I never used to lift weights, in part because I worried I might hurt myself with poor form. Travis is one of the best coaches I've met, in any context. He's patient, precise, and supportive. Lindsay brings a level of humor and fun to workouts that doesn't take away from safety and motivation. If you want a place that really focuses on using good form, on keeping your body safe while getting and staying fit, this is it. Another reason I've stayed for four years and plan on working out here forever is the community. It's nice to greet and be greeted by workout buddies of all ages. I'm in my 50s. Just this morning I touched base with a guy in his twenties who usually takes the same class as me. He said to me, "hey, I noticed you've been looking stronger lately...thought I should share that with you." This from-the-heart comment really pumped me up, especially since I'm still in recovery from a minor surgery. And it echoed the motivating phrase painted in huge letters on the wall: Stronger Than Yesterday. Who is the ideal person for this gym? Anyone. Really. There are professional athletes who workout here, and there are retired folks. Nurses, project managers, desk jockeys. There's a middle aged couple whose four kids sometimes join the workouts. When my kids are old enough, I know they'll be welcomed here. There are 20-somethings and 40-somethings and 60-somethings. Some couples workout together, some go solo. Mon, Wed, and Fri when my alarm goes off at 6:20 I just want to go back to sleep. But then I say to myself, "you're always glad you went." So I go, and I AM always glad. And during the workout, most days at least, I do feel stronger than yesterday.

Thereafter, she video joined me in my apartment in the Bay Area for 1:1 training. She was great at adapting to not only my current state of fitness but also in the equipment I did/didn't have on hand and my space. I also suffered an injury at a certain point during our training, and she was so great in finding ways I could still push myself while giving body parts time to heal. While I don't have specific recommendations for how to alleviate this situation in all cities, I can certainly provide some assistance when it comes to Bend, Oregon. The Athletic Club of Bend offers numerous opportunities for you to get that workout in when you're in town for a visit. Their amenities include 7 indoor tennis courts, an indoor running track, indoor and outdoor pools, a large spa, cardio equipment, weight room, a full basketball court, and 4 racquetball/squash courts. While those amenities don't necessarily make this place unique, there are two characteristics that do set this place apart. First, they openly accept visitors to the club. Many clubs are very closed minded about this, but not so here. Sure, you'll have to pay a guest fee, but it was very reasonable. Second, I found the members here to be genuinely welcoming. I chose to utilize the club for some tennis and I felt immediately accepted by a group of members who have a standing weekly match. After just 2 hours together I felt like a part of the group and left with names and phone numbers for the next time that I visit Bend. Sure, you can come up with an excuse to not workout while in Bend, but that excuse can't be that there's no facilities that you have access to or there are no friendly people here to connect with. For the past 3 weeks I've taken Mary Ellen's somatic movement workshop, and it's been wonderful. A different and interesting way to look at movement. Surprisingly after doing gently movements on the mat, I walk away feeling more in my body and less stiff. I highly recommend!
