TLDR: the class was great but I've had some issues twice with admin items. The class itself was good! You definitely need to get used to exercising in the heat and be sure to bring water & a towel! I took fire glow which was 30mins intense, 30mins calm. Gillian was great, she walked around and helped us get into the right positions. I may try it again if it fits my schedule. The first time I went my card was charged twice. The woman at the front was a bit confused but wrote it down in the notes. I got an email that same night with a credit. When I went back to use my credit, class had started so I could not get in (completely understand this rule!) and the same woman said she's make a note & they would email me, but I haven't heard back. I just wish it were easier to cancel/reschedule a class between 1-4hours frame without getting a fee. read more

I have been enjoying this studio since I joined over a year ago. I took an intro class to support a co-worker and was addicted. They did a great job March through reopening with the HYB@home option which they stood up quickly. I tried this place out for the first time last week on Tuesday. I had purchased a Groupon for 2 classes and finally had to courage to try it out. I have to admit that going through the class was pretty challenging, but it was SO worth it for the energy and cleanse I had for the next day. I took the 6pm - Yugala Yoga class with Michele and it was both rejuvenating and refreshing. I took her class again the following week because I definitely felt like she made me push and challenge my body capability. I def forgot the balance I had from my previous dancing years and worked through my feet when it involved specific balance moves. Please be sure to bring a towel for wiping your sweat, and possibly a larger for your yoga mat to prevent you from slipping. You WILL need water to stay hydrated - so be sure to bring enough to sip on during the class and to gulp down right after. You WILL be thirsty for the rest of the day and possibly the next. I tend to always hit my 20 cups of water goal the next day after this class, haha. After the two classes, I feel like I want to challenge myself, but not too excessive (yet). With summer around the corner, I didn't want to try sign up for the 3 month classes, but I do pan on signing up for their spark deal (where you can go as many times as you want in one month). I'm also trying out the Whole30 and experimenting the available classes as a current substitution for a majority of my cardio classes. I do plan on signing up right after the monument 10k or the following week. i look forward to sweating out my stress and anger from work - haha. P.S. - Marge is the studio manager and one of the instructors there. I heard that she's pretty hard and a kick-ass instructor. She's super sweet and willing to help you with any questions or concerns that you may have about the place or their rates. Def awesome staff and instructors. Attending a virtual yoga session was just what I needed! I don't feel comfortable going into the studio at the moment so the online offering was perfect for me. The instructor, Tyler, was great! She took her time to where a novice yogi like I could get into the correct positions and feel the stretch working through my body. I absolutely love HYB! It took me a while to find a studio I love after moving to Richmond but I love this place! Alli's power 2 class is probably my favorite class ever and I have been doing yoga for years. The studio is a super fun environment with awesome instructors! The Hot Yoga Barre deserves nothing less than 5 stars. The studio is clean, the staff is amazing, and the heat is perfect. I was so happy to have them participate in Yelp's Fit Club, a series of fitness events for Yelpers, this past March. Angie (the owner) was kind enough to let me come in before the Yelp class to check it out for myself. That's when I got hooked! I left the class refreshed, relaxed, and ready to take on the world. I had never had that feeling before after a workout. It was close to what many people call a "runner's high" except it was a yoga high. I give The Hot Yoga Barre all the credit in making me a believer in yoga. The Yelp's Fit Club class came and went and it was equally as awesome as the previous class. Both of which were with the absolutely lovely Marge. I loved it so much that I ended up purchasing the unlimited month of classes. I have been going 3-4 times a week since purchasing and I can see results in just a month. I didn't really change up my eating that much, but I can only imagine how much more intense my results would be if I had. I always tried to go to Marge's classes if I could make it, just because I love her teaching style so much. I also went to Bethany's Barre and Burn classes on some mornings and she was awesome as well! Ok, let's address the elephant in the room: The heat! If you're worried about it like I was in the beginning, stop that right now. Their heating system only heats the objects in the room, not the air. This, my friends, is brilliant. It's never sticky, funky, or thick air. It's just dry heat and it's amazing. Something that we Virginians ain't used to. You won't pass out. Just make sure that you're hydrated and consuming enough calories for your body. Pay attention to their studio policies, because they are serious about them and that's one of the main things that I LOVE. You don't have people walking in late disrupting the vibes because they lock the door when class starts. You must sign in when you get there and you're also responsible for bringing your own mat (yay for not reusing someone else's sweaty mat!). If you forget your mat, you can buy a cheap one for around $10 and they also have lululemon mats for much, more. Whatever suits you! You can also buy towels, water, and HYB gear. After class, you can take a nice, hot shower and head out for the rest of your day. As you can probably tell, I can't recommend Hot Yoga Barre enough. I'm sad that my unlimited month is about to run out, but this won't be the last that they see of me! read more

This studio is perfect for getting acquainted with hot yoga or barre style classes. I like the heat and sweating so all that did was attract me! But for those concerned with the heat, they've got some fancy technology going on. The heaters heat objects, not the room in its entirety. So the more you move, the more you sweat. Also, the floor is great. I can't remember what material it is made up of, but it is easy to clean, unlike carpet, and isn't as firm as a wood floor. I recommend signing up for the unlimited month and making an effort to try as many different classes as possible. I enjoyed them all. In terms of the benefits, I felt better internally. Externally, my pores opened up and cleared up. This is a hands on studio, as they will remind you often. I didn't mind that because I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong and the instructor to correct my form. However, if that's not your cup of tea, just let them know. In terms of storage, HYB has plenty of cubbies for you to store your gear and benches all throughout the studio to change shoes. They also do have showers with towels. The studio does get crowded during peak hours, such as in the evenings, so take into account time to shower. I had a very pleasant time getting hooked onto Hot Yoga at this studio and am sad that I am no longer able to make it. Every instructor I interacted with was genuinely nice. I think once you check out HYB you will agree that the decor, cleanliness, and staff make this studio worth every penny. read more

What an exciting experience! This was my first time doing HOT yoga. I have always heard it's amazing for the body and that I should definitely try it. I am so glad I did! The studio has a system set up where the items in the room (walls, floors, mats) are heated and not the air. This makes for a much more enjoyable experience. It is recommended to bring your own mat and towel, but they do provide back ups at an affordable price. The instructors, Laura and Marissa are just excellent. They have a very welcoming vibe and take time to go around to each person and helped to support us into the correct position. I appreciated how they made sure to note before hand that, if welcomed, they are hands on, but have no problem avoiding those who wish to be left alone. I could go on and on about how much I enjoyed the class, but this is definitely something that must be enjoyed first hand and The Hot Yoga Barre is a great place to get started. Main issue I had was how poorly trained staff were to inform you of their cancellation policy. I tried calling their phone number a few times but no one answered, then decided to ask in person during a weekend and the girl in the front told me to "come back during class hours because they were doing training and nobody could help me". Mind you, I work full time so I couldn't come back until a few weeks later, just to be told that I needed to send an email in writing to let them know that I wanted to cancel. This, of course, could have perfectly been told to me the first time I visited instead of instructing me to 'come back during class hours'. The amount of time I wasted just trying to cancel my membership was ridiculous. Their cancellation policy says that you must cancel at least 30 days before the next billing period, otherwise they still charge your card. Well, I COULD HAVE done that, if I hadn't wasted so much time trying to figure out HOW TO DO IT. I emailed them explaining that I needed to cancel because I was moving out of the country in July 2019 - meaning I WAS NOT able to go to class anymore. Not only did they decide to still charge me for a month I was definitely unable to attend, but Tyler's response to my complaint was to merely COPY and PASTE their policy via email. That was the great customer service response on their end. You'd think that they'd be flexible given the circumstances, but nope. I guess they are just like any other money-grabbing gym or studio, such a shame given the quality of the classes. The Hot Yoga Barre is, quite frankly, the best hot yoga studio in Richmond! The staff is so friendly, the teachers are inspirational, the retail selection is top-notch, and the studio is so clean! The classes are tough, but they are beginner friendly and the instructors are not intimidating. I've taken classes where I just lay on my mat because that's all I'm able to do that day, and the instructors not only let me do that but they often come and "assist" my "pose" but gently pushing my shoulders into the floor. It's so soothing and helps me feel like I'm not being "lame" by just laying there. If you come to the studio as a first-timer, make sure to arrive 15-30 minutes early so they can give you a tour and tell them their policies. The Spark deal is really a steal. read more

I'm advanced practitioner of yoga and i absolutely hated the class. I signed up for and expected an advanced power yoga flow. What i got instead was an aerobics class. The club style music was annoying loud and the teacher was screaming over it to a 1-2-3-4 type of count. I cannot stand classes that claim to be yoga and have that kind of vibe. I was definitely excited to attend my first Hot Yoga Class yesterday at 8am ( 10/16/2016) . I really didn't know what to expect so I entered the class with an open mind. The instructor was pretty cool. She talked throughout the class, played a good music selection and corrected my friend and i if we were doing something wrong. I would have liked for her to stay back to educate us some about Hot Yoga and obtain feedback from us. The website leaves out that you need to bring your own yoga mat and towel. However Ms. Angie, the owner, made the environment for me uncomfortable. She kept a close eye on me when I first walked in and didn't greet me, but greeted the guest that were before and after. I love HYB! I go to Willow Lawn regularly but have also been to Midlo several times and both gyms are equally clean and inviting. I go 3-4x a week, which makes each class around $9 which is ridiculously inexpensive. The price ($139/month unlimited) is so worth it. All the teachers are great, but I recommend going to a variety of classes with a variety of teachers to find out who/what you like best. You may take the exact same class with a different teacher and have a totally different experience; different teaching styles work for each person. (If I could change something, it would be a bigger variety in the Thursday/Friday 4:30pm class at Willow Lawn -- 4:30pm is my only promised workout time and those two classes are identical; just wishful thinking!) They do charge a cancellation fee within four hours of class but ALL boutique gyms charge this, even for members, because they can't allow you to waste a spot that could've been used for someone else. They are very helpful if you have an emergency (usually child related, in my case), you just have to contact them. The only real concern I have is the annoying online system. Once you get signed up and logged in, you're good to go, but creating an account and signing up for your first free class is a total pain. I've referred two people lately and it's been a huge hassle to bring them to class. I know this is an outside system they use but I'd definitely recommend fixing this glitch. read more

This studio sets the bar by which I judge other studios. The practice room is large and full of natural light. I really like the infrared heat used by HYB. The studio is always clean and the staff are both friendly and knowledgeable. Although I don't make it to HYB often, I always feel welcome there. After coming to the Hot Yoga Barre for over a year now, I can say that it is one of my favorite boutique fitness studios in Richmond, Va. The studio is absolutely beautiful and consistently clean. Plus, the staff is always so warm & friendly. The teachers never fail to give me a kick-butt workout every time in the infrared heat (which I absolutely love). It's nice to have variety when you pay for a membership, somewhere. That's why HYB is perfect. They offer numerous yoga classes, barre, and HIIT. You get a lot of bang for your buck. There are so many things wrong with this studio. They are much more expensive than they should be first of all. I tried a free class when they first opened and that prevented me from purchasing an intro pass?!? Compare prices to other hot studios in town like Hot House before buying this one. There pricing is especially terrible when you factor in that you're charged $15 for cancelling within 4 hours even if you have an unlimited pass... They do not offer face towels or cool lavender towels. The yoga classes offer very little variation and are on hard wood which gets much more slippery than a normal hot yoga padded floor. The main yoga room is very dark and the yoga is done facing a black wall which makes balancing very challenging. They also play super upbeat loud music during class. To top it off most of the teachers are unwelcoming and it's not the warm, welcoming yoga environment that you look for in such an expensive studio. Don't buy a pass here if you're looking for a mindful experience. read more

I absolutely love the HYB. I'm pretty sure I die in every class but I feel like a better, stronger person when I leave. Classes here have improved my mood, physique, and eased my back problem (scoliosis). I want to say my skin is better too but that's hard to truly attribute. People in the class are really nice, so it's a good community as well. It's also the little details here that I love - if you're pretty late, management will take your stuff and set it up as a mediator to avoid the awkwardness of asking people to move or make space. During yoga, sometimes the teachers realign your body or guide to deepen the poses. CLASSES yoga - intro (beginners), yugala (intro/intermediate), hot power (inter/adv), hot power II (adv) barre - ballet-based exercises that don't look like much but burn like hell burn - 45sec cardio exercises + 20sec cooldown. prepare to die in this class. I can usually do two classes in a row but a burn class before wipes me out and I get a little sloppy if I try yoga afterwards. Teacher trainings and workshops - one starting in Fall. I would probably get certified here if I was still in the area. THE HEAT I believe it's around 95-100 degrees in the room during the classes. Hot yoga isn't for everyone, so I'd suggest trying with Spark membership first. Do not eat 2 hours before a class just in case, and stay hydrated - drink water nonstop if you are a regular. I think there are some benefits to practicing in hot yoga, but it's kinda like the benefits of drinking green tea - hard to quantify with substantiated research and subtle effects vary with each person. INSTRUCTORS I had gone before HYB doubled the number of teachers, but I can tell you every teacher here is not your average 200-hour basic betty. They're all human pretzels, lean mean strength machines, or more likely both with a touch of spirituality and lots of personality. AMENITIES - I believe 2 showers and 2 bathrooms with a double sink (always super clean omg YAS). If you shower, plan on getting in/out within 15min or not at all if end of day class. - plenty cubbies to store stuff - Small shop at front consisting of towels, mats, shirts, S'well bottles, and leggings (Onzie/teeki). RATES - unlimited: $125/mon with min. 3 month commitment, or $160 no contract - intro special: $60 for unlimited month - various specials for out of town, student, lunch classes, drop-ins, etc. check the website. POLICIES - if you have to cancel a class, do it at least 4 hours in advance to avoid being charged $15. you usually don't have to sign up for yoga, but barre/burn fill up fairly quick - if you're late, management will give away spots to those waitlisted 5min before class begins - THEY WILL SHUT THE DOOR before class begins. Get here early though try not to race - I've noticed a lot of police cars waiting on the streets around Willow Lawn. TIPS & TRICKS - S'well bottles or similarly vacuum sealed water bottles filled with ice will keep the temperature of your water refreshingly cool. I've walked in with 32 oz plastic bottles filled completely with ice and walked out with lukewarm water an hour later so take the plunge and get the S'wells. - really need to bring a hand towel, a yoga towel, and your own mat. If you get a towel, the ~$20 ones on Amazon will do the trick, though if you practice a lot (like every day) I've noticed chafing on my arms due to moisture and poses such as dolphin. Now I use the $20 ones for barre/burn and the expensive yogitoes towel for yoga as it grips better. - if you stay near the doors, you get cut a little slack due to people walking in/out or teachers opening the doors if it gets too hot.... I'm just saying ;) - parking: usually can find the last spot or so if you arrive 15-20min early, but if not you'll have to park 10 ft away on the other side (gasp!!). read more

I recently came to my first class at this studio. Overall the studio environment, intensity of the class itself, and instructor was great. However, it was only after the class was finished that I noticed some poor customer service from one of the supervising coaches. After the long work out, it was clear that I needed a fresh towel to wipe down my workout mat. I noticed a fresh batch of towels, but was refused by one of the coaches (Dudley) who requested I implement other people's USED (very sweaty) towels for wiping down the workout mats. She might've been following protocol, but is this what is typically done after classes at this studio? I was thrown aback by this and the overall lack of awareness of how poorly hygienic this practice is. It really put me off and left a very bad taste. read more

Five stars for instructors and variety of classes and availability. Three stars for management and professionalism. First, about the instructors. Class at the HYB is the best part of my day. After seven months of daily barre (and sometimes BURN or yoga) classes, I cannot imagine life without HYB. The instructors are fabulous. My favorite part? The community of HYB regulars! That said, there have been some issues with scheduling. I am a full-time Ph.D. student and work for a local university. As such, I am required to be available at a moment's notice. The four-hour+ cancellation window can be very tricky, but I have worked my butt off trying to abide by the rules. I have followed advice by waiting to book my classes until the day of, but for a number of sessions it's impossible to get in without booking days in advance. Even when I go out of my way to make amends in the rare instance that a last-minute emergency arises, as I did this evening, I receive attitude and a severe lack of empathy. It seems that my emergencies are not judged as such. It hurts my pride to say this, but a $15 penalty is a dent in my budget. Even worse, I'm admittedly nervous that this updated review will impact my membership rate. That's not the kind of response a business should cultivate, however indirect it may be, particularly from their regular clients. The nature of my personal emergency is not the staff's to judge. An emergency is an EMERGENCY. Period. The. End. That said, I'm thrilled with the results of barre--I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the instructors are! Barre has elongated my muscles and has greatly improved my posture and overall strength. For the first time in my life, I'm waking up early to hit the barre! The staff keep the studio impeccably clean and even Swiffer the floors between classes. Water and S'Well bottles are available for purchase. So are Yogitoes (an absolute MUST!) Memberships are reasonably priced (though rates are increasing on September 15). Students receive discounts! Take note: HYB is FIRM on their late cancellation and no-show policy. Also, the studio closes 15 minutes after most classes, making it a bit tricky to wipe up your equipment, towel off, shower, de-humidify, and dress in the allotted timeframe. The extended 30-hour window doesn't apply to 9:30 a.m. classes, as they're not considered "early morning." I prefer to shower at home (even though I end up soaking my car seat and getting borderline backne [sorry for TMI]) to avoid the hassle of rushing around with post-workout spaghetti-like muscles. read more

I love this studio! I've tried several other yoga studios and Richmond, but I've stuck with this one for the last six months. Being able to take barre as well as a couple different yoga classes makes it such a great value! All the instructors are wonderful and have a slightly different spin on their class. Their power yoga is the most challenging yoga class I've ever taken and the barre classes have tightened up my legs and arms. I can't say enough good things about this place! There's a wonderful happy, laid back vibe, and lots of different classes to pick from with a schedule that works great for someone with a busy schedule. read more

This place kicks my butt! I love the classes, Marge is an amazing teacher. They have showers, which is great. The room is heated to a comfortable temperature. The classes follow the same general structure but they encourage you to make it your own and go deeper into more advanced postures. I have been doing hot yoga for six years, this is harder than Bikram but more fun. It is like Ashtanga, Bikram, and vinyasa mixed. Also, the teachers adjust you, which is missing from many local studios. Try one class. read more
