An absolute stunning view, great beer selection and customer service. The only reason I am grading 4 out of 5 is because the prices are very high, the flounder was very overcooked and the fried fish very greasy. Neither than less I would go back in a heart beat as everything else was phenomenal!

(Note: this review is for the restaurant) Like many in smaller Alaska towns, the labor shortage is hitting this business in Whittier hard. There was one server working, she looked overwhelmed, and it may as well have been her first day. But she was trying her best. She just needed better training. The sign out front says "Whittier Brewing". As far as I know there's not a brewery in Whittier. There were no "Whittier Brewing" beers on tap either. I can't find any mention of this on their official website either. Googling "Whittier Brewing" only seems to get me a brewery in California. Seems deceptive? The food is good for what it is: fried fish, fried shrimp, burgers. The views are incredible! However, they are obstructed every few minutes by tourists doing selfies.

Excellent, excellent cocktails. Excellent food, highly recommend this place for some really, really food and drinks.

Stopped in even though Yelp didn't have this come up when searching for restaurants in Whittier. The Inn itself is charming inside. The food service was okay, not as prompt as you'd hope for an expensive lunch. We had the spinach salmon dip appetizer. Small amount of small bits of salmon in a fairly small container of dip, especially for the amount of chips accompanying said dip. I ordered the halibut fish and chips which I believe was $30 for the plate with 3 pieces. It was decent tasting. The breading on the fish needed some seasoning. Fish was good quality. Fries were very bland.

Shrimp pasta. Very good. Don't know if the shrimp is fresh for sure, but tasted fresh and good.

I wish there is a four point five option. Hotel: Five stars. Smooth quick check-in. The room and amenities are dated but everything is clean including the windowsill which I didn't expect for an inn in a remote town. Staff are friendly. Restaurant: Five star services, five star views, four stars for the food. We had dinners here two nights, partially due to the lack of options during the semi-pre-tourist season, and partially cuz we really liked our food the first night. The first night the place was packed and second night was empty. But we were greeted and seated very promptly both nights. And regular check-in and refills of water (no "I am too busy to fill your water" or "I am too chilled to fill water" kinda bs). Of course the food came out much slower in the first night. If the owner see this, you should be very proud of your staff Michael and Julie (or Julia?). We had seafood pasta and shrimp pasta the first night. The fish was a bit dry but shrimps were great. And pasta were well cooked with fresh vegs. With the second night's experience, I won't order the shrimp and fries again as they are too greasy and salty for me (much better in the shrimp pasta version), but will gladly have the cheese burger or chowder any time. And of course the view is great any day.

A dated looking place but has an awesome view and the staff is so friendly. Pretty much the only option to get food at a certain time. No AC .

Over the years, there have been changes, but the dining room for the most part remains the same. Big light and airy space, with massive picture windows looking out over Summit Lake, and it's a beautiful view. There's a cosy seating area right at the entrance with comfy couches to relax on. If you can get a window seat, it's well worth it. Swallows swerve by the window with mere inches to spare, catching insects on the wing, it's quite a sight while you wait for your food. It has a rustic, log cabin Alaskan feel, but the napkins are fabric, the glassware is nice, and servers are in uniform. The menu is hard backed so it feels sophisticated. I ordered coconut shrimp from the appetizers menu, which came with some kind of special dipping sauce, and I got some French fries on the side. Husband ordered the Garbage Grinder burger and a salad. The shrimp were ok, nothing special, the dipping sauce was based on orange marmalade - I didn't enjoy that at all. The fries were ok. His Garbage Grinder burger was insurmountable in the state it is presented, there is no way a normal person can fit that in their mouth. It must be 6/7 inches high. He had to remove some items to make it thin enough to get it in. Whilst I was eating, a couple were seated on the table behind us. I didn't think my chair was sticking out that far, but this woman, when being seated, kept whacking her chair into mine, forcing me to push my chair in really tightly, which I thought it was rude and inconsiderate, as a normal person would say "excuse me, could you pull your hair in a little" but she just kept battering my chair with hers until I moved. We were obviously in very close proximity, and I heard them say they were tourists, from out of state and had just got married, and would they comp the meal? This was prior to even ordering, and not because anything was wrong with the meal, just merely because they had a strong sense of rude entitlement. You got married, why are you entitled to a free dinner? It was irritating. But obviously not the fault of Summit Lake Lodge. Anyway the server promised to ask her manager. (Who refused to comp the meal, but did offer a discount) Anyway, it's a beautiful place, in a beautiful location, you're paying for an experience, not just the food - which is slightly above average. The service is impeccable, the views are stunning, and an influencer's dream. The menu used to have a lot more items on it, simpler things - I had my first ever Reuben here years ago and it was amazing, but you can't get it anymore. It seems to change annually. Anyway, it's definitely worth stopping in.

I must give credit to this Brown Bear Saloon and Hotel. Although I was just here for one evening to…read morerest my head before officially driving famed Seward Highway...it really was the ideal place to stay. Brown Bear Saloon and Hotel is a rustic and cozy wooden lodge situated right off Seward Highway. It specifically sits 25 miles south of downtown Anchorage and 100 miles north of the town of Seward. In fact, the address for Brown Bear states that it's situated in the town of Indian, Alaska. I've never heard of Indian, AK...but basically if you need a place to stay in and around Seward Highway, this Brown Bear Lodge is accommodative. What was even more terrific about staying here was that the location felt far away from the hustle and bustle of Anchorage. The hotel views look out upon the scenic Turnagain Arm waters with the snow-capped Kenai mountains standing tall in the distance. Even though Brown Bear is located right off a very busy section of Seward Highway, I genuinely felt like I was staying in the heart of nature. And btw...when I did visit and spend the night here, unfortunately there was a lot of construction going on beside the highway. So here it is, Brown Bear Saloon and Lodge...a prime spot for those getting ready to start and or continue their Seward Highway journeys. Well, one thing...when I woke up in the morning, I actually had to backtrack a little up north on Seward Highway for about 15 miles. Yeah so, I take that back, the lodge isn't really the start of Seward Highway. But I traveled back north for 15 miles to the Potter Marsh Boardwalk where I explored for a little before returning back on Seward Highway for the 115-mile trek south. Basically...this Brown Bear Lodge and Saloon was much better than grabbing some random hotel in downtown Anchorage. It had personality and charm. What was surprisingly amazing about my stay was the price! Throughout my 3-week voyage around Alaska, Brown Bear had the cheapest rate by far! It was $67 (with taxes and fees included) for a room I had on the 2nd floor just above the restaurant. I mean, $67...can it get any cheaper for a place to stay right along iconic Seward Highway at the start of summer travel season? Lol, I don't think so. Although my room would be standard for most tourists...for me it really stood out with a lot of great amenities. It had a walk-in glass door shower (not just a tub with a curtain), very comfortable towels to dry off afterwards. And here me...I don't think I'd ever recall thinking about towels making a difference during my stay, but they really were fluffy and comfortable. Lol, maybe they were brand new? The room also had a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee pot, good sink area and a giant mirror with good lighting. Btw...I checked-in, inside the restaurant. Then I was given a key and shown the stairway to the 2nd floor. Too bad I had already eaten in Anchorage prior to arriving here because the restaurant looked very interesting...like a casual blue-collar spot to grab a good old-fashioned burger and fries...or simply just your typical all-American type of fair. Point is...the restaurant appeared accommodating for those spending the night as you can just have a hearty meal and then return to your room. Some extras about the restaurant...it resembled a bar/pub with a colorfully fun atmosphere. They had high top tables and chairs...a huge selections of beers on-tap. I believe I saw a billiards table to play and plenty of televisions to watch sports. I'd recommend eating here if you didn't catch a bite back in Anchorage. Overall, I'm happy I discovered Brown Bear Saloon and Hotel. I found it on Priceline. I couldn't have asked for a better one-night stay after all the traveling I had done prior to arriving here. This place is definitely emblematic of your off the beaten path motel/lodge sitting right in the cross section for traveling to all parts of southern Alaska.
