manufacturing problem and not an installation problem. We have YET to hear from HP. It's already been 2 months since HP said they will fix our problem. I'm losing faith with the portage staff of Hp since our experience with the staff is getting worse every time we walk through their doors. Furthermore, we found out the lady we enjoyed working with to order our doors quit her job when we asked for her help. Of the three big corporate home improvement companies in the Kalamazoo area, I vote The Home Depot to be the best one to go for your home improvement needs. Even though I like Lowe's design styles better, HD overall has the best customer service. I've bought my carpet and carpet installation from HP. Both flooring associates and the carpet installers were friendly and professional. Be prepared and expect delays on getting carpet installed. We set a date back in June 2017 and had to reschedule the install twice, and finally got the carpet installed in August 2017. After the carpet installers left, I asked them to leave us the left over carpet. What I found was a large clear bag full of the new carpet with trash and dirt mixed inside. It was disappointing to see all the extra carpet gone to waste. Furthermore, when I was reassessing my furniture, I noticed the installers broke my desk, which cannot stand up on it's own because one of the legs was broken from the moving furniture. Also I've ordered custom made doors. Buyers beware on which associate you work with. Make sure you ask for an associate that KNOWS and understand doors. We first had an associate that knows how to order materials online but didn't have the expertise in doors. This resulted in us returning half of our doors back because they were built wrong. HD customer service was very helpful in fixing our issues. Additionally, I got help from the kitchen design people to help me order two cabinet doors. They were very helpful and even called me at home to confirm sizes and to order online so I didn't have to drive back to the store. I would recommend this place because of the overall quality of the customer service in multiple departments, especially if you are looking to ordering/updating/installing anything in your home. The installers could do a better job in being more careful with customer's property and discuss how to move things around so furniture doesn't get damaged. read more

The site no matter how many times even if the same day that I have visited wants to tell me that the item I sourced is available in a far, far away city. today it said It had three items in stock at the Portage store. Four associates couldn't tell me were the items were and treks from one end of the store to the other twice were unproductive. Finally a customer service person remembered some one coming it the day before and wanting to buy all of the particular item and similar items they had. Okay, fine, why in the fresh Hades couldn't somebody realise that the system needed updating. It used to be the app on my phone would tell me the location of the item but that doesn't work anymore either. They got 90% percent of my business when Menards abandoned Portage but I think I am done here. Suggesting that I just order for store pickup is not practicle if I want to inspect it to see if it is what will work for me and they really don't have it anyway. Oh and an associate told they didn't have another item that I eventually found on my own and then advised me that I could use a 20 amp rated outlet on a 15 amp circuit! WTH? read more

I've never enjoyed Home Depot. Their layout, inventory they carry, the employees seem crabby most of the time, who knows....maybe its just the color scheme but highly doubt it. Lowe's is a much better shopping experience in my eyes. This location is a little hidden by an Applebees, but set back in general, just look for the sign out front. I'd suggest asking an employee what you're looking for otherwise you may find yourself wandering aimlessly through this place. My new dishwasher was not installed as scheduled. Neither of the Home Depot delivery guys were wearing a mask. When I said they had to have masks on to be in my house one of them said that he had a runny nose (!) and that meant he couldn't breath through a mask, so he wasn't obligated to wear one. I immediately told them to leave, called his boss and reported him, and now have reported them to the county health department. read more

Worst Company! Bought 4 new appliances from them. Fridge doesn't seal shut and dishwasher completely broke. Store does nothing but direct you to the manufacturer. After Samsung came out to say yeah it's broke they can't bring a new one for 10 days. Store again won't do anything, won't even let you return to the store or they will charge a 15% restock fee, it's broke!! So have to wait 10 days for this to be picked up and 12 to 13 for money back. The people that work at this Home Depot go out of their way to be helpful. My husband and I always shop here for home improvement things. They also offer a discount for veterans and veteran parking. When we had problems with installing an appliance the manager went out of his way to help us. I would definitely recommend going to this store for all of your home improvement projects. read more

Very happy with the customer service here. We bought a mower and had some issues, but the Assistant manager Jordan, was able to rectify everything. The associate who came out to help us with the mower, I believe Mark?, was unbelievably professional and nice. They went the extra mile to help us and I really appreciate that. I originally picked up a 5000.00 carpet job from the Plainwell location and had come to the Portage location to review my purchase a few weeks before the install. After 45 minutes of no service, we were "helped" by a less than enthusiastic employee who did not want to pull up our account or even attempt to get any information to help us. I realize that all that. Would have needed to be done was call the other store and get a fax with our contract, but this lazy employee didn't even offer to do that! We ended up calling the other store, canceling the carpet and went to lowes. Don't go to this location expecting service, they will leave you wanting. read more

If you need cabinets, please DO NOT shop at Home Depot. First, the sales associate in the store acted like we were inconveniencing her by asking her to help us design our layout. Second, we are still waiting on our cabinets that are 3.5 weeks late. We were not notified that they were going to be late by anyone, and I have now had to call 4 times to try to get an estimate on when they will be in. The original sales associate who "helped" us was who I spoke with and she hung up on me in the middle of my sentence. When I called back, she said a manager would call me which I am still waiting on. We are now a month behind on our home project all thanks to Home Depot and their disorganization. read more

This Home Depot used to be my favorite hardware store. Now, not so much. I liked being able to look items up online and being able to check store availability. The website even shows the aisle and bin the item is located in, making it easy to find in the store. The last two times, however, I found the desired item online and verified its availability, only to get to the store and find out the item I wanted wasn't available. This is due to the fact that they assign the same "SKU" number to items regardless of the color or model number of the item, which makes my trip there a total waste of time. I also stopped using the in-store pick up option because I kept getting items that were returned by other customers (open box or broken). I think I'm going to try out the new Menard's on Gull Rd. read more

Rina in the Kitchen Cabinets was a pleasure to work with. She went above and beyond. She has excellent customer service skills and far above any other employee I have dealt with there. Ordered another set of cabinets and am on hold because he tells me they are really busy and understaffed. Not something a purchaser wants to hear just so you know. I ordered carpet thru home depot. Nice carpet, horrible customer service. I ordered and paid on 10/2/15 was told 7 day install, was scheduled for 10/13/15..not exactly 7 days...then On 10/4/15 I noticed on my e-receipt (I called my payment into the carpet dept at home depot) that I was charged for installation, but the promotion was free install. I called and Home depot refunded me all the install except $2. I realize its $2 but it was due me. The staff that processed my refund manually entered the amount why was I shorted, per the manager it was a coupon error???? So then the day comes for installation, We were told between 9-10, nope the installer shows up @ 1:15pm and then works for 2 hours and says that he doesnt have his carpet nailer??REALLY!! So I call and this time I am on my 2nd supervisor, whom they really cant and dont do anything, other than a lame apology. I was told the installer would be back at 8am the next morning. I was left with a living room in disarray and carpet blades left IN MY CARPET!! Next morning the installer isnt there @ 8am...I call home depot again, am now on my 3rd supervisor, which he agains does nothing. The installer finally shows up at 9:10pm.
