We stayed 2 nights in late June for a good friend's wedding. The rooms were magnificently kept and if you forgot any type of toiletry - the items were likely already in your room. Not only were toiletries available, but we also had discovered a small stash of mini water bottles, crackers, and snacks in one of the closets. Perfectly thought out preparation and presentation. Because of the old age of the house there is no AC, but rest assured every room comes equipped with a fan or two. Could not have asked for a more perfect weekend in Saranac Lake

Initially, we had a little trouble getting a hold of them to make the reservation, but once we had that taken care of it was pretty much everything we could ask for. We arrived later on in the evening the first night, so we couldn't actually see much around the B&B and went to dinner. We came back, opened a bottle of wine, sat on the back porch, and stared at what was probably the most stars either of us had ever seen. Then we went to bed. When we woke up, we were not expecting what we saw - shrouded in a morning mist (sounds cheesey - but this is the real deal), the back of the place overlooked the Moose River, a calm portion that almost made up a small lake. It was really amazing, and as it cleared up we were just thrilled to have chosen the place. Access to free canoes and kayaks - which we took full advantage of. The landscaping and area leading down to the river was very nice, a great place to relax after a day of being a tourist or after some light kayaking. The river was very nice, meandering with houses here and there along the shore, perfect for a lazy canoe or kayak trip. Also lots of turtles, water birds, etc., I'd imagine the fishing would be pretty good too. They also have a sweet, sort of vintage tandem bike - good times. We went to have breakfast - a really nice continental - and the owners were really lovely. Super friendly and helpful re: getting around and finding things to do, Stuart and Jimmy were really great. They weren't obtrusive, but made sure we were well taken care of. The room was very nice, everything was sort of an Asian/Northwoods/Antique-y mixture that wasn't too gaudy but you still knew you were in a B&B. If you're planning on hitting upstate New York and you want to stay some place affordable (it was $79/night for 3 nights during the week - you can stay at a crappy hotel for that much or more), this is not to be missed. Friendly, beautiful, and really close to perfect to be totally honest - we were fully satisfied and talk about going back whenever it comes up.

It seems the way this place is setup is there are only a handful of tables and each reservation is off-set by about 30 minutes. As other review state it is a husband (the chef) and wife (head waitress) duo who head this restaurant inn. I booked the reservation over a month in advance and I'm pretty sure it is necessary if you plan to go. The food- Fantastic and Different. Wild Boar Sausage - this was delicious, possibly the best sausage dish I ever had. This dish was literally bursting with flavor served with red wine sauce and mushrooms. Elk Loin - Delicious and before you ask, no it wasn't gamey! The service - Great personal service from the staff, however sometimes the head waitress let her opinions be known. She made it clear that she wasn't exactly happy with all the out of town business she was getting from their rave reviews. She also made odd comments on what she thought was proper male-female etiquette when the two of us were clearly joking about who was paying the bill. She also made a sarcastic comment saying she couldn't believe that we actually had manners enough for me to let my significant take the seat being held out for her, stating that most couples leave her speechless when the male takes the seat being held out. Located a few blocks from "downtown" and, therefore, in a bit of a quieter area, this B&B has a Adirondack-meets-Lake Placid Olympics-meets-comfy-retro feel to it. Rustic touches abound everywhere, the grounds, which abut the end of Lake Placid, have thoughtful and colorful plantings, hanging flower baskets, old milk cans, wooden skis, Radio Flyer Wagons, and bird houses. We took advantage of the 3 kayaks, and there is also a canoe. We lazed away afternoons on rocking Adirondack chairs, wooden chaises, and enjoyed our home-made meals (there is a refrigerator that guest can store food in, which is a really generous touch) under the twinkling, nighttime lights of the umbrella-d picnic table, The rooms are decorated with much attention to detail, the beds were super comfy, although the Lodge is on the main drag, even with the windows wide open we did not hear a sound from the McDonald's across the street, the sink mounted on an antique Singer Sewing Machine table is cool, the clawfoot mini-tubs are fun, although a little difficult to maneuver in and out from because the shower curtain is attached all the way around. A really good breakfast, prepared mostly by Moses/Red, co-owner with his wife, Nan, is served with panache (and a tableside visit and stand-up comedy from Red), vintage plates, and, wait for it...the New York Times! Both Red and Nan share their thoughts, hiking and swimming hole suggestions and local and national/political gossip. From the location, to the decor, to the hospitality, to the great sleep, the lakeside view and kayaks, the hiking, walking, drinking, eating, and blabbing that we did, we could not have asked for more.
